Pakistan captain Babar Azam and five other players including Mohammad Amir, Imad Wasim, Haris Rauf, Shadab Khan, and Azam Khan have decided to spend their holidays in London before returning to Pakistan after their disastrous T20 World Cup campaign. The six players will not land in Pakistan with the rest of the squad on Tuesday. The above-mentioned players plan to spend time with friends and family in London. Some are also thinking about playing in local leagues in the United Kingdom, according to a report in The Express Tribune.

Meanwhile, head coach Gary Kirsten and assistant coach Azhar Mahmood will head to their respective homes. With no immediate engagements on the horizon, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has permitted the coaching staff to return to their countries, the report added.

Pakistan had a terrible outing in Group A of the ongoing T20 World Cup which ended with a narrow three-wicket win against Ireland on Sunday in their last fixture.

They suffered defeats against co-hosts USA, and arch-rivals India before defeating Canada by seven wickets.

With four points in as many games, Pakistan finished third in their group and missed the Super Eight berth with India and USA sealing their spots after the top two finish.

Pakistan team will now take on Bangladesh in the two-match home Test series in August, followed by England’s tour of Pakistan in October.

Former champions Pakistan restored a semblance of pride with a toiling three-wicket win over Ireland in their inconsequential final game of the T20 World Cup on Sunday. The 2009 champions, who were eliminated following their loss to India and the USA in the earlier group matches, restricted Ireland to 106 for 9 after opting to bowl with Shaheen Shah Afridi (3/22) leading the show. Despite chasing a not-so-daunting target, Pakistan’s fragile batting was once again exposed as they slumped to 62 for six in 11 overs, raising the vision of another collapse. But skipper Babar Azam (32 not out) and Abbas Afridi (17) shared a 33-run stand to take them home at 111 for 7 in 18.5 overs.

Shaheen Afridi hit the winning runs with two mighty sixes in his 5-ball 13 not out.

Pacers Barry McCarthy (3/15), Curtis Campher (2/24) and Mark Adair (1/24) bowled their hearts out but Pakistan stood tall in the end as Ireland ended their campaign winless.

While chasing, Pakistan opener Saim Ayub looked in good nick as he slammed a six and two fours before top-edging Adair to keeper Lorcan Tucker. Mohammad Rizwan hit three fours but was sent back by McCarthy when Pakistan were 39 for 2.

In the next three overs, Pakistan lost four quick wickets — Fakhar Zaman (5), Usman Khan (2), Shadab Khan (0) and Imad Wasim (4) — to find themselves in deep trouble.

Babar held on at the other end while Abbas made a 21-ball 17 and then Shaheen blasted two big blows to end the proceedings.

Earlier, Ireland had a nightmarish start as Afridi and Amir left them tottering at 4 for three in the second over.

The left-arm pacer Afridi struck twice in three balls, removing Andrew Balbirnie (0) and Tucker (2) in the opening over. Amir then had Ireland skipper Paul Stirling (1) caught behind to leave the top order in disarray.

Harry Tector survived a caught-behind appeal but was trapped by Afridi in the next ball with a fuller delivery that hit his back leg to reduce Ireland to 15 for 4 in three overs.

George Dockrell blasted two fours to ease the pressure a bit but he fell to a caught and bowled by Amir, who deceived him with a slower ball, as half of the Irish side returned to the hut within powerplay.

Rauf then joined the party, getting rid of Campher who went for a pull only to see the top-edge landing in the safe hands of Ayub.

Delany clobbered the first six of Ireland innings off Rauf in the 9th over, before hammering spinner Shadab Khan for a six over long-on to bring up the team fifty. Delany ended the over with a four after Rauf missed an overhead catch at the boundary.

Abbas was next in line for Delany as he smoked a pitched up delivery from the pacer over deep square leg for another maximum.

Imad was then introduced into the attack and he dismissed the dangerous-looking Delany with a ball that bounced and spun as the 44-run stand was broken reducing Ireland to 76 for 7.

The number 10 Joshua Little (22 not out) then threw his bat to take Ireland past the 100-run mark. But it was too late too little.

Pakistan cricket is at its lowest point and needs to make radical changes, all-rounder Imad Wasim said after the team failed to get out of the group stage of the T20 World Cup. The 2009 champions, beaten finalists two years ago, lost to the USA and India with their sole victory coming against Canada. Pakistan’s final game is on Sunday against Ireland, which is now a dead rubber with both teams already eliminated. Asked about the exit, with the USA beating Pakistan to Super Eight qualification, along with India, Wasim said there was no doubt about the level of disappointment.

“This is the lowest point. You can’t go any lower than this. That’s the fact,” he told a press conference.

Asked whether there now needed to be major changes, the 35-year-old left-arm spinner, said it was clear that radical changes were needed.

“It’s not my domain but I think there should be changes and there should be a drastic change so we can move forward,” he said.

Wasim, who came out of a brief retirement for this tournament, said that the change needed to be far-reaching.

“In everything and every aspect. How to take the game on? How to play the game? This is what I believed in and this is why I came back and tried to do things but it didn’t happen,” he added.

After the shock loss to the USA, Pakistan put up a close fight in defeat against India in New York and Wasim said that the context needed to be understood.

“You can also say the wickets are a bit tougher than what you think and any team can beat anyone. You can see Nepal was almost through. So, things can happen but I think the approach, how we play the game, I think we will change that and all of the boys are eager to do that because this defeat hurt us really badly,” he said.

‘Mindset’

The key change that is needed is in the mental side of the game, added Wasim.

“I’m giving my personal opinion. Don’t make these headlines — it’s all your mindset. What mindset do you want to play the game with? You either play fire with fire, or you play your way.

“So, I personally believe that you should play fire with fire. And even if you lose, you can sit down and say to yourself that on that day we were not good enough,” he said.

“The problem is our team is so good, our players are so good that we are good enough to play any kind of cricket. So you have to get rid of fear of failure mindset.

“In everything — batting, bowling, fielding, you have to get rid of fear of failure mindset. As I said earlier, personnel change doesn’t change anything, just changing the mindset can change a lot of things,” he added.

“We compete with the world’s best teams. Their mindset has changed over time. We used to rule in T20 cricket. I think we have moved back a little now. If you change the mind of the player, you can achieve things beyond your limits. I always believe in this.”

Wasim said he would not make any decision on his future until after Sunday’s game.

“As far as retirement is concerned, there’s a match tomorrow. We’ll play a match and obviously, after that, we’ll think about it and sort out whatever we need to. Because to be honest, a lot of things are going to be sorted out in the Pakistan team. The chairman and the board will sort it out.

“We have given away two games by ourselves. Losing to USA, well, losing is a part of the game, but we shouldn’t have lost to USA. Even against India — we had that game in our hands and we shouldn’t have lost. So, there is no excuse for anything. We are losing matches collectively,” he said.

“After the match against Ireland — we will sit down and talk and then decide. I don’t do anything secretly. I told everyone when I retired last time. If something happens, I will come and tell everyone.”

Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim expressed his disappointment after the team’s shocking exit from the T20 World Cup in the group stage. However, Imad suggested that the team’s disappointing show could be a blessing in disguise as it will give the players a chance to do some soul searching and figure out what needs to be done to avoid this capitulation in the future. Imad, alongside veteran pacer Mohammad Amir, was recalled to the side for the tournament on the back of their performances in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

“A bad thing has happened, but who knows it might be a blessing in disguise. It (the T20 World Cup flop) should be revisited…(we need to) play white-ball the way it should be played,” Imad said in a post-match press conference.

Sharing his views on the harsh criticism of wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan‘s fitness, Imad said he has neither body-shamed anyone or targetted an individual.

“As far as you said about me being an analyst as well, I have always talked only about cricket. “I haven’t talked about individuals, neither have I bodyshamed anyone nor talked personally about that person. A cricketer’s job is to analyse cricket and to tell you whatever is going wrong and whatever is going right,” he added.

Imad insisted that the group stage exit was a tough pill to swallow for the players in the dressing room, adding that they are more gutted than the fans.

“It happens during group stages, there are other teams who have been eliminated…There is a lot of disappointment. We are disappointed more than you guys because this is our profession…It’s all about how you get up and approach the world after falling, how do you react,” he further explained.

He signed off by urging the fans not to forget the human element while doing a post-mortem of the team’s performance.

“We want to tell the Pakistan public that we couldn’t perform and we are the ones to be blamed. Ek baat ye bhi kehna chahunga. Hum bhi insaan hain, humse bhi galti ho sakti hai aur dukh humein bhi hota hai is cheez ka (I want to say one thing. We are also humans, we have made a mistake and we are also sad about it),” he concluded.

The Pakistan Cricket Board on Friday announced their unveiled 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which will kick-start from June 1 in the USA and Caribbean. The side will be led by Babar Azam. Of the 15 players, Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Saim Ayub and Usman Khan have been picked for their maiden T20 World Cup, while Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim last appeared in the 2016 and 2021 tournaments, respectively. The other eight players participated in the 2022 event in Australia.

“This is an extremely talented and balanced side that has a mixture of youth and experience. These players have been playing together for some time and look well prepared and settled for next month’s event.

“Haris Rauf is fully fit and bowling well in the nets. It would have been nice if he had gotten an outing at Headingley, but we remain confident that he will continue to maintain an upward trajectory in the upcoming matches, as he will have an important role to play along with other strike bowlers in the T20 World Cup.”

Pakistan has one of the most impressive records in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup since its inception in 2007 in South Africa. It won the 2009 event under Younis Khan and twice reached the finals under Shoaib Malik (2007) and Babar Azam (2022). In 2010, 2012, and 2021, it reached the last-four stage.

Squad: Babar Azam (captain), Mohammad Rizwan, Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, Usman Khan, Azam Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Amir, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, Abbas Afridi, Haris Rauf, Abrar Ahmed

The Babar Azam-led Pakistan cricket team is currently preparing for two important series before the 2024 T20 World Cup. In the T20 WC, India and Pakistan are in Group A along with Ireland, Canada and USA. Pakistan will start its campaign against USA on June 6. The three-match Ireland series starts on May 10 while the England series starts on May 22. Ahead of the tour, a video clip went viral on Monday, showing Pakistan captain Babar talking quite animatedly to Imad Wasim. The teammates appear to try and separate them.

Later another video clip emerged, where Imad Wasim can be heard as saying there is no fight.

Recently, Pakistan captain Babar Azam said the team will be planning their tactics against star India batter Virat Kohli for the high-octane clash with Men in Blue in the ICC T20 World Cup at West Indies/USA this year.

Babar made this statement ahead of his side’s T20I series against Ireland from March 10 onwards, which consists of three T20Is to be played in Dublin. The highly-anticipated clash between two arch-rivals will take place on June 9 in New York.

During the last T20 Cup clash between these two sides back in 2022, Virat played one of the most iconic knocks in the format, scoring 82* in just 53 balls, with six fours and four sixes during a tense run-chase of 160 runs when India was 31/4 at one point.

Speaking at the media conference on Monday, Babar said that though the team does not plan against one particular player, but they will be planning against Virat, who he called as “one of the best players.”

“As a team, you always plan against different teams and according to their strengths. We do not plan anything against one player. We plan for all 11 players. We do not know much about the conditions in New York and we will plan accordingly. He [Virat Kohli] is one of the best players and we will plan against him as well,” he said.

Virat has an exceptional record against Pakistan in T20Is. In 10 matches, he has scored 488 runs at an average of 81.33 and a strike rate of over 123, with five half-centuries. His best score is 82*.

Four months after retiring from international cricket, Pakistan spin all-rounder Imad Wasim has made himself available for national selection after playing a key role in Islamabad United’s title triumph in the PSL. The 35-year old had retired in November 2023, saying it was time for him to focus on playing in foreign leagues. Imad was adjudged the Man-of-the-match for his franchise, Islamabad United in the Eliminator 2 and final of the Pakistan Super League 9 on Saturday and Monday.

He had taken a fifer (5/23) in the PSL final as Islamabad grabbed the title for the first time since 2018.

Imad told media that he wanted to serve Pakistan again.

“I made a name for myself while playing for Pakistan and if my country needs me, I will be available. If not, I have no issues with that,” Imad said.

“Shaheen called me after I retired but I told him that we will talk after PSL,” he added.

The Pakistani selectors are due to announce a pool of players for a training camp at an Army base in Kakul from March 25. The selectors will announce the team for the home T20 series against New Zealand in April from the same batch.

It was no secret that Imad retireddue to differences with captain Babar Azam. The two didn’t get along even while playing for Karachi Kings in the previous PSL editions where Babar was captain.

According to insiders, Babar and the team management was not very happy with Imad’s attitude. He had gained a reputation for not being a team man.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 final between Islamabad United and Multan Sultans was hit by a massive controversy as Imad Wasim was pictured smoking inside the dressing room at the National Stadium in Karachi. Wasim, who took a five-wicket haul for Islamabad United, was caught on camera smoking during the Multan Sultans innings and the video led to a lot of criticism from fans on social media. The controversy did not stop there as after Islamabad United clinched the trophy with a narrow win, Imad celebrated with a smoking gesture – leading to more conversations online.

Resilient Islamabad United snatched a last-ball thriller to beat Multan Sultans by two wickets in the final in Karachi on Monday, winning the Pakistan Super League title for a third time.

Young Hunain Shah pushed the final delivery of the last over for a boundary towards backward point as United overhauled a modest 160-run target at the National Stadium.

United needed eight runs off the 20th over bowled by Mohammad Ali and Hunain’s elder brother Naseem Shah hit a boundary off the second delivery but with a single needed off the last two deliveries he fell caught behind.

However, Hunain kept his cool to give Sultans defeat in their third successive finals.

Earlier, Sultans managed 159-9 in their 20 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat.

They were guided by a 40-ball 57 by Usman Khan and 26 by skipper Mohammad Rizwan.

Khan hit seven boundaries and a six but once he fell in the 16th over, Sultans lost five wickets for just 13 runs, slumping to 127-9. Left-arm spinner Imad Wasim was the chief destroyer with 5-23 while Naseem grabbed 3-32.

It was Iftikhar Ahmed who revived the innings with a whirlwind 20-ball 32 not out with three sixes and as many boundaries, scoring 31 in the last two overs. United were also derailed from 121-4 to 129-7 but Wasim guided late order batters with a calm 17-ball 19 to help them cross the finish line.

United, Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators qualified for the play-offs while Karachi Kings and defending champions Lahore Qalandars were knocked out in the first round of the ninth edition of the League.

Islamabad United all-rounder Imad Wasim put in a match-winning show in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 final on Sunday, taking a 5-wicket haul to restrict Multan Sultans to 159/9. Wasim picked up some important wickets of Yasir Khan, David Willey, etc. to register one of his finest performances in the T20 league. But, not long after his magical spell on the field, Wasim triggered a big controversy after he was caught smoking in the team’s dressing room while the match was going on.

The shutterbugs zoomed in on Imad, showing him smoking a cigarette in the Multan Sultans dressing room, and the video went viral on social media, with the player receiving plenty of backlash.

Wasim’s fabulous figures of 5/23 in 4 overs laid the foundation for Islamabad United’s triumph in the final. After restricting Multan Sultans to 159, Wasim’s side did struggle a bit in reaching the target. It was on the final ball of the match that the winning runs were eventually scored.

“Didn’t know that it would go on to be the best ever tournament. Just wanted to have an impact in the team’s win. It was a new experience – taking five wickets in the final. Took lesson that we should’ve finished it one over earlier. I’m happy playing cricket. Trying my utmost to contribute for the team. 4-5 years of cricket left in me,” Imad Wasim said after the final as he was named the player of the match.

Islamabad captain Shadab Khan highlighted the technicalities of the game in the post-match presentation ceremony.

“Felt that the more time I had, could utilise it better with bat. At number 6-7, I don’t have the power game. Have tried to fix my technical issues as a bowler. That’s a long process, and the improvements will come. Watching the match is tough for me. In the middle I don’t feel pressure, but watching it from outside is tough. I make life difficult for people next to me as well, so I don’t sit with batters who are supposed to walk in next. Special mention to the owners who have backed me. I was captain for five years and we didn’t reach final, but they backed me. Lot of things I feel that make this trophy very important for us,” he said.

A poor incident caught the limelight during the Eliminator 2 of Pakistan Super League between Peshawar Zalmi and Islamabad United on Saturday. At the game at National Stadium in Karachi, a section of fans taunted United all-rounder Imad Wasim with “Babar Babar” chants. The video of the incident went viral on social media with Islamabad United captain Shadab Khan also commenting on the issue after the game. Shadab was quite vocal to say that acts like those do hurt the players.

“Obviously dukh hota hai. Itne lambe arse ke liye Pakistan ke liye khelna, performance karna. Aisi cheezein jo hamaara crowd hai woh aisi cheezein kar raha tha. Aapko feel hota hai ‘Maine isi mulk ke liye khela hai aur isi mulk ke liye matches jeetayein hain, aur hamaare log aisa treat kar rahe hain’ so woh thoda feel hota hai. (It’s obviously saddening to see. To play and perform for Pakistan for such a long time. And then to see the crowd doing this to such player. As a player you feel like, ‘I’ve played for this country, I’ve won matches for this country, and the people of our country treat us like this,’ so it does feel a bit),” said Shadab.

Notably, Imad had earlier criticized Babar during the Cricket World Cup 2023, where Pakistan produced a poor show. The fans on Saturday taunted him with “Babar Babar” chants because of the remark he had passed.

Talking about the game, Islamabad United made their way into the final with a five-wicket win over Peshawar Zalmi with Imad playing a crucial role in the victory.

Islamabad United captain Shadab won the toss and invited the opponent team to bat first. Led by Saim Ayub‘s 73 and Mohammad Haris‘ 40, Peshawar Zalmi posted 185 for 5 in the stipulated 20 overs. Imad could not get any wicket but bowled an economical spell of 0/23 in four overs.

In reply, Islamabad got home in 19 overs, thanks to Imad’s 59 not out off 40 balls and Haider Ali‘s 52 not out off 29.

Islamabad United will face Multan Sultans in the final of PSL 2024 on March 18 at the National Stadium, Karachi.
