A lot has been discussed and said so far about the catch taken by Suryakumar Yadav in the final of 2024 T20 World Cup against South Africa in Barbados. While many have been in awe of the stunner taken by the player in a tense situation in the game, some raised questions over the fairness of the catch. Suryakumar, who earlier spoke about how he managed to take that catch, has finally broken his silence over the controversy regarding it.

Needing 16 runs from the final over, South Africa had David Miller on the strike. The southpaw hit a wide full toss from Hardik Pandya but Suryakumar was able to catch the ball inside the ropes at long-off, realised it just as he went over the boundary, and then came back in to complete an astonishing catch.

Several video angles of the catch went viral on social media with many claiming that it was not a fair catch.

Some user on social media also claimed that the boundary cushion was pushed outside deliberately during the second innings to give the Indian team an unfair advantage.

“I didn’t touch the line when I caught the ball in the final match against South Africa. We can’t keep everyone happy. I did what occurred to me as correct. By the grace of God, I was there when the ball came towards me. I got a chance to take the catch. I am relishing that moment,” Suryakumar Yadav told media.

“I had practiced many times to take a catch like that one. During the match, my mind was calm. God gave me an opportunity to do well for the country,” he added.

For many old-time fans, the catch brought back memories of the unbelievable one taken by Kapil Dev in the 1983 World Cup final against the mighty West Indies. Viv Richards top-edged a Madan Lal delivery and Kapil ran sideways from mid-on to take the blinder.

The discussion over Suryakumar Yadav‘s sensational catch in the final over of 2024 T20 World Cup summit clash is not going to end anytime soon. The stunning grab from Suryakumar at the boundary line was so close that it has led to several controversies. Needing 16 runs from the final over, South Africa had David Miller on the strike. The southpaw hit a wide full toss from Hardik Pandya but Suryakumar catch the ball inside the ropes at long-off, released it just as he went over the boundary and then came back in to complete an astonishing catch.

In a fresh criticism of the catch, many user on social media claimed that the boundary cushion was pushed outside deliberately during the second innings to give Indian team an unfair advantage.

The allegation was wrong as the boundary cushion was outside the line even during the Indian innings.

It is quite a common way of changing the positions of boundary ropes ahead of the a match, depending on the pitch being selected for a game.

“I am just grateful to be in that moment to do something special for the country…god’s plan it was,” Suryakumar told PTI about the catch.

For many old-time fans, the catch brought back memories of the unbelievable one taken by Kapil Dev in the 1983 World Cup final against the mighty West Indies. Viv Richards top-edged a Madan Lal delivery and Kapil ran sideways from mid-on to take the blinder.

Kolkata Knight Riders bowling unit performed in unison to win a battle of attrition against five-time champions Mumbai Indians by 24 runs in an IPL match at Wankhede Stadium on Friday. If KKR batters were guilty of not working out their game plan on the go in the first half to be bowled out for just 169 with Venkatesh Iyer contributing 70, Mumbai Indians’ underperforming batters stood no chance on a tricky wicket which demanded both application and patience. They were all-out for 145 in 18.5 overs and are practically out of the competition which has been a nightmare for Hardik Pandya.

It was KKR’s first away win in Mumbai after 12 years and last time they won at the venue, their principal owner Shah Rukh Khan was embroiled in an argument with security staff which led to his ban from the venue for next three years. That year KKR won the trophy and this win took them to 14 points and kept them in contention for a finish among the first two teams.

Despite Suryakumar Yadav‘s brilliant fifty, Mumbai Indians were shot out for 145 in 18.5 overs chasing 170, found wanting with the bat once again as Mitchell Starc (3.5-0-33-4) cleaned up the tail for KKR’s seventh win in 10 matches.

Until he top edged one off a full toss from Andre Russell (2/30), Suryakumar appeared to be proving the difference between the two sides with a top quality knock which brought MI back from the brink.

With six fours and two sixes, Suryakumar made 56 off 35 balls in an innings that kept MI’s hopes alive.

Suryakumar also brought the equation down enough for his side to get over the line after they were reduced to 71/6 at one stage.

But none of the MI batters showed their hand up as KKR ran away with the game with a flurry of wickets towards the end.

Also impressive were KKR’s spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, producing identical figures of 4-0-22-2 to keep the MI batters under the pump.

Having smacked a six and a four off Starc, Ishan Kishan (13) missed connecting a wild heave which resulted in the Aussie knocking down his leg stump.

Naman Dhir (11) hit two fours to start with but he also went for a heave and missed with Chakravarthy striking on his first delivery.

Playing as an impact sub, Rohit Sharma (11) lofted Starc for a spectacular six over extra cover but failed to connect well when he went to pull a short one from Narine.

Manish Pandey covered a fair distance moving backwards to reduce MI to 46 for three in the powerplay.

Chakravarthy ensured a short stay in the middle for MI’s most successful batter this year when he had Tilak Varma (4) caught by Narine at short third man.

The flow of wickets pushed MI on the backfoot and the pressure resulted in further success when Nehal Wadhera (6) chopped one onto his wickets off Narine.

MI skipper and India vice-captain for the upcoming T20 World Cup Hardik Pandya walked out to loud boos once again at home turf Wankhede Stadium only to be outdone by the awkward pace off the surface.

Pandya’s innings lasted only two balls as he too, like a few others, was early into his shot which produced a top edge to be grabbed easily.

Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders’ aggressive approach came a cropper on a sluggish surface as they were bowled out for a paltry 169 despite Venkatesh Iyer’s half-century.

Venkatesh scored 70 off 52 balls but his selfish attitude of trying to preserve his own wicket by sacrificing enforcer Russell certainly cost the Shah Rukh Khan co-owned side 20 runs which didn’t turn out to be costly in the end.

Veteran Pandey scored 42 off 31 balls in a stand of 83 for the sixth wicket with Venkatesh.

Just like the top-order was blown away before the total reached 60, the last five fell for just 29 runs as Jasprit Bumrah (3/18 in 3.5 overs) was too hot to handle with his toe-crushers at the death.

On a two-paced wicket which had the odd delivery coming on to the bat slower than expected, KKR batters were guilty of rushing into their shots and and not reading the track well before formulating their plans.

As a result, half of their side was back in the hut in the powerplay without having anything significant on the board.

After the explosive top order cut a sorry figure, Rinku Singh (9) too squandered an opportunity to bat big, forcing KKR to turn to the experienced Pandey as impact sub for rescue.

PBKS vs MI, IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians Beat Punjab Kings By 9 Runs https://artifex.news/pbks-vs-mi-ipl-2024-mumbai-indians-beat-punjab-kings-by-9-runs-5472351/ Thu, 18 Apr 2024 18:54:39 +0000 https://artifex.news/pbks-vs-mi-ipl-2024-mumbai-indians-beat-punjab-kings-by-9-runs-5472351/ Read More “PBKS vs MI, IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians Beat Punjab Kings By 9 Runs” »

Ashutosh Sharma gave Mumbai Indians a mighty scare with a sensational 61 before the five-time champions scraped through with a nine-run win over Punjab Kings in the IPL in Mullanpur on Thursday. Ashutosh unleashed a flurry of sixes in his 28-ball knock which brought Punjab from the brink to near the finish line but his dismissal in the 18th over turned the game back in favour of Mumbai Indians. Punjab, who were left tottering at 17/4 in their chase of 193 , came back roaring through Ashutosh and Shashank Singh (41 off 25) before ending at 183 all-out in 19.1 overs.

Suryakumar Yadav (78) starred with the bat for Mumbai Indians to take them to 192 for seven.

It was Mumbai’s third win in seven games while Punjab’s slide continued with their fifth loss in seven matches.

Despite an early four-wicket burst from pacers Jasprit Bumrah (3/21) and Gerald Coetzee (3/32), MI once again paid a heavy price of being ordinary with the ball. Akash Madhwal gave away 46 for one wicket in his 3.1 overs.

Ashutosh produced a breathtaking knock, hammering seven sixes and two fours after Shashank’s counterattack brought Punjab back on track following early wickets.

The right-handed Shashank smacked each of his three sixes off leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal (1/26).

Ashutosh was adroit with his strokes particularly on the leg-side.

Harpreet Brar proved he is no mug with the bat either, as the left-handed tailender unleashed lofted hits in his vital 20-ball 21 with two fours and a six. At the top of the order, Prabhsimran Singh’s (0) poor run persisted when the right-hander edged one behind to be caught by a diving Ishan Kishan, with Coetzee redeeming himself after a poor start with the ball.

Bumrah put Mumbai Indians in complete command with twin strikes in his opening over.

On his fourth delivery, the ace pacer fired a vicious in-swinging yorker which left Rilee Rossouw (0) nearly toppling over with his off and middle stump uprooted.

Later in the over, a smart review against an on-field call for a wide resulted in Bumrah bagging his second wicket off an innocuous delivery.

This one, fired down the leg, had the ball kissing Sam Curran’s (6) bat before settling into Ishan Kishan’s glove, which was confirmed by the DRS review.

Coetzee then piled further misery on fallible Punjab as he bounced out Liam Livingstone (1).

Earlier, Suryakumar and Tilak Varma (34 not out off 18) produced gritty knocks on a sluggish wicket to fire Mumbai Indians to a competitive total.

On a typically low and slow surface here, MI batters struggled for timing yet garnered the highest total so far at IPL’s newest venue.

Rohit (36 off 25) and Suryakumar provided the bedrock with a sturdy 81-run stand for the second wicket before Varma and Tim David (14 off seven) found their mojo.

Playing in his 250th IPL match, Rohit brought up his 6,500 runs in the competition.

India vs Pakistan, ODI World Cup 2023: Selection Dilemma, Toss Factor – India’s Areas Of Concern vs Pakistan https://artifex.news/india-vs-pakistan-odi-world-cup-2023-selection-dilemma-toss-factor-indias-areas-of-concern-vs-pakistan-4478166/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 06:29:40 +0000 https://artifex.news/india-vs-pakistan-odi-world-cup-2023-selection-dilemma-toss-factor-indias-areas-of-concern-vs-pakistan-4478166/ Read More “India vs Pakistan, ODI World Cup 2023: Selection Dilemma, Toss Factor – India’s Areas Of Concern vs Pakistan” »

Arch-rivals India and Pakistan will be up against each other in the ODI World Cup 2023 on Saturday. The high-profile game will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Both the teams are undefeated in the ongoing tournament so far registering two wins in apiece. Talking about the Rohit Sharma led team, it defeated Australia by six wickets in its campaign opener and then routed Afghanistan by an eight-wicket margin in a one sided game. Their net run rate (NRR) is +1.500. (Scorecard | Points Table)

On the other hand, Babar Azam-led Pakistan defeated Netherlands by 81 runs in their opening game before handing a six-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka in a high-scoring encounter in Hyderabad. The match also saw Pakistan registering the highest-ever successful ODI chase in World Cup history. Their NRR is +0.927.

While both India and Pakistan will be carrying good form, there are also some areas of concern for them going into the game. Here are the major issues that might trouble India –

The Selection Dilemma

Whether to give benched player Suryakumar Yadav a chance in the crucial match against Pakistan or not must be in the mind of the selection panel. The dilemma arises not only because of the abilities that Suryakumar possesses but also because Shreyas Iyer has failed to impress so far.

Another selection dilemma would be revolving around the possible inclusion of Mohammad Shami. The star pacer is yet to feature in any game this World Cup, but his familiarity with the Narendra Modi Stadium might benefit India more than any other player. The venue is Shami’s home ground in Indian Premier League where he plays for Gujarat Titans.

Rohit Sharma vs Shaheen Afridi

Though Rohit will be entering the Pakistan game on the back of a sensational 131-run knock, his struggle against left-arm pacers at the start of an inning is known to all. Considering the weightage Rohit’s wicket holds, India would want the star batter to continue his good form.

The Toss Factor

The toss could play a crucial role in the India vs Pakistan game. Chasing is comparatively easier at the Narendra Modi Stadium, which usually offers belter tracks. Under lights, the dew factor comes into play which gives an upper hand to the chasing side. If India bowl second, they definitely need to post a big total on the board to give a tough fight to Pakistan.

India vs Australia: Shreyas Iyer To Prove His Fitness, Suryakumar Yadav His Worth During Cricket World Cup Dress Rehearsal https://artifex.news/iyer-to-prove-his-fitness-surya-his-worth-during-wc-dress-rehearsal-4409775/ Thu, 21 Sep 2023 09:37:12 +0000 https://artifex.news/iyer-to-prove-his-fitness-surya-his-worth-during-wc-dress-rehearsal-4409775/ Read More “India vs Australia: Shreyas Iyer To Prove His Fitness, Suryakumar Yadav His Worth During Cricket World Cup Dress Rehearsal” »

Shreyas Iyer’s dodgy match-fitness will be put to ultimate test while Suryakumar Yadav’s desperation to alter a dismal ODI record adds a fascinating sub-text to India’s three-game series against Australia, which also serves as final dress rehearsal before the World Cup, beginning next month. With pillars of Indian batting – skipper Rohit Sharma and the brilliant Virat Kohli — resting for the first two games along with lead spinner Kuldeep Yadav and premier all-rounder Hardik Pandya, it will be head coach Rahul Dravid’s final chance to assess his bench strength.

The two Mumbai batters – both very different players from each other — are fighting their own little battles to be a part of the most important tournament of their lives.

The 28-year-old Iyer hasn’t played much cricket in last six months due to stress fracture surgery. A stiff back just before an Asia Cup match against Pakistan raised questions about his fitness.

As chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar has said that Iyer is good to go in the three games but whether his body is holding for 100 overs during the three games over next five days, will be observed keenly.

As much as Ishan Kishan has done his bit, India will need Iyer, the proverbial slayer of spin bowling in the middle overs during the World Cup.

For Surya, literally ‘SKY’ has been the limit in T20Is but before anything else, he perhaps need an uncluttered mind about what kind of role is he looking at in ODI cricket.

In today’s day and age, 27 ODIs are a lot and less than 25 average is neither a true reflection of his talent nor his capabilities.

Surya won’t be a starter in playing XI during tyhe World Cup but for his own good, he would want the team management to be assured that they didn’t make a wrong choice. Tilak Varma is hot on his heels and at 33, he won’t practically get a shot at another 50-over World Cup.

‘Ash’ is name of the game

The small quadriceps tear that left-arm spinner Axar Patel suffered has opened an unlikely door for 37-year-old Ravichandran Ashwin to play his third and what could likely be his last 50 over World Cup in case the former doesn’t recover in time.

Even two weeks back, Ashwin was not even in Indian team management’s radar and now the crafty veteran and his younger state-mate Washington Sundar are locked in a battle for an outside chance to make it to the squad.

If one goes by the buzz, Ashwin even if he doesn’t do well in the upcoming games, is way ahead of Washington in terms of probable chance of a look-in. Ashwin’s battle against David Warner and Steve Smith could be a fan’s delight.

The absence of Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya will give both Ashwin and Washington, a chance to showcase what they have to offer to the team.

But, there is every possibility that even if Ashwin does brilliantly, the team management will go with Axar if he recovers on time and plays the third ODI.

Usually, a small tear takes two weeks to heal and for a spinner, it is not a serious injury unlike for fast bowlers, where it takes more time before they can go full steam. Hence India will remain hopeful about getting Axar fit before the tournament proper starts.

Team Combination

With no Rohit at the top of the order, Ishan Kishan is likely to open with Shubman Gill while Kohli’s place is taken by Iyer, who needs game time.

India’s Asian Games-bound skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad is in the squad more as a cover and could be released after the second game as he would link up with T20 team flying to Hangzhou on September 28.

India haven’t rested any of its fast bowlers but Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj may play two of the three games as three 50-over games have been slotted in five days and it also includes travel. Workload management of two pacers will be paramount.

Australia, the team to beat in World Cup

Australia despite losing 2-3 to South Africa recently had a quality series even as skipper Pat Cummins’ injury keeps bothering them.

But having won the last ODI series in India in March and being one of the international teams which has regularly cracked the 50-over code in sub-continent, there couldn’t have been a better preparation going into a marquee event where both countries will incidentally meet again on October 8.

Travis Head’s injury gave Marnus Labuschagne a chance which he has taken with both hands but it will be Australia’s bowling attack that will be put to test on three of the flattest decks that one comes across in sub-continent.

Squads

India: KL Rahul (C & WK), Ravindra Jadeja (Vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.

Australia: Pant Cummins (Captain), Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Adam Zampa, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Starc, Steve Smith, David Warner, Josh Heselwood, Spencer Johnson, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tanvir Sangha, Matt Short.

Match Starts: 1:30 pm.
