What binds Sunrisers Hyderabad’s explosive batting engine and a bowling attack that has stubbornly held its own on unforgiving surfaces? Nitish Kumar Reddy. Perhaps the only player who truly straddles both worlds.

His absence against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) exposed exactly how vital he is to SRH’s balance. The team missed not just his finishing ability with the bat, but also the control and versatility he offers with the ball – whether with the new ball upfront or through the middle overs.

So when he returned from illness against Punjab Kings, the relief within the Sunrisers camp was palpable. The thinktank no longer needed to redraw plans or reshuffle combinations; equilibrium had returned.

SRH’s top order has understandably grabbed the spotlight this season. Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen have piled up a combined 1,739 runs. On the bowling front, Eshan Malinga leads the charts with 12 wickets, followed by Sakib Hussain (10), while Shivang Kumar, Harsh Dubey and Praful Hinge have chipped in with eight apiece.

And then there is Nitish — quietly occupying the space between those two departments, yet central to both. His 222 runs have come at a strike rate of 166.91, while his seven wickets have arrived at an economy of 10.39 in a tournament where bowlers have routinely been sent on leather hunts.

Against Punjab Kings, he once again underlined his value. A rapid 29 off just 13 balls gave SRH added momentum in the death before he returned to dismiss the seemingly unstoppable Prabhsimran Singh. He ended the night with impressive figures too – two overs, one wicket, and just 11 runs conceded.

SRH’s assistant coach admitted the side is a different proposition when Nitish is available and contributing in both disciplines.

“Any team will always say that they function better when they have got an all-rounder who’s playing well and contributing both with bat and ball. And that’s exactly what Nitish is doing at the moment. He’s confident, he’s playing really well with the bat, he’s showing great intent as soon as he comes out with the bat.”

“And then the bowling as well. He’s just nudged his pace up (from the mid 120s to upper 130s) this season. He’s swinging the new ball when he’s getting that opportunity to bowl in the PowerPlay and he’s creating opportunities.”

For all the debate around the Impact Player rule supposedly sounding the death knell for genuine all-rounders in the IPL, Nitish has become a compelling counterargument. He is not merely surviving in this format – he is shaping matches from multiple fronts.

SRH’s title ambitions this season will rest on several pillars, but few may prove as crucial as the 22-year-old. Sometimes, a player’s true worth is not measured in the runs he scores or the wickets he takes, but in the void he leaves behind when he is missing.

For Sunrisers, Nitish has become exactly that presence — the thread that quietly binds together a side built on explosive batting and relentless intent. In a team filled with stars, he has emerged as the balance they cannot afford to lose.

IPL 2026 | Nitish offers balance and makes life a lot easier: Vettori https://artifex.news/article70944021-ece/ Tue, 05 May 2026 21:35:00 +0000 https://artifex.news/article70944021-ece/ Read More “IPL 2026 | Nitish offers balance and makes life a lot easier: Vettori” »

Nitish Kumar’s absence against Kolkata Knight Riders forced the Sunrisers Hyderabad into an unsuccessful middle-order reshuffle. However, Daniel Vettori’s side is set for a timely boost with the return of the all-rounder, who appeared in fine touch during Tuesday’s training session.

“Every team has that player who makes selection quite straightforward. Against KKR, we picked Smaran as we needed a batter and then had to manoeuvre around for another seamer. Nitish, much like a Marco Jansen or Marcus Stoinis, offers balance and makes my life a lot easier,” Vettori said ahead of SRH’s clash against the Punjab Kings.

After spinners Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine set the tone for Kolkata Knight Riders’ seven-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, the 166-run chase was handled with calm authority.

Finn Allen’s blistering start meant KKR was well ahead, and from there, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and skipper Ajinkya Rahane stitched together a risk-free 84-run partnership to put the visitor on the brink of victory. Raghuvanshi, who raised a composed half-century – his third of the season – said that his focus remained in the moment rather than on the scoreboard.

“With the older ball, the pitch got a little tougher. It got slower, so the start that Ajinkya bhaiya and Finn gave us was very crucial. We got in front of the game in the PowerPlay and it got easier from there.”

Like a runaway train stopped in its tracks, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s batting pyrotechnics — so often relentless and unstoppable — were brought to a screeching halt by Kolkata Knight Riders in their IPL 2026 clash on Sunday. And once that momentum slipped away, the home side never quite recovered.

“We just lost wickets at crucial times and in T20 games it’s really hard to regain the momentum,” head coach Daniel Vettori stated after the Sunrisers’ five-game winning run came to an end.

“Even if the wicket was a bit slow, 160 was incredibly difficult to defend. But we fought hard after the PowerPlay to give (ourselves) a slim chance. But they managed to chase really well.”

Sunrisers Hyderabad, in quintessential fashion, began its IPL clash against Kolkata Knight Riders with an onslaught so ferocious it felt like the game might be over before it had properly begun. Boundaries flew, the scoreboard spiralled, and KKR was pushed to the brink as SRH went past the 100-run mark in a blink-and-you-miss-it 8.5 overs.

That chaos, stunning and without warning, gave way for a spectacular collapse, courtesy an adamant spin chokehold by Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine that eventually set up a seven-wicket victory for the visitors at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday.

Muttiah Muralitharan isn’t surprised by the run-fest that the Indian Premier League has turned into in the ongoing edition, but the Sunrisers Hyderabad spin-bowling coach believes the answer lies in balanced surfaces, not the size of boundaries.

Minutes after SRH overhauled the target of 244 against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede — the fourth-highest successful run chase in IPL history — Muralitharan pointed to tracks rather than dimensions as the key lever.

Mumbai Indians finds itself staring at an all-too-familiar mid-season abyss. Two wins in seven games, a churn of combinations and a campaign yet to find rhythm — the five-time champion heads into Wednesday’s (April 29, 2026) clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium with its back firmly against the wall.

In contrast, SRH has surged into the top four, riding on a settled combination and an imposing batting unit, with the exception of Travis Head. The contrast in trajectories could not be starker.

In Abhishek Sharma’s T20 playbook, the white Kookaburra ball is an object destined to be dispatched into the stands at every available opportunity.

At the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday (April 21, 2026), the southpaw (135 n.o., 68b, 10×4, 10×6) flaunted that destructive template with relish, lifting Sunrisers Hyderabad to a daunting 242 for two and setting up a 47-run win against Delhi Capitals in IPL-19. Abhishek was well-supported by Travis Head, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen.

Nitish Kumar has embraced greater prominence with the ball for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026. Having bowled just 23.1 overs in the previous three editions of the tournament, he has already delivered 13 overs in six games in 2026.

The 26-year-old has made breakthroughs with the new ball, and also chipped in during the death overs. He has done all of this at quicker speeds, having worked with pace-bowling coach Steffan Jones prior to the season on consistently hitting the 140kph mark.
