Sunrisers Hyderabad has the pedigree of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head at the top of the order.

For Rajasthan Royals, the task of offering explosive starts with the willow falls on the pair of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal. How these dynamic left-handed openers fare in tandem may go a long way towards deciding the outcome of the IPL 2026 Eliminator at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium in New Chandigarh on Wednesday (May 27, 2026).

“Both opening pairs are destructive in their own ways. We’ve obviously seen for a few years now the dynamic partnership that we have with Travis and Abhishek,” said SRH assistant coach James Franklin in the lead-up to the clash against Royals.

“And then there’s been the emergence of Sooryavanshi and Jaiswal for RR from the back end of last year’s IPL. As an opening partnership, they have been equally destructive. So I dare say both bowling line-ups have got their work cut out for them, but that makes the game exciting for everyone involved.”

Among these belligerent batters, Head has been a tad subdued by his usual standards. According to Franklin, however, there is no cause for concern.

“More than individual form or scores, we look at the partnership. We look at the way that he and Abhishek put pressure back on opposition bowlers,” the New Zealander explained.

“So tomorrow [Wednesday] is another opportunity for Travis and Abhishek to go and stamp their mark on the game. There is no doubt about Travis’ ability to play a match-winning role for us”.

IPL 2026 Eliminator | Reading situations key for RR middle-order: Shanaka https://artifex.news/article71025933-ece/ Tue, 26 May 2026 15:13:00 +0000 https://artifex.news/article71025933-ece/ Read More “IPL 2026 Eliminator | Reading situations key for RR middle-order: Shanaka” »

In Rajasthan Royals’ run to the playoffs of IPL 2026, the middle-order has been its soft underbelly.

While the top three of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel have compiled more than 350 runs each, no other batter has even managed a tally of 300 runs in the tournament’s 19th edition.

All-rounder Dasun Shanaka, who has played five games this season, said that the middle-order batters need to take a bit of time to assess the situation at hand.

“Most times, the top-order has done the job. It’s about handling different situations. Following the top-order batters, who are playing at a high strike-rate, there is pressure. The batters in the middle-order need to take a bit of time to establish themselves. As someone who has played a lot of cricket there, I feel we need to stay in longer. That’s the key to success in these tough situations,” the 34-year-old Sri Lankan said on Tuesday (May 26, 2026), on the eve of RR’s Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad here.

Going into the season, RR’s decision to appoint Riyan Parag as skipper faced some flak. Asked for his view on how the 24-year-old had fared in his maiden season as full-time captain, Shanaka said: “Parag sticks to his decisions. That’s what is important. Many people criticise, but I see him as a great leader in the making. I am also a guy who likes to learn from different people. I am also learning from him. Obviously, I am passing messages to him as well, which is really important.”

Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain’s respective four-fors on debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Rajasthan Royals on Monday (April 13, 2026) arrived as a panacea for its bowling deficiencies. From the feisty opening over where 24-year-old Praful scooped up three wickets to a resurgence towards the death where SRH snuffed Royals’ fightback, this bite with the ball is what the management was praying for and working towards.

“Given where they’ve come from, what both have done today is massive. My only plea to both of them was for them to enjoy the game. To see them come out and bowl this way was a dream come true for the team, 100%,” bowling coach Varun Aaron told reporters.

The restless, untested duo of Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain shared eight wickets on their debut to bowl Sunrisers Hyderabad to a 57-run win over Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on Monday.

When handed the daunting task of taming the JaiSurya phenomenon, Praful came through spectacularly. No bowler in the history of IPL had scalped three in the opening over, let alone a debutant, until the 24-year-old from Vidarbha came knocking.

Rajasthan Royals’ Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara has admitted that fatigue played a big part in their poor run at the back end of the ongoing IPL, which possibly derailed their campaign.

RR, who won eight out of their opening nine matches, were firmly in contention to finish in the top two.

But, the Sanju Samson-led side endured a four-match losing streak besides a washout tie, which forced the side to settle for a third-place finish.

Although they bounced back with a win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Eliminator, Sunrisers Hyderabad got the better of RR in Qualifier 2 here on Friday.

“I think it was a great season for us. We started well, and then we lost a close game to SRH in Hyderabad and (in) Delhi also, we put ourselves in winning positions,” he said during the post-match media interaction after their 36-run loss to SRH.

“Sometimes you have streaks. RCB lost almost every game at the start and then caught up. That’s how T20 goes. All we can do is put ourselves in positions of playoffs and vying for finals, which we did.”

“I think all the guys throughout the season played phenomenal cricket. There was a little bit of fatigue at the back end, but it doesn’t matter when you’re in games like this. You gotta turn up and perform.”

Chasing a target of 176, RR were 65 for two by the eighth over, but kept on losing wickets in clusters thereafter, leading to their downfall.

Commenting on the defeat, Sangakkara felt the middle-order could have done better.

“It was just a case of being smart and keeping our composure. Unfortunately, when you lose wickets in clusters, it becomes hard,” he said.

“Even in the RCB chase, if you lose wickets, it gets tense and close. Unfortunately, we needed a little bit more from our middle-order.”

RR were also without Jos Buttler, who has been a force for the team in the top order.

While Sangakkara said that international scheduling was something that they couldn’t control, he felt that other batters should have stepped up.

“We always say that the best ability is availability, and unfortunately, we lost Jos. He is a big loss, without a doubt,” he said.

“When you’re in a playoff like this, and you’ve got that start without Jos, we expect the other batters to also step up.” RR have a few players travelling to the Americas for the T20 World Cup next month, namely Avesh Khan, Sanju Samson, Yuzvendra Chahal and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Avesh has been the side’s highest wicket-taker for the season, with 19 wickets in 15 innings at an economy of 9.59, and Sangakkara was all-praise for the fast bowler.

“We traded Devdutt Padikkal (to Lucknow Super Giants) for Avesh because we knew how good he was, and he’s shown that throughout this tournament. And, that’s why he’s a travelling reserve as well for the World Cup for India,” he said. “He’s got a great presence and good clarity. He’s very good at finishing off in the death. I think he’s been phenomenal for RR.

“And, we couldn’t ask for a better trier. He bowls a lot in training. He’s always up for a game. I thought again today he was outstanding.”

“Don’t have time to commit full-time to an India coaching job”

Sangakkara clearly refused any intention of applying for the India head coach’s job, citing time issues.

“I have not been approached, and I don’t have time to commit full-time to an India coaching job. Happy with my stint with Royals, and let’s see how it goes,” he concluded.

A splendid bowling effort, masterminded by left-arm spinners Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Sharma, helped Sunrisers Hyderabad defeat Rajasthan Royals by 36 runs at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Friday and march into its third Indian Premier League final.

Needing 176 to win, RR seemed on course at 65 for one, only for Shahbaz (4-0-23-3) and Abhishek (4-0-24-2), who had collectively taken just three wickets all season, to bamboozle the batters. Late-evening dew, which has hampered many a bowling side, made no appearance as SRH restricted RR to 139 for seven to set up a date with Kolkata Knight Riders for the ultimate prize on Sunday.

RR began slowly, reaching 32 for one after five overs. But in the sixth, Yashasvi Jaiswal (42, 21b, 4×4, 3×6) made the play, flat-batting Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a majestic six down the ground before following it up with three boundaries.

Spinners take over

However, the introduction of Shahbaz and Abhishek pegged RR back. Jaiswal welcomed Shahbaz with a reverse-swept six, but soon miscued one to long-off. Skipper Sanju Samson’s slap off Abhishek went straight to Aiden Markram at long-on.

Shahbaz went on to struck twice in the 12th over as Riyan Parag mistimed to deep mid-wicket and R. Ashwin was caught behind.

When Abhishek rattled Shimron Hetmyer’s stumps in the 14th over (92 for six), the 2008 champion’s challenge was all but over. Dhruv Jurel (56 n.o., 35b, 7×4, 2×6) and Rovman Powell kept the flame flickering with a 32-run association. But Abhishek shut down the contest with a fine running catch from deep midwicket to send Powell back.

Earlier, after being asked to bat, SRH scored 68 in the PowerPlay, courtesy some belligerent hitting by Rahul Tripathi (37, 15b, 5×4, 2×6). If not for the wicket-taking nous of Trent Boult (three for 45), SRH could have had more.

Abhishek hit Boult for a six in front of square three balls into the innings and creamed the next ball down the ground for four. But Boult had his man, with the ball hitting high on the bat and lobbing to cover.

For the next three overs, it was all Tripathi. The 33-year-old was brutal on Ashwin, sweeping, lofting and late-cutting the offie for fours. Boult was dispatched beautifully through cover and point, and then clipped over fine-leg for a tremendous six. But the left-arm quick outwitted Tripathi too, having him caught at short-third with a slow bouncer.

After the PowerPlay, the runs dried up. The biggest barren patch — a 29-ball boundary drought from overs 7.5 to 12.3 — sent the crowd into a deep slumber despite the best efforts of the stadium jockey.

But Heinrich Klaasen’s was an assured presence. The burly 32-year-old muscled the ball four times into the stands (50, 34b, 4×6), thrice off Chahal and once off Boult.

Sandeep Sharma and Avesh Khan were excellent for RR, conceding just 52 runs from eight overs and claiming five wickets. Sandeep even accounted for the uncharacteristically sedate Travis Head (34, 28b, 3×4, 1×6) with a slow bouncer and rearranged the dangerous Klaasen’s stumps with a slow yorker. For a while the bowling effort appeared match-winning, but it was not to be.

The wheel of fortune spins quite fast in the Indian Premier League. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals, who meet in Qualifier 2 at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here, will attest to this.

SRH went into Tuesday’s Qualifier 1 on the back of authoritative victories over Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings, only for table-topper Kolkata Knight Riders to reduce it to rubble.

RR went into Wednesday’s Eliminator following a five-game winless run that included four defeats, but managed to edge out the high-flying Royal Challengers Bengaluru by four wickets

Shifts in momentum

Friday’s clash will thus pit two sides that have seen shifts in momentum, and each side will be hoping that Lady Fortuna sheds her capricious whims and smiles only in its direction.

SRH leader Pat Cummins explained his team’s effort against KKR as “bit off the pace” and seemed glad that it had not come in a must-win game. After all, one of the perks of finishing in the top-two is that you get two bites at the cherry.

SRH will hope that the second bite too doesn’t taste as bitter. For that, the top-order — led by the marauder-in-chief Travis Head and little tornado Abhishek Sharma that has helped amass 100-plus PowerPlay runs twice — has to recover after being stung by Mitchell Starc.

It now has the arduous task of countering another left-arm quick in Kiwi Trent Boult, whose swing and guile pegged RCB back in the PowerPlay. The world-class duo of R. Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal — an asset SRH doesn’t possess — will present a spin challenge like no other and there is also the death-overs craftiness of Avesh Khan to deal with.

Ashwin, in fact, turned in a Player-of-the-Match performance against RCB (4-0-19-2) and Chepauk is his home turf, the spin-friendly conditions of which he knows like the back of his hand.

RR will also take heart from Shimron Hetmyer’s return and his crucial role — alongside compatriot Rovman Powell — in handling a nervous chase versus RCB.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who has replaced fellow Englishman Jos Buttler in the XI, provided a glimpse of his bonafide T20 credentials in the last match. If he comes good on the grandest of stages, RR will be extremely pleased.

With the conditions set to be hot and humid, and dew expected to arrive during the second innings, teams would ideally prefer chasing. But five of SRH’s eight wins have come batting first. It floundered in its last attempt to set a target. Will it back its strength or go with accepted wisdom?

Sunrisers Hyderabad: Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Aiden Markram, Abdul Samad, Nitish Reddy, Shahbaz Ahmed, Pat Cummins (c), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat, T Natarajan, Mayank Markande, Umran Malik, Anmolpreet Singh, Glenn Phillips (wk), Rahul Tripathi, Washington Sundar, Upendra Yadav (wk), Jhathavedh Subramanyan, Sanvir Singh, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Marco Jansen, Akash Maharaj Singh and Mayank Agarwal.

Experienced seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar said he wasn’t thinking much and just focussed on bowling two good deliveries after scripting Sunrisers Hyderabad’s sensational one-run win with a last-ball wicket in an IPL thriller here on Thursday.

Defending 12 in the final over, Bhuvneshwar trapped Rovman Powell in front of the wicket in the last ball to stop Rajasthan Royal’s run chase at 200 for 7 and pull off a heist in the end.

Sunrisers had scored 201 for 3 in their 20 overs, riding on fifties from Travis Head and Nitish Reddy.

“I wasn’t thinking much about the result in the last over. There was no discussion in the last over, was just focussed on the process. Was thinking just about bowling two good balls, anything could have happened,” Bhuvneshwar, who was adjudged the Player of the Match for his 3 for 41, said at the post-match presentation.

“The ball swung so much, can’t really pinpoint, really enjoyed it. Luckily got wickets today. When the season started thought process was different, but it changed when the batters played in such a way,” he added.

SRH captain Pat Cummins was a happy man after his team managed to snap a two-game losing streak.

“It was an amazing game. That’s T20 cricket. Anything can happen, Bhuvi executed that last ball. You try to take some wickets in the middle. Natarajan is a good yorker bowler, fortunately we got some wickets,” said the Australian pacer , who bowled a superb 19th over conceding just 7 runs.

“We played some games here, thought 200 could have been chased down. He (Nitish Reddy) sums up the conditions pretty well, he’s amazing, great in the field, gives some overs with the ball as well,” Cummins added.

Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson said that even while it seemed his side was cruising to victory he was not certain they would get over the line given the unpredictable nature of the league.

“We have played some really close games this season, won a couple of them and lost this one. Credit to the SRH bowlers for the way they fought back,” he said.

“The margin of errors is very less in the IPL. The game is never done till it is done. It was tough to bat against the new ball and when it got old, it became easier.

He was full of praise for the young duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag who resurrected the Royals’ innings after Jos Buttler and Samson got out for ducks in the first over.

“Credit to both youngsters (Jaiswal and Parag), myself and Jos (Buttler) got out in the powerplay, they played well and got us to that position,” Samson Said.

Entrusted with the task of shepherding Sunrisers Hyderabad’s middle-order, young Nitish Reddy has been doing the job with aplomb at a time when he is seen by many as a future India all-rounder, thanks to his ability to bowl lively medium pace.

Opting to bat in the IPL game against table-toppers Rajasthan Royals here on Thursday, Reddy (76 not out) and Travis Head (58) produced explosive fifties, while Heinrich Klassen made an unbeaten 19-ball 42 to power SRH to 201 for three.

Experienced seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar then did the star turn with a sensational final over as SRH pulled off a heist, stunning RR by just one run in a last-ball thriller to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Nitish, 20, stated that his role was to rebuild the innings after quick wickets.

“From the last two matches, we are losing quick wickets and I have to go. My role is to carry on till the 13th and 14th over so that Klaasen gets a license to bang. There is no point in Klaasen and Samad coming early, but not getting to score freely,” said Nitish at the post-match press conference.

The all-rounder hailed Bhuvneshwar after the veteran pacer bowled a brilliant final over to help Hyderabad seal a dramatic win.

Nitish said he was hopeful that Bhuvneshwar would be able to defend 13 runs in the last over.

“I was looking at who was going to bowl. When I saw Bhuvneshwar was going to bowl, I got the confidence that he was going to pull it off.”

“During his prime, he had done it so many times. I did not think we were going to win, I thought either we’d lose or tie. But that last-ball wicket, I felt so happy,” Nitish said.

During his explosive knock, Nitish smashed RR’s in-form Yuzvendra Chahal for two fours and two sixes in the 13th over. Nitish said that he backed himself to attack the seasoned leg-spinner.

Reddy also said the victory against RR, following losses to Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings, is important.

“Beating RR will boost our confidence, they are at the top of the points table,” he concluded.

Not in my best form: Parag

Rajasthan Royals batter Riyan Parag returned to the top five in the Orange Cape race after striking his fourth fifty of the season.

The 22-year-old Parag slammed 77 off 49 balls but could not help his side chase down the target set by SRH.

Despite his breakout season with the franchise, Parag said he was not in his best form since he could not finish the game.

“I got a lot of areas to improve. I am not in my best form, I would have finished the game otherwise.

“I got a lot of areas to perfect. I try to learn from my mistakes and not repeat them. Is it my best innings? No. I would say that if I get a hundred,” Parag told reporters.

The Assam player said the loss was “dramatic”, adding that his team made a few errors.

“It is never good to end on the losing side. We did a lot of things right. We will focus on them more rather than dwelling on our mistakes. We are at a good position in the points table. Just one bad game I guess.

“We made a few errors in two-three overs and it cost us the game. That is how T20 is, IPL is,” he said.
