OpenAI whistleblower Suchir Balaji died by suicide, San Francisco Police have confirmed citing an autopsy report. Following weeks of investigation and repeated inquiries, officials have confirmed their initial findings, concluding that there is no evidence of homicide, as per a Fortune report.

When the 26-year-old Indian-American was found dead under suspicious circumstances last month, it caused a stir among the public, with Mr Balaji’s parents frequently alleging he was murdered.

In a 13-page report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) and a four-page joint response to the lawsuit, the San Francisco Police and medical examiners announced on Friday that the investigation into Balaji’s death was officially closed.

They confirmed their initial conclusion that he died by suicide.

“The OCME found no evidence or information to establish a cause and manner of death for Mr Balaji other than a suicide by self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head,” read the medical examiner’s report. “SFPD conducted an independent investigation and based on the information SFPD reviewed, there is insufficient evidence to find Mr. Balaji’s death was the result of a homicide.”

However, Mr Balaji’s parents accused the police of lapses in the autopsy and pointed to their failure to acquire CCTV footage from the building where he lived. They added there was no suicide note.

Poornima Rao, Suchir Balaji’s mother, said that SFPD wrote inaccurate information in Autopsy and Police reports. “They have never retrieved CCTV footage from leasing office. We need report from police. We are only requesting transparent investigation,” she wrote on X.

Suchir Balaji was found dead in his apartment on November 26. After working for four years at OpenAI, he left the company when he found that the company was training its chatbot on copyrighted material stolen from the internet.

Balaji died a day after being listed in a court filing as someone whose files OpenAI planned to check as part of a lawsuit filed by individuals who were questioning the company’s procedures. Several well-known writers have filed the complaint, including best-selling author John Grisham.

The 22-year-old daughter of late Chhattisgarh BJP leader Bheema Mandavi allegedly committed suicide in Dehradun, her family said here on Tuesday.

Bheema Mandavi himself had died in a blast carried out by Naxalites in 2019.

Deepa Mandavi, who was doing a physiotherapy course in the Uttarakhand capital, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her paying guest accommodation in Karanpur area of Dehradun on January 26, a family member said.

Tragically, one of her sisters had allegedly committed suicide by jumping from a building in Raipur in 2013.

Deepa was a third-year student of physiotherapy course at a private institute in Dehradun. She was staying with some friends in a rented room, but a week ago shifted to a PG accommodation, her relative said.

According to police, no suicide note was found at the spot though prima facie the incident seemed to be a suicide.

Deepa’s mother Ojasvi Mandavi, a member of the Chhattisgarh State Women Commission, went to Dehradun with other family members after being informed about the incident. Deepa’s body was brought to Gadapal village in Dantewada where the last rites were performed on Tuesday.

Deepa had recently visited her home.

On April 9, 2019, then BJP MLA Bheema Mandavi was killed in a blast carried out by Naxalites in Dantewada district.

According to family sources, Bheema Mandavi married Ojasvi after the death of his first wife in a road accident. He had three daughters — including Deepa and her sister who died in 2013 — and a son.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief over Deepa Mandavi’s death.

“The news of the sudden death of Deepa Mandavi, daughter of former Dantewada MLA late Bhima Mandavi ji and State Women Commission member Ojasvi Mandavi ji is extremely sad. I spoke to Ojasvi ji on the phone and expressed my condolences on this tragic incident. I pray to God to rest in peace the departed soul and provide strength to the bereaved family,” Sai wrote on X.

A woman died of a heart attack in Gwalior, unable to bear the trauma caused by her 33-year-old engineering graduate son committing suicide, police said on Sunday.

The son who died, Manish Rajput, was stressed as he failed to get a government job despite appearing for related exams, his brother claimed.

A police official said Manish allegedly consumed a poisonous substance on Saturday night under the Gwalior police station limits.

“A hospital informed on Sunday morning that Manish Rajput has died. When his mother, Radha Rajput, was told about her son’s death, she suffered a heart attack and died,” Gwalior police station in-charge Asif Mirza said, adding that a case was registered.

Manish’s brother Anil Rajput said he was at a marriage ceremony on Saturday night when he received a call from his father about his younger brother consuming a poisonous substance.

“When I reached home, I found Manish’s room locked from inside. I managed to enter the room from our neighbour’s home and found Manish lying unconscious,” he said.

When my mother was told about Manish’s death, she could not bear the shock and died, he said.

Anil Rajput said Manish had been unsuccessfully trying for several years to crack competitive examinations to get a government job, which led him to take the extreme step.

A devastated mother has spoken out about the tragic death of her 12-year-old daughter, who died by suicide on December 29 after being relentlessly cyberbullied. Adiel Boyd, from Australia, had been the target of ongoing online harassment, which her mother, Victoria, believes played a major role in her daughter’s heartbreaking decision.

Ms Adiel, a bright and talented student at Aitkenvale State School, was the youngest of four children. Described as a “remarkable little girl” by her mother, Ms Adiel excelled academically and musically. She played several instruments and spoke three languages. Victoria Boyd described her daughter as “close to perfection,” saying how her warmth and intelligence left an impact on everyone she met. However, behind her accomplishments and loving nature, Ms Adiel was struggling with the devastating effects of online bullying.

Victoria Boyd talked about her deep concern over the dangers of social media, a space where parents often struggle to intervene. “Children are lost in social media, it’s the most dangerous tool for a parent,” she said, acknowledging how difficult it was to monitor Ms Adiel’s online interactions.

The bullying, which also occurred on school grounds, centered around jealousy and cruelty, said her mother. Victoria Boyd shared that the pre-teen was bullied by her friends for being “too beautiful” and that the harassment became overwhelming. “She just couldn’t comprehend,” Victoria Boyd added.

Ms Adiel’s older sister, Tameka, had started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and support the grieving family. The campaign has already raised over $13,286 (Rs 11.3 lakh), and Tameka described her sister as someone who “left a birthmark on everybody that she knew in her 12 short years of life.”

Last year, a 10-year-old boy died by suicide in Indiana, US, after enduring persistent bullying at school. His family revealed that the bullying had started with mockery over his glasses and teeth and had escalated to physical abuse, including being beaten up on the school bus and having his glasses broken. The bullying had continued online, with threatening texts. Despite the family reporting the harassment to the school multiple times, the situation had not improved. The boy’s parents believed the bullying, particularly an incident in a school bathroom, had led to his tragic decision.

A man was allegedly found dead at his residence in Delhi on Tuesday evening, with the cops suspecting it as a death by suicide. According to the police, Puneet Khurana, co-founder of a famous cafe in Delhi, was found hanging in his room in Model Town’s Kalyan Vihar area.

Khurana and his wife, Manika Jagdish Pahwa, were in the middle of getting a divorce. The duo, who owned Woodbox Cafe in the national capital, were allegedly engaged in a dispute over the business, officials said.

According to Khurana’s family, he was ‘upset’ with his wife.

The two got married in 2016, officials said.

In a disturbing 16-minute audio accessed by NDTV, Khurana and his wife can be heard fighting over the business property. “We are getting a divorce but I am still a business partner…you need to clear my dues,” Khurana’s wife said on the call.

The police have recovered Khurana’s phone and called his wife for questioning.

The case drew parallels to the recent Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash’s suicide case. The 34-year-old deputy general manager of a private firm, died by suicide in December. He left behind a 24-page suicide note, accusing his wife and her relatives of harassment. According to the victim, his wife and her family had filed a slew of false cases against him.

“The more I work hard and become better at my work, the more l and my family will be harassed and extorted and the whole legal system will encourage and help my harassers… Now, with me gone, there won’t be any money and there won’t be any reason to harass my old parents and my brother. I may have destroyed my body but it has saved everything I believe in,” he wrote.

A few days later, Subhash’s wife Nikita Singhania, and her mother and brother were arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody.

Japanese authorities’ decision to prosecute a 17-year-old girl who died by suicide, resulting in another woman’s death, has sparked widespread controversy. The tragic accident happened on August 31 at at the NEWoMan shopping complex above Yokohama Station. According to the South China Morning Post, a teenage girl from Chiba Prefecture climbed over a 2.5-meter glass barrier on the 12th floor and jumped from the west side of the building. She landed on 32-year-old Chikako Chiba, who was walking with friends. Both were rushed to a local hospital, where the teenage girl was pronounced dead within an hour. Chiba also died of her injuries later that evening.

An initial investigation suggested that the student died by suicide, although the motive was unclear. Yokohama police submitted the case to prosecutors, recommending that an indictment be recorded. The police argued that the 17-year-old girl was of an age where she could reasonably understand that her actions might cause harm to others. As a result, the dead teenager has been charged with “gross negligence resulting in death”, according to state broadcaster NHK.

The decision has been widely debated on social media. Many said that pursuing charges against the dead teenager is unnecessary and a misallocation of resources, as it serves no practical purpose. However, legal experts suggest that although the girl cannot be held legally accountable for the charge of gross negligence resulting in death, pursuing prosecution could have implications for potential civil claims filed by the victim’s family. Additionally, it may serve as a deterrent to others, cautioning against actions that endanger innocent lives during suicide attempts.

One user wrote, “Prosecuting a dead girl is peak government ridiculousness – bureaucrats so obsessed with following their rigid, outdated rules that they’ve completely lost touch with common sense and human decency.”

Another commented, “This is just another way to punish the 17-year-old’s parents and family. It was a terrible accident and, let’s be honest, this makes no sense.” A third said, “It appears as though they are trying to discourage the behaviour in a country known for a high suicide rate.”

A couple, who ran a YouTube channel, was found dead at their residence in Kerala’s Parassala town on Sunday, with the police suspecting it as a case of death by suicide. The incident came to light after their neighbours, who noticed an unusual absence, alerted the police.

According to the Parassala police, Selvaraj (45) was found hanging, while his wife, 40-year-old Priya’s body was found on the bed.

As per initial probe, the deaths may have occurred two days ago. 

The police are investigating the case.

The couple, identified as Selvaraj (45), and his wife Priya (40), ran a YouTube channel called ‘Sellu Family’. Their channel has around 18,000 subscribers.They had posted over 1,400 videos.

The couple’s last video – posted on Friday night – was a 55-second compilation of their photos.

An Indian Army Captain died by suicide after her husband and Indian Air Force Flight Lieutenant’s death in Agra.

Renu Tanwar, was found hanging inside a room at Delhi’s Army Cantonment officer’s guest house on Tuesday. The suicide note found in the guest house mentioned her will to be “cremated hand-in-hand” with her husband Deendayal Deep.

Delhi Police said the suicide likely occurred on the intervening night of October 14 and 15.

Deep, a native of Bihar, was posted at Agra’s Air Force Station.

Harassed by the bank officials and other people owing a debt of Rs 60 lakh, three members of a family, including a girl aged seven committed suicide in Bikaner on Tuesday.

Inspector General Om Prakash Paswan said that three of a family including Rahul Maru, his wife Ruchi and their daughter (7), who lived in Jai Narayan Vyas Colony, were found dead in the room on Tuesday.

“The condition of Rahul’s son (14) is critical and was admitted to PBM Hospital. The bodies of all three have been kept in the mortuary. The reason quoted for suicide in the note is debt and harassment of banks and other people,” said IG Paswan.

He said that the son informed the police that his father gave the family members some medicine at 10 pm on Monday.

“Papa gave medicine to everyone at 10 pm on Monday night. I also took this medicine but I vomited while studying at night. Then I fell asleep. When I woke up at 10 am, my mother, father and sister were lying on the bed. Blood was coming out of their mouths,” said the boy.

He said that he called his aunt and uncle. “Aunt came first then came my uncle. Landlord Abhishek also lives nearby. Neighbours also came and then we informed the police,” he added.

Rahul used to run a wholesale medical shop while his wife Ruchi had a brain haemorrhage. He had taken a loan of about Rs 60 lakh due to his wife’s illness. He had also sold his house, car and other belongings to repay the loan but still could not pay it fully.

Reportedly, creditors were harassing him. After selling his house, Rahul was living in a rented house in Jai Narayan Vyas Colony.
