Former pacer Stuart Broad said England’s inexperienced bowling attack may have challenges after star fast bowler James Anderson’s retirement. England veteran pacer Anderson announced his decision to retire from Tests after the first match against West Indies at Lord’s in July. Anderson, the highest wicket-taker among pace bowlers in Test cricket, will play his final red-ball game for England in July. Anderson has stated that the series opener against the West Indies at Lord’s on July 10-14 will be his 188th and last Test match for England after a career spanning over two decades.

Matthew Potts, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, and Gus Atkinson are all potential alternatives, but Broad is concerned about Ben Stokes’ bowling options moving ahead.

While Broad believes the future may be a baptism of fire for England bowlers, he does acknowledge that talent is present and waiting for opportunities.

“I think exposure for some bowlers now is really important, because there’s talent out there. You’ve got the likes of Matthew Potts who has done well in Test cricket and on a Lions tour, Gus Atkinson has loads of great attributes, Josh Tongue who struggled a bit with injuries over the winter but bowled great against Ireland and Australia,” Broad said as quoted by Sky Sports.

“Brydon Carse up at Durham has shown some good potential and has attributes to play Test match cricket – quick, tall and can certainly bat as well. Jamie Overton has struggled with injuries but shown promise as well,” he added.

“England could easily go into a Test match this summer with a very, very inexperienced bowling group. If you don’t play a (Chris) Woakes, Mark Wood has a rest and there’s no Jimmy Anderson, you could have three seamers and a spinner out there potentially with 20 caps between them. That’s quite scary as a Test captain I would have thought. We don’t know how much (Ben) Stokes’ going to bowl – we hope he does,” he added.

At 41, Anderson has played Test cricket for over two decades to become one of the greatest bowlers the format has seen. He made his Test debut at Lord’s in 2003 and has taken 700 wickets in 187 Tests.

Having neither of the two available to lead the line with the red ball in the future might cause issues, and Broad reaffirmed his concern about the void Anderson’s departure will create.

“There’s going to certainly be a huge hole left by Jimmy Anderson that someone is going to have to step into. And not just by swinging the new ball. But by communicating, by keeping calm if the boundaries are leaking, by tactically being aware of what field works at certain grounds, pitches and times of Test matches. Ultimately, you don’t learn that unless you’re thrown in,” he added.

Broad describes his major trait as the desire to grow and adapt his own game.

“My thing was always continuous improvement. Jimmy’s has always been that as well, and we drove each other forward a lot with that mindset. Working on different things in the nets, run-ups – I think Jimmy worked on a new run-up at 41 – I certainly changed mine in 2019 and I was 33/34. We always had that mindset you had to keep improving,” he added.

“That was probably why he played that much. If we didn’t have that mindset, we might have played 20 Tests and then been found out,” he added.

England host West Indies in a three-match ICC World Test Championship series in July, starting with the first Test at Lord’s.

IPL 2024: On Rohit Sharma’s Golden Duck vs Rajasthan Royals, Ex-England Star’s ‘Philosophical’ Verdict https://artifex.news/ipl-2024-on-rohit-sharmas-golden-duck-vs-rajasthan-royals-ex-england-stars-philosophical-verdict-5360359/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 07:01:29 +0000 https://artifex.news/ipl-2024-on-rohit-sharmas-golden-duck-vs-rajasthan-royals-ex-england-stars-philosophical-verdict-5360359/ Read More “IPL 2024: On Rohit Sharma’s Golden Duck vs Rajasthan Royals, Ex-England Star’s ‘Philosophical’ Verdict” »

Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a golden duck as Mumbai Indians slumped to their third consecutive defeat in IPL 2024 against Rajasthan Royals on Monday. Rohit fell victim to Trent Boult on the fifth ball of the MI innings as he ended up playing away from his body and Sanju Samson took a sharp catch behind the stumps to complete the dismissal. Former England cricket team fast bowler Stuart Broad analysed the dismissal on Star Sports and said that it was a proper setup from RR and their celebration showed how much planning went behind the wicket. He also pointed out that there was not much Rohit could have done about it before adding that the dismissal may result in the batter having ‘philosophical’ thoughts.

“That was just fantastic bowling. That was just a beautiful plan from Rajasthan Royals. I think you could tell with the celebration of the whole group that that was a setup. They thought that Rohit would be thinking that Boult was going to swing the ball back and you can see from the seam release that it’s wobbling. That means it’s a deliberate move across the right-handed batter with the slip in place and actually a fantastic catch as well. Low down to the right are always difficult for a wicketkeeper.”

“I think Rohit would probably be sitting in the changing room now, quite philosophical, like really, I can’t do a huge amount about that. It’s not like he’s played a terrible shot. I think it was fantastic bowling.”

Rohit Sharma on Monday equalled the unwanted record for most ducks in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

In the first over of the match between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals at Wankhede Stadium, Rohit edged one to wicketkeeper Sanju Samson in Trent Boult’s over, his 17th duck in IPL history, levelling the dubious record held by Dinesh Karthik.

Rohit’s record of 17 ducks is followed by Glenn Maxwell, Piyush Chawla, Mandeep Singh and Sunil Narine, who all got out on ducks 15 times.

Coming to the match, relentless spells from Trent Boult, Nandre Burger and Yuzvendra Chahal ripped apart Mumbai Indians’ (MI) batting order, helping Rajasthan Royals (RR) restrict MI to 125/9 in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 here at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.

Chahal and Boult bowled their heart out against Mumbai, bagging three wickets each, while Nandre Burger returned with two scalps. Captain Hardik Pandya scored the highest for the MI with 34 off 21 deliveries while Tilak Varma played a crucial knock of 32 runs in 29 balls.

Rajasthan Royals bowlers absolutely bossed Mumbai batters as Pandya-led Mumbai’s homecoming did not go according to their plan so far as the team posted their lowest total in their IPL.

The IPL 2024’s start for Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been placid to say the least. The side have lost two out of three games and the first team this edition to not lose a match at home. The RCB side were bolstered by an unbeaten 83 from Kohli as they scored 182/6. But KKR reached the target with more than three overs to spare. Speaking on Star Sports, former England cricketer Stuart Broad spoke on the inadequacies of the RCB bowling line up. “In times like that you want to heap praise on KKR, you know six visits in a row they’ve taken a victory in Bengaluru. You have to look at the RCB bowling too, just watch KKR bowl cutters and slower balls and into the pitch, very difficult to one of the best batters ever, Virat Kohli, who wasn’t able to time the ball consistently throughout,” he said.

“And then they come on and bowl with a lot of pace on, which disappeared to the boundary, they bowled short and were predictable, but that’s their issue RCB, I think their batting for many years has been strong and they’ve got star power there but then their bowling unit doesn’t seem to be able to stand up and win them games. It looks like a slightly unbalanced team and in my personal opinion they’ve got their overseas players spot on and sometimes it takes a humbling loss like that at home to sharpen your focus and make you realise how you should be playing.”

Broad spoke on the bad tactics deployed by the RCB bowlers. “It was in the length that he hit and RCB should have followed that, they dropped much shorter or were in the slot with their slow balls. I think what Andre Russell did so well, it wasn’t necessarily back of the hand stuff, it was just cutters, going into the top of the stumps which the batters weren’t able to adjust to. And when you’re bowling cutters, if you drop too short or too full, the batters can adjust, but if you’re in the length that they can’t quite get to, that’s when it’s difficult and RCB just didn’t get their lengths right. Too short, too full with the slower balls and cutters and KKR punished them.”

Broad added: “With the team batting first, normally you’d expect to learn so much from the team that has bowled first and take all that information and deliver that in the second innings. So they had all the information of what KKR did so brilliantly, but they didn’t manage to put that into practise and deliver that skill. I think RCBs coaching staff and captain will be really disappointed with the execution of they could have done.”

As the ODI World Cup 2023 gets underway, England would be keen to defend their title, having won it with the narrowest of margins in 2019. Though not a part of England’s World Cup squad, Stuart Broad has faith in the England team’s ability to go the distance in the tournament. However, the team he arguably fears the most is that or Rohit Sharma‘s Indian side. Broad admitted that if India put their A-game on the table, it’s going to be very tough to stop them.

“If England manage to retain their World Cup title, it will be a phenomenal effort but my overriding feeling is that if India play their perfect tournament, they are going to be very difficult to stop. Jos Buttler certainly has the team to challenge, one with the ability to post high totals, but I just think India, as hosts and the top-ranked ODI side, will be a hugely difficult proposition,” Broad wrote in a column on Daily Mail.

“Contrast to England. Without sounding like I am giving them excuses, they have got a pretty tough draw, to be honest. They do not play two games in the same location, instead travelling from city to city. Others have the luxury of being able to book in somewhere for a week and play two games. They do not,” the former England pacer further said.

Broad also gave his predictions for the semi-finalists. He feels Pakistan and England would be there alongside India. For the 4th team, Brod went in favour of New Zealand over Australia.

“As for the other semi-finalists? Pakistan will be a threat. Their bowling is full of natural wicket-takers and is their huge strength. In players like Babar Azam they have some high quality batters but Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi can blow opponents away,” the 37-year-old further said.

“I’d then probably say New Zealand over Australia. Why? Because, New Zealand are the ultimate tournament team. Put their team sheets next to each other and you’d always lean towards the Aussies with Steve Smith, David Warner, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, but New Zealand just find a way,” Broad concluded.
