Skipper Chamari Athapaththu’s diligent fifty propelled Sri Lanka to a thrilling three-wicket win over Pakistan in the second semifinal of the women’s Asia Cup in Dambulla on Friday, setting up the title clash against India. In the first semifinal earlier, defending champions India had beaten Bangladesh by 10 wickets. The final will be played on Sunday. Athapaththu, who is the highest run-getter in the event with 223 runs, single-handedly guided the Lankans close to the target of 141, making a well-paced 63 off 48 balls (9×4, 1×6).

Her fifty and Anushka Sanjeevani’s unbeaten 24 (22b, 1×4, 1×6) helped Lanka to reach 141 for 7 in 19.5 overs.

Kalisha Dilhari (17, 18 balls) helped Athapaththu milk 61 runs for the third wicket that gave Lanka a firm hold on the match.

Pakistan stayed in the fight through a brilliant spell by experienced left-arm spinner Sadia Iqbal (4/16 off 4 overs) but she did not have much support from the other end as the hosts stumbled across the line.

Earlier, Pakistan relied on handy knocks by Muneeba Ali (37), Gull Feroza (25), skipper Nida Dar (23) and Fatima Sana (23 not out) to make 140 for four.

All of them got the starts but none of them converted it into a bigger score as Pakistan ended up with what eventually proved to be a total that was slightly below par.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh produced superlative performances to secure victories over Malaysia and Thailand in group B and inch closer to the semifinal berth at the Women’s Asia Cup T20 tournament in Dambulla on Monday. While hosts Sri Lanka thrashed Malaysia by a massive 114 runs, Bangladesh outwitted Thailand by seven wickets later in the day. With four points each, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh occupy the top two spots. Chamari Athapaththu was the architect of Sri Lanka’s dominating win as she smashed a 69-ball 119 not out, studded with 14 boundaries and seven sixes to single-handedly power the team to a daunting 184 for 4 after opting to bat.

Harshitha Madavi (26) and Anushka Sanjeewani (31) also chipped in with useful contributions.

The bowlers then joined the party as Shashini Gimhani (3/9), Kawya Kavindi (2/7) and Kavisha Dilhari (2/4) produced incredible figures to bundle Malaysia out for just 40 in 19.5 overs.

Inoshi Priyadharshani (1/10), Sachini Nisansala (1/4) and Ama Kanchana (1/5) also snapped a wicket each.

For Malaysia, only Elsa Hunter could reach double-digit figures, making 10 in 11 balls. Aina Najwa scored 9 after facing 43 balls, which was the reason that Malaysia could last that many overs.

In the second match of the day, Thailand cut a sorry figure as they could manage just 96 for 9 in their stipulated 20 overs, courtesy a 41-ball 40 by opener Nattaya Boochatham after deciding to take first strike.

Rabeya Khan was the most successful bowler as she returned with four wickets for 14 runs, while Sabikun Nahar (2/28) and Ritu Moni (2/10) took two wickets each to break the back of their opponents.

Chasing 97 for a win, Murshida Khatun made 50 off 55 balls as Bangladesh romped home, scoring 100 for 3 in 17.3 overs.

Dilara Akter (17) was run out in the fifth over but Khatun and Ishma Tanjim (16) shared 60 runs to steady the chase.

Sri Lanka women’s team defeated Scotland by 68 runs in the summit clash of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2024. Asked to bat first, Sri Lanka posted a total of 169/5 in 20 overs with skipper Chamari Athapaththu smashing 102 runs off just 63 balls. Later, Sri Lanka restricted Scotland to 101/7 with Udeshika Prabodhani registering a three-wicket haul. Athapaththu, whose knock played a huge role in Sri Lanka’s victory, also gave a hilarious moment when she survived a close dismissal.

During the 17th over of Sri Lanka’s innings, Athapaththu got played by the delivery from Abtaha Maqsood. The Sri Lankan skipper got an inside edge which saw the ball going back and touching the stumps. However, the bails failed to dislodge and Athapaththu survived.

Seeing such a close call, Scotland stand-in skipper and wicketkeeper Sarah Bryce gave a disappointing reaction.

However, this was not the only instance in the match where the fortune favoured Athapaththu. On the next delivery of the same over, Athapaththu went for a big hit but the fielder in the deep dropped a catch and gave the Sri Lankan another life.

Chasing 170 to win, Saskia Horley and Megan McColl began with positive intent, hitting three boundaries in as many overs. However, Horley fell in the third over itself trying to steal a quick single after deflecting the ball towards Nilakshika Silva in the mid-off region.

Her partner, McColl, was trapped leg before by Udeshika Prabodhani in the next over. Scotland’s troubles compounded when skipper Sarah Bryce was bowled two balls later.

Scotland had added six more runs before Sugandika Kumari removed Darcey Carter (3) to leave their chase in disarray at 23/4. After the first powerplay, Priyanaz Chatterji took the initiative by hitting a flurry of boundaries.

Despite this, Scotland were at 48/4 at the halfway stage, needing over 12 runs per over to win the final. Chatterji’s brisk 30 came to an end when she was cleaned up by Inoshi Priyadarshini in the 13th over.

Sri Lanka’s win seemed a mere formality thereafter with Prabodhani picking up another wicket to finish as Sri Lanka’s top performer with the ball.

By virtue of being finalists in the tournament, both sides had already qualified for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in Bangladesh.

With the win, Sri Lanka will join Australia, New Zealand, India and Pakistan in Group A of the Women’s T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, Scotland join hosts Bangladesh, England, South Africa and West Indies.

The Indian women’s cricket team made history in the Asian Games 2023 on Monday as Harmapreet Kaur & Co. defeated Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the final. In what was the Indian cricket team’s first-ever participation in the Asian Games’ cricketing events, the women’s team claimed the top podium spot after producing a fine all-round effort. Though cricket has been a part of the Asian Games in 2010 and 2014, neither the men’s nor the women’s Indian team had participated in the event.

Batting first, Harmanpreet’s girls put 116 runs on the board for the loss of 7 wickets. With the ball, India put a stunning display on the 22-yard strip, restricting Sri Lanka to just 87/8. Titas Sadhu was the pick of the bowlers for India, bagging 3 wickets for just 6 runs in 4 overs.

As for the match, the Indian team elected to bat first after winning the toss, that marked the return of Harmanpreet Kaur after 2-match suspension. After the early dismissal of Shafali Verma, opener Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues rebuilt the innings.

Inoka Ranaweera gave SL the much-needed breakthrough, getting rid of Smriti for 46 off 45 balls with four boundaries and a six. India was 89/2 in 14.5 overs and the 73-run stand between Mandhana-Rodrigues was over.

That wicket caused a collapse in the Indian innings as except for Rodrigues, who scored 42 in 40 balls with five fours, no other batter could stand tall against the Lankan side. India ended their innings at 116/7 in 20 overs.

Kumari (2/30), Ranaweera (2/21) and Udeshika Prabodhani (2/16) were among the wickets for Sri Lanka.

In the chase of 117 runs, Sri Lanka was troubled by medium-pacer Titas Sandhu, who dismissed the top order consisting of skipper Chamari Athapaththu (12), Anushka Sanjeewani (1) and Vishmi Gunaratne (0), reducing SL to 14/3 in 4.2 overs.

Hasini Perera and Nilakshi de Silva had started to rebuild the Lankan innings, helping them cross the 50-run mark in 9.3 overs. But Rajeshwari Gayakwad turned the tide in India’s favour by removing Hasini for 25 off 22 balls, with four boundaries and a six. SL was 50/4 in 9.5 overs.

From then on, the road to gold got tougher for SL, as spinners Deepti Sharma and Devika Vaidya restricted the run flow. But Nilakshi and Oshadi Ranasinghe fought back with some boundaries, leaving SL with 43 to get in the final five overs.

But Pooja Vastrakar, India’s star in the semifinal with the ball, removed Nilakshi for 23 off 34 balls, ending a fighting 28-run partnership. SL was 78/5 in 16.1 overs.

Deepti also removed Ranasinghe, who played a fighting knock of 19 in 26 balls. SL was 86/6 in 17.4 overs.

Sri Lanka was left to make 30 in the final two overs but they fell 19 runs short of India’s total.

Nat Sciver-Brunt smashed a record-breaking century on her 100th one-day international appearance as England thrashed Sri Lanka on Thursday. Deputising for ill captain Heather Knight, Sciver-Brunt hit England’s fastest women’s ODI century in just 66 balls. After eclipsing the previous best by Charlotte Edwards off 70 balls against New Zealand in 2012, Sciver-Brunt went on to reach 120 from 74 deliveries.

Her record would only have stood for a couple of minutes if Maia Bouchier had hit her 65th ball for six but she was lbw for 95, ending a boundary-laden 193-run stand in 121 deliveries with Sciver-Brunt.

Their efforts underpinned England’s score of 273-8 in a contest reduced to 31 overs each because of a rain-delayed start at Grace Road.

Charlie Dean took five wickets as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 112, giving England a 161-run victory and a 2-0 series success.

Sri Lankan pace legend Lasith Malinga on Thursday congratulated the national senior women’s team for clinching a historic series win in England. Sri Lanka women’s team created history on Wednesday by recording their first-ever series triumph over England in any format. The historic 2-1 series triumph came courtesy of a dominant seven-wicket victory over Heather Knight’s side in the third T20I in Derby. In his tweet, Malinga lauded the character shown by the team led by Chamari Athapaththu.

“Congratulations to SL Women’s Cricket team for the historic series win against England Doing so in their own backyard makes it even more special The character Chamari & her team have shown throughout the past year is promising and it’ll do wonders for the Women’s game in SL,” tweeted Malinga.

Coming to the match, put to bat first, England was bundled out for just 116 runs in 19 overs, with Maia Bouchier (23), Danielle Gibson (21) and wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones (20) helping England save face.

Seven of England’s wickets fell to spin bowlers, which included SL skipper Chamari Athapaththu, who delivered an all-round masterclass with a 28-ball 44 and a spell of 3/21. Kavisha Dilhari, Udeshika Prabodhani ended with figures of 2/16 each.

This performance raised alarm over England’s inability to play spin as they went down to Sri Lanka in the same fashion in the second T20I.

SL chased down the total without much issues as Athapaththu (44 in 28 balls, five fours and two sixes) and Harshitha Samarawickrama (26 in 28 balls, one four) guided the chase.
