“Don’t Think Gautam Gambhir Has A Natural Captain”: Ex New Zealand Star’s Verdict On Suryakumar Yadav

Former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris believes that Suryakumar Yadav is only a temporary captaincy option for India, with Gautam Gambhir ideally hoping to build Shubman Gill as the nation’s future long-term captain. Suryakumar Yadav – fondly known as SKY – was appointed India’s T20I captain by Gambhir after the retirement of Rohit Sharma from the shortest format. Gill was appointed vice-captain in both the T20Is and ODIs for the Sri Lanka tour, prompting Styris to believe that more long-term plans are in play.

“I think he’s a short-term option. I don’t think Gambhir has a natural captain amongst the players that he has right now,” said Styris, speaking to India Today.

“He’s buying himself time as to who will be the next long-term captain,” continued Styris.

“You know, someone like Gill I think could do the job for 10 years for India, but he’s not quite ready right now, so I think it was a really smart decision to bring in someone with a bit more experience,” Styris added.

SKY is 33 years old, while Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma is 37. Therefore, developing a long-term captain for the future appears to be a sensible move by Gambhir.

Gill captained India for the first time during the post-T20 World Cup tour to Zimbabwe, as India won the five-match series 4-1. Earlier in the year, Gill had captained IPL franchise Gujarat Titans to a disappointing 8th-place finish.

Styris mentioned that despite the long term vision, SKY could remain India’s T20I captain till the next T20 World Cup in 2026.

“If he (SKY) does a decent enough job, then he might be the captain at the next T20 World Cup. And then after that, you can look at Gill or any of the other potential options around. But yeah, I think it’s a really clever decision,” said Styris.

India’s three-match T20I tour of Sri Lanka gets underway on Saturday, July 27.

Sanath Jayasuriya Disciplines Sri Lanka Cricketers Ahead Of T20I Series Against India

Ahead of the white-ball home series against India, newly appointed interim head coach Sanath Jayasuriya calls for discipline within the Sri Lankan team, including enforcing proper haircuts and the removal of piercings. Addressing the media, former skipper Jayasuirya admitted instilling discipline in current players is important, specially to maintain cricket as “the gentlemen’s game”. “We did basic disciplining. We are expecting discipline in general, and I am only an interim coach during my tenure. I want that discipline,” said Jayasuriya, who has been appointed as a temporary coach for the series against India and Sri Lanka’s tour of England in September.

“Our cricket-loving public love these cricketers, and they are watching them and there are young cricketers who are looking up to senior cricketers. They like to learn from them. If they do well it would help the younger generation of cricketers as well. It was on this backdrop we introduced these changes. We want to maintain cricket as the gentlemen’s game,” he added.

Backing Jayasuriya’s attempt to discipline the young cricketers, country’s Sports Minister Harin Fernando, earlier stressed the need for modesty and discipline among cricketers representing the country and argued that humble behavior could mitigate most of the criticism cricketers face after match losses.

“If the team had been more humble and their attitudes had shifted, the people of Sri Lanka would not have been so critical of match losses. People have a deep love for cricket” the Sports Minister had said.

Jayasuriya also stressed that Sri Lanka should get the best advantage from the absence of three experienced players; Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and allrounder Ravindra Jadeja, who have announced their retirement from the shorter format after T20 World Cup last month.

“They are not in the team, which is a loss to the Indian team, and we should take maximum advantage of it ,” he said. “Rohit, Virat and Jadeja are the best players in the world. With their talent, the cricket they played, we all know where they stand,” Jayasuirya said.

The three T20Is will be played on July 27, 28 and 30 at Pallekele International Stadium followed by three ODIs, starting from August 2 in Colombo.

Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa has said that Hardik Pandya should not feel hard done by for not being given a captaincy role for Team India, and should instead look at the bigger picture. Uthappa stated that, knowing Hardik personally, the latter would also think that the decision has been taken keeping the best for Hardik in mind. After the appointment of new coach Gautam Gambhir, Pandya was retained in no leadership roles in the white-ball formats, with his fitness and availability being the major reason behind it, according to chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Uthappa said that not having the burden of captaincy would ensure Hardik a longer international career.

“If I am 34 or 35 years old, and I am someone who has been injury-prone throughout my career, and a certain responsibility has been taken away from me with the mindset of extending my career, it has given me the best chance of offering my service to my country, for as long as possible. Keeping that in mind, I would actually say, this is the best thing for me,” added Uthappa.

“Knowing Hardik Pandya on a certain level personally, I would say he’ll be someone saying ‘fine, their perspective is also right’. They want a player of my quality and calibre to serve the country for as long as possible, I would love to do that as well,” said Uthappa.

“If you ask me between the two what would I pick, I would say representing my country and winning as many world cup championships, irrespective of the fact whether I am the captain or just a player,” continued Uthappa.

Pandya is in India’s squad for both the T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka.

The Indian men’s cricket team, under new head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, arrived in Pallekele via Colombo to a warm welcome, with the recently-crowned T20 world champions playfully mingling with fans and giving them some precious moments. The 15-member India team along with the support staff had left Mumbai on Monday after a pre-departure press conference addressed by Gambhir, who took over Rahul Dravid as the national coach, and BCCI’s chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar. They arrived the same same day in Pallekele after a short layover in Colombo.

India will play a three-match T20I series against the home side, who are yet to announce their squad.

The Suryakumar-led side will play the first of the three T20Is on July 27, followed by matches on July 28 and 30.

The team will then travel to Colombo to play three One-day Internationals scheduled for August 2, 4 and 7.

“Mumbai to Pallekele via Colombo. TeamIndia have reached Sri Lanka,” wrote BCCI on ‘X’ with a short video showing the players enjoying their air and road journey to the fullest.

The team, comprising of several youngsters with Shubman Gill as the vice-captain, is without stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, who announced retirement from T20Is following India’s title triumph in the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

Suryakumar was last week appointed the new T20 captain ahead of all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who previous led the side, because of his fitness and the feedback the team management got from the dressing room.

The team has a fair sprinkling of experience as apart from Suryakumar and Gill, it also has Sanju Samson, Pandya and pacers Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh among others.

Swashbuckling batter Suryakumar Yadav on Friday expressed his delight at being appointed captain of the Indian T20 side for the tour of Sri Lanka, saying the last few weeks have been “nothing short of a dream”. In a heartfelt post, Suryakumar thanked everyone for keeping faith in him and for receiving plenty of support in recent times. The 33-year-old Suryakumar succeeded Rohit Sharma as India’s captain in the shortest format ahead of flamboyant all-rounder Hardik Pandya. “Thank you so much for outpouring love, support and best wishes from you. Last few weeks have been nothing short of a dream and I am truly grateful,” Suryakumar wrote on Instagram.

“Playing for the country is the most special feeling that I will never be able to describe in words. This new role brings with it, a lot of responsibility, excitement and enthusiasm. I hope to keep receiving your support and blessings. All fame reaches God, God is great,” Suryakumar added.

Suryakumar was part of the team that triumphed in the T20 World Cup last month and signed off by pulling off an extraordinary catch in the deep off the bowling of Pandya to send back the dangerous David Miller who looked on course to take South Africa past India’s target in the title clash at Barbados.

His deputy in Sri Lanka will be Shubman Gill, who will be donning the vice-captain’s hat.
