Singer Chinmayi Sripaada has reacted to the alleged gang-rape of a Spanish tourist in Jharkhand’s Dumka district and said that all Indians should be “ashamed” by the incident. 

The woman from Spain was allegedly gang-raped at Kurumahat in the Hansdiha police station area last Friday when she was spending the night in a makeshift tent along with her husband. The couple had reached Dumka from Bangladesh on two motorcycles and was en route to Bihar and then Nepal.

Taking to her official X account, Ms Sripaada said, “If all Indians can be proud when ‘few’ Indians win an Olympic medal, all Indians can also be ashamed when ‘few’ men rape.”

Actors Dulquer Salmaan and Richa Chadha were also among those who expressed shock over the alleged gang-rape and demanded that perpetrators be brought to justice.

Mr Salmaan said he was “crushed” to hear the news.

“You both recently visited Kottayam where close friends hosted you for a meal. This should not happen to anyone anywhere (sic),” the actor wrote on his Instagram Story.

Ms Chadha termed the act “shameful”.

“Indians are treating foreigners like they treat their own women. Shame on our rotten society,” she said.

The police have arrested eight people in connection with the case. 

“Don’t Blame People But Criminals” 

The Spanish woman on Tuesday said that she has no complaints against the people of India as she has safely travelled around 20,000 km across the country.

Speaking to reporters before leaving for Nepal via Bihar along with her husband on their motorcycles, she said she would continue her world tour.

“People of India are nice. I don’t blame the people, but I blame the criminals. People of India have treated me very well, and were very kind to me,” the 28-year-old woman said.

“We chose the place for the night stay because it was calm and beautiful. We thought it would be okay if we lived there alone,” she said.

The woman said that she has been travelling for more than six years.

“We have been in India for the last six months and travelled around 20,000 km. We did not have any problems anywhere. This has happened for the first time,” she said.

“I have good memories from India,” she added.

Dumka (Jharkhand):

Jharkhand Police has handed over a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs to the husband of a Spanish woman who was allegedly gang-raped in Dumka on Friday.

According to the police, the Spanish woman was gang-raped in Hansdiha police station limits when she was en route to Nepal from West Bengal.

“We did a fast investigation and from the side of district administration, we are providing all the help to them (rape survivor and husband). Under the victim compensation scheme, we have given them Rs 10 lakh. We will try for a speedy trial and conviction of the accused,” Anjaneyulu Dodde, Deputy Commissioner, said on Monday.

The woman and her husband were on a bike tour across India and the incident reportedly happened when they were resting inside a tent in a deserted area in Kurmahat village.

The husband of the rape survivor thanked the police for the very “fast investigation”.

According to the police, seven people are involved in the case and three have been arrested.

They were remanded in judicial custody after being produced in a local court on Sunday.

The incident sparked a scathing attack from the BJP against the state government.

“This is a stain on the state. This shows the deteriorating law and order situation in the state and that even foreigners aren’t safe here. The police should act soon, and the government should also take cognizance of it and take strict action against such anarchists. This government has completely failed,” Anant Ojha, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, said on Saturday.

Referring to the incident, Jharkhand Minister Banna Gupta said that the state government is committed to taking strict action against the accused.

Actor Richa Chadha on Saturday strongly reacted to the alleged gang-rape of a Spanish woman in Jharkhand and said it is a “shame on our rotten society”.

A Spanish tourist on a bike tour with her husband was allegedly gang-raped in Jharkhand’s Dumka district on Friday.

“Shameful! Indians are treating foreigners like they treat their own women. Shame on our rotten society,” Ms Chadha wrote about the incident in an Instagram post.

The incident occurred late Friday night in the Hansdiha area of Dumka when the couple stopped at a deserted place to spend the night at a makeshift tent.

They reportedly reached Jharkhand from Bangladesh on a two-wheeler and were en route to Nepal via Bihar. They were also reportedly beaten by the men who allegedly raped the woman.

Three people have been arrested in the case and police have launched a manhunt to catch the remaining accused, a senior official told the news agency PTI.

A special investigation team (SIT) has also been formed to probe the incident, the official said.

“7 Men Raped Me”

The Spanish woman spoke about the horrific incident in an Instagram video message and said that seven men had raped her.  

“Something has happened to us that we would not wish on anyone. Seven men have raped me,” the woman, with bruises all over her face, said in the message.

“They have beaten us and robbed us. Although not many things because what they wanted was to rape me,” she added.

Dumka Civil Surgeon Baccha Prasad Singh told PTI that the woman, aged around 28, and her 64-year-old husband were undergoing treatment at Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital in Dumka where they reached on motorcycles from Saraiyahat Community Health Centre, covering a distance of about 60 km with police escort.

“Both are out of danger and are undergoing treatment at the hospital. The man has sustained minor injuries. The medical examination of the victim will be done by a medical board comprising three gynaecologists, a radiologist, an orthopaedic and a dentist, headed by superintendent of the medical college, Dr Anupuran Purti,” the civil surgeon was quoted as saying by PTI.
