Sean Abbott was seen wiping away tears as family and friends paid tribute to the late Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes on Wednesday to mark the 10-year anniversary of his tragic death after being struck on the neck while batting. Abbott bowled the fatal delivery that struck Hughes during a Sheffield Shield match between New South Wales and South Australia in 2014 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. NSW players consoled Abbott as they stood for an emotional tribute, including observing a minute’s silence, before the start of play on day four of their Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania at the SCG.

Hughes, who played 26 Tests, 25 ODIs and one T20I for Australia, lost his life three days before his 26th birthday.

Players in the Sheffield Shield have been wearing black armbands in matches since Saturday as a tribute to Hughes.

“Today marks the 10-year anniversary of the passing of our treasured son and brother, Phillip Joel Hughes,” the family said in its message.

“Phillip was a loving, humorous and an infectious person to be around.” According to reports in local media, Abbott was consulted in advance about whether he would be comfortable with a match being scheduled on the anniversary of one of the most saddest moments in Australian sports.

The family further said, “He always aimed to make those around him smile and enjoy the little things in life, where his beautiful smile would come to life. He shined bright even in the tough times, which is a testament to who he was as a person, and we loved everything about him.

“He was the light of our lives. Phillip had a profound love for his family and lived his life with respect to everyone around him.

Cricket Australia had planned in advance a series of initiatives to mark the 10th anniversary of Hughes’ death including a tribute before the start of the second Test between India and Australia at the Adelaide Oval scheduled from December 6-10.

“Phillip, the small-town country boy, became an Australian Test, One-Day and Twenty-20 cricketer, where he played on the toughest pitches around the globe, alongside the toughest of cricketers on the world stage, but never forgot where he came from and who helped along the way,” the family said in the message.

“He was a unique individual that took risky and adventurous strides to conquer the dreams he set for himself to become test baggy green number 408.

“He played cricket for all the right reasons and had the ability to take it all in his stride. He loved being a part of a team and representing Australia for the game he loved so deeply.” Cricket Australia, which has produced a special documentary on him, will broadcast it ahead of the second Test between India and Australia, as part of a two-week commemoration programme.

Batting on 63, Hughes collapsed before receiving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and was subsequently taken to Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was placed in an induced coma.

Hughes, however, could not recover from the blow and died on November 27. The left-hander was viewed as one of the promising Australian cricketers as the team went through a transitional phase.

In the Australia-India Adelaide Test that followed his death a decade ago, the southpaw was named as the home team’s 13th player with 63 (the score he was batting at in his last match) seconds of applause observed ahead of the game.

From 52/2 To 53 All Out: Western Australia’s Bizarre Batting Collapse Breaks The Internet https://artifex.news/from-52-2-to-53-all-out-western-australias-bizarre-batting-collapse-breaks-the-internet-6869791/ Fri, 25 Oct 2024 07:19:41 +0000 https://artifex.news/from-52-2-to-53-all-out-western-australias-bizarre-batting-collapse-breaks-the-internet-6869791/ Read More “From 52/2 To 53 All Out: Western Australia’s Bizarre Batting Collapse Breaks The Internet” »

Western Australia lost eight wickets for just one run before being bowled out for 53 in their domestic One-Day Cup match against Tasmania on Friday. The defending champions were 52/2 at one stage, but could only add one run to their innings total, which also came from a wide. As many as six batters were dismissed for a duck, with pacer Lance Morris also unbeaten on nought. For Tasmania, Beau Webster grabbed six wickets, conceding just 17 runs in the process.

Western Australia’s collapsed sparked a meltdown on social media, with fans deeming it as one of the “craziest collapse”.

Here’s how internet reacted:

Western Australia’s 53 is the second-lowest total in the history of the tournament, narrowly bettering the 51 posted by South Australia in Hobart in 2003, also against Tasmania.

Tasmania achieved the below-par target in just 8.3 overs, securing a seven-wicket victory and a vital bonus point.

The likes of Cooper Connolly, Hilton Cartwright, Ashton Agar, Jhye Richardson and Joel Paris all got ducks, while pacer Morris was stranded on nought without facing a ball.

Only two batters got into double figures. Opener D’Arcy Short scored 22 while Cameron Bancroft hit 14.

With the defeat, Western Australia’s bid for a fourth consecutive title is now hanging by a thread.

Tasmania, on the other hand, got their first win of the season.

Meanwhile, Australia captain Pat Cummins returned to action to help New South Wales beat Victoria by 139 runs in Melbourne.

In Brisbane, Queensland made a mockery out of South Australia’s 219-run target, courtesy of Jimmy Peirson‘s ton. They won by nine wickets.

For a nation facing many problems, cricket has often been a uniting factor for people in Afghanistan. And the nation’s historic victory over Australia in the Super 8 stage of 2024 T20 World Cup has created a fanatic frenzy back home. The win – which avenges the defeat from the 2023 ODI World Cup – has put Afghanistan in a great position to qualify for the semi-finals. And the joy among the players was multiplied back home, as several videos went viral, showing streets in Afghanistan packed with thousands of people celebrating the historic win.

Multiple videos showed that transport had come to a standstill. For as far as the eye went, people were on the streets. Loud fireworks went off into the sky almost every second, as people celebrated Afghanistan’s first-ever win over Australia in T20 World Cups.

In another video that was by from Khost province of Afghanistan, people were celebrating the win over Australia with great enthusiasm.

The game has put Afghanistan right in the mix to qualify for their first-ever T20 World Cup semis. With Australia facing an in-form India and Afghanistan facing a downbeat Bangladesh, the race to the semis is now wide open.

The game was also sweet revenge for Afghanistan. Back in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Afghanistan had lost from a winning position. In that game, Australia won after being 90-7, as Glenn Maxwell scored a double century in one of the greatest ODI knocks of all time.

This time around, Maxwell made another half-century [59 (41)], but Afghanistan held on. Gulbadin Naib was the unlikely star with the ball, running through the Australia middle order. Outspoken pacer Naveen-ul-Haq also got three wickets.

As the Afghanistan team bus jammed to bowling coach Dwayne Bravo‘s song “Champion” after the win, the streets of Afghanistan went berserk in elation. A cricket fairytale is being written in the West Indies.

Mitchell Marsh Will Not Bowl In T20 World Cup Opener Against Oman: Australia Coach Andrew McDonald https://artifex.news/mitch-marsh-will-not-bowl-in-t20-wc-opener-against-oman-coach-mcdonald-5785929/ Fri, 31 May 2024 10:00:36 +0000 https://artifex.news/mitch-marsh-will-not-bowl-in-t20-wc-opener-against-oman-coach-mcdonald-5785929/ Read More “Mitchell Marsh Will Not Bowl In T20 World Cup Opener Against Oman: Australia Coach Andrew McDonald” »

Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh will not bowl in their T20 World Cup opener against Oman on June 6 and will play only as a batter as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained during the IPL, said head coach Andrew McDonald on Friday. Marsh played both the World Cup warm-up games against Namibia and co-hosts West Indies in Trinidad, scoring 18 and 4 respectively. But the pace-bowling all-rounder did not field for the full bowling innings in either games, with Matthew Wade taking over captaincy duties in his absence.

“For Mitch, (the warm-up games) was about ticking off where his body was at,” McDonald told cricket.com.au.

“He fielded more overs tonight (in the warm-up against West Indies), he was able to move more freely, so he’s building a little bit of confidence there. It looks as though he’s all set for the first game,” he added.

Marsh played just four matches for Delhi Capitals in the recently concluded IPL following a right hamstring niggle and he flew back to Australia in the last week of April to continue his recuperation.

“The second part is just when the bowling comes back online… it won’t be the first game,” said McDonald.

During the second warm-up game against the West Indies, Australia lost by 35 runs, with the absence of Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Cameron Green and Travis Head, who are yet to join the squad, being felt by the Kangaroos.

The Australian players who took part in the IPL flew back home to be with their families and were exempted from the warm-up fixtures.

“It was by design, in terms of when we were getting people back after the IPL; we were well aware we weren’t going to get the squad together until the first of next month,” said McDonald.

“We’ve got some things in place where we’ll bring the group together, we’ll work through our plans leading into Oman and there’s a bit of space between that game and (playing) England.” Australia will play arch-rivals and defending T20 World Cup champions England in Barbados on June 9.

“We feel as though we have plenty of time to bring that group together. It’s a familiar group, they’ve played a lot together. If they hadn’t played a lot together then the prep might have looked different,” the coach added.

“We feel comfortable though as they know how to play with each other. It will just be finalising the XIs for the games, and the balances that we want. We’ve got plenty of options.”
