A young Indian team left everyone utterly impressed after they defeated South Africa in the recently-concluded four-match T20I series. Playing under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, India dominated the Proteas in all the departments and clinched the series with 3-1 scoreline. In the fourth match in Johannesburg, India posted a whopping total of 283/1 and then bundled out South Africa for 148 and won the match by 135 runs. With this win, India broke Pakistan’s massive six-year-old T20I record.

The year 2024 has been phenomenal for India as they first won the T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma and then went on to win the T20Is against Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and now South Africa. In total, India played 26 T20Is and won 24 of them in 2024.

With these stats, India’s win percentage in T20Is in 2024 has gone up to 92.31%, the highest by any team in a calendar year. This record was earlier held by Pakistan with a percentage of 89.43% in 2018.

Not only this, India have also registered the second highest win percentage in T20 cricket as only Tamil Nadu leads the table with 93.75%. The third spot has been taken by Karnataka with 91.67%.

“There’s no secret to adapting to the conditions and situations. Our plans were very clear as soon as we landed in Durban. Last time when we came here, we played the same brand of cricket and wanted to continue that. Though we were up 2-1 in the series, today we wanted to follow the good habits and not worry about the result. It happened naturally,” Suryakumar said after India’s win in the fourth T20I.

“It was difficult to sum up what goes through our minds when we won there. It is very challenging when we tour South Africa, to come and win here, this is a special win and will stay with me forever. [on the coaching and support staff] They were sitting and enjoying the show since the first day, they spoke to the boys and said whatever you want, you do, we will sit and enjoy. Even today, they said if you want to bat first and put runs on the board, do it,” he added.

Batter Tilak Varma broke the legendary Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs scored by an Indian player in a T20I bilateral series. Varma achieved this milestone during the fourth and final T20I against South Africa in Johannesburg. Tilak delivered a stunning performance, smashing an unbeaten 120 runs off just 47 balls, including nine fours and 10 sixes, at an extraordinary strike rate of 255.32. With a century in the previous match as well, Tilak concluded the series as the top run-scorer and was awarded the ‘Player of the Series’. He amassed 280 runs in four matches at an impressive average of 140 and a strike rate exceeding 198, with two centuries to his name. This remarkable feat secured him the record for the most runs by a player in a T20I bilateral series.

Tilak surpassed Virat Kohli, who had scored 231 runs in a five-match series against England at an average of 115.50 and a strike rate of 147.13, with three half-centuries and a top score of 80*.

In the match, India won the toss and elected to bat first. After Abhishek Sharma’s quickfire 36 off 18 balls, featuring two fours and four sixes, Tilak (120* off 47 balls) and Sanju Samson (109* off 56 balls, with six fours and nine sixes) demolished the South African bowling attack with an unbeaten 210-run partnership. This effort propelled India to a mammoth total of 283/1.

In response, South Africa struggled to cope with the scoreboard pressure. Apart from brief resistance by Tristan Stubbs (43 off 29 balls, with three fours and two sixes) and David Miller (36 off 27 balls, with two fours and three sixes), no other batter made a significant contribution. South Africa was bowled out for 148 runs in 18.2 overs, suffering their largest-ever defeat in T20Is by a margin of 135 runs.

Arshdeep Singh was India’s standout bowler, claiming 3/20. Varun Chakravarty and Axar Patel picked up two wickets each, while Ravi Bishnoi, Ramandeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya chipped in with a wicket apiece.

Tilak Varma was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his exceptional performance.

Following a disappointing loss against India in the fourth T20I match of the series, South Africa skipper Aiden Markram admitted the Men in Blue “completely outplayed” the hosts in Johannesburg. India clinched a massive 135-run victory over South Africa in the fourth T20I match of the series, sealing a 3-1 series win. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Markram said that the Men in Blue dominated over the Proteas in all three aspects of the game. He also praised the Indian cricketers for their performance with both bat and ball.

The Proteas skipper accepted that India put India under pressure and it was tough for them to make a comeback.

“Completely outplayed in all three aspects of the game. Have to give them credit, bat and ball they put us under pressure and it was tough for us to come back. Some good honest reflections need to be done. As a team we will have a good reflection, as a white-ball team we have some time off, get stuck into some work and ultimately come back better players with better skills and better execution,” Markram said.

After winning the toss, India skipper Suryakumar Yadav opted to bat first. The decision proved fruitful as the team delivered an exceptional performance.

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opened for India, forging a solid 73-run partnership. Abhishek displayed an impressive knock, hitting 2 fours and 4 sixes, but his innings ended in the sixth over when Lutho Sipamla dismissed him.

As the innings entered the death overs, the partnership of Tilak Varma and Samson showed no signs of slowing down. In the 18th over, Sanju Samson brought up his century in just 51 balls, followed by Tilak Varma scoring his second T20I hundred in the very next over.

The record-breaking 210-run partnership between Samson and Tilak lifted India to a formidable 283/1. Samson contributed an explosive 109 runs off 51 balls, while Tilak smashed an unbeaten 120 off just 47 deliveries.

The South African bowling unit appeared lacklustre, with Lutho Sipamla being the only bowler to take a wicket. However, Sipamla also conceded the most runs, allowing the Indian batters to capitalise.

During the run chase, Tristan Stubbs (43 runs from 29 balls, 3 fours and 2 sixes) and David Miller (36 runs from 27 balls, 2 fours and 3 sixes) were the only top batter for the Proteas, apart from the rest failed to put up a show in Johannesburg.

Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakaravarthy led the Indian bowling attack as the visitors were successful in restricting South Africa to 148 with one over remaining and won the match by 135 runs in the fourth T20I.

Tilak Varma, who was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series, shared his thoughts on his stunning performance and the series win against South Africa in the post-match presentation. Reflecting on his innings, he humorously recalled his previous experience in South Africa and said, “Last year, when I played here, I got out on the first ball. This innings was very crucial for the team and the series.” Tilak emphasized the importance of staying calm and sticking to his basics.

“I just wanted to hold my shape and follow my basics, just like I did in the last game. I remained calm throughout,” he added.

The young batter described the feeling of scoring two centuries in South Africa as “unbelievable” and something he never imagined.

“I never imagined I’d score two hundreds in South Africa in such challenging conditions,” he said.

Tilak also expressed his gratitude towards captain Suryakumar Yadav for his support, saying, “Thanks to our captain Surya for this.”

Reflecting on his recent injury struggles, he shared how his belief in God and his process helped him recover and perform at his best.

“As I said last match, I was injured in the last few games. I believe in God and my process, that’s why I celebrated like that to God,” he added.

His performances not only helped India secure the series but also earned him recognition as one of the standout players of the series.

Records toppled as Team India sent fans into a frenzy with a thumping 134-run victory in the 4th T20I against South Africa. Johannesburg saw India make history with Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma redefining the standards of T20I cricket. Their blitzkrieg made it a hard day for statisticians as records tumbled. Runs, runs, and more runs were the story of the final T20I of the series as India continued to surge to new heights under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, with a 3-1 series win over the Proteas.

Sixes pelted down at the Wanderers Stadium, leaving South Africa shell-shocked.

The duo didn’t spare any part of the ground as they brought thunder to the field with their sheer aggression. The effort from Samson and Tilak, laced with Abhishek Sharma’s quick-fire 36, propelled India to a gigantic score of 283/1, the fifth-highest total in men’s T20I.

Samson and Tilak became just the third pair with hundreds in the same men’s T20I innings. Czech Republic’s Sabawoon Davizi and Dylan Steyn became the first to achieve the feat against Bulgaria in 2022.

Japan’s Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming and Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake replicated the elusive record against China earlier this year.

India has hammered three 250-plus totals in men’s T20Is, the most by any team in the history of the format. India eclipsed the Czech Republic, Japan and Zimbabwe, who have two 250-plus totals each.

The unbeaten 210-run partnership forged by Samson and Tilak for the second wicket is the first-ever double-century stand for India in T20Is.

On a record-breaking night in Johannesburg, India smoked 23 sixes, the joint-third-highest by any team in a men’s T20I innings. Zimbabwe holds the record with a whopping 27 sixes against Gambia last month.

India’s memorable 283/1 is the highest total by any team in South Africa in the T20 format. The previous highest registered was 271/3 by Titans against Knights in Potchefstroom in 2022.

Sanju Samson’s breathtakingly beautiful stroke-play was matched by Tilak Varma’s understated brilliance as India, riding on their record breaking twin tons, bullied a listless South Africa with a series-winning 135-run victory in the fourth and final T20 International on Friday. India thus ended this year’s T20I campaign by winning all bilateral series along with the T20 World Cup triumph and victory percentage of 92. Samson’s 109 not out off 56 balls was complemented by Varma’s 120 not out in only 47 balls as they took India to an unsurmountable 283 for 1 in 20 overs, their highest total on overseas soil. In South Africa’s run chase, Arshdeep Singh (3/20) swung the ball prodigiously under lights during an opening spell that reduced the hosts to 10 for 4 and were eventually shot out for 148 in 18.2 overs.

Among the plethora of records that tumbled, the most special one will be the two Indian batters scoring centuries in same T20I innings. Samson and Varma also posted the highest partnership for India in T20 Internationals — 210 off just 93 balls for the second wicket.

Samson completed his ton in 51 balls while Varma (41 balls) took 10 balls less.

Samson now has three T20I tons in the last five innings which also included two ducks.

It seems brilliance and disappointment exist together for the Kerala man who will certainly increase a lot of selection headache for Ajit Agarkar when Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant come back in the Indian T20I squad.

For Varma, back-to-back T20I tons on South African soil will not only increase his stocks but it also speaks volumes about the kind of team man skipper Suryakumar Yadav is. Suryakumar decided to relinquish his favourite batting spot, allowing a young talent to blossom showing what leadership is all about. Abhishek Sharma (36 off 18 balls) should also get his share of credit for upping the ante in the Powerplay with four huge sixes.

On a good batting track with true bounce on offer, Indian batters hit a record 23 sixes as it was possible to hit through the line by just clearing one’s front leg. Samson’s nine maximums was one less than Varma’s 10.

It only helped India that the opposition’s best fast bowler Gerald Coetzee seemed to be carrying a niggle. The two medium pacers Andile Simelane (0/47 in 3 overs) and Lutho Sipamla (1/58 in 4 overs) seemed like lambs for slaughter. The Indians hit 10 sixes from Simelane and Sipamla.

By the time Coetzee was brought by skipper Aiden Markram for his second spell, the damage was done. Such was the nervousness of South African bowlers that they bowled 17 wides in trying to check the momentum.

They didn’t vary the pace and pitched it on length as Samson and Varma were severe, either hitting them inside out over extra cover or at times straight down the ground.

Even Keshav Maharaj and Tristan Stubbs were not left unpunished as there was everything on the platter — cuts, pulls, slog sweeps, reverse sweeps. There wasn’t a single corner of the ground that didn’t feel the power of strokes from the two Indians.

In fact one of Samson’s shots hit a lady spectator’s cheek. The TV cameras caught her sobbing in considerable pain.

Samson was more muscle as he would slightly shuffle towards leg-stump and loft the length balls while the silken Varma would make a mockery of spinners with uppish sweep shots, stand and deliver down the ground hits.

They slowed down a touch nearing their milestones but by then they had done enough to crush the Proteas.

Indian cricket team wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson became the first player ever to score three T20I centuries in a calendar year following his sensational knock against South Africa on Friday. The India opener looked in phenomenal form as he ended up scoring off 109 just 56 balls with the help of 6 fours and 9 sixes in the fourth T20I. Samson started the four-matches series with a brilliant century but he was dismissed for a duck in the next two matches. However, that did not affect his form at all as he seemed completely in control against the South Africa bowlers on Friday and his brilliant knock took India to 283/1.
