RCB defeated Delhi Capitals to clinch WPL 2024 title© AFP

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Smriti Mandhana was ecstatic following her side’s maiden Women’s Premier League (WPL) title win on Sunday. RCB defeated Delhi Capitals by eight wickets to claim the WPL 2024 title and this was the first time that a RCB side (men’s or women’s) won a trophy. Following the victory, presenter and former Indian women’s cricket team skipper Anjum Chopra told Mandhana that she has finally won the trophy for RCB but the left-hander batter’s response won hearts. Mandhana quickly replied that that it was the team and not only her who has won the all important trophy.

“Feeling hasn’t still sunk in. Hard for me to come out with expressions. One thing I’ll say is I’m proud of the bunch. Our Bangalore leg was really good. We came to Delhi and had two tough losses,” she said.

“That’s what we spoke about that we need to step up at the right time. These tournaments are about peaking at the right time. Last year taught us a lot of things. What went wrong, what went right. Management just said this is your team, build it (your way). Thumbs up to them.”

“For RCB, it’s a lot more. I’m not the only one who won the trophy, the team has won the trophy. I’m not the person to talk about what I feel. This is in top five maybe. Obviously a World Cup would top it. Have a message for the fans – the most loyal fanbase.”

“One statement that always comes up is Ee Sala Cup Namde. Now it’s Ee Sala Cup Namdu. Kannada is not my first language but it was important to say it for the fans,” she concluded.

RCB’s spin attack weaved magic in the first innings to nullify DC’s explosive start. Sophie Molineux spearheaded the attack but the 21-year-old off-spinner Shreyanka Patil turned out to be the game-changer for RCB.

She picked up a four-wicket haul and removed the tail end within a blink of an eye to restrict DC to a sub-par total of 113. In reply, RCB comfortably chased down the target with three balls to spare and with eight wickets in hand.

“It’s Ee Sala Cup Namdu”: RCB Skipper Smriti Mandhana’s Emotional Remark After WPL 2024 Title Win https://artifex.news/its-ee-sala-cup-namdu-rcb-skipper-smriti-mandhanas-emotional-remark-after-wpl-2024-title-win-5258236/ Mon, 18 Mar 2024 09:42:17 +0000 https://artifex.news/its-ee-sala-cup-namdu-rcb-skipper-smriti-mandhanas-emotional-remark-after-wpl-2024-title-win-5258236/ Read More ““It’s Ee Sala Cup Namdu”: RCB Skipper Smriti Mandhana’s Emotional Remark After WPL 2024 Title Win” »

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Smriti Mandhana said she got solid backing from the management after their failure to win the Women’s Premier League last year, which went a long way in them lifting the title on Sunday. She said the 2023 campaign “taught us a lot of things” as her team beat Delhi Capitals by eight wickets to land the title here. With this, RCB’s spirited bunch has managed to achieve what their men’s team could not do over 16 years, and Mandhana thanked their loyal fanbase for always supporting the side. “Last year taught us a lot of things, as a player, as a captain and as a team. The management, the way they backed me during the review after the season…they have been through a lot and a big thumbs up (to them),” Mandhana said at the presentation.

On the title triumph, she said, “The feeling has not sunk in yet, maybe it will take time. Hard for me to come out with a lot of expressions. Only thing I want to say is I am proud of the bunch.

“We have been through ups and downs but they have stuck at it, and the way we have gotten past the line (tonight), it was amazing. Our Bangalore leg was really good. We had two tough losses (in Delhi). That is what we talked about.

“The last league match was like a quarter, then the semi and then the final. In such tournaments, you have to peak at the right time.” The spin pair of Shreyanka Patil (4/12) and Sophie Molineux (3/20) helped RCB bowl out DC for 113, and then, talismanic skipper Mandhana (31), Sophie Devine (32) and Elysse Perry (35 not out) saw them home with three balls to spare.

The Royal Challengers made 115 for two in 19.3 overs, a far easier victory than that tight-looking final over finish.

Mandhana added, “For them (management) to have this trophy, it is amazing for them. I am not the only one who has won the trophy, the team has won. For RCB as a franchise to win, it is really, really special.

“This win is definitely one of the top five maybe. A World Cup (win) would top it. I have a message for all the RCB fans, the most loyal fan base. Nothing would have been possible without their support. Ee Sala Cup Namde (The Cup will be ours this time) always comes up, and now I just want to say Ee Sala Cup Namdu (The Cup is ours this time).” DC, led by Meg Lanning, will rue the missed chance of bettering their runners-up position from WPL 2023, but she admitted that her team was outplayed on the day.

Lanning said, “Disappointing to not get it done tonight. We played some good cricket through the tournament. But it was about not playing well on the day. Congratulations to RCB, they outplayed us. But we can be proud of our efforts throughout.” On their batting collapse, she said, “It all happened relatively quickly, as it tends to do. Crazy things happen, and every game has been pretty close. You can never sort of rest and think it is under control because there are so many good teams.

“They (RCB) deserved the win.”

Following her side’s maiden Women’s Premier League (WPL) title win, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bowling all-rounder Sophie Molineux remarked that the title clashes are always “funny games” and the team knew that the match was going down the wire. An all-round Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) led by yet another solid knock by Ellyse Perry and brilliant bowling spells from spinners Shreyanka Patil and Sophie Molineux captured their first-ever Women’s Premier League (WPL) title after defeating Delhi Capitals by eight wickets in the title clash at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday.

Molineux received the ‘Player of the Match’ award for her bowling effort that put DC on the backfoot after a fiery start.

“It was a great match. Finals are always funny games, we knew it was going down to the wire. DC are a great team, they fought all the way. Pretty happy we got over the line. I felt like I was bowing really slow tonight. In tournaments, you have to keep learning (from your mistakes) and look forward to the next game. this one (award) is special. To be picked by RCB after not playing cricket for a while. It is an incredible competition and it is only going to go from strength to strength. Proud to be a part of it,” said Molineux in the post-match presentation.

Molineux ended the tournament with 78 runs and 12 wickets at an average of 23.16 in ten games.

DC won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Shafali Varma (44 in 27 balls, with two fours and three sixes) and skipper Meg Lanning (23 in 23 balls, with three fours) started off really well for the team with a quickfire 64-run opening stand.

However, Shreyanka Patil (4/12), Sophie Molineux (3/20) and Asha Sobhana (2/14) helped RCB bounce back just after the powerplay and removed Delhi batters one-by-one, triggering an unfathomable batting collapse. DC was all out for 113 in 18.3 overs.

In the chase of 114, RCB put on a 49-run opening stand, powered by Sophie Devine (32 in 27 balls, with five fours and a six). However, RCB was tested by Delhi bowlers in middle overs and skipper Smriti Mandhana (31 in 39 balls, with three fours) departed at a crucial juncture to leave RCB at 82/2 in 15 overs. However, Ellyse Perry (35* in 37 balls, with four boundaries) and Richa Ghosh (17* in 14 balls, with two fours) finished the chase with three balls left.

Minnu Mani and Shikha Pandey took a wicket each for DC.

This is RCB’s first-ever T20 title across both WPL and the Indian Premier League (IPL). Chasing 114, RCB started off cautiously, getting just 18 runs in their first four overs. Openers Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine did not take much risks, except for two boundaries by the New Zealand batter.

The Red and Gold side had a decent powerplay. At the end of six overs, RCB was 25/0, with Smriti (12*) and Sophie (13*) unbeaten.

Devine let her arms loose in the seventh over, smashing Radha Yadav for three fours and a six. She got 18 runs from that over and that took RCB to 43/0 in seven overs.

With a couple by Devine, RCB reached the 50-run mark in eight overs.

Shikha Pandey ended the threatening stand between Mandhana and Sophie, trapping the latter leg-before-wicket for 32 in 27 balls, with five fours and a six. RCB was 49/1 in 8.1 overs.

RCB’s superstar all-rounder Ellyse Perry was next up on the crease and brought up RCB’s 50-run mark in 8.2 overs.

Halfway through the innings, RCB was 56/1, with Perry (3*) and Smriti (21*) unbeaten.

For next few overs, DC managed to keep the RCB batters shut and the run rate low. A boundary each by Mandhana and Perry in the 13th over by Arundhati Yadav eased off some pressure, taking the score to 72/1 in 13 overs.

The budding partnership was finally broken by Minnu Mani, who got the wicket of skipper Smriti for 31 in 39 balls, with three fours. The left-handed batter’s mistimed shot got into the hands of Arundhati Reddy at mid-on. RCB was 82/2 in 15 overs, needing 31 in the final five overs.

An economical 16th over by Alice Capsey brought down the equation to 27 in final four overs. In the next over by Mini, RCB gathered nine runs, including a four by Richa Ghosh, leaving the team with 18 runs to get in three overs.

The next over by Jonassen also produced a boundary by Perry, leaving RCB with 11 to get in two overs.

RCB’s equation came down to five runs in the final over. Richa hit the winning shot, finishing RCB’s innings at 115/2 in 19.3 overs, with Richa (17*) and Perry (35*) unbeaten.

Minnu and Shikha took a wicket each.

Earlier, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) spinners, particularly Sophie Molineux and Shreyanka Patil helped the side overcome a solid start by Delhi Capitals openers Meg Lanning and Shefali Verma and bundled out the hosts for 113.

After winning the toss, DC batters Lanning and Shefali came out to the crease. Both batters started their innings with an aggressive approach as they put on a 50-run partnership inside five overs.

Shefali was sent back to the pavilion in the eighth over after playing a blistering knock of 44 runs in 27 balls which was laced with two fours and three sixes.

In the same over Sophie Molineux dismissed the two in-form batters Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey were sent back to the dressing room without opening their account. DC were 64/3 after eight overs despite getting an outstanding start from the opening batters.

Lanning got dismissed when the team score was 74 after scoring 23 runs with the help of three boundaries.

Inside seven runs, the DC franchise lost two more wickets as first Marizanne Kapp got dismissed after scoring just eight runs when the team score was 80 and then at 81 DC lost the wicket of Jess Jonassen who was able to score just three runs.

Right-hand batters Radha Yadav (12) and Arundhati Reddy (10) played small knocks but that were not enough for the side. DC managed to cross the 100-run mark in 15.5 overs.

But the hosts could not play their full quota of 20 overs and were bundled out for 113 runs in 18.3 overs.

The highest wicket-taker for RCB was Shreyanka who snapped four wickets in her spell of 3.3 overs where she conceded just 12 runs.

Three wickets were grabbed by Molineux in her spell of four overs where she conceded 20 runs. Two wickets were grabbed by young leg-spinner Asha Sobhana in her spell of three overs where she conceded 14 runs.

Delhi Capitals lost the plot against Royal Challengers Bangalore spinners after a flying start, crumbling like a pack of cards to be bowled out for 113 in the Women’s Premier League final on Sunday. DC were cruising at 64 for no loss in 43 balls before they committed harakiri, losing 10 wickets for just 49 runs in front of a 28,781 capacity crowd, who looked divided in their loyalties. Australia’s left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux (3/20) started DC’s downfall, picking up three wickets in the eighth over. Thereafter, the hosts never really recovered, losing wickets at regular intervals, courtesy some loose shots and off-spinner Shreyanka Patil‘s (4/12) exploits in the middle and late overs hastened their end.

Opting to bat, DC skipper Meg Lanning (23 off 23) and Shafali Verma (44 off 27) looked in a different world as they upped the tempo in a linear fashion.

Lanning, the second highest run-getter in the tournament, played the second fiddle as Shafali went hammer and tongs after a slow start in the first 11 balls.

Shafali was particularly destructive straight down the ground as she slammed her first three sixes in that region. She opened up her arms in the final delivery of the second over when she went down on her knee to dispatch Molineux over long on for the first six of the innings.

The right-arm fast bowler Renuka Singh was taken to task in the fourth over, which yielded 19 runs.

Shafali started the onslaught clobbering the bowler over her head for a six, which eventually inspired Lanning.

Lanning then struck two boundaries off the last two deliveries of the same over to match her partner.

Ellyse Perry also bore the brunt of Shafali’s wrath as the Australian all-rounder was hit over for a maximum and then a boundary as DC reached 52 in five overs.

The DC openers continued their attacking game and hit Sophie Devine for a boundary each in the next over to take the home team forward.

But RCB managed to put brakes on DC when Molineux scalped three wickets in the eighth over, dismissing Shafali, Jemmimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey, the last two wickets even put her in the line for a hat-trick which eventually didn’t happen.

After reaching 72 for 3 at the halfway mark, DC’s mainstay Lanning, who was trying to resurrect the innings, departed, trapped leg before Shreyanka but not after she wasted a review.

Thereafter, the home team kept losing wickets in search of unnecessary big shots to stumble to 81 for six.

It was mayhem for DC as they lost seven wickets for mere 23 runs in that period.
