Moments after Rajasthan Royals sealed the final Indian Premier League playoffs berth with a convincing win over Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday (May24, 2026) night, head coach Kumar Sangakkara passionately defended captain Riyan Parag, insisting the young allrounder remains the “absolute right guy” to lead the franchise despite a turbulent IPL 2026 season.

Parag’s maiden full season as captain has been marked by inconsistent batting returns, recurring fitness concerns and off-field scrutiny, including repeated social media criticism following the vaping incident in the dressing room during a match. Yet, Sangakkara made it clear that the Royals management remains firmly invested in the 24-year-old.

“I have seen very few players who have been criticised like Riyan has been for about seven years now,” Sangakkara said. “Ever since I came to the franchise, there have always been people who liked Riyan, but there are a lot who didn’t really like him, especially on social media. But that’s the reality of the modern game.”

The former Sri Lankan captain revealed that Rajasthan never doubted Parag’s leadership credentials when handing him the captaincy before the season.

“When we decided to offer Riyan the captaincy, he was the absolute right guy to lead this franchise. I have no doubt in my mind,” Sangakkara said.

Despite battling physical niggles through parts of the campaign and enduring fluctuating form with the bat, Parag continued to front up for the Royals during their successful late push towards qualification. Sangakkara particularly praised the batter’s resilience and commitment.

“The confidence with which he drives himself, sometimes almost on one foot to come and play, there is a huge amount of positivity,” Sangakkara observed. “I think he has captained exceptionally well.”

Sangakkara also stressed that Parag commands complete respect inside the dressing room, irrespective of outside noise.

“Sometimes what you see on the outside is not Riyan Parag,” he said. “He is a lovely, soft, gentle, really determined, smart young man. He has learned a lot in the last few years and he will continue on that journey.”

Ershad Sultan was arrested on June 30.

Kolkata:

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday acquitted a person who was arrested on the charge of criticising a state minister on social media.

A single-judge bench of Justice Amrita Sinha directed that Ershad Sultan be released immediately.

The matter related to a meeting of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with members of her cabinet, bureaucrats, police officers and heads of the different municipalities in the state on June 28.

The administration arranged for the live streaming of the entire meeting. During the meeting, the arrested person made a comment accusing West Bengal minister Arup Roy and some local Trinamool Congress leaders of encouraging illegal construction in Howrah by illegally filling up water bodies.

The police registered a FIR against Sultan the same day and he was arrested on June 30. His family members approached the High Court against the arrest and the matter came up for hearing on Wednesday.

During the hearing, Justice Sinha raised some questions on the arrest. Her first question was whether the police could arrest anyone if the latter complains or expresses a grievance against anyone. She also questioned whether the arrest was prompted by a complaint from the minister.

Finally she observed that the police has unnecessarily intervened in the matter on the basis of a complaint by a third person.

The employee was fired for asking for bereavement leave.

An American company is facing the wrath of social media users as it fired an employee who asked for leave after his mother’s death. The criticism was so harsh that the company Koroseal, which produces wall coverings, had to deactivate all its social media profiles.

According to a Reddit post, a Koroseal employee had taken three days of bereavement leave following his mother’s death. However, when he requested an extension for his leave, the company chose to terminate his employment.

The post was shared by the employee who was sacked and it immediately started gaining traction.

Fired over EMAIL because of my mom dying.

In the post, the former Koroseal employee explained that he was given three days of unpaid bereavement leave after his mother died.

“[I] was given 3 bereavement leave days to travel all the way to Florida, bury my mom and hurry back home – no time to rest, grieve, anything,” the Reddit user wrote. “I honestly haven’t even had time to grieve as it’s all been a blur.”

After sending an email to the HR department to ask for a four-day extension of his unpaid leave, the man was abruptly fired and without any formalities.

“She said they’ve been gracious enough by offering me bereavement and basically fired me over email telling me they’ll mail my final check,” the man posted.

Soon, users started bombarding Koroseal’s social handles with angry messages over the “heartless treatment” meted out to the employee during a challenging period.

The employee, who is presently residing in his car, provided an additional update on his Reddit post, mentioning that his employers reached out to him, urging him to remove the social media post. However, he affirmed his decision not to delete the post.

“I’ve been contacted and asked to remove this post! Also, all my replies and tweets have been hidden on their Twitter page (@Koroseal), and they are hiding posts on their Facebook page as well (Koroseal Interior Products). I will not be removing this post,” he said.

Nevertheless, the company has opted to deactivate all of its social media accounts across various platforms. Despite this action, they continue to face substantial criticism from users on social media.
