Veteran opener Mayank Agarwal on Thursday was named as Karnataka’s captain for the Vijay Hazare Trophy to be held in Ahmedabad from December 21 to January 5, 2025. It will be a chance for Agarwal to make amends as his side failed to enter the knockouts of the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The most notable aspect of the selection was the elevation of Shreyas Gopal as the vice-captain. The leg-spin all-rounder had returned to Karnataka at the beginning of this season after spending the previous season with Kerala.

Shreyas was rewarded for being the leading wicket-taker for Karnataka in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He took 14 wickets from seven matches at an excellent economy of 6.1.

Seasoned batter and former captain Manish Pandey was overlooked in what could be the end of the road for him with the state team.

Karnataka will open their campaign against Mumbai at the Narendra Modi Stadium in on December 21.

Apart from Karnataka and Mumbai, the Group C will feature Puducherry, Punjab, Arunachal Pradesh, Saurashtra, Hyderabad and Nagaland.

Karnataka are four-time champions of the premier domestic 50-over competition and their last title win came in the 2019-20 season.

The squad: Mayank Agarwal (captain), Shreyas Gopal (vice-captain), S Nikin Jose, KV Aneesh, R Smaran, KL Shrijith, Abhinav Manohar, Hardik Raj, Vyshak Vijaykumar, Vasuki Koushik, Vidyadhar Patil, Kishan Bedare, Abhilash Shetty, Manoj Bhandage, Pravin Dubey, Luvnith Sisodia.

Karnataka spinner Shreyas Gopal levelled with compatriot Amit Mishra to register the most hat-tricks by an Indian bowler in T20 cricket. Gopal reached this accomplishment during his side’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Baroda on Tuesday. During the game, while defending a total of 170 runs set on the back of a fine half-century from Abhinav Manohar (56 in 34 balls, with six sixes), Karnataka seemed to be in trouble with Baroda at 102/1 in 10 overs. Gopal, who was recently bought by CSK for Rs 30 lakh in the IPL auction, turned the game on its head by removing Shashwat Rawat for 63 in 37 balls, with seven fours and two sixes.

It was followed by him getting scalps of Pandya brothers, Hardik and Krunal for golden ducks, which earned him a hat-trick and his team a chance to win the game.

Gopal’s figures of 4/19 ultimately went in vain as wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Solanki remained unbeaten on 28 to guide his team to a four-wicket win with seven balls left.

Gopal now has the second-most hat-tricks by any bowler in T20 cricket, tying with Mishra. One of his hat-tricks was during the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) when playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR) against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), he removed Virat Kohli, Marcus Stoinis, and AB de Villiers. He also has a hat-trick against Haryana from the 2018-19 season.

The most hat-tricks by a bowler in T20s are by star Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan, who has a total of four hat-tricks in T20s.

Gopal has played 103 T20s, taking 124 wickets at an average of 19.13, with the best figures of 5/11. He has also scored 525 runs in 42 innings at an average of 16.93, with best score of 48*.

In the ongoing SMAT 2024, he is the leading wicket-taker with 14 scalps in six matches at an average of 8.92, that includes a five-wicket haul too.

“For A Decade…”: MI Star On How Hardik Pandya Is Dealing With ‘Daily’ Booing In IPL 2024 https://artifex.news/there-in-his-head-mi-insider-reveals-how-hardik-pandya-is-reacting-to-daily-booing-5463926/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 15:48:33 +0000 https://artifex.news/there-in-his-head-mi-insider-reveals-how-hardik-pandya-is-reacting-to-daily-booing-5463926/ Read More ““For A Decade…”: MI Star On How Hardik Pandya Is Dealing With ‘Daily’ Booing In IPL 2024” »

With Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya continuing to receive hostile treatment from fans in the ongoing Indian Premier League, his teammate Shreyas Gopal felt on Wednesday it will only strengthen his resolve to come back stronger with some good performances. Pandya was announced as MI captain for the IPL 2024 season, replacing fan-favourite Rohit Sharma, who led the franchise to five titles. The change of guard hasn’t gone down well with the fans, who have expressed their displeasure by booing Pandya across venues.

Recalling his friendship with Pandya, Gopal said the MI skipper is mentally very strong to get unnerved by the behaviour of the crowd.

“I have known Hardik for a decade, and nothing much has changed. He is a really tough guy, and something like this is only going to motivate him,” said Gopal during a press conference ahead of the clash against Punjab Kings.

“The way he has taken it so far is very inspiring for a lot of us. Although it’s not easy to take it daily, he is strong and kudos to him.

“He has not let it affect him personally. But, it will probably be there in his head.”

Under Pandya’s leadership, MI have won just two of their six games so far and are placed eighth in the 10-team table.

Gopal, however, said the dressing room atmosphere remains positive and the team will bounce back.

“The team atmosphere is great. Unfortunately, we couldn’t cross the line on the winning side in the last match, but every team goes through ups and downs. When you start hitting a purple patch, you start clicking as a team,” he said.

“We did see a couple of good games when we came together as a group. We must put all aspects (batting, bowling and fielding) together in one match. We have been playing some really good cricket.

“History says that (we get off to poor starts). But, when we come together, the character is shown. This team always has that X-factor that stands up and wants to prove to themselves that they are good enough to win championships.”
