Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday drafted in Sneh Rana as replacement for injured Shreyanka Patil for the remainder of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025. Shreyanka, who has played 15 matches for RCB and has scalped 19 wickets with her off-spin, is ruled out of the third edition of tournament due to an unspecified injury.

“Challenges are tough, Shrey. But you’re tougher. We know how hard you tried to get fit before #WPL2025. And how badly you’ll miss being a part of our campaign, and we will carry your energy and spirit with us on the field as well!,” the RCB mentioned in a post on their official X account.

“Get well soon and come back stronger! Can’t wait to see you play in the Red Blue and Gold of RCB next year,” the franchise added.

Shreyanka had also missed the white ball assignments at home against the West Indies and Ireland last year because of an injury.

The 30-year-old Rana, who is an off-spin all-rounder, has previously played for Gujarat Giants in the WPL.

She has joined RCB for Rs 30 lakh.

Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru began their title defence with a six-wicket win over Gujarat Giants at Vadodara on Friday.

India all-rounder Shreyanka Patil is among the nominees for the ICC Women’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year award for 2024. Annerie Dercksen (South Africa), Saskia Horley (Scotland) and Freya Sargent (Ireland) are the other candidates for the award, the International Cricket Council announced on Saturday. Patil’s debut for India in December 2023 was just the beginning of an incredible year. The young bowler has been a consistent performer for India across white-ball formats, regularly delivering in high-pressure situations.

Primarily known for her bowling, Patil also has untapped potential as a lower-order batter. Her standout performances in the Women’s T20 Asia Cup and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup have cemented her place in the team.

In a must-win World Cup clash against Pakistan, Patil’s figures of 2/14 helped restrict the opposition to 105/8. Her economical bowling, including a wicket-maiden, played a pivotal role in keeping India’s campaign alive.

From academia to international cricket, Annerie Dercksen’s rise has been remarkable. A teacher by qualification, the 23-year-old made her debut in 2023 and quickly became an integral part of South Africa’s squad. She played a crucial role in South Africa’s journey to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final in 2024.

Batting lower down the order, Dercksen capitalised on her opportunities, notably scoring 69 runs in a three-match T20I series against England. Her contributions with the ball across formats further highlighted her potential as an all-rounder.

Dercksen’s unbeaten 44 off 23 balls in the T20I series decider against Pakistan was a match-winning effort. With South Africa chasing 154, she smashed six boundaries and two sixes, steering her team to a thrilling victory and earning the Player of the Match award.

Saskia Horley has been a transformative figure for Scotland’s women’s cricket team. Starting her journey on a cricket TV show alongside Ellyse Perry, Horley has gone on to make history for her country.

Horley’s ODI performances in 2024 were particularly remarkable, including Scotland’s first-ever century in Women’s ODIs. She also contributed significantly with the ball, showcasing her all-round prowess in multiple series, including the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers.

In a tri-series against the Netherlands and PNG, Horley scored a composed 100 off 121 balls and followed it up with a four-wicket haul (4/24), leading Scotland to their highest ODI total of 258/6 and a commanding victory.

At just 18 years old, Freya Sargent has quickly become a key player for Ireland. With career-best figures of 3/29 in ODIs and 3/30 in T20Is, she has demonstrated her ability to perform against top-tier teams.

Sargent’s maturity and composure, especially in pressure situations, have stood out. Her all-round contributions in both formats make her one of the most exciting young talents in international cricket.

Opening the bowling against England in a T20I, Sargent took three crucial wickets, including a run-out, to finish with 3/30. Her match-defining spell showcased her ability to rise to the occasion against formidable opponents.

Armed With Dog-Fight Spirit, Shreyanka Patil Ready To Shine In Women’s T20 World Cup With WPL Learnings https://artifex.news/armed-with-dog-fight-spirit-shreyanka-patil-ready-to-shine-in-womens-t20-world-cup-with-wpl-learnings-6652144/ Thu, 26 Sep 2024 06:25:11 +0000 https://artifex.news/armed-with-dog-fight-spirit-shreyanka-patil-ready-to-shine-in-womens-t20-world-cup-with-wpl-learnings-6652144/ Read More “Armed With Dog-Fight Spirit, Shreyanka Patil Ready To Shine In Women’s T20 World Cup With WPL Learnings” »

After Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pulled off a stunning six-run win over Mumbai Indians in the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) Eliminator, assistant coach Malolan Rangarajan lauded the ‘dog-fight’ spirit inside Shreyanka Patil to step up and win the game for the team with a match-turning spell of 2-16. After a day’s break, Shreyanka, with her trademark pink hairband and ponytail, was at it again – taking 3-12 in the final to help RCB beat Delhi Capitals and lift its maiden WPL title in New Delhi.

Quiz Shreyanka about the origins of her dog-fight spirit when on the field and the happy-go-luck all-rounder reveals it all in a conversation with IANS held earlier this month during clothing brand QUA’s shoot in New Delhi.

“It comes very naturally to me. Since the time I was a kid, I didn’t like to lose. So I kind of get up and say ‘okay, I’m going to try very hard and give it everything no matter what’. So I love to have that fighting spirit with me always, and it just comes naturally,” she said.

WPL 2024 was a tournament of two halves for Shreyanka – she took only two wickets in first four games held in her hometown Bengaluru, before a hand injury sidelined her for next two matches. After that, Shreyanka returned with a bang – taking a whopping 11 wickets in four matches to be the leading wicket-taker of WPL 2024 and add more sparks to RCB’s glittering trophy win.

“Personally for me everyone would look, and say okay she’s got the purple cap. But for me it was like the roller coaster of a ride because first half, in Bengaluru, I couldn’t perform at my best. I was just a little disappointed because I let my Bengaluru fans down and all of that, but how did that change? So I went back and Malo sir helped me with my bowling and then Smriti (Mandhana, captain) literally backed me up no matter what.

“So I’m very grateful for Smriti and the whole management who literally supported me at that time and then I could go to practice. The second half really turned out to be a good one for me, and I really enjoyed the crowd. When I came back home, it was just like thousands of people in front of my house asking for selfies.

“They were saying, ‘Madam, you really did well. You were just amazing. We loved your bowling. We loved your smile’. Listening to all these comments, I couldn’t stop smiling and it was just so amazing. The crowd and chants were there; we then went to RCB bar and café, where the crowd was packed and I really enjoyed that moment,” said Shreyanka.

Largely seen as a WPL discovery, Shreyanka lit up the inaugural season in 2023, despite a disappointing run for RCB, by amassing 62 runs with the bat in seven innings and picking six wickets. She then claimed nine wickets in two matches for India A to win Emerging Women’s Asia Cup in Hong Kong, and went on to play for India in both white-ball formats.

In between, there was a stint with Guyana Amazon Warriors in Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL), where she took nine wickets in five games. Adept at bowling across different phases of a game, especially in the death overs, Shreyanka candidly admits playing two seasons of the WPL has given her a lot of learnings.

“This year when we faced that crowd in Bengaluru, it was just massive. When we get so much attention from the audience, we also think like ‘Okay, people are watching us. So we will want to do more and give our best’. It’s something which we keep doing always.

“But when you see people turning out and saying ‘Wow, they play so well’ – that’s again a plus point for all of us. Playing with someone like Ellyse Perry or Smriti Mandhana, and just being on and off the field with them, you get to learn a lot of stuff. So it’s just amazing that WPL is a platform which has really set the standards for domestic players and women cricketers.”

At RCB during the WPL, Shreyanka enjoyed playing alongside Australia spin duo of Sophie Molineux and Georgia Wareham. “Even during the practice session, they were just coming and helping me out. They were asking questions as well from me. So it was two-way learning for us.”

But the WPL 2024 eliminator game, where Shreyanka took the key wickets of Hayley Matthews and Harmanpreet Kaur as RCB successfully defended 135 on a slow Delhi pitch, served as a key learning for her in terms of turning a corner from any situation in a game.

“In that match, literally everyone thought RCB was going to lose. We were all smiling, just chill, not fully hyped up or something. Then Pez (Ellyse Perry) comes out running and we all came into the huddle and she’s like, ‘Just breathe. We can pull this off, we can do it’.

“Smriti also was literally pumped up. So I don’t know why we felt that very positive energy all of a sudden. Then we just won that match from nowhere. So that’s how that energy, and vibe was created (to make a turnaround).”

In terms of her India career, standing at 12 T20Is and three ODIs, Shreyanka feels very grateful to have support of captain Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti and Jemimah Rodrigues. “They are such a nice bunch of people, and have literally supported me and stood by my side saying, ‘No matter what, we’ll just back you up’.”

She has also found backers through her fellow spin-bowling mates Radha Yadav, Deepti Sharma and Asha Sobhana. “Whenever we practice we talk to each other, not just during the match, but also during the practice as well. We know what the other person’s strengths are and say to each other that we’ll bowl in this and that areas. So we kind of strategise and also practice the same way.”

In July, Shreyanka suffered a fracture in her finger while taking a catch in India’s Women’ s Asia Cup match against Pakistan, sidelining her from the competition in Sri Lanka. After making a successful recovery, Shreyanka attended the preparatory camp at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru before departing to play in the Women’s T20 World Cup from October 3-20 in the UAE.

She believes the Indian team is well-equipped to take up any challenge presented to them in the UAE. “We’ll have to adapt to the conditions quickly, and that’s why we’re playing warm up games and the practice sessions we’re doing there. So it’s going to help us, and I’m really looking forward for this World Cup. It’s going to be fun.”

This month, six of her India team-mates secured Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) contracts. Shreyanka was also in the overseas draft, but didn’t find any takers, to which she admitted about being little disappointed. “But I know what areas I’ll have to work on. I’ll have to work on my batting and say that okay, I’m going to be the best all-rounder, and I’m going to come with a bang (in future).”

At 10, Shreyanka took to cricket at her dad Rajesh Patil’s academy, Efficient Sports, and found herself at home as an off-spin all-rounder after dabbling in medium-pace, leg-spin and even wicketkeeping. She credits her father for the support to make a career out of playing cricket and felt proud plus very special when the parents plus her coach Arjun Dev came in to watch her do well in an international game.

It was an encounter with Dev in 2019 that prompted a teenaged Shreyanka to move out of her parents’ home in the main city and live in a rented home close to NICE Cricket Arena, which Dev started at Huttanahalli in 2021. The academy is now a place where Shreyanka practises and works relentlessly on her craft.

“For us it was like okay, you have to play India like when you’re 15, 16, 17. But when I met him, he just said ‘Give me five years and don’t think of any selection. But don’t worry about anything’. He kind of changed that mindset. At NICE, we have our own set-up and turf there. Everything we practice, it’s based on match scenarios. We do drills and everything which is there, but kind of touch upon everything.

“Suppose I am a finisher now, so what are those scenarios to practice – like five balls, ten runs. He’s changed the whole thinking process in me and is my backbone basically. Really grateful for him. He doesn’t miss any of my games literally – be it domestic or international games, league matches – he won’t miss.”

The practice sessions with Dev, who tracks her cricket career closely, also involve dealing with pressure, which Shreyanka calls as a good thing. “When I say pressure, it’s not like I think negative or something. I keep my stress cool under pressure because that’s what I practice during my practice sessions as well when I’m at NICE.

“I kind of put myself into those pressure situations – last two balls, four runs to win. How am I going to bowl? So all of that repetition in practice sessions also kind of helped me settle those nerves.”

This clarity and simplicity of her practice routines also reflects in Shreyanka’s pre-game routine. “Whatever I love to do, it depends on where I’m also. If I’m in Delhi, I go to some restaurant before a game, have lunch with my coach and then just discuss about the game and then just have a nap, hit the gym and then just go for the game.”

Shreyanka also considers fortunate to have the support of a dear friend in Ananya Upendran, a former India A fast-bowler. Ananya, now a consultant with the DC franchise, frequently takes Shreyanka for lunch to restaurants in Bengaluru that serve Appam, which is the off-spin all-rounder’s favourite dish.

“She loves me, not just the cricket bit, but also for the way I am. She’s always been the support system for me. She’s always been helping, and comes up with a lot of sentences, and words, so it’s just amazing,” concluded Shreyanka.

Young India spinner Shreyanka Patil has been ruled out of the remainder of the on-going Women’s Asia Cup T20 tournament after fracturing the fourth finger of her left-hand. Shreyanka, who had sustained the injury while attempting to take a catch during India’s opening match against Pakistan, was replaced by Tanuja Kanwar in the squad, the Asian Cricket Council said in a release. The 21-year-old had played a vital role against Pakistan, bagging two for 14 in her 3.2 overs, which helped India bowl out the opposition for a low score.

Kanwar, the uncapped 26-year-old left-arm spinner, had played for Gujarat Giants in this year’s Women’s Premier League (WPL), snaring 10 wickets from eight matches at an economy of 7.13.

Shreyanka, who has played 12 T20Is and three ODIs for India after making her debut in December 2023, had suffered a hairline fracture on the same hand during the WPL this year.

She had missed a few games for Royal Challengers Bengaluru but claimed 13 wickets — the highest by any bowler — which included a four-wicket haul in the WPL final.

Shreyanka will be hoping to regain her fitness at the earliest with the Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled later in October in Bangladesh.

The first day of the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup on July 19 will see the big clash between India and Pakistan at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium. India come in as the defending champions and have won the tournament seven times.

They also have an 11-3 lead over Pakistan in women’s T20I meetings. On the other hand, Pakistan enter the event after an inconsistent run of results in their bilateral commitments but have the confidence to upstage India, as they did in the 2022 edition of the tournament at Sylhet in Bangladesh.

We look at the players to watch out for in the upcoming big clash between India and Pakistan, which will be streamed live on Disney Hotstar for eager fans in India:

1. Smriti Mandhana

The India vice-captain comes into the tournament on the back of a scintillating performance across formats in the recent home series against South Africa. Scores of 117, 136 and 90 in India’s 3-0 ODI sweep at Bengaluru fetched her Player of the Series Award. It was followed by the left-handed opener making 149 in the lone Test and scores of 46 and 54 not out in the two T20Is at Chennai. With Shafali Verma in good form too, expect Smriti to bat for long and take India to a winning position.

2. Renuka Singh Thakur

The fast-bowler, who won the ICC Emerging Player of the Year Award in 2022, is tipped to lead the Indian fast-bowling challenge in the Asia Cup. Her excellent performance of 3-18 in the T20I series opener against Bangladesh, along with her previous excellent performances against Australia and England, is still very much fresh in the minds of fans.

3. Deepti Sharma

The off-spin all-rounder boasts of a staggering achievement -– the first Indian woman to score 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in women’s T20Is. Her ability to control the run flow and deceive batters with flight, turn, and loop will be a major challenge for Pakistan’s middle order. The last time India won the Asia Cup, Deepti had bagged the Player of the Series Award for picking 13 scalps, the most by any bowler in the competition. Deepti’s left-handed batting adds another weapon to her arsenal, making her a truly valuable player in the Indian line-up.

4. Shreyanka Patil

The young all-rounder from Bengaluru is an off-spinner and can maintain tight lines, which also her become the WPL 2024 leading wicket-taker with 13 scalps. Having quickly risen through the domestic ranks, Patil’s potential to pick up crucial wickets, along with her handy batting and fielding skills, makes her a complete package to watch in this high-stakes game.

5. Nida Dar

The Pakistan skipper brings experience and versatility to the bowling attack through her crafty off-spin bowling. This year, Nida became the highest wicket-taker in women’s T20Is during Pakistan’s second game against England in Northampton. Her sharp off-spin deliveries and power-hitting abilities make her a true all-rounder for Pakistan, something that India has experienced in the past during their last Asia Cup meeting in Sylhet.

6. Sidra Amin

The right-handed batter has been on a good run with the bat this year — she has 205 runs from eight innings for T20Is in Pakistan this year. She and Muneeba Ali have been the lynchpins of Pakistan’s batting order and a lot depends on them when they face a strong Indian bowling line-up.

7. Omaima Sohail

The right-handed top-order batter, who also bowls off-spin, last played for Pakistan on their tour of New Zealand and is now back in the national team for the Asia Cup, where she would be itching to make a big statement against India, after going through the grind in domestic tournaments.

8. Syeda Aroob Shah

The leg-spin all-rounder came back into the national set-up for the first time since Pakistan’s series against South Africa last year. Aroob made her international debut in 2019 as a 15-year-old, quickly garnering attention for her skill and composure on the field. With an ability to deceive batters and provide crucial breakthroughs, she can come in handy if Pakistan field her on Friday against India.

This was the first time that a RCB side (men’s or women’s) won a title and Shreyanka had a special message for Virat Kohli and Co for their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign.

“I mean we were all waiting for this cup for past 16 years and we finally did it but I think the men’s team are doing really great. She was the cynosure of all eyes on Sunday having played a massive role in RCB’s WPL triumph but Tuesday night gave ‘Purple Cap’ winner Shreyanka Patil a chance to enjoy a rare ‘Fan Girl’ moment with none other than Virat Kohli. The 21-year-old off-spinner, who had been a revelation in both eliminator and final with her match-winning performances at the death, couldn’t stop gushing on social media when she realised that her childhood idol actually knew her name.

“Started watching cricket cos of him. Grew up dreaming to be like him. And last night, had the moment of my life,” she wrote on ‘X’, posting her picture alongside Kohli from the RCB ‘Unbox’ event.

“Virat said, ‘Hi Shreyanka, well bowled.’ He actually knows my name,” the surreal feeling was yet to sink and it was understandable from her post.

Shreyanka was picked up by RCB during inaugural WPL auctions last year at base price of Rs 10 lakh and she finished with six wickets in seven matches, the most for her team.

In September, the 21-year-old offie played in the CPL for Guyana Amazon Warriors, where she finished with the most wickets (9) in the tournament.

The performances were noticed by the Indian selectors, who called her up for the home T20 series against England in December last year and she made her national team debut on December 6.

Since then there has been no looking back for the youngsters, who battled many a injuries, to stake her claim in the national team with her performances.

Shreyanka has so far represented India in two ODIs and six T20Is, picking up four and and eight wickets respectively.

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Smriti Mandhana was ecstatic following her side’s maiden Women’s Premier League (WPL) title win on Sunday. RCB defeated Delhi Capitals by eight wickets to claim the WPL 2024 title and this was the first time that a RCB side (men’s or women’s) won a trophy. Following the victory, presenter and former Indian women’s cricket team skipper Anjum Chopra told Mandhana that she has finally won the trophy for RCB but the left-hander batter’s response won hearts. Mandhana quickly replied that that it was the team and not only her who has won the all important trophy.

“Feeling hasn’t still sunk in. Hard for me to come out with expressions. One thing I’ll say is I’m proud of the bunch. Our Bangalore leg was really good. We came to Delhi and had two tough losses,” she said.

“That’s what we spoke about that we need to step up at the right time. These tournaments are about peaking at the right time. Last year taught us a lot of things. What went wrong, what went right. Management just said this is your team, build it (your way). Thumbs up to them.”

“For RCB, it’s a lot more. I’m not the only one who won the trophy, the team has won the trophy. I’m not the person to talk about what I feel. This is in top five maybe. Obviously a World Cup would top it. Have a message for the fans – the most loyal fanbase.”

“One statement that always comes up is Ee Sala Cup Namde. Now it’s Ee Sala Cup Namdu. Kannada is not my first language but it was important to say it for the fans,” she concluded.

RCB’s spin attack weaved magic in the first innings to nullify DC’s explosive start. Sophie Molineux spearheaded the attack but the 21-year-old off-spinner Shreyanka Patil turned out to be the game-changer for RCB.

She picked up a four-wicket haul and removed the tail end within a blink of an eye to restrict DC to a sub-par total of 113. In reply, RCB comfortably chased down the target with three balls to spare and with eight wickets in hand.

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Smriti Mandhana said she got solid backing from the management after their failure to win the Women’s Premier League last year, which went a long way in them lifting the title on Sunday. She said the 2023 campaign “taught us a lot of things” as her team beat Delhi Capitals by eight wickets to land the title here. With this, RCB’s spirited bunch has managed to achieve what their men’s team could not do over 16 years, and Mandhana thanked their loyal fanbase for always supporting the side. “Last year taught us a lot of things, as a player, as a captain and as a team. The management, the way they backed me during the review after the season…they have been through a lot and a big thumbs up (to them),” Mandhana said at the presentation.

On the title triumph, she said, “The feeling has not sunk in yet, maybe it will take time. Hard for me to come out with a lot of expressions. Only thing I want to say is I am proud of the bunch.

“We have been through ups and downs but they have stuck at it, and the way we have gotten past the line (tonight), it was amazing. Our Bangalore leg was really good. We had two tough losses (in Delhi). That is what we talked about.

“The last league match was like a quarter, then the semi and then the final. In such tournaments, you have to peak at the right time.” The spin pair of Shreyanka Patil (4/12) and Sophie Molineux (3/20) helped RCB bowl out DC for 113, and then, talismanic skipper Mandhana (31), Sophie Devine (32) and Elysse Perry (35 not out) saw them home with three balls to spare.

The Royal Challengers made 115 for two in 19.3 overs, a far easier victory than that tight-looking final over finish.

Mandhana added, “For them (management) to have this trophy, it is amazing for them. I am not the only one who has won the trophy, the team has won. For RCB as a franchise to win, it is really, really special.

“This win is definitely one of the top five maybe. A World Cup (win) would top it. I have a message for all the RCB fans, the most loyal fan base. Nothing would have been possible without their support. Ee Sala Cup Namde (The Cup will be ours this time) always comes up, and now I just want to say Ee Sala Cup Namdu (The Cup is ours this time).” DC, led by Meg Lanning, will rue the missed chance of bettering their runners-up position from WPL 2023, but she admitted that her team was outplayed on the day.

Lanning said, “Disappointing to not get it done tonight. We played some good cricket through the tournament. But it was about not playing well on the day. Congratulations to RCB, they outplayed us. But we can be proud of our efforts throughout.” On their batting collapse, she said, “It all happened relatively quickly, as it tends to do. Crazy things happen, and every game has been pretty close. You can never sort of rest and think it is under control because there are so many good teams.

“They (RCB) deserved the win.”

Over the last few years, the Ee Sala Cup Namde (The Cup is ours this time) slogan of Royal Challengers Bangalore has remained the pet troll of social media army. But not anymore after this Sunday! The RCB have finally managed to bring one trophy home, when they defeated Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) final by eight wickets here at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. RCB off-spinner Shreyanka Patil, who ended up as the highest wicket-taker in WPL with 13 scalps, shared that sentiment and relief after the triumph.

“They keep saying ‘Ee sala cup namde’ and we got it. That’s it guys, it is for the fans,” said Patil.

She lauded RCB women’s head coach Luke Williams for keeping the dressing room calm.

“Day in and day out we put our hard work. We felt like family. We did not know Luke much. During the last game that we won against Mumbai, he had tears. We are looking forward to continuing this,” she added.

The talismanic Elysse Perry topped the run-makers’ chart in this WPL with 347 runs, and the Australian all-rounder said the support for the teams throughout the event was very heartening.

“Pretty bonkers, to be honest. It’s another level for us – the support for all the teams has been phenomenal and it’s been unbelievable,” she said.

Perry praised spinner Shreyanka and her compatriot Sophie Molineux for changing the complexion of the match after DC raced to 64 for no loss.

“She turned the match on its head. The rest of the spinners backed her up.

“Shreyanka is such a young player and she has got the world at her feet. It was a special performance,” said Perry.
