The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), post a meeting of the national selection committee on Tuesday, revealed the Indian Shotgun team for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Senior trap shooter Prithviraj Tondaiman has made the cut in the men’s Trap, while Rajeshwari Kumari will take aim in the women’s Trap. Anantjeet Singh Naruka will be India’s sole men’s Skeet shooter while Raiza Dhillon and Maheshwari Chauhan in women’s Skeet, complete the five quota places that the Shotgun squad had earned.

Maheshwari and Anantjeet will also feature as the sole Indian pair in the Skeet Mixed Team event, which is making a debut at the Paris Games. Incidentally, all five named will also be competing in their first Olympic Games.

K. Sultan Singh, Secretary General, NRAI, said after the meeting, “There was intense competition for places and things could have changed in case some Shooters medalled at the recently concluded Lonato World Cup. But we believe that we have a great Shotgun team, which has won the highest ever spots for India at any Games and certainly a second Olympic medal in the discipline looks a strong possibility.”

He also revealed that the name of women’s Trap shooter Shreyasi Singh had also been approved by the committee and that the NRAI had written to the ISSF (International Shooting Sport Body) for a quota swap. In this situation, her name could only be published post receiving necessary approvals from the ISSF.

Jaspal Rana Slams NRAI For Sending Olympic-Bound Shooters To Munich WC https://artifex.news/jaspal-rana-slams-nrai-for-sending-olympic-bound-shooters-to-munich-wc-5778788/ Thu, 30 May 2024 14:39:04 +0000 https://artifex.news/jaspal-rana-slams-nrai-for-sending-olympic-bound-shooters-to-munich-wc-5778788/ Read More “Jaspal Rana Slams NRAI For Sending Olympic-Bound Shooters To Munich WC” »

Former Indian shooter Jaspal Rana has slammed the National Rifle Association of India’s (NRAI) decision to send the Olympic-bound shooters for the World Cup in Munich, starting on Friday. In an exclusive interview with IANS, the Asian Games gold medallist shooter Rana questioned the selection of Olympic-bound shooters in the World Cup just before the quadrennial showpiece. The veteran said the event will not aid shooters for Olympic preparations as it is tough to sustain peak performance for such a long period.

“There will be a World Cup in Munich after the hectic one-month Olympic trials. No player wants to perform badly in the World Cup. If you’re at the peak, will you be at the peak after one month also? Which sports science centre will tell you that players can stay at peak for three months? You can’t stay at peak level for long,” Rana told IANS.

“The policy was wrong and when you’ve made the policy just stick to it. You’re not sticking to your policy. If there is no ranking and point system in the Munich World Cup, why are you delaying the names of the selected shooters for the Olympics? Even if you have to adjust one to two players, then reveal the rest of the players so that they can start their preparations,” he added.

After competing at the Munich World Cup, the team will proceed to a camp in France before heading back for a two-week break at home. They will then assemble for a camp in Bhopal, before departing for the Olympic Games.

The 47-year-old further said that India should have replicated the approach opted by other countries including China and the USA, who have sent their second-string squad for the World Cup in Germany.

“Other countries have sent their B or C category squad for the World Cup. Very less Olympic-bound shooters will participate in it. This is not an opportunity for the Olympic team,” Rana asserted.

With less than two months left for the coveted Games to begin in Paris, there is still no clarity on India’s shooting squad for the event.

“I’ve failed to understand that if NRAI doesn’t have the president, chairman of the selection committee and policy-making committee, then how they are selecting the team? It could be one of the reasons that the chairman of the NRAI selection committee is not there, that’s why they’re delaying the announcement,” he said.

Despite the multiple challenges, Rana is hopeful of better results from Indian shooters in Paris.

“Yes, we were well prepared last time. This time too, our preparations are pretty well. The only thing that went wrong last time was the postponement of the Games due to Covid-19. Our team was at its peak at the time of the Olympics (as per the original schedule in 2020). After that due to a lot of problems, we couldn’t manage it properly.

“I’m quite positive,” Rana said on India’s medal chances in the Paris Olympics.

While Sri Karthik Sabari Raj topped the men’s air rifle with a score of 631.6, Ramita Jindal was the star of the day, posting a scintillating 636.4 (0.1 more than the existing world record set by China’s Han Jiayu at the Baku World Cup earlier this month) to top the women’s air rifle.

Ramita’s effort meant that she was now second in the overall calculations, just 0.1 behind Olympian Elavenil Valarivan, whose score of 633.0 has taken her to the top of the standings.

Ramita at the start of the day was in the fourth position. Mehuli Ghosh (633.1) was second, while Nancy (630.6) and Tilottama Sen (628.8) were fourth and fifth respectively.

In the men’s air rifle, the results had no bearing on the standings as Sandeep Singh (fourth with 628.3) and Arjun Babuta (fifth with 624.7) maintained their top two positions in the calculations.

Manu Bhaker confidently topped the women’s 10m air pistol standings, finishing on top of the trial 4 qualification round with a score of 581.

Surbhi Rao (577) was second while Palak (572) was third. Rhythm Sangwan was fourth on the same score as Palak’s but lost out on inner 10s while Esha Singh was fifth with 572.

The results in air pistol meant that in the present calculations, Manu and Rhythm are 1-2 in the women’s air pistol while Sarabjot and Arjun have the top two slots in the men’s event.

Esha Singh and Anish Bhanwala registered their second Olympic Selection Trial wins in the women’s 25m pistol and men’s 25m rapid-fire pistol (RFP) respectively on Sunday. While Anish had won the first trial in the same event in Delhi, Esha had claimed the second trial in the women’s 10m air pistol, also at the Karni Singh range in Delhi. At the M.P. State Shooting Academy (MPSSA) ranges, Esha notched her first win in women’s 25m pistol trial, shooting 43 in the finals. Her score was a point more than the world record set by Korean Kim Yeji at the Baku World Cup earlier this month.

Manu Bhaker came second with 40 hits while Rhythm Sangwan picked up the final podium place, bowing out ahead of the 10th and final series with a score of 33. Simranpreet Kaur Brar and Abhidnya Patil were fourth and fifth respectively.

In the men’s RFP final, Anish seemed to be in a league of his own, bossing the five-man finals field with three perfect series of five hits in the beginning. He missed just four to finish with 36 hits for the win.

Vijayveer Sidhu did stutter in the beginning, but eventually, held his own to come in second with 31 hits. Ankur Goel was third with 19, while Adarsh Singh and Bhavesh Shekhawat came fourth and fifth respectively.

All 10 shooters will come back on Monday for the fourth trial (T4) and final match in both the events at the Olympic Selection Trials.

On average after the first three trials, Manu comfortably leads Esha Singh at the top in the women’s sport pistol while Anish is well ahead of second-placed Vijayveer in the men’s RFP.

Shooter Maheshwari Chauhan on Sunday sealed India’s 21st quota place for the Paris Olympics by winning a silver medal in the women’s skeet event on the concluding day of the ISSF Final Olympic Qualification Championship Shotgun in Doha. Maheshwari, competing in her maiden ISSF Final, lost 3-4 to Chile’s Francisca Crovetto Chadid in a shoot-off for gold, after both were tied at 54 hits in the 60-shot final.

It is India’s second Paris quota place in the women’s skeet.

“I am thrilled. There has been a lot of hard work over the years to get here. I am a bit bummed about the shoot-off, but overall, it has been very satisfying,” said Maheshwari after the final.

The day began with the Indian on top of the qualification pile, but a final round score of 23 meant she would qualify for the top-six final in fourth position. Her tally of 121, however, did give her the new national record.

Given Chadid had already secured a quota place in earlier competitions and China’s Jiang Yiting, the sixth qualifier, was ineligible as her nation had already exhausted their quotas in the event, Maheshwari’s fight was with three others (Kazakhstan’s Assem Orybay, Azerbaijan’s Rigina Meftakhetdinova and the top qualifier Sweden’s Victoria Larsson).

At the first elimination stage (after 20 shots), the Indian was in second place behind Chadid, having missed two targets.

Orynbay the Kazakh, was first to bow out with five misses in the first 20 targets. The quota was confirmed after Rigina bowed out next, having missed five in 30. Victoria of Sweden would claim the other available quota.

That probably calmed the nerves with Maheshwari getting stronger as the final progressed, catching up with the leader after 50 shots. Both had missed five at that stage.

Maheshwari then had three chances to win gold, but it was not to be and she missed her double entirely in the third shoot-off round to hand Chadid the gold. PTI AT AM AT AM AM

Manu Bhaker dished out an excellent performance to dominate the women’s 25m pistol qualification, eclipsing the world record score by a good six points while Anish Bhanwala won the men’s 25m rapid-fire pistol Olympics Selection (OST) Trials 1 in New Delhi on Saturday. Olympian Manu topped the women’s 25m pistol qualification at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range. Manu was all class in the women’s final, her scores in the 10 series of five rapid-fire shots read 4,4,5,5,5,5,4,5,5 and 5.

When Esha Singh was first eliminated on 23 after the seventh series, Manu was already on 32, six ahead of Rhythm Sangwan and Abhidnya, who were tied at that stage.

Esha, however, will still lead the women’s 25m pistol OST at the end of it, thanks to her 585 in qualifying, which helped her top the five-woman field on Friday.

Manu will be just behind her in second with Simranpreet, Abhidnya and Rhythm completing the order.

Anish also stamped his class in the men’s RFP by finishing with 33 hits, a clear six ahead of Vijayveer Sidhu, who was second. Adarsh Singh took the third spot with 23 hits.

Bhavesh Shekhawat, after topping the qualifications, finished fourth with 18 while Ankur Goel was first to exit with 10 hits to his name at the stage.

Legendary pistol marksman Jaspal Rana has expressed grave concerns over the delay in naming the Indian shooting contingent for the Paris Olympics, saying it will leave the selected shooters with little time for the final phase of preparations. Several countries, including the US and Italy, and many European powerhouses have announced their squads and their shooters are in the final phase of fine-tuning their skills and programs for the Olympics, even as India commenced its nearly month-long exercise on Friday.

The top-five ranked shooters in pistol and rifle category will undergo four trials — April 19-27 (New Delhi, trial 1 & 2) and May 10-19 (Bhopal, trial 3 & 4) — and the selection for Paris will be done after that, leaving precious little time for the last phase of training.

The Paris Olympics will commence on July 26.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has completed the trials in shotgun events, but they are yet to announce the squad in the hope that a few more shooters might secure Paris quotas in the Final Olympic Qualification Championship, which started in Doha on Friday.

“We are not in the same category of training and preparation as other people are getting around the world. They (strong countries in shooting sport) have already selected their teams and started their training and we are behind schedule,” said Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee shooter Rana in harsh comments against the NRAI’s policy.

“Nobody knows so far who is going and who is not going. That puts a lot of pressure on the players who have won quota places, while those who have not won the quota places there is a lot less pressure,” added the four-time Asian Games gold-medallist, who is currently the personal coach of Olympian Manu Bhaker.

In shooting sport, shooters win quota places for the country and the federation decides the contingent based on their performance in trials, national and international competitions.

Rana also flayed the ongoing trials at the Karni Singh Ranges, saying he had never seen a competition where only five shooters per event were short-listed.

As per the ISSF rules, eight shooters qualify for the finals in pistol and rifle events, barring men’s 25m rapid-fire, where six make it to medal round.

“Well, I have never seen five shooters (competing) in (the final), so I don’t know (what is happening). I never shot like that in my life. I’m seeing five shooters competing for the first time.

“At least, three more shooters should have been there. They should have at least completed the number of shooters in the finals… perhaps added three ‘zero’ shooters. They (NRAI) should have considered including zero shooters (to complete the ISSF requirement),” he added.

‘Zero’ shooters are not in contention for medals or quota places but complete the minimum requirements in a competition.

“Yes, I’ll be targeted for saying this, but I think there should have been three more shooters (as per the ISSF requirement). There are a lot of things that we can complain about, there are a lot of things which can be improved. But whatever is there is there (in front of everyone), and the shooters have to be ready for anything,” he added.

Jaspal felt a series of four trials was a bit too much and gave little time in between to rest and recover.

In case of Manu and Asian Games gold-medallist Esha Singh, they will have to appear in eight trials as the duo is in contention in 10m air pistol and 25m rapid-fire event. That puts added pressure on their physical and mental well-being over a duration of a month.

“My personal view is shooters should be ready for anything, but honestly this is too much. They (federation) could have have used some of the scores in (national and internationals) competitions as trial scores. You (NRAI) have all the options, provided you want to do it,” he said.

Asked if this was the ideal situation for shooters to de-stress, when not even two days are there between trials, he said, “There is no time (to de-stress). There is not good enough time even between the trials in Delhi and Bhopal.”
