Ex Pakistan Cricketer Recalls MS Dhoni’s Stunning Response When He Was Asked To Drop Virat Kohli

Former Pakistan cricketer Umar Akmal has reminisced about an incident where Virat Kohli was backed heavily by former India captain MS Dhoni despite his poor form. Akmal narrated the incident in the context of Kohli’s poor form at the T20 World Cup 2024. After scoring just 75 runs all tournament, Kohli came back with vengeance in the T20 World Cup final, scoring a 59-ball 76 against South Africa, as India lifted the trophy for the second time. Kohli also announced his T20I retirement after the game.

Speaking to Pakistan-based news channel Geo News on their show ‘Haarna Mana Hay‘, Akmal spoke of an incident from Pakistan’s tour of India in 2012-13. Akmal said that Dhoni had refused to play upon being asked to be dropped from the squad.

“I was having dinner with MS Dhoni in 2013. Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and Shoaib Malik were also present. Virat Kohli was going through a similar phase. The Team India manager walked up to Dhoni and asked him to drop Virat Kohli from the final ODI of the series,” recalled Akmal.

“Dhoni replied saying, ‘I haven’t gone home for six months. Why don’t you book my tickets too along with Virat’s?’ Then the manager allowed him to play whoever he wanted,” continued Akmal.

Dhoni’s sharp response to the question of dropping Kohli had left the Pakistan wicket-keeper batsman shocked. Akmal said that Dhoni had a simple reason.

“Virat is our best batter. Why should we drop him if he fails for 3-4 games?” Akmal recalled Dhoni telling him.

Akmal’s incident gives further proof of the bond shared by MS Dhoni and Kohli. Dhoni would hand over Test match captaincy to Kohli less than two years later.

Kohli won his first T20 World Cup title on Saturday, the first since the inaugural 2007 edition when Dhoni had guided a young Indian team to their maiden title.

Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria slammed Wasim Akram and other ex-Pakistan cricketers who criticised the current Pakistan team. Kaneria said that instead of criticising from the outside, Akram and other cricketers should instead come and help the side. Pakistan were knocked out of the 2024 T20 World Cup at the group stage, after losses to India and the USA. Kaneria’s reaction comes after Wasim Akram had put out a public rant on social media, demanding a new team be formed for Pakistan.

“Wasim Akram and other people can only preach from the outside. Why don’t they come help the Pakistan side?” asked Kaneria. “Why did Wasim Akram not pose the question about Mohammad Amir‘s selection immediately?” Kaneria told Sports Now.

“Shoaib Malik is a better player than these guys (the current squad),” he added.

The former leg-spinner said that Pakistan’s preparations leading up to the 2024 T20 World Cup had not been up to the mark. He raised special concern over the selections of Mohammad Amir and Azam Khan.

“They (Pakistan) should’ve picked 20-22 players in the camp, and then picked the best 15,” said Kaneria. “Where were Mohammad Amir and Azam Khan six months ago?” blasted Kaneria.

Kaneria slammed the Pakistan team’s management of not being able to make firm decisions.

“They will wake up in the morning and say one thing, and then take a U-turn in the evening. They’re the masters of the U-turn,” said Kaneria.

“They’re egoistic and think they cannot make mistakes,” he added.

Kaneria also criticised the decision to hand back captaincy to Babar Azam, and suggested that he should bat at no. 3 in T20Is, letting Fakhar Zaman open the innings with Mohammad Rizwan.

Babar Azam scored 122 runs in four matches at the 2024 T20 World Cup, but at a strike rate of just 101.

In a talk show, she was asked about getting messages from cricketers.

“Did any single cricketer message you?” the anchor asked the actor on Green TV Entertainment.

“Aapko kiu lagta hai, single hone zaroori hai (Why do you think it is necessary for someone to be single)?” the actor replied. “I am not going to talk about that (incident regarding messages from cricketer).”

Then a range of names from Naseem Shah to Shoaib Malik were taken by the anchor, to which Nawal Saeed just kept smiling. She then referred to a previous show that she did where she talked about cricketers sending her messages. “The show was recorded during the World Cup. People thought I said it to get some publicity out of it. But it was nothing like that. I said the truth. I should not have said that. People can message you, it’s alright,” she said.

“Mujhe sirf ye lagta hai kicricketers should not be doing thing like that. Log jo hain na Actors se zyada log cricketers/sportsman ko idolise karte hai (I feel cricketers should not do that, as people idolise them even more than actors),” Nawal added.

The 25-year-old Nawal Saeed started her career in television. Since 2022, she has been working in movies too.

In January, Sania Mirza’s family confirmed that the Indian tennis icon and Shoaib Malik have separated, a day after Pakistani cricketer announced his third marriage with actor Sana Javed. Their split marked the end of a high-profile union that had generated huge interest among sports lovers from the two countries. The 41-year-old Malik then posted his wedding picture with Sana on social media platforms.

“Sania has always kept her personal life away from the public eye. However, today the need has arisen for her to share that Shoaib and she have been divorced for a few months now. She wishes Shoaib well for his new journey ahead!,” read the statement issued by Mirza’s family.

“At this sensitive period of her life, we would like to request all fans and well-wishers to refrain from indulging in any speculation and to respect her need for privacy,” the statement added.

The revelation came amid long-standing rumours and speculation surrounding the strained relationship between Malik and Mirza, who got married in April 2010 in the Indian player’s hometown of Hyderabad.

The rumours gained momentum when Malik recently unfollowed Mirza, 37, on Instagram, a move that further fuelled speculation about their marital discord.

They have a five-year-old son Izaan, who is currently living with Mirza.

Mirza, in an Instagram post, had alluded to personal struggles.

“Marriage is hard, Divorce is hard. Choose your hard. Obesity is hard. Being fit is hard, Choose your hard. being in debt is hard. Being financially disciplined is hard. Choose your hard,” she posted in an instagram story.

Former India tennis ace Sania Mirza has called for introspection on how women’s success is perceived in the society. The ex-India player, who got divorced from former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik a few months back, reflected on the gender discrimination she feels is still prevalent in the society. Sania opened up while reacting to an advertisement that showed how a society devalues a woman’s success. The ad also portrayed the feelings of an independent woman during the struggle she has to go through due to the social stigma.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) began on February 17. Several high-profile international cricketers have pulled out of theÂ PakistanÂ SuperÂ LeagueÂ (PSL) due to the overlapping of dates with other franchise-based tournaments and many cricket boards denying permission to their players to compete in domestic T20 competitions.Â All the six franchises have been hit hard with several players opting for the Bangladesh PremierÂ League, ILT20 and SA20Â leagues.

PSL side Multan Sultans have lost several players they had initially signed up for the upcoming season, with England pace bowler Reece Topley being the latest to pull out due to an injury.

Talking about the tournament, a PSL franchise owner has asked theÂ PakistanÂ Cricket Board (PCB) to revisit the tournament window, as it is not possible to get big players when threeÂ leagues are happening on after the other.

“The SA20 ended recently and the ILT20 concludes on the day the PSL begins, so it is getting difficult to sign big players now,” he said on condition of anonymity.

He also pointed out that January-February is a busy season for international cricket series. Sri Lanka are playing a series against Afghanistan, South Africa are in the middle of a two-Test series against New Zealand while West Indies are playing a series against Australia.

“There is an acute need to change the PSL window, else it will lose its charm if we don’t get big overseas names,” he added.

Two wins in three matches in the ICC Cricket World Cup2023 campaign, but Pakistan skipper Babar Azam is facing extreme critcism from some of his former teammates. Shoaib Malik, one of the greats of Pakistan cricket, has once again adviced Babar to quit captaincy and focus only on his batting. Malik’s suggestion came in after Pakistan lost to arch-rivals India in the league stage of the World Cup on Saturday. Not just Malik, but some of the other former Pakistan cricketers and fans have also questioned Babar’s captaincy after the loss.

“Look, I will give you my honest opinion on this. I have already said this in previous interviews that Babar should leave captaincy, it is just my opinion but there’s a lot of homework behind it. Babar, as a player, can do wonders for himself as well as the team,” the former Pakistan skipper said on A-Sports.

“It is my personal opinion and that is not because we lost the game today (against India) or we lost by a big margin, no it (my opinion) is not built on that,” he said.

Malik feels Babar doesn’t think ‘out of the box’ as a captain which is a big problem with respect to his leadership skills. He recommended the name of Shaheen Shah Afridi as Pakistan’s skipper of Babar does decide to step down.

“I think that Babar, as a leader, doesn’t think out of the box. One shouldn’t mix his leadership with his batting skills as they both are different. He has been a captain for a long time now, but he hasn’t been able to improve himself,” the 41-year-old asserted.

“Shaheen Afridi should become captain in white ball cricket in case Babar Azam resigns. He has done an attacking captaincy for Lahore Qalandars,” he concluded.
