Captain Ben Stokes told England not to be afraid of Australia as selectors kept their options open Wednesday by naming off-spinner Shoaib Bashir in a 12-man squad for the first Test.

Four frontline pace bowlers were also included for the Ashes opener in Perth on Friday — Mark Wood, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse, who was preferred to Josh Tongue.

Ollie Pope, as expected, kept his place at number three ahead of Jacob Bethell.

Veteran pace ace Wood unleashed a fiery spell in the nets on Tuesday after an injury scare last week to prove his fitness, with selectors likely waiting until the last minute to make a call on whether he plays.

But with Perth Stadium head curator Isaac McDonald predicting a typically fast and bouncy wicket, it would favour England opting for an all-out speed blitz.

Should that be the call, Stokes would offer support and Joe Root a part-time spin option.

“Jofra and Woody are amazing bowlers and they’ll be huge for us this series,” Atkinson told reporters, adding that he was happy to play a support role.

“It’s been like that a bit throughout my career so far, sort of in the background, and I don’t mind at all.”

‘Look it in the eyes’

Wood, Root, Stokes, Pope and opener Zak Crawley are the only players in the squad to have experienced Ashes cricket in Australia before.

It raises the prospect of some of the newcomers being overawed by the occasion.

Stokes said he had emphasised how big the series was and they should embrace it.

“I think if we were to come out and sort of not accept that and go, ‘Oh nah, it’s just another series’, then we’d only be lying to ourselves and lying to the fact of what the series is,” he told Sky Sports before the squad was announced.

“Facing what that feels like, looking it in the eyes, taking it on and not being afraid of the challenge that we have ahead of us,” he added of his advice to the novices.

England have not won a series in Australia since 2010-11. Since then they have lost 13 Tests and drawn two Down Under.

Atkinson said not having played in Australia could actually work in his favour.

“So there are no scars for me. For some others, I wouldn’t speak for them, but history would say it’s probably a good thing,” he said.

Australia head into the opening Test on the backfoot with pace spearheads Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood both out injured, leaving 100-Test veteran Mitchell Starc to shoulder a major burden.

He will be joined by fellow quick Scott Boland and spin king Nathan Lyon, with seamer Brendan Doggett likely to be handed a debut ahead of Michael Neser.

“Sadly, injuries in fast bowling happen,” Starc said. “But good to see the depth in the squad.

“We know what Scotty Boland can do, ‘Doggie’s’ coming off a hot streak at the moment and ‘Nes’ has been around for a while.”

England squad: Ben Stokes (capt) Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Mark Wood

That feeling will stay with me forever: England spinner Bashir on Siraj’s dismissal at Lord’s https://artifex.news/article69949250-ece/ Mon, 18 Aug 2025 22:20:00 +0000 https://artifex.news/article69949250-ece/ Read More “That feeling will stay with me forever: England spinner Bashir on Siraj’s dismissal at Lord’s” »

Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir believes that the joy he felt after dismissing India’s Mohammed Siraj to seal the Lord’s Test in favour England will stay with him “forever” and was also generous enough to give a slice of credit to former teammate Moeen Ali for advising him to bowl the carrom ball.

The 21-year-old, who was ruled out of the remainder of the five-Test series after suffering a fracture on his little finger at the Lord’s, had already dismissed Siraj with the carrom ball in the second Test at Edgbaston.

With Ravindra Jadeja (61 not out) threatening to take India home at London, skipper Ben Stokes summoned Bashir for the final act, and the youngster did not disappoint, ousting Siraj with a delivery that bounced and turned viciously.

“I met Moeen Ali for the first time at Edgbaston and we spoke a lot,” Bashir told The Sunday Times. “Mo encouraged me to bowl the carrom ball. He’s someone I’ve always looked up to and for him to say, ‘Back yourself to do it,’ meant a lot.”

Bashir said he had been working on the variation for some time but only gained the confidence to use it after Moeen was invited to England’s training camp.

“I just wanted to show that I’ve got that strength in me. I bowled it a few times and it came out nicely. I got Siraj out with it [stumped in the first innings], with a really slow ball — it was only about 43 to 44mph.

“Since Edgbaston, I’ve been in touch with Mo a fair few times. He’s a legend and someone I look up to massively, especially being an off spinner in England, which is not an easy job,” he added.

Chasing 193, India were reeling at 112/8 on the final afternoon, but Jadeja stood firm first with Jasprit Bumrah (5 off 54 balls) and then with Siraj, who resisted 29 deliveries before Bashir, bowling with his left-hand heavily strapped, found the breakthrough.

The delivery, which Siraj played down onto the pitch in front of the crease, spun back and rattled the base of his leg stump, sparking wild celebrations in England camp.

“We were creating chances, but just couldn’t get that wicket. I really wanted to get out there. Stokesy knew and gave me the go-ahead when he was on the field and I was on the bench. My left hand felt pretty good when I was bowling. I’m just glad I could make a difference.”

“We got Joe Root to come into silly point to put pressure on Siraj, and I just tried to put as many revs on that ball as I could. Luckily it popped from a length and when it hit his bat (and down into the ground), everyone was just looking, ‘Where is it?’”

Bashir said the moment will stay with him forever.

“From my angle I couldn’t really see [the bail coming off]. My reaction was off a lot of other peoples’ reaction. I was just relieved. That feeling will stay with me forever — at the home of cricket in front of a packed crowd. It doesn’t get better.”

Bashir had injured his non-bowling hand trying to take a return catch off Jadeja in India’s first innings. He later underwent surgery, with two pins inserted in his finger as he’s still awaiting clearance five weeks on.

Despite the pain, the spinner was involved in a gritty seven-run partnership with Jofra Archer, scoring two off nine balls in a match England eventually won by 22 runs.

“It [the injury] happened, I came off the field and went for a scan,” he recalled. “I knew it was pretty bad at that point, but I had plenty of pain-killers. There was no real conversation about me batting.

“My first ball from [Jasprit] Bumrah was a bouncer and the next ball a yorker, and it was one of those where the vibrations went right up through your hands. But I was always going to bat, even if it was only to add five-to-ten runs. In the grand scheme of things, they might matter.”

Bashir missed the remainder of the series as India clawed back to level it 2-2. His replacement Liam Dawson went wicketless in 47 overs at Old Trafford as India batted out a draw at 427/6 declared.

“It looked like the wicket flattened out and not much was happening. Even the Indian spinners struggled,” said Bashir, who took 10 wickets at 54.1.

For Indian spinners, Jadeja took seven wickets at 72.4 and Washington Sundar seven scalps at 38.6.

“It was an incredible series to be part of. I learnt a lot playing against some of the best players in the world. I was quite happy with my performances,” he added.

Sajid Khan with Saud Shakeel© AFP

Pakistan’s experienced off-spinner Sajid Khan found a unique way to play all sorts of tricks on England players during the ongoing third Test in Rawalpindi. From twirling his moustache to thumping his thigh, Sajid found another way to get under the skin of England bowlers by using bilingualism to his advantage. While Sajid’s success with the ball comes down to his angle of spin and the flight of the delivery, his fortune with the bat is a different story.

On the fourth ball of the 86th over, Sajid had a conversation with vice-captain Saud Shakeel. The duo didn’t mind if the stump mic had caught the conversation they had before Sajid went on to take the strike.

Sajid danced around on the crease and went on to launch the ball over midwicket into the Javed Miandad stand. The 31-year-old revealed that the intended audience of their conversation were Pakistan-origin spinners, Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir.

“We were only doing that [speaking loudly in Urdu] to deceive the bowlers. Rehan and Shoaib understand Urdu, so to fool them, we wanted them to hear we were only looking for the single. When we did that, they brought the field up, and the bowlers flighted it. Saud told me once they do, no half measures: just go for the big shot as hard as you can,” Sajid said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

In the next over that Bashir bowled, Sajid hammered two sixes and a four in a similar fashion by targeting the midwicket region. He went unbeaten with a swashbuckling knock of run-a-ball 48, which propelled Pakistan to 344.

Rehan acknowledged the quality of Sajid’s impressive outing with the bat but refuted his comments about misleading him with his conversation in Urdu.

“He didn’t fool me at all. He just said it for the media. I didn’t even hear him. He said something like he’s going to run down this ball, and I knew he was going to try and scoop me, and it didn’t really work. I think he batted well, and he hit some big blows, but he didn’t really fool me or Bash,” Rehan said with a smile.

England’s left-arm spinner Jack Leach admitted that he feared about his international career being over after being left out of the home summer games. Leach was out of action since January due to a knee injury sustained during the first Test against India in Hyderabad. But Leach, 33, was recalled into England’s Test team for their ongoing tour of Pakistan, where he’s picked 14 wickets in two games at Multan. “After a long time out with injury, I felt maybe that might be it, even though I knew this tour was the other side of the summer.”

“At that point, it was very much about me getting back to my best and enjoying my cricket, and being injury-free for a good amount of time,” said Leach to BBC Sport ahead of the series decider at Rawalpindi.

In his absence, off-spinner Shoaib Bashir has become a regular player with the England Test team.

“If you’re not able to stay fit, then other people come in and do well, and Bash certainly did that. A lot of it doesn’t need to be explained. I know what the situation was. It was just about me getting back to fitness. Then, from that, you take wickets and build confidence. That’s what I went away and did,” added Leach.

Talking about his relationship with Bashir, also a fellow Somerset player in domestic cricket, Leach remarked, “We’ve got a really good relationship. Bash has got off to an amazing start. His talent is amazing. He has got such a high ceiling and he’s on the way to that. That’s exciting for English cricket.”

“It might be different at Somerset next year. Who knows? For me, it’s quite a fluid thing. Those are things I can’t control. Somerset and England are the teams I’ve been playing for. If they want to pick me, then I’ll give everything to them. That’s all I want to focus on.”

Leach, who’s picked 140 wickets in 38 Tests, signed off by saying England are yet to get a look at the pitch in Rawalpindi. “I don’t know what to expect. I haven’t seen anything. We’ll go to training tomorrow, have a look at it. I feel quite clear about what I’m doing. That doesn’t really change depending on the wicket.”

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has labelled the current Pakistan side as the “worst” he has seen in history. Vaughan’s remark came after Pakistan became the first team to lose a Test after scoring 550 or more runs in the first innings. Despite posting 556 runs in the first innings, England outbatted them in Multan to declare on 823/7. The hosts collapsed for a meagre 220 in the second innings, allowing England to seal the match by an innings and 47 runs.

On the contrary, Vaughan was in awe of England’s approach, who score well over five runs per over in the first innings. He also lauded England for its disciplined bowling, underlining the role-clarity.

“This is the worst Pakistan side I can remember. But to make 823 for seven at 5.5 runs an over, while taking few risks and looking in total control, is very special. The most impressive thing for me was the way the bowling attack combined. You could tell what everyone’s role was. And they stuck to their task gallantly and were right up for the challenge, which is exactly what Brendon McCullum wants to see,” Vaugan wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

The only area of concern for England, according to Vaughan, was about Shoaib Bashir being their first choice spinner over Jack Leach, especially after the latter sparked Pakistan’s collapse in the second innings.

“The one selection point I was not sure about at the start of the summer was opting for Shoaib Bashir over Leach as the front-line spinner. I can see Bashir’s potential, but Leach outbowled him in Multan, and had a very good season for Somerset. I am a bit old school with spin bowling. Your finger spinner just needs to bowl, bowl, bowl. That is the way to learn, get used to conditions, make subtle variations to your release point, and angle of attack. Bashir just has not bowled that much this summer,” he added.

Pakistan will now look to bounce in the series with the second Test starting on October 15.

Geoffrey Boycott, the former England opener, has advised young off-spinner Shoaib Bashir to learn from Nathan Lyon’s bowling videos, as he believes the Australia veteran is the most superior off-spinner in the cricketing world. In seven Tests since his debut on this year’s tour of India, Bashir has picked 29 wickets, but went wicketless in second innings of series opener against Sri Lanka at Manchester, as the batters used their feet to unsettle his lines and lengths. “Shoaib Bashir has talent and can get better. He is tall with a fluid high action that will create occasional bounce on hard pitches together with a natural loop. My impression is he is not clear on what line he should be bowling so he tries all sorts of deliveries searching for a wicket.

“At the moment the best off-spinner in world cricket by a long way is Nathan Lyon, with 530 wickets at 30 runs each. My advice would be go and look at film of Lyon bowling. He gets close to the stumps so he can find a touch of drift away from the batsman with his action but he aims to pitch outside off stump to spin back and hit the stumps.

“His straight-on ball brings slip in play and he has a short square leg for the bat/pad nick. That way he can beat right-handers inside and outside of the bat. All great bowlers have to match line with length. Line is good, but if too short or too full then it is hittable. Great length but wrong line, such as being too straight, gives easy runs on the leg side,” wrote Boycott in his column for The Telegraph.

He also thinks Bashir must develop a stock ball to use in Test cricket to keep the batters quiet. “I think Shoaib has to learn that he can’t always go searching for wickets, admirable as that is, because it can become expensive.

“Sometimes when two opposition batsmen get set on a flat batting pitch the seamers are given the best end and the spinner the worst end. They are asked to bowl uphill or against the wind to do a holding job, keeping the batsmen quiet and runs to a minimum. That is why he needs a good stock ball.”

England now have a 1-0 lead in the three-match series against Sri Lanka and will play the second Test at Lord’s on August 29, followed by the series-ending game at The Oval on September 6.
