Legendary Pakistan bowler Shoaib Akhtar has slammed the England cricket team’s decision to elect to bowl after winning the toss against India in the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final. India piled up 171 runs in their 20 overs, a total that always seemed like an uphill climb for the English batters. Ultimately, England fell short by a whopping 68 runs. After the game, Akhtar wondered what had inspired England to choose to bowl, given the might and variety of India’s bowling lineup.

“Someone please tell me which Einstein adviced England to bat second. What scientist do they have?” questioned a puzzled Akhtar after the game on his YouTube channel.

“Against a team that has Axar Patel, a match-winner like Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja. Then they have Jasprit Bumrah. So who advised you to win the toss and bowl?” continued Akhtar.

England’s batting unit could not deal with the firepower of India’s bowling. Only three batters crossed the 20-run mark, and one more managed to hit double digits.

Axar Patel was the star of the show, dismantling the English top order with three wickets (3/23 in 4 overs). Spin partner Kuldeep Yadav also picked up three wickets, while Bumrah added two wickets to his tally.

However, Shoaib Akhtar reserved more praise for India’s batting. Courtesy of a half-century by Rohit Sharma, and sizeable efforts from Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, India reached a total of 171/7 in 20 overs.

Rohit accelerated early, scoring a 39-ball 57 on a tough Guyana pitch. Suryakumar Yadav made 47 off 36, and Hardik contributed a quickfire 13-ball 23, with two sixes.

“I’m very happy to see India win,” said Akhtar. “They have a good range of batting. There are no batsmen like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya,” said Akhtar.

India will take on South Africa in the 2024 T20 World Cup Final in Barbados on June 29. Both sides are yet to lose a game so far in the tournament.

Few days back, former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar had suggested that the team might have to play qualifiers to get into the main draw of the next T20 World Cup in 2026. Akhtar’s remark came after Pakistan were stunned by USA in a group game of the ongoing addition. He had suggested that Pakistan must beat India to get out of the group stage, or else they could be forced to take part in the 2026 T20 World Cup qualifiers. However, Pakistan also lost to India, failing to get out of the group stage of the tournament.

Akhtar’s claim, however, has been proven wrong as Pakistan’s secured a direct entry for the tournament in 2026, set to be joint-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

How Pakistan qualified T20 World Cup 2026?

As per ICC rules, 12 out of the 20 participating teams will gain automatic entry for the event in 2026. While India and Sri Lanka got direct entry as co-hosts, teams who have qualified for the Super 8 stage in the ongoing edition have also managed to secure their respective berths.

India, Sri Lanka, Australia, England, West Indies, Afghanistan, South Africa, Bangladesh and USA have already secured direct qualification for the group stage.

In addition, the three remaining automatic slots have been on the basis of the ICC Men’s T20I rankings as of June 30, 2024.

As a result, New Zealand, Ireland, and most importantly Pakistan have also qualified for the event.

The remaining eight slots will be determined through regional qualifiers.

Meanwhile, the Super 8 stage of the ongoing edition will kick off from Wednesday, June 19.

The top two teams from the groups will advance to the semi-finals of the tournament.

Here’s how the two Super 8 groups look like:

Group 1: India (A1), Australia (B2), Afghanistan (C1) and Bangladesh (D2)

Group 2: England (B1), USA (A2), West Indies (C2), South Africa (D1)

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup journey came to a disappointing conclusion on Friday, with the team failing to qualify for the Super 8 stage of the tournament. Pakistan’s elimination came after the United States of America’s game against Ireland was washed out due to rain. USA were awarded a point which was enough to take them to the Super 8 stage in their debut appearance in the tournament. Following Pakistan’s shock exit, former pacer Shoaib Akhtar expressed his disappointment over the outcome.

Taking to X, Akhtar shared a one line post, saying: “Pakistan’s World Cup journey is over.”

Pakistan needed Ireland to beat USA heading into their final game of the group stage against the Irish.

However, a draw means that they can only reach four points. Meanwhile, USA ended group league campaign with five points from four games, joining India in the next round from Group A.

Pakistan went down to India in New York on Sunday in a close game, failing to chase a target of 120. Before that, in their opening game in Dallas, they suffered a shock Super Over loss to USA.

The back-to-back defeats meant Pakistan’s chances of advancing to the Super Eight were already out of their own hands. Once again, they had to rely on other results going their way.

However, heavy rain and flooding in Fort Lauderdale over the past few days shattered their hopes of advancing through to the next round.

The USA began the tournament with a convincing win over Canada chasing nearly 200 runs, shocked Pakistan in one of T20 World Cup’s greatest upsets, and then gave formidable title contenders India a run for their money, but the starting point of the team’s upsurge in the game was the morale-boosting T20I series victory over Bangladesh just prior to the showpiece.

The US team comprises eight cricketers of Indian descent, most of them on temporary H1-B visas that allow companies to hire overseas employees, who are trying to revive the sport 180 years after the country hosted the first-ever international cricket match, between USA and Canada at the St George’s Cricket Club in New York way back in 1844, 33 years before England and Australia played in their first Test match.

USA’s passage to the next round also sealed their place in the group stage of the 2026 edition.

Andrew Balbirnie emerged as the hero for Ireland with a brilliant 77, helping his side to the team’s first victory over Pakistan in 17 years as they won the opening Twenty20 international by five wickets in Dublin on Friday. This is Ireland’s first win against Pakistan in T20Is. The opener’s influential knock was crucial as Ireland chased down the target of 183 with a ball to spare. Victory gave Ireland a 1-0 lead in a three-match series against a Pakistan side they will also face in the group stage of next month’s T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies. Reacting to what was just Ireland’s second win against Pakistan following their shock triumph at the 2007 50-over World Cup, Shoaib Akhtar and Junaid Khan were left fuming.

Pakistan skipper and star batsman Babar Azam top-scored for the tourists on Friday with 57 in a total of 182-6 that also featured Saim Ayub‘s 45. Former Pakistan stars, Akhtar and Junaid, shared strong reactions on social media to the defeat.

“We will get better when we will try to play good cricket. The players must think about the team and we will continue to lose if things stay like this,” said Kamran Akmal on his YouTube channel.

“I am seeing that players are prioritising personal goals which is not good for the side. The team management will soon identify this,” he added

“I didn’t watch the last over. (I) went to the tent and put a towel over my head,” said Balbirnie, who shared a third-wicket stand of 77 with Harry Tector, at the presentation ceremony.

“I felt it was my job to get the team over the line… Harry said if we could bat normally till the 13th over, we could get the runs. That was a partnership which set it up.”

Azam, meanwhile, absolved his bowlers of blame for the defeat.

“I think 190 would have been a par score,” he said.

“We lost in the fielding and batting. (I) don’t think we executed the plans. Few fielding lapses cost us.

“We attacked in the first six overs but didn’t finish well.”

Ireland needed 40 to win from the last four overs, with Abbas Afridi dismissing George Dockrell for 24.

Next over, with Ireland requiring another 28 from 17 balls, Shadab Khan gave Balbirnie a reprieve by failing to hold a tough chance.

Come the penultimate over, Ireland’s target was down to 19.

But Pakistan quick Shaheen Shah Afridi bowled Balbirnie with a low full toss to end the opener’s impressive 55-ball innings, which featured 10 fours and two sixes.

With Ireland needing 11 off the last over, Curtis Campher under-edged a boundary off Abbas and eventually sealed victory with a leg bye.

The teams meet again in Dublin on Sunday and Tuesday.

Growing up as cricket fans in the subcontinent, we’ve all come across tales of the fierce rivalry between India and Pakistan. From the days of Sunil Gavaskar and Javed Miandad to the iconic duels of batting great Sachin Tendulkar and express pacer Shoaib Akhtar, both teams have had some epic matchups over the years. However, the former players from both camps have also spoken about their bonds with each other off the field. Akhtar has often narrated tales of his bromance with several Indian players, including spinner Harbhajan Singh.

Speaking of bromance, Akhtar and Harbhajan recently caught up with each other in the UAE. Both former players are currently working as experts for the ongoing Abu Dhabi T10 League.

Fans were lucky to witness another moment of bromance between Harbhajan and Akhtar. In a video uploaded on the former pacer’s YouTube channel, Akhtar and Harbhajan can be seen having a sprint race, followed by a bit of banter.

“Everytime I post a video with Bhajji, the views are in millions. Aaj tu race haar gaya na, view badhwa diye (Since you lost the race, the views will increase),” Akhtar can be heard as saying.

“40 lakh views aane chahiye,” replies Harbhajan, to which Akhtar says: “40 lakh nahi, 4 crore (not 40 lakh, 4 crore).”

Akhtar’s career was cut-short by injuries. He hung up his boots after the 2011 World Cup in India, owing to knee related issues.

Akhtar, who made his international debut in 1997, took 178 wickets in 46 Tests, the last of which was against India at Bangalore in 2007. He bagged 247 wickets in 163 one-day internationals and also took 19 wickets in 15 T20Is.

Harbhajan, on the other hand, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in 2021.

The off-spinner was an integral part of the Indian team across formats in the 2000s and won the 2007 ICC WT20 and the 2011 ICC World Cup with the team under MS Dhoni‘s captaincy. Harbhajan shot to fame in 2001 as he played a stellar role in helping India beat Steve Waugh‘s all-conquering Australian side in a home Test series.

Harbhajan made his international debut as a 17-year-old against Australia in Bengaluru in March 1998. He would go on to pick up 417 wickets in 103 Test matches.

He also represented India in 236 ODIs, in which he picked up 269 wickets. He also picked up 25 wickets in 28 T20Is.

Legendary fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar vented out his frustration after Pakistan lost their World Cup game against Australia in Bengaluru on Friday. Akhtar said he was “thoroughly disappointed” with the lack of hunger and desire within the team. Pakistan captain Babar Azam failed to play a big knock once again, drawing criticism from all corners. He managed just 18 runs in 14 balls after getting off to a good start. Akhtar feels Babar needs to score against big teams to justify the “big player” tag.

“Babar Azam is a great player, but again, you need to play a great innings. You can’t make yourself a big name by not scoring against big teams. If you want to prove that you are a big player, you have to score runs in big games. You shouldn’t lose hope,” Akhtar said on his YouTube channel.

Leg-spinner Usama Mir dropped David Warner in the fifth over off Shaheen Afridi‘s delivery and Pakistan had to pay the price as Warner went on to smash a brilliant 163 off 124 balls.

Akhtar lashed out at the management, and questioned whether Pakistan really deserve to play in the semi-finals of the World Cup.

“To bring Iftikhar as the first change (in bowling), Usama Mir’s dropped catch, all this is beyond my understanding. What is the management thinking? Pakistan’s (semi-final) chances are looking grim. You still have to play England, New Zealand and South Africa. I have a question. Does this Pakistan team deserve to play in the semi-finals? Thoroughly disappointed,” he added.

Centuries from Warner and Mitchell Marsh (121) took Australia to a mammoth target of 367/9. In reply, Pakistan were bowled out on 305.

This was Pakistan’s second defeat in four games so far, having also lost to India last week.

Australia, on the other hand, are back on track after registering back-to-back wins. They had lost their first two games to India and South Africa, respectively.

Legendary Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was extremely critical of Babar Azam and Co after they missed multiple catches during the Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Australia on Friday. Pakistan dropped the catch of David Warner early and the veteran batter went on to hit a massive century to guide Australia to a mammoth total of 367. Warner stitched together a record opening partnership with Mitchell Marsh and it took a special five-wicket haul from Shaheen Afridi to restrict them to a total below 400.  Akhtar took to social media to point out that on a pitch that was providing assistance to bowlers, the fielders needed to hold on to the chances in order to give them a boost.

“As it is, you’re not able to create opportunities. Atleast grab the ones which batters are giving. Come on guys, you cant drop so many catches!!!!!!” Akhtar posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

When Usama Mir grassed a dolly catch off David Warner in the Cricket World Cup match in Bengaluru on Friday, he kept up Pakistan’s unwanted tradition of dropping catches against Australia.

Warner miscued a lofted shot off pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi in the fifth over but the ball sneaked through the hands of a confused Mir at mid-on.

Warner, 10 at the time, punished Pakistan by cracking his 21st ODI century, fifth in all World Cup matches, and went on to score 163 in a total of 367-9.

Warner’s drop continued Pakistan’s sloppiness in crucial Australia matches, starting at the 2015 World Cup.

In the quarter-final at Adelaide, Pakistan were defending a paltry 214-run target.

Australia were in a spot of bother at 83-3 when Rahat Ali grassed a simple catch off Shane Watson‘s miscued hook off pacer Wahab Riaz.

Watson recovered to hit 64 not out in Australia’s six-wicket win on the way to lifting the World Cup for the fifth time.

Four years later in Taunton, Asif Ali dropped Aaron Finch off Riaz in the slips with the opener on 37. Finch went on to score 82 in Australia’s 41-run win.

In the 2021 Twenty20 World Cup semi-final in Dubai, Pakistan’s Hasan Ali dropped Matthew Wade at deep mid-wicket when Australia needed 22 off the last two overs.

The Pakistan cricket team were completely outplayed by India in their Cricket World Cup 2023 match and it was followed by severe criticism from various former cricketers. Legendary fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar blasted Babar Azam and Co after the loss and said that in order to silence a massive crowd like that at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the team needs to have fire in their hearts. Now, his one-time teammate Danish Kaneria has responded to the post and asked Shoaib to help the team invoke the fire once again. “Aag thandi ho chuki hai. Wapas jalao Shoaib bhai (the fire has died down. Reignite it),” Kaneria posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Rohit Sharma‘s 86 and an inspired bowling display helped India hammer Pakistan by seven wickets in their high-profile World Cup clash at the 132,000-capacity Ahmedabad stadium on Saturday.

India bowled out Pakistan for 191 after their rivals collapsed from 155-2.

India then overhauled the total with 117 balls to spare to extend their unbeaten streak against their neighbours to eight in the 50-over showpiece tournament.

Rohit stood out in his 63-ball knock laced with six fours and six sixes to keep India, who began the event as favourites to win the title, unbeaten in their three matches in this edition.

Pakistan now have two wins and one defeat in the 10-nation tournament.

“There is no doubt about it that the bowlers set up the game for us again today. It was a great effort,” said Rohit.

“I don’t think it was a 190 pitch. At one stage we were looking at 270-280 but they came back and showed grit and that says a lot about the guys.”

Pakistan counterpart Babar Azam admitted his middle order and opening bowlers let him down.

“We had a collapse in the middle order,” he said.

“The way we started, we were targeting 280 or 290 but the collapse cost us so our total is not good.

“With the new ball, we were not up to the mark.”

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar stated he believes that India are on the right path to repeat the heroics of 2011 as they are strong contenders for lifting the ODI World Cup 2023. Akhtar’s comments came after Team India thrashed Pakistan by seven wickets in their World Cup match on Saturday in Ahmedabad. Put to bat first, Pakistan were bundled out for just 191 with Babar Azam scoring a half-century. Later, the hosts chased down the target in 30.3 overs after Rohit Sharma played a knock of 86 runs.

Akhtar praised Rohit for his magnificent batting performance and stated that the Indian skipper played “ruthlessly”

“I am beginning to believe India is about to repeat that history of the 2011 World Cup. If they don’t mess up in the semi-finals, India is really there to win this World Cup. So well done India. You have done wonderfully well. You destroyed us, demoralized us, and decimated us. Disappointing performance, a very disappointing performance. Today, India completely hammered Pakistan.” said Akhtar on his YouTube channel.

“Rohit Sharma was a one-man army. I don’t know where was Rohit Sharma in the last couple of years. He is a very big player and has a wide range of shots. He is a complete batter, a complete team, Pakistan’s humiliation is in front of us. India ne Bachon ki tarah maara(India beat Pakistan like kids). I couldn’t watch it. Rohit Sharma played ruthlessly,” he added.

Akhtar went on to state that Rohit “humiliated” Pakistan’s bowling attack and took revenge for his poor performances in the last two years.

“The kind of innings he played, he humiliated Pakistan’s bowling attack. He took revenge for the last two years where he didn’t get many runs. Good to see Rohit Sharma back, he did right to smash the bowlers. What’s the need to finish the game at the last overs and take it deep? Rohit hammered the bowlers,” said Akhtar.

As India and Pakistan geared up to face each other in a Cricket World Cup 2023 match on Saturday, Shoaib Akhtar‘s post triggered a chain of reactions on social media. Akhtar posted a picture of him dismissing Sachin Tendulkar in the post, inviting a plethora of reactions from cricketers and fans. After India defeated Pakistan comprehensively in the World Cup clash, Akhtar was severely trolled on X (formerly Twitter). Even Tendulkar couldn’t resist poking fun at the former Pakistan pacer. Now, Akhtar has also responded to Sachin’s post.

“Kal agar asa kuch kerna hai, toh #ThandRakh,” Akhtar’s post read, triggering reactions from many Indian cricketers, including Sachin.

After India hammered Pakistan by 7 wickets in the match, Tendulkar replied: “My friend, aap ka advice follow kiya aur sab kuch billlkoool THANDA rakha….”

The Rawalpindi Express also took to X to respond to Sachin’s post.

“My friend you’re the greatest player of all times to have graced the game and the biggest ambassador of it. Our friendly banter doesn’t change that for sure,” Akhtar wrote.

Pakistan players looked clueless against India’s collective all-round display as the batters succumbed to a below-par total of 191. India had nearly 20 overs to spare as they overhauled the total, with skipper Rohit Sharma leading the charge with the bat while the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul also played important roles.

Despite the bitter loss, Pakistan team director Mickey Arthur is hopeful of meeting India in the final of the World Cup.

At the post-match press conference, he said: “This Indian team is a very, very good cricket team. I think they’re very well led by Rahul and Rohit. I think they look good. I think they’ve got all bases covered and I’m looking forward to meeting them in the final again.”
