Ranchi:

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday reacted to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s statement and said that the BJP neither harasses nor protects anyone, adding that Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has harassed Champai Soren by making him the Chief Minister for a few days.

“BJP neither harasses nor protects, investigation agencies do their job, they have harassed Champai Soren by making him the Chief Minister for a few days. What would have happened if he had remained the Chief Minister for a few more days? This makes it clear that they want only one family to rule. The hunger for power is such that if they come back, they will not stay without a chair for even two days,” Mr Chouhan told reporters.

“The BJP is in the field with full force and will establish good governance again by winning the elections here,” he added.

The floor test of the new government in Jharkhand, led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who took oath of office for the third time on Thursday, will be held on July 8 during a special session of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly.

Earlier today, Hemant Soren was sworn-in as the 13th Chief Minister of Jharkhand in Raj Bhavan, Ranchi.

In a veiled attack on the BJP, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha executive president Hemant Soren slammed the BJP and said that the “arrogant people intoxicated with power” tried to “silence” him but with the support of the people, he was released from jail.

Hemant Soren was granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court on June 28 after spending five months in jail.

Before he took the oath, he posted a video message on X in which he slammed “arrogant people intoxicated with power (BJP) who tried to silence me” and said, “Today, the public opinion of the people of Jharkhand will rise again. Jai Jharkhand, Jai Hind.”

“Today is July 4. On January 31, from the same place, I conveyed a message to you all on how the opposition has conspired against me. They were successful. For five months, they tried to keep me inside the jail by different means. We took the legal path and people supported us. The people of the state supported us and at last the court released me from jail,” said Hemant Soren in a video message before taking oath as Jharkhand CM.

He further said that the opposition put him in jail by levelling false allegations.

“In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, the people of Jharkhand gave our party mandate but the conspirators were unable to digest how an Adivasi youngster can sit in such a high position. At last, on January 31, they (the BJP) put false allegations on me and removed me from the post of Chief Minister. Because of the people’s blessings, I’m here out sitting in front of you. We will always be the voice of the people. Today, the public opinion of the people of Jharkhand will rise again. By taking charge, the work will be carried out again,” he said.

Earlier today, Hemant Soren arrived at the oath ceremony, with JMM national president Shibu Soren arrived at the Raj Bhavan in Ranchi.

Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan administered the oath of office to Soren.

Soren, on June 28, was released on bail in a land scam case after spending around five months in jail.

Champai Soren resigned from the post just five months after taking the oath, setting the ball rolling for Hemant Soren to again take over the role on Wednesday.

Champai Soren took oath as the 12th Chief Minister of Jharkhand in the Raj Bhavan on February 2 this year.

Hemant Soren was released from the Birsa Munda Jail on June 28 after nearly five months following bail from Jharkhand High Court in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam. He had resigned as Chief Minister before his arrest on January 31.

He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in January on charges related to an alleged land scam and money laundering.

Earlier on December 29, Hemant Soren took the oath as Chief Minister of Jharkhand as the 11th Chief Minister of Jharkhand.

The event was termed as ‘Sankalp Diwas’ by mark the beginning of an era of new Jharkhand.

Hemant Soren’s return as CM will bolster the JMM, which won three seats in the tribal-dominated state of Jharkhand in the Lok Sabha elections.

In 2019, JMM fought the assembly elections in alliance with the Congress and Lalu Prasad’s Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) and got a comfortable majority with forty-seven seats in the 81-member house.

Kartikey Chouhan, son of Shivraj Chouhan

Bhopal:

With Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the former chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, making to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet and the switch to Delhi, political circles are abuzz about the possible rise of his son Kartikey Singh Chouhan.

Mr Chouhan, now Union Agriculture Minister, led a grand roadshow in Bhopal last Sunday. This was followed by a workers’ gratitude conference in Bherunda, Sehore, on Friday amid huge buzz that the Minister’s son, Kartikey Chouhan, might be fielded from the Budhni Assembly seat vacated by his father.

In Bhopal, Mr Chouhan’s roadshow drew massive crowds, underscoring people’s love for the leader. Supporters lined both sides of the the streets, waved flags and cheered for him.

In Bherunda, Sehore, at a workers’ gratitude conference, to celebrate the historic victory of Mr Chouhan in the Budhni Assembly, Kartikey Chauhan, along with his mother Sadhana Singh, thanked the people.  Senior Chouhan addressed the gathering through video conferencing.

Addressing the workers, Kartikey Chouhan highlighted the overwhelming support from the Budhni Assembly constituency, where his father secured a remarkable victory by 1.5 lakh votes.

“The people of Budhni have consistently given their blessings to our leader, making Shivraj ji the MLA six times. He is the only leader whose election is fought by the people of the constituency. I bow at your feet,” said the Junior Chouhan, an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

The event was attended by several officials, including the BJP District President. Kartikey Chouhan used this platform to discuss various issues with the workers and reflect on the challenges faced during the 2023 elections.

“Many fingers were raised, but we have given a befitting reply to the intellectuals. I do not see any difference between you, me and Shivraj ji. We all have many bodies and one soul,” said the son.

“In the 2024 elections, everyone put forward their views in the Vidisha parliamentary constituency meeting. The results came out, and we registered a victory by one and a half lakh votes,” he proudly announced.

Shivraj Chouhan, popularly known as Mama (maternal uncle), expressed gratitude for the love and respect shown by the people.

“It is because of your love and respect that I have reached here. I bow at your feet. Due to my busy schedule, I could not come, but I will definitely come next week. Development work will continue uninterrupted,” he assured.

Highlighting his father’s enduring popularity, Kartikeya Chouhan said, “Our leader was popular even as Chief Minister, and he became more popular when he was not the Chief Minister. After such a huge victory, today even the entire Delhi bows down. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, our leader Shivraj Singh Chauhan is counted among the biggest leaders in the country.”

Congress’ Digvijaya Singh, who lost from Raghogarh in the just concluded Lok Sabha polls, made light of Junior Chouhan’s remarks.

“If Shivraj’s popularity truly extends from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, BJP leaders should acknowledge this and consider promoting Shivraj to the position of Prime Minister,” said Mr Singh.

Amid these celebrations, there is growing speculation that Kartikey Chouhan might be fielded from the Budhni Assembly seat, which was vacated by his father after being elected as a Member of Parliament. This potential move could further consolidate the Chouhan family’s influence in the region.

The government department responsible for the canal has sought help from the revenue department

Bhopal:

In a bewildering development, land designated for a canal in the constituency of Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has inexplicably vanished.

The government department responsible for the canal has sought help from the revenue department to locate the missing land.

Historically, the canal, documented to be used for irrigation in Daulatpura and Madankheda, was established with the aim of providing irrigation water to farmers and to boost agricultural productivity.

This canal, positioned near the Betwa river, played a vital role in the region’s agriculture. However, the canal has mysteriously disappeared, leaving the community and the authorities puzzled.

“When we were small, we used to bathe in the canal water, but now it has vanished,” said Basant Kumar Kushwaha, a resident.

Adding to the intrigue is the theft of a water-lifting machine worth lakhs of rupees which was installed on the banks of the canal.

The canal department has asked the revenue department about the exact location of this land. The local administration, however, appears equally perplexed and concerned.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

“You have brought this matter to my notice. A thorough investigation will be conducted to find out who has encroached upon the land and the government land will be freed,” district collector Buddhesh Kumar Vaidya said.

The matter dates back to 1980 when the land was acquired by the government at a relatively low cost, and farmers were compensated properly.

Over the years, residential colonies began to emerge in the area where the canal once stood. Encroachments upon government land, under the guise of colony development, had become a recurring issue. The exact timeline of when the canal was dismantled and the whereabouts of its material remain shrouded in mystery.

This land that disappeared was in the Union Agriculture Minister’s constituency, raising significant questions and concerns among the local population and government authorities. Locals said they are tracking how the investigation unfolds, and want the valuable canal land to be restored.

Shivraj Chouhan also spoke to the passengers in the train and posed with children.

Bhopal/New Delhi:

Union Minister Shivraj Chouhan today travelled by train to reach Bhopal, weeks after he won the Lok Sabha elections from his home turf Vidisha.

Known for his down-to-earth approach, Mr Chouhan boarded the Shatabdi Express from Delhi along with his wife.

He also spoke to the passengers in the train and posed with children. Some were also seen clicking selfie with him.

Sharing his train travel pics on X – earlier known a Twitter – Mr Chouhan praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for “revolutionary changes” in the Indian Railways.

“Under the guidance of the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji and the vision of Railways Minister Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw ji, Indian Railways is witnessing revolutionary changes in all areas of management and operations. Indian Railways is continuously working to meet the fast paced needs of New India and to make the journey of passengers economical, safe and comfortable,” he said.

Ex-Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan – who orchestrated the BJP’s thumping win in the Assembly election last year, but was stood down from returning in that role – is the new Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister, replacing the BJP’s senior tribal leader Arjun Munda.

Mr Chouhan contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from his Vidisha stronghold, which he won by a margin of over 8.2 lakh votes; he won this seat in five consecutive elections between 1991 and 2004.

PM Modi will also grant certificates to more than 30,000 self-help groups designated as Krishi Sakhis.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release over Rs 20,000 crore as the 17th instalment of the PM-KISAN scheme at an event in Varanasi on June 18, which will benefit 9.26 crore farmers nationwide, Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Saturday.

”Agriculture has always been a priority for the Prime Minister in his last two tenures,” Mr Chouhan said.

“Maintaining absolute transparency in registering and verifying beneficiaries, the Government of India has disbursed over Rs 3.04 lakh crore to more than 11 crore farmers across the nation. With this release, the total amount transferred to the beneficiaries since the inception of the scheme will cross well over Rs 3.24 lakh crore,” the minister said.

Mr Chouhan said that PM Modi will also grant certificates to more than 30,000 self-help groups designated as Krishi Sakhis after the release of the 17th instalment of the PM KISAN scheme.

PM Modi kicked off his third term in office on June 10 with the signing of the release of the 17th instalment of the PM Kisan Nidhi to underline the importance that his government attaches to the farmers.

The scheme, launched in February 2019, transfers online an amount of Rs 6,000 annually in three equal instalments of Rs 2,000 directly into the bank accounts of farmers.

The Minister further stated that around 2.5 crore farmers will join the event across the country through video. Additionally, 732 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), over 1 lakh Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies, and 5 lakh Common Service Centres (CSCs) from across the country will participate in the event to raise awareness among farmers.

Several Union Ministers will also be visiting 50 Krishi Vigyan Kendras to interact with farmers and raise awareness about the various schemes of the Department. They will also distribute certificates to the trained Krishi Sakhis of the area, Mr Chouhan added.

Following the Kisan Sammelan, PM Modi will visit the Baba Kashi Vishwanath Temple and participate in the world-famous Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat.

Senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan took charge of the Union Agriculture Ministry and Rural Development. He had held an informal meeting with the top bureaucrats of the two Ministries on Monday evening.

Mr. Chouhan has his work cut out with the farmers’ organisations threatening to launch fresh protests demanding legal guarantee for minimum support price for all crops. A group of farmers, who were stopped from entering Delhi, has been camping at Khanauri near the Punjab-Haryana boundary for several weeks demanding the same. The last five years of the Narendra Modi government were marked by relentless protest, which led to their oldest allies the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) snapping ties with the BJP.

Speaking to the media persons, the former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh underlined that Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his day in office by authorising the release of the 17th instalment of PM Kisan Nidhi, which will benefit 9.3 crore farmers and distribute around ₹20,000 crore.

“The Prime Minister has resolved to double the income of farmers, work is going on continuously for that. We will all work together even faster on that and take every possible step for the welfare of farmers,” the Union Minister said. He also handed over BJP’s “Sankalp Patra” – a document detailing the party’s promises and guarantees to the top bureaucrats of the agriculture ministry.

Later in the day, he also took charge of the Rural Development Ministry. Speaking to mediapersons at the Ministry, he said, in the last 10-year the BJP government has taken many “revolutionary steps” in the rural sector. In MGNREGS, he said more emphasis will be laid down on “asset creation”.

The 65-year-old leader took oath as part of the Prime Minister’s Council of Ministers on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in his over three-decade-long political career.

The BJP leader won the Vidisha Lok Sabha seat for an impressive sixth time, securing a record margin of 8.21 lakh votes. Born on March 5, 1959, in a farming family in Jait village, Sehore district, Mr. Chouhan’s political journey began with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) when he was 13 years old. He was first elected to the Madhya Pradesh Assembly from Budhni constituency in 1990 and later became a Member of Parliament from Vidisha in 1991. He was re-elected from the same constituency in 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2004, winning his fifth Lok Sabha election with an impressive margin of over 2,60,000 votes.

The BJP leader asserted that PM Modi will reclaim PoK if voted to power again.

New Delhi:

Senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday accused the Congress and India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru of “breaking the country” and asserted that PM Narendra Modi “will bring the nation together”.

At a poll meeting in South Delhi in support of BJP candidate Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister exuded confidence that if elected for a third time, PM Modi will take back Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK).

Likening PM Modi to God’s messenger, Mr Chouhan said, “He is sent by God to end evil in the country. Under his guidance, the country has prospered and is poised to become a world leader.” “The Congress and Nehru, on the other hand, committed the sin of breaking the country. If (ex-PM) Nehru hadn’t stopped the war (of 1947) and allowed it to continue for three more days, the entire Kashmir would have been a part of India today. There wouldn’t have been any POK,” he said.

The BJP leader asserted that PM Modi will reclaim PoK if voted to power again. He vowed to uphold the “pride of Mother India and the people of Delhi” and exuded confidence that the BJP would win all seven Lok Sabha seats in the national capital.

Mr Chouhan accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of “cheating” people who helped him build the Aam Aadmi Party.

“He (Kejriwal) cheated so many people and sidelined them. From Anna Hazare and Prashant Bhushan to Kumar Vishwas, he betrayed all of them. Swati Maliwal just got added to this list,” he claimed.

Mr Kejriwal’s aide Bibhav Kumar was arrested on Saturday for allegedly assaulting AAP MP Swati Maliwal at the chief minister’s residence. The AAP has claimed that Ms Maliwal was “blackmailed” by the BJP to become part of the “conspiracy” against the chief minister since she was facing charges in an illegal recruitment case.

Taking a swipe at the opposition INDIA bloc, Mr Chouhan termed it an “alliance of compulsion”.

“These people cannot run the country properly. They have not even revealed the name of their prime ministerial candidate. Only PM Modi can run the country effectively and take it to newer heights,” he added.

Identifying himself as the “mama” of India’s daughters and sisters, Mr Chouhan said the BJP government has introduced various schemes to empower women and said that he would soon be joining Parliament.

Mr Chouhan also addressed poll meetings in Northwest Delhi’s Rohini and Northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura areas.

Ahead of the polls, here is a look at some of the key battles.

New Delhi:

Mama vs Dada in Madhya Pradesh and a cricketer making his poll debut against a political veteran in West Bengal – the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections today will encompass 95 constituencies spread across 12 states. The Betul constituency in Madhya Pradesh, originally slated for Phase 2, has been rescheduled for Phase 3 due to the death of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate. All 26 constituencies of Gujarat will cast their votes in a single phase, along with two constituencies in Goa. The remaining 14 constituencies in Karnataka, predominantly situated in north Karnataka, are also scheduled for polling on the same day, marking the conclusion of voting in the state.

Ahead of the polls, here is a look at some of the key battles:

Gandhinagar: Amit Shah vs Sonal Patel

Gujarat’s Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency is a key stronghold for the BJP. Since 1989, it has consistently delivered victories to the party, spanning six terms for BJP veteran Lal Krishna Advani and, and most recently in 2019, for Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who secured a comprehensive win by over 5 lakh votes. As the elections approach this year, the Home Minister faces Congress candidate Sonal Patel, aiming to maintain the constituency’s allegiance to the BJP.

Mainpuri: Dimple Yadav vs Jaiveer Singh vs Shiv Prasad Yadav

The incumbent Mainpuri MP, Dimple Yadav, faces a formidable opponent in Jaiveer Singh of the BJP. While initially perceived as a head-to-head battle, the entry of Shiv Prasad Yadav from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has presented a third contender. Dimple Yadav, who clinched Mainpuri in a bypoll following the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav in 2022, secured victory with a surge of sympathy votes. This upcoming election poses as the primary litmus test for her. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the contest was confined to the BJP and SP, with Mulayam Singh Yadav emerging victorious against BJP’s Prem Singh Shakya.

Baramati: Supriya Sule vs Sunetra Pawar

In Maharashtra’s Baramati, all eyes are fixed on the Pawar family rift as the stage is being readied for a clash between Supriya Sule, representing the Sharad Pawar faction of NCP, and her cousin Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra Pawar, the NCP candidate. Since 2009, Supriya Sule, Sharad Pawar’s daughter and the incumbent MP, has consistently won in this constituency. Baramati has long been a stronghold of the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, dating back to his tenure as an MLA in 1967. Throughout subsequent Lok Sabha elections, candidates backed by him have emerged victorious in Baramati, including Ajit in 1991. Sharad Pawar himself held the parliamentary seat from 1996 until Supriya succeeded him.

Shivamogga: BY Raghavendra vs Geetha Shivarajkumar vs KS Eshwarappa

In the Shivamogga Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka, KS Eshwarappa, the suspended BJP leader has announced his intention to run as an independent candidate, challenging the incumbent MP, BY Raghavendra, son of former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, and Geetha Shivrajkumar, the Congress candidate, spouse of Kannada superstar Shiva Rajkumar and daughter of another Karnataka Chief Minister Sarekoppa Bangarappa.

This parliamentary area, consisting of eight assembly segments, has been firmly under the control of the Yediyurappa family since 2009. In the 2009 general elections, BY Raghavendra secured victory with a margin of over 4.82 lakh votes and a vote share of 50.58 per cent. In 2014, he relinquished the seat to his father, BS Yediyurappa, who triumphed with a commanding lead of over 6 lakh votes and a 53.69 per cent vote share. Returning to Raghavendra in 2019, he secured a landslide victory with over 7.29 lakh votes and a vote share of 56.86 per cent.

Berhampore: Yusuf Pathan vs Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury

Berhampore in West Bengal has long been a stronghold for the Congress party. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the current MP, has held this position since 1999. In both the 2019 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Mr Chowdhury secured victory over candidates from Trinamool Congress (TMC) by considerable margins. As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approach, Berhampore is in for a contest between Mr Chowdhury, Nirmal Kumar Saha of the BJP and ex-cricketer Yusuf Pathan of the TMC.  Mr Chowdhury has represented the Congress party in Berhampore for three consecutive terms from 2009 to 2019. The Congress veteran also triumphed in the 2016 Assembly elections across all seven Assembly segments falling within the constituency.

Vidisha: Shivraj Singh Chouhan vs Bhanu Pratap Sharma

In Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha, it will be a contest between Mama and Dada. Since 1967, the Jana Sangh has predominantly held the Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency and subsequently the BJP, with only two exceptions in 1980 and 1984 when the Congress candidate, Pratap Bhanu Sharma, secured the seat. From 1989 onwards, BJP representatives have consistently won the Vidisha seat. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who served five terms from 1991 to 2004, is now making a comeback after nearly two decades to vie for the seat. He faces Mr Sharma, the sole Congress victor in this constituency’s history. Mr Chouhan’s rapport with voters affectionately referred to as “Mamaji,” has only strengthened since his tenure as Chief Minister ended.

Guna: Jyotiraditya Scindia vs Congress’ Rao Yadvendra Singh Yadav

More than four years after joining the BJP from the Congress, Jyotiraditya Scindia is set to make his debut as a BJP candidate in the Lok Sabha, aiming to regain his family’s historical stronghold in Guna. Mr Scindia’s grandmother, Vijayaraje Scindia, had secured the Guna seat in 1957 under the Congress banner. Subsequently, she aligned with the Bharatiya Jan Sangh and later the BJP. She served the constituency for five additional terms, including one under the Swatantra Party in 1967, followed by four consecutive terms with the BJP from 1989 to 1998. The Congress has put forth Rao Yadvendra Singh Yadav, seeking to unite the influential Yadav community in opposition to Mr Scindia.

Bhopal:

A police officer in Madhya Pradesh faced the wrath of a BJP MLA for turning off Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s mike in line with the poll panel’s Model Code of Conduct during an election rally in Madhya Pradesh.

The incident was reported on Thursday night in Bhojpur assembly segment of Vidisha constituency, from where the BJP has fielded Shivraj Chouhan as its Lok Sabha candidate.

While Shivraj Chouhan was addressing the poll rally, Mahendra Singh Thakur, the in-charge of Mandideep police station, reportedly turned off the mike as the poll code suggests that the candidates should end their campaign by 10 pm.

After the mike was turned off, Shivraj Chouhan was seen questioning the cop’s conduct in a video. “Why did you turn the mike off, it’s 10 pm yet, switch it on again, just remove him (concerned cop) from here,” said Mr Chouhan.

The former MP minister and local BJP MLA Surendra Patwa, however, seething in anger not just questioned the cop’s conduct, but also threatened him with dire consequences.

“Come here, you will be thrown to such a place that it wouldn’t be possible to return. He (the cop) is creating a lot of trouble,” Mr Patwa – nephew of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Sunder Lal Patwah -was seen telling the cop in the video, before local BJP leaders and workers stopped him.

The mike was later turned on.

The Congress has hit out at the BJP after the video went viral.

“Look at BJP’s arrogance. Shivraj Singh Chaouhan is raising questions over the implementation of the election code of conduct and Surendra Patwa misbehaving and threatening the police station in-charge Mahendra Singh Thakur. Extremely indecent and condemanable act,” the Madhya Pradesh Congress posted on its official handle on X – earlier known as Twitter.

Vidisha goes to polls in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 7.

Mr Chouhan, who dominated the politics of Madhya Pradesh for nearly two decades, resigned as the chief minister in December last year, after Mohan Yadav was chosen as his successor, bringing curtains down on an era.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan has taken a jibe at Congress’s Sam Pitroda over his remark on inheritance tax

Raisen, Madhya Pradesh:

Madhya Pradesh’s former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has taken a jibe at Sam Pitroda, who heads the Congress’s overseas chapter over his remarks on inheritance tax and said that India’s culture, tradition, and moral values are not of America.

Addressing a public rally in Raisen, Shivraj Singh Chouhan slammed Sam Pitroda for comparing India with America and said, “In a country like America, there is a provision that after death, the government (US) takes away 55% of the property. However, Sam Pitroda, this is not America, it’s India. India’s culture, tradition, and moral values are not of America. India is India.”

Earlier, emphasising the need for policy toward wealth redistribution, Sam Pitroda spoke about the concept of inheritance tax prevailing in America and said these are issues that will need to be discussed.

“In America, there is an inheritance tax. If one has 100 million USD worth of wealth and when he dies he can only transfer probably 45 per cent to his children, 55 per cent is grabbed by the government. That’s an interesting law. It says you in your generation made wealth and you are leaving now, you must leave your wealth for the public, not all of it, half of it, which to me sounds fair,” Sam Pitroda had said.

“In India, you don’t have that. If somebody is worth 10 billion and he dies, his children get 10 billion and the public gets nothing…So these are the kinds of issues people will have to debate and discuss. When we talk about redistributing wealth, we are talking about new policies and new programs that are in the interest of the people and not in the interest of the super-rich only,” he had further said.

Criticising Congress, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, “Be it farmers or the poor people, they also save money so that after their death, they can give something to their children. But the Congress wants to end this tradition.”

Shivraj Chouhan added further, “This inheritance tax was in imposition earlier as well, but due to people’s pressure, Congress abolished it… Maybe Rajiv Gandhi wanted to get the property of Indira Gandhi, and so he abolished it. The party has to make its intention clear before the nation. Congress is not on India’s path. It is on a dangerous path.”

In India, the concept of levying tax on inheritance does not exist as of now. In fact, the Inheritance or Estate Tax was abolished with effect from 1985.

Shivraj Chouhan also slammed the Congress party for conducting caste-based census. “On one hand, they talk about imposing inheritance tax, on the other hand, they talk about caste-based census… In how many parts do you want to divide the nation and society?… There are dangerous intentions lying behind… and those intentions are dividing the country based on caste… The country will never accept this, the people of the nation will never accept this,” he said.
