Though Sanju Samson and Mukesh Kumar were the chief contributors in India’s 42-run win over Zimbabwe in the fifth and final game to win series 4-1, Shivam Dube’s contribution in all departments of the game got him the Player of the Match award. At the Harare Sports Club on Sunday, Dube played a handy cameo of 26 off 12 balls to take India’s total to an above-par 167/6. He then took two wickets with his tight medium-pace bowling, and even manufactured an important direct hit to get Sikandar Raza out, to shut the door on Zimbabwe’s chances of winning the game.

“It’s always a special thing to contribute in both departments. Took some wickets, very happy. In T20s, you can struggle but one shot and you can get back. The ground is big, we enjoy playing here, the atmosphere and the people are amazing,” said Dube after the match ended.

Off-spin all-rounder Washington Sundar played only two games in IPL 2024, but got to play all games in Zimbabwe. Some effective bowling from him got Washington the Player of the Series award.

“Good to have finished with a win. After the first game, the conditions were similar to South Africa getting that extra bounce and extra pace. We had enough time to get a lot of information. Lots of takeaways, lot of learnings, lot of confidence going into the Sri Lanka series. We had a lot of success as a team,” he said.

Shubman Gill, who got his first series win as India captain, was in praise of the fightback shown by his team after losing the opening game by 13 runs. “Excellent series. The hunger that we showed after the first loss was phenomenal to watch.”

“Lot of the players had long flights, they weren’t used to the conditions. The way we adapted was remarkable. I have been there (Sri Lanka) once for Asia Cup, looking forward to go there and performing (later this month).”

Premier Indian batter Virat Kohli is having a poor season of T20 World Cup. The veteran got out for a golden duck against United States on Wednesday, extending his poor run after being promoted as an opener in the mega-event. Kohli scored 1 against Ireland in Team India’s campaign opener before getting dismissed for 4 against Pakistan. When asked about the senior batter’s lack of form, his teammate Shivam Dube was quite positive while assessing the veteran’s form.

“There is nothing I can say about Virat Kohli because I’m not Virat Kohli,” said Dube as quoted by PTI.

“His bad patch means he got out cheaply a couple of times but will come back scoring hundreds in the next three matches. We all know his game and how he plays,” Dube added.

Accustomed to batting on belters in India, big-hitting all-rounder Shivam Dube conceded that the two-paced tracks for the T20 World Cup matches in New York left him bamboozled to such an extent that it almost felt like playing a Ranji Trophy game.

The Chennai Super Kings star regained some form with a 35-ball 31 in the seven-wicket win over a fighting USA team that propelled India into the event’s Super Eight stage on Wednesday. The World Cup would move entirely to the West Indies with the Super Eight games.

“I was struggling with my form and focusing on my process,” Dube said about his successive failures against Ireland and Pakistan at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.

“But here, there was no pressure. All the support staff and coaches backed me and told me, ‘It’s difficult, but you have the ability to hit sixes, so apply it.’

“I’ve never doubted myself for what I’ve done in the past. I just think that these conditions do not demand what I’ve done at CSK. These conditions require a different approach, so I was batting differently today,” he added.

“Otherwise, if you look at the batting order, no one bowls. No one bowls in top six and that’s the biggest challenge what we have as Indian cricket. And that’s what we need to consider that as well. So for me, Jaiswal, Rohit and then Virat bats at number three.” Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden also wants Kohli to bat as much as possible in the powerplay.

“By popular consensus of the panel, I’ve got Virat there. I’ve got to have him in the powerplay. If I’m going to pick him, he has to play in the powerplay.

“He has to play the majority of those six overs as an opener, because Yashasvi does deserve to be there in my opinion, and it will be a left and right hand combination which will be a huge bonus, and that’s why I say it’s such a pivotal selection, this.” Hayden never thought Kohli’s batting position will be this important in the larger scheme of things.

“Who would have even thought that we would be having this conversation about the greatest player (Kohli) in India, maybe ever. So it all comes down to are we interested in selecting a side that we believe is the right balance and is going to win this World Cup,” Hayden said.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra lauded Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Shivam Dube and said that the left-hand batter should be there in the Indian squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 following his match-winning performance against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 fixture on Tuesday.
