Virat Kohli is stamping his class on the IPL 2024. Currently, he is the top run-getter in the IPL 2024 with a tally of 634 in 12 innings. With five fifties and one century, Kohli’s form augurs well for the Indian cricket team ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. Kohli’s latest half-century came against Punjab Kings as he scored a 47-ball 92. While his innings has all elements to be one of his best innings in this edition of the IPL, Kohli made a bigger news by his viral run out of Shashank Singh.

Kohli latched on to the ball after sprinting for quite some distance and threw the ball while in mid-air to run out Shashank Singh, PBKS’ most consistent batter.

Now a new visual of the run out has come, which shows exactly how the run out happened.

Talking to the broadcasters, after the match got completed, he gave a peek into how he has changed his batting this IPL.

“I’ve brought out the slog-sweep to the spinners. I just mentally put myself in that situation and I didn’t practice it at all,” Kohli said after the match. “I know I can hit it because I’ve hit it a lot in the past. So, I just felt like I need to take a bit more risk and for me that shot was something that I used to hit regularly back in the day. And that’s allowing me to hit off the back foot as well because I’m always looking to expose that side of the field against the spin. For me that has been a massive factor in this IPL.”

“So, I think it just takes a bit more conviction and take out that thought that props up: ‘what if you get out’. I’ve been managing to stay ahead of that thought in this IPL and that’s really helped me in the middle overs in this IPL, keeping my strike rate up and keeping the scoring rate going for the team as well,” he said.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 58th match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala on Thursday. Having won four games out of 11, PBKS are placed eighth in the IPL 2024 standings. On the other hand, RCB are currently placed seventh in the IPL 2024 standings with eight points on the board after winning four matches out of 11.

Ahead of another exciting clash between these teams, we look at the predicted XIs of both sides.

PBKS Predicted XI

Prabhsimran Singh

Prabhsimran Singh will open the innings for PBKS in the absence of Shikhar Dhawan. He eventually found his form in IPL 2024 and has scored 251 runs in 11 matches. With a fifty-plus score and strike rate of 156.88 to his name, the right-hander will aim to guide his team to a brisk start on Thursday.

Jonny Bairstow

Jonny Bairstow’s recent batting performances have been remarkable. Sporting an impressive average of 32.13 and a strike rate of 163.69, he has amassed 257 runs in nine matches. The English wicketkeeper-batter has even notched a century in IPL 2024 and will be determined to challenge RCB’s bowlers in front of the home crowd.

Rilee Rossouw

Rilee Rossouw didn’t have an ideal beginning to his IPL 2024 journey, but he has steadily found a bit of form. In five matches, Rossouw has accumulated 79 runs, highlighted by a rapid 43-run cameo against CSK. Having scored at a strike rate of 151.92, the South African international will be determined to make a significant impact against RCB in the upcoming fixture on Thursday.

Shashank Singh

Shashank Singh plays a crucial role in the Punjab Kings’ batting lineup. With 315 runs in 11 matches, the hard-hitting batter flaunts an outstanding average of 63 and an impressive strike rate of 165.79. He is the team’s top-scorer this season and could be a game-changer in their upcoming match against RCB.

Sam Curran (captain)

In the absence of the injured Shikhar Dhawan, Sam Curran will assume the role of captaincy. While Curran’s batting performances have been average, his bowling has shone brightly, with 13 wickets in 11 IPL 2024 matches. He will be eager to make significant contributions with both bat and ball in the upcoming match.

Jitesh Sharma (wicketkeeper)

Jitesh Sharma certainly bolsters the Punjab Kings’ batting lineup. Despite a subpar performance with the bat in IPL 2024, having amassed only 128 runs in 11 matches, Sharma’s capacity to unleash powerful shots could catch the RCB bowling unit off guard come Thursday.

Ashutosh Sharma

Ashutosh Sharma has enjoyed a sensational debut IPL season. The skilled batter has been formidable, accumulating 162 runs in just eight matches. With a half-century to his name and an impressive strike rate of 172.34, Sharma has shown signs of being a match-winner. If allowed to bat against RCB, he has the potential to amass crucial runs and accelerate the innings for his team.

Harpreet Brar

Harpreet Brar is set to spearhead PBKS’ spin bowling attack in the upcoming match. With six wickets to his credit in 11 matches and a decent economy rate of 7.56, Brar has showcased his bowling prowess. Along with taking wickets, he is also handy in containing the opposition batters. Additionally, he possesses batting skills and can contribute crucial runs lower down the order.

Rahul Chahar

Rahul Chahar will partner with Harpreet Brar in the spin bowling attack. His diverse spin arsenal has the potential to outfox even the most seasoned batters, leading him to claim eight wickets in six matches this season. Chahar heads into this match fresh from a three-wicket performance against CSK and will look to add to his wickets tally against RCB.

Harshal Patel

Harshal Patel is a key figure in the pace bowling department for Punjab Kings. The right-arm pacer is currently the second-highest wicket-taker in the ongoing IPL edition with 17 scalps from 11 matches. His proficiency in delivering deceptive slower balls will be instrumental in both containing batters and securing vital breakthroughs for PBKS.

Kagiso Rabada

Kagiso Rabada is expected to lead the Punjab Kings’ bowling attack on Thursday. His ability to take wickets during the powerplay and maintain accurate lengths has resulted in 11 scalps in 11 matches this season. Rabada will be eager to secure early dismissals and put pressure on RCB.

Impact sub

Arshdeep Singh

RCB Predicted XI

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli heads into this match on the back of a 27-ball 42 runs in his last match against Gujarat Titans. Kohli’s innings included two boundaries and four sixes, showcasing a striking rate of 155.56. With a total of 542 runs in just 11 matches this season, he is the leading run-scorer in IPL 2024 and will look to contribute again on Thursday.

Faf du Plessis (captain)

RCB captain Faf du Plessis will open the innings along with Virat Kohli in the upcoming match against PBKS. Faf has been in decent form in IPL 2024 with 352 runs in 11 matches including three fifty-plus scores while maintaining an impressive strike rate of 172.55. The former Proteas captain will be eager to put up a big score in the upcoming match.

Will Jacks

In IPL 2024, Will Jacks announced himself with a blazing 41-ball ton against GT. With 177 runs in six matches at an average of 35.40 and a strike rate of 186.32, the English batter has been outstanding. Jacks has also contributed with the ball, claiming two wickets for RCB. The hard-hitting English cricketer will be eager to showcase his power-hitting skills at Dharamshala.

Rajat Patidar

Talented batter Rajat Patidar is an important member of the RCB lineup. With a strike rate of 178.53, Patidar has scored 213 runs in 11 matches in IPL 2024. He did not bat well in the previous match, but Rajat will be keen to bounce back with a fiery performance sooner rather than later.

Glenn Maxwell

With only 36 runs in eight matches, Glenn Maxwell has yet to have a successful outing with the bat in IPL 2024. However, the Australian all-rounder has managed to claim five wickets and is capable of taking games away with the bat when in form, making him a key player for RCB.

Cameron Green

Maxwell’s compatriot Cameron Green adds depth to RCB’s batting as well as bowling department. Green has had a below-par performance with the bat this season but has been impressive with the ball in hand. The Australian all-rounder has taken seven wickets in nine matches and will aim to produce an all-round performance against PBKS.

Dinesh Karthik (wicketkeeper)

The addition of Dinesh Karthik to RCB’s starting lineup injects crucial firepower into their already lethal batting lineup. In 11 matches, the wicketkeeper-batter has accumulated 283 runs, including two fifty-plus scores. He also boasts an impressive average of 56.60 and a striking rate of 193.84. Karthik will look to make a significant impact and further bolster his run tally in the upcoming match against Punjab.

Swapnil Singh

Swapnil Singh has made a bit of an impact with ball in hand in IPL 2024. The off-spinner’s ability to outsmart batters with his spin variations has led to him taking three wickets in three matches. He could lead the spin-bowling attack for RCB and will aim to improve his wicket tally against PBKS come Thursday.

Karn Sharma

Karn Sharma is an important member of the RCB spin-bowling outfit and has scalped four wickets in five matches. He is likely to play a crucial role in containing PBKS’s hard-hitting batters and will try to provide breakthroughs during the middle overs.

Mohammed Siraj

Mohammed Siraj will spearhead the pace bowling attack for RCB. While the Indian speedster has taken only eight wickets in 10 matches, he has been slightly expensive, conceding at an economy rate of 9.26. Siraj will hope to provide early breakthroughs with the new ball in the upcoming match.

Yash Dayal

Yash Dayal’s inclusion in RCB’s playing XI adds an element of anticipation and excitement to the team’s bowling lineup. With his versatile skills, Dayal has taken 10 wickets in as many matches. Known for his deceptive bowling variations, Dayal is the team’s top wicket-taker and is poised to have a significant impact on the game.

Following the historic win, a 10-year-old tweet from another Bollywood star Salman Khan has gone viral and fans on social media were left stunned by the interaction.

Back in 2014, Salman posted on X (formerly Twitter) – “Zinta’s team won kya?”

PBKS responded after the win over KKR – “Match bhi jeete aur dil bhi!”

Shashank Singh said his ability to pick the bowlers and take the game deep helped him produce the blistering unbeaten 68 off 28 balls, which played a big role in Punjab Kings’ record-breaking eight-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. When Shashank entered the field, PBKS needed 84 runs in 7.3 overs to overhaul KKR’s daunting 261 for six. Jonny Bairstow, the eventual centurion, was then batting at the other end on 93 off 39 balls.

However, Shashank did not bat an eyelid while knocking off 68 runs (2×4, 8×6) in that period as Bairstow added just 15 off nine balls during their third wicket alliance, which saw Punjab raising the bar for the highest run chase in T20s.

“Before this, in the pre-camp and in the domestic matches, I was batting to make sure I could take the game as deep as possible.

“I knew I’d be batting around 5-7 in the IPL, so I have been planning on how to take my innings deep,” said Shashank on JioCinema.

But there was a lot of cricketing smarts too in his innings as Shashank left alone KKR spinner Sunil Narine while focussing on other bowlers to collect his runs.

“I know that Sunil Narine is a world-class bowler, so I knew there was no point in over-attacking him. He’s someone to hit singles, doubles, or nudge the ball towards the boundary.

“There were other bowlers to target, so my aim was to take it deep and pick my bowlers to target,” he said.

In fact, Shashank faced seven balls out of 28 from Narine and scored just three runs, while putting other bowlers through the wringer, making the remaining 65 off 21 balls.

The 32-year-old said his own experience and talks with his father and coaches at PBKS helped him in his journey.

“If we talk about smartness, it’s coming with experience. Secondly, I spend a lot of time discussing cricket with my father. Last time when I got out too quickly, my dad told me that I should’ve played further back because it was a slow wicket.

I have these conversations with my father at home and the world-class coaches who are here. I enjoy asking questions and understanding what they do. I think if I take clues from them, it’ll improve my cricket,” he added. PTI UNG ATK

Bowlers need to find “innovative ways to execute deliveries with a touch of “anti-skill” to challenge the range-hitting batsmen in the ongoing IPL, reckoned Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate. Punjab Kings successfully mounted the highest run-chase in T20s when they surpassed Kolkata Knight Riders imposing 261/6 with eight balls and eight wickets to spare in their IPL match at Eden Gardens on Friday.

“The game is almost unrecognisable from 10 years ago when you get past 160 you can almost pack your bag and feel you’re going to win the game. Now, you need 160 before the 13th over to have a chance to get a big score,” Doeschate said during the post-match media interaction.

Jonnny Bairstow led the chase with a scintillating 108 off just 48 deliveries after Impact Player Prabhsimran Singh set the tone with a blistering 54 off 20 balls.

After Prabhsimran’s exit, Shashank Singh provided a helping hand with an unbeaten 28-ball 68 in a match that witnessed a record 42 sixes in total.

The former Dutch allrounder, who was part of KKR’s 2014 title winning side, emphasised the need for bowlers to adopt unconventional tactics by bowling “anti-skill,” in order to be successful in the face of aggressive batting strategies.

“You want to bowl with anti-skill. I think, you know, short and wide really works, dragging guys wide and then going straight.” Citing the example of Sam Curran dismissing Phil Salt, he said: “You almost need to catch guys off-guard a little bit like Sam Curran caught Phil Salt off-guard. Set off-side field, he dragged him across and then fire one at leg stump.” “We have to come up with innovative ways. We have to keep changing literally ball by ball. I don’t think you can bowl two balls the same. I don’t think you can bowl bowlers back-to-back anymore unless they really have a grip on the game.

“It’s all in the batter’s favour. The challenge and the upside for bowlers to not punch back is really there,” he added.

The previous record chase in T20 was by South Africa against the West Indies in Centurion in 2023 when they overhauled 259 in 18.5 overs.

In IPL, both the record chases now have come against KKR in the space of 10 days at the same venue of Eden Gardens.

KKR had failed to defend 223/6 with Jos Buttler smashing a 55-ball century to pull off the heist on April 16,.

Dismissing any bowling concern, the KKR assistant coach said there was no point in crying about it as they would have to quickly recover.

“We’re not concerned, but bowling with the new ball and bowling seam, and everything in Kolkata is really tough, and we need to find a way to do better.

“There’s two ways you can look at it. You can step back and say, oh, it’s unfair, we’re bowling machines, or you can say, we are going to find a way and try new things and embrace the challenge “It’s going to be tough, we’re going to get panned all over the show, but you have to find innovative ways. We’ve got four weeks left, it’s going to be around for at least that long, there’s no point crying about it.

“I feel sorry for the bowlers, I think it’s gone even more towards that (batting) side, but those are the realities, and my way of going about it would be to find a way to land a punch back to the batter as quick as possible.” Giving an update on their premier pacer Mitchell Starc, Doeschate said the Aussie left-arm quick may need one or two games to return.

KKR next face Delhi Capitals here on Monday, before taking on Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants in two successive away games.

“As far as I know, he’s very close to being back, which will either be the next game or the game after,” he said.

Impact Sub an opportunity: Prabhsimran

Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran, who came in as an Impact substitute for Arshdeep Singh and blazed his way to his maiden fifty of the season, termed the rule as an opportunity for him.

“I see this as an opportunity for a youngster,” said the diminutive opener.

On the record chase, he said: “We just wanted to cash in on the power play and carry the momentum forward.” For PBKS, the inclusion of Bairstow paid off as he returned to form in style.

“He is such a big player, we all know what he’s capable of. In cricket, you just take one match to recover from your bad form and you saw that today how he dominated the bowlers and struck a century,” added Prabhsimran.

PBKS bettered South Africa’s 259/4 against West Indies in March last year. In the IPL, Rajasthan Royals held the previous record for chasing down 224 against KKR at Eden Gardens recently, equalling the record they had set against then Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in 2020 in Sharjah.

Highest targets successfully chased in Men’s T20 cricket
262 – Punjab Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders, Kolkata, IPL 2024
259 – South Africa vs West Indies, Centurion, 2023
253 – Middlesex vs Surrey, The Oval, T20 Blast 2023
244 – Australia vs New Zealand, Auckland, 2018
243 – Bulgaria vs Serbia, Sofia, 2022
243 – Multan Sultans vs Peshawar Zalmi, Rawalpindi, PSL 2023

:Obscene batting,” commented Kevin Pietersen,

Talking about the match, sent into bat, Kolkata Knight Riders scored 261/6 but PBKS completed the chase with eight balls to spare.

KKR rode on a 138-run partnership between openers Phil Salt (75 off 37 balls) and Sunil Narine (71 off 32 balls).

The batters that followed the openers then consolidated the home team’s position and took them to an imposing total.

In reply, PBKS too were off to a great start and scored 93 runs for the loss of Prabhsimran Singh‘s wicket in the powerplay.

Prabhsimran blazed away to a 20-ball 54 before getting run out. Bairstow continued his brutal onslaught to help PBKS pull off a stunning win. Bairstow (108 off 48 balls) was well-supported by the in-from Shashank Singh who smashed 68 in only 28 balls.

Brief scores: Kolkata Knight Riders: 261/6 in 20 overs (Phil Salt 75, Sunil Narine 71).

Punjab Kings: 262/2 in 18.4 overs (Jonny Bairstow 108, Prabhsimran Singh 54, Shashank Singh 68).
