With no wins in its first six games, Kolkata Knight Riders looked to be headed for a fight to avoid the wooden spoon in IPL 2026. But four wins in a row have brought the franchise’s playoff charge back to life.

Ahead of the contest against Royal Challengers Bengaluru here, assistant coach Shane Watson said it was expected that the team would need some bedding-in time after significant changes to its squad from last year.

“It was always going to take a bit of time to work out where everyone was going to fit into the squad, because there was quite a bit of turnover from last season with the players we got at the auction. Now, we’ve got more of an understanding of what really works for us,” Watson said on Tuesday.

Ace spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, who has regained his mojo in the second part of the campaign, was seen wearing a protective boot in visuals on social media. Watson said the bowler was playing through some discomfort and is being monitored closely by the team.

“He was a bit sore in the second last game and was in a lot of pain in the last one, even though he’s still bowling incredibly well. We’ve got our fingers crossed that he’ll be available for tomorrow [Wednesday], but we’re just not exactly sure,” the coach explained.

Watson also confirmed that Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana was fit and was not featuring in the playing twelve only due to the already settled overseas combination.

Shubman Gill is “ridiculously talented” and he should be able to make adjustments while navigating his way through the different formats and score big runs for India, feels former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson.

Gill, India’s Test and ODI captain, has not scored big in the ongoing white-ball series against Australia. He made 10, 9 and 24 in the three one-dayers, 37 not out, 5 and 15 in the three T20 Internationals so far.

He came to Australia after scoring a hundred and a fifty in three innings in two Tests at home against the West Indies.

The fourth T20I of the five-match series will be played here on Thursday.

“It does take time [to make adjustments], and it’s through trial and error that you really realise exactly what you need to do to make those adjustments, and playing in different conditions as well,” Watson said.

“But Shubman is a ridiculously talented batter. He’s got an amazing technique. It’s not going to take him long at all to be able to really navigate his way through the different formats because when someone is as highly skilled as he is, it’s not going to take him too long.”

Watson conceded that switching formats is not easy but a player gets adapted with more matches under his belt.

“It definitely is a challenge, and the more you do it, the better you get at really understanding the little adjustments that you have to make to your technique, to your game plan, your mindset around each format to be able to then get into the best version of you every time you have to make that adjustment,” said the 44-year-old who played 59 Tests, 190 ODIs and 58 T20Is for Australia between 2002 to 2016.

Watson was all praise for India’s explosive opening batter Abhishek Sharma, who has taken T20 cricket by storm.

“He is an absolute treat to watch. He’s incredibly good, isn’t he? He is so fearless, but then he’s got the skill to be able to adapt to whatever’s required as well,” Watson said.

“It’s been special to see his evolution over the last two or three years, from when he first came in, got opportunities for Sunrisers Hyderabad. And then seeing him just continue to explode like he has. He’s got all the different gears, he’s got all the different shots against different bowlers in different conditions as well.”

The 25-year-old Abhishek played a major role in India’s Asia Cup triumph and has scored 19, 68 and 25 in the three T20I matches so far against Australia.

Former all-rounder Shane Watson has advised the Australian team to avoid getting into confrontations with Virat Kohli in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as he feels the intensity the celebrated Indian batter derives from provocations brings the best out of him.

Going through a lean run of form, Kohli has enjoyed great success in Australia in the past and will look to regain his touch in the five-match Test series, which gets underway on Friday (November 22, 2024) at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

Provoking the Indian batting mainstay has often proved to be counterproductive for the Australians, and Watson has experienced it himself.

“The one thing that I know of Virat is… because the fire burns so brightly and deep inside him, the intensity he brings to every ball that he is engaged in a game has been superhuman,” Watson was quoted as saying on the Willow Talk podcast.

“But, there have been in recent times where moments in this career that fire has started to go out because it is just so hard to maintain that intensity in every moment he is involved in a game.

“And, that is where Australia have to leave him alone and hope he doesn’t bring the intensity — nine out of 10 intensity — to every ball.” Kohli has played 13 Tests in Australia since 2011, amassing 1,352 runs at an average of 54.08, including six centuries and four fifties, with a top score of 169.

While this would be his fifth tour Down Under in the longest format, Kohli’s best outing came during the 2014-15 series when he aggregated 692 runs in four Tests at an average of 86.50, including four hundreds and a half-century.

These remarkable numbers are not lost on Watson.

“We have seen that when he has had success in Australia, he is up and above for everything in the middle. Every ball he is up for every single moment.

“You can see the fierce intensity that he brings, and if he gets that, then it shuts everything else out. That is when he is at his absolute best.

“If there is stuff happening around and that intensity is not there, that is when you will see the not-so-best version of Virat. So from an Australian perspective, let’s hope we get to see that version of him,” Watson said.

Kohli’s performance in the red-ball format this year has been below par, managing just 70 runs in six Tests at an average of 22.72.

‘Smith wasn’t actually batting at his best as an opener’

When the discussion turned to Australian batting, Watson backed Steve Smith to bring the very best of him against the formidable Indian bowling attack.

Smith will be back at his usual number four slot after struggling as opener following the retirement of David Warner.

“Steve wanted to open. He was super keen to take up a new challenge. But, one thing with that opportunity he had was he wasn’t actually batting at his best at that time,” Watson noted.

“So, he got an opportunity to open, and Steve Smith at his very best would have made the most out of it because he just loves scoring runs, whether it is opening or at No. 4. You could see it a few times he got out when he was opening – his game and his technique was a little bit off.” For the marquee series against fierce rivals India, the Australian selectors have picked 25-year-old uncapped Nathan McSweeney to open the innings alongside Usman Khawaja.
