New Delhi:

Bangladesh’s veteran left-arm spin all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan said he is unsure of being a part of the side’s tour of India happening later this year. Bangladesh are scheduled to play two Tests and three T20Is against India from September 19 to October 12, with Chennai, Kanpur, Dharamshala, New Delhi and Hyderabad being host cities. Their trip to India will happen following their two-match Test tour of Pakistan in August. After playing in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, Shakib is set to play for the Los Angeles Knight Riders in the upcoming Major League Cricket (MLC) season two in the USA, beginning on July 5.

“I don’t have many plans. There are two T20 tournaments in front of me. One is MLC and the other one is the Global T20 League in Canada, and let me see where I stand after playing these two tournaments because I need to understand (how I feel).”

“There is international cricket and there is a series against Pakistan and I am planning till that point of time and not planning beyond that. Now I don’t have time to plan for three-four years and so planning for three to six months is better, and later I will think about my next plan. For now, I am planning till the Pakistan series,” said Shakib to reporters at the Airport before departing for the USA.

Shakib also revealed fast-bowler Taskin Ahmed apologised to his teammates for missing the game against India after he missed the team bus and reached late for the Super Eights clash at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

Interestingly, on Tuesday, Taskin said to Dhaka-based newspaper Ajker Patrika that missing the team bus was not a reason for him missing the match against India. “The team bus starts at a certain point and there is a rule for cricketers that team bus does not stop for anyone and if anyone misses it in that case he comes in the next car.”

“The manager’s car or a taxi is there and the support of transport was difficult in the West Indies. When Taskin arrived it was five to 10 minutes before the toss and certainly it was difficult to pick him at that point in the team and it was difficult for him as well.”

“Taskin apologized to the team for that afterwards and everyone in the team took it normally because a man can mistake and anyone can commit unintentional mistake. He accepted it and the thing ended at that point of time,” concluded Shakib.

Following his side’s eight-run defeat against Afghanistan in the Super Eights match of the T20 World Cup 2024, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto said that they made poor decisions while batting in the middle overs. Najmul Hossain Shanto displayed a poor performance in the second innings of the match. He scored 5 runs from 5 balls at a strike rate of 100.00. The Bangladesh skipper just slammed 1-four during his time on the crease. Speaking after the match, Shanto said that their plan was to go hard in the first six overs of the second innings. He also accepted that the middle order of Bangladesh’s batting lineup failed to execute.

He further added that the Bangladesh bowling attack performed well throughout the tournament.

“I think we bowled really well, we did lots of good things but as a batting unit, we made poor decisions, especially in the middle overs and that’s what cost us today. The plan was to go hard in the first six overs, if we lost early wickets, the plan was to bat normally, but that didn’t happen and the middle-order couldn’t execute. The whole tournament we have bowled really well, both the pacers and the spinners. Especially Rishad was great, the fast bowlers also did really well. Also, as a fielding group, we did well,” Shanto said.

Recapping the match, after winning the toss Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan decided to bat against Bangladesh.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (43 runs from 55 balls, 3 fours and 1 six) played a stupendous knock for the Afghan side and powered them to 115-5. Ibrahim Zadran (18 runs from 29 balls, 1 four) and Rashid Khan (19* runs from 10 balls, 3 sixes) tried their best in the final stage of the first inning and added some crucial runs on the scoreboard.

Rishad Hossain led the Bangladesh bowling attack after he picked up three wickets and gave 26 runs in his four-over spell.

The second inning of the match was reduced to 19 overs, and the target was 114 runs after rain played a spoilsport in the second inning.

During the run chase, Litton Das (54* runs from 49 balls, 5 fours, and 1 six) was the only standout batter for the Tigers as he scored the highest among his teammates.

Naveen-ul-Haq and Rashid Khan picked up four wickets each in their respective spells. Fazalhaq Farooqi and Gulbadin Naib also bagged one wicket each in their respective spells and helped the Afghan side win the match by eight runs.

After the defeat, Mitchell Marsh-led Australia are also out of the tournament. The Aussies ended up in third place in the Group 1 table of the Super Eights with just two points.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Sunday announced that the national side will play seven red-ball games to prepare for a ‘gruelling Test schedule’ and to shift focus from T20Is to the World Test Championship (WTC), as per ESPNcricinfo. Bangladesh will play Test series against South Africa, West Indies, Pakistan and India in their 2023-25 WTC cycle. The Test players will feature in the three four-day games in Chattogram next month while the home contests will be followed by two four-day matches against Pakistan A in Darwin from July 19 to 29. The Bangladesh A team will travel to Pakistan to play two four-day matches in August. In addition, New Zealand A plans to visit Bangladesh in August or September.

Since May, Bangladesh players have attended training camps in Chattogram and Sylhet. Jalal Yunus, BCB’s cricket operations chairman, stated that the Test players are “progressing well” at the camps and that the four-day games against tough opponents will benefit them in the WTC matches.

“We can give them the best preparation ahead of the gruelling Test schedule in the coming months. The rest is up to the players. I have been following the Bangladesh Tigers camp, which is going well,” Jalal Yunus said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

The Bangladesh senior men’s squad is expected to travel to Pakistan on August 17 for two Tests, the locations and dates of which have yet to be announced. After Pakistan, they will play two Tests against India in Chennai and Kanpur, followed by three Twenty20 Internationals.

As per ESPNcricinfo, Bangladesh might tour India twice in three months if the BCB agrees to the Afghanistan Cricket Board’s amended schedule of two white-ball matches in late July. The ACB has proposed playing three ODIs and three T20Is at Greater Noida as part of their new itinerary.

The tour was originally postponed in March bearing in mind Bangladesh’s workload in 2024, but now that the Champions Trophy is now on their calendar, the BCB is considering this tour because they only have three ODIs scheduled.

Bangladesh’s seasoned all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan became the first player to take 50 wickets in the T20 World Cup. On a night when Bangladesh were outplayed in all facets of the game by their neighbours, India, Shakib managed to etch his name in the history books. Shakib was expensive in his three-over spell, giving away 37 runs at an economy of 12.30. His sole wicket in the game was of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. The 37-year-old lured Rohit to slog the ball away. He pulled out a thick outside edge, and the ball landed safely in the hands of Jaker Ali.

Rohit became Shakib’s 50th victim in the T20 World Cup, making him the first player to claim 50 scalps in his 42nd match in the marquee event.

The player closest to Shakib’s tally is former Pakistan hard-hitter Shahid Afridi. During his playing days, the former all-rounder picked up 39 wickets in the T20 World Cup.

The third position is occupied by Sri Lanka’s iconic speedster, Lasith Malinga. Known for his searing yorkers, Malinga took 38 wickets in the T20 World Cup.

Sri Lanka captain Wanindu Hasaranga is close to becoming the leading wicket-taker for the Lions in the stellar event.

He is one wicket shy of levelling Malinga’s tally. Hasaranga could have achieved the feat in the ongoing edition of the event. However, Sri Lanka got knocked out in the group stage, and he will need to wait for the 2026 edition to rewrite history.

Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal occupies the fifth spot with 36 scalps in 23 games.

Despite scripting history, Shakib’s side fell short against India. Bangladesh won the toss and put India to bat.

Hardik Pandya’s unbeaten 50 off 27 deliveries, along with valuable contributions from Virat Kohli (37), Shivam Dube (34) and Rishabh Pant (36), powered India to a competitive total of 196/5.

In reply, apart from skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto’s valiant 40, the rest of the Bangladesh batters failed to deliver.

Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Sigh and Kuldeep Yadav bamboozled Bangladesh batters to seal a comprehensive 50-run win.

Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan hit out at the Tigers’ lack of “fight” after a 50-run rout by India effectively ended their T20 World Cup dreams. Saturday’s mauling was Bangladesh’s second defeat in the Super Eights after an opening loss to Australia. “We were always thinking that we came to do something good and we will do it,” said former skipper Shakib who was playing in his 128th T20 international. “But if you look at the result or the performance on the ground, actually we couldn’t show any fight in that way. It’s disappointing.”

Chasing 197 to win, Bangladesh stumbled to 146-8 in their 20 overs against India with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto top scoring with 40.

Making runs has been a problem for Bangladesh throughout the tournament with Towhid Hridoy their top run-getter with a modest 139 across six innings.

Shakib was the only player to make a 50 when he hit an undefeated 64 in the first round victory against the Netherlands.

“I don’t know how long it will take,” said the 37-year-old Shakib when asked to put a timeframe on Bangladesh winning a world title.

“When we played with two big teams, who were maybe the closest contenders for the World Cup, our gap with them was clearly visible.

“So, it is disappointing to me that we still have such huge gaps.”

Shakib made his international debut in 2006 and has also played in 67 Tests and 247 one-dayers. He has amassed more than 19,500 runs and taken over 700 wickets.

However, he will not make any hasty decisions on whether he will call time on his Bangladesh career.

“If the team think that they need me, and if I think that I need the team and I am feeling desired in that way then it is a matter of playing for the team,” he said.

“Otherwise, if I am not enjoying then of course, I will not play. When it’s time everyone will come to know about it.”

India continued their winning momentum in the ongoing T20 World Cup as they defeated Bangladesh in a Super 8 match on Saturday. Asked to bat first, India posted a whopping total of 196/5 with vice-captain Hardik Pandya smashing a half-century. Later, Kuldeep Yadav‘s three-wicket haul and the contributions from other bowlers helped Rohit Sharma and Co restrict Bangladesh to 146/8 and claim a win by 50 runs. As India put up a dominating show, skipper Rohit Sharma looked a bit stress-free during Bangladesh’s chase and ended up giving a hilarious moment to his fans.

During the 14th over, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan smashed a six off Kuldeep Yadav’s delivery and got dismissed on the very next ball. Mahmudullah was the next batter in and Kuldeep troubled him from the very first delivery with his special googly.

Seeing this, Kuldeep asked for a change in the fielding placement. Rohit, who is widely popular for his hilarious on-field comments, came forward and said, “Kya hai, khelne de na yaar, abhi abhi aya hai aada maarne de na, ek out hua hai aada maarne de” (What’s it, let him play across the line, he has just come to the crease after a dismissal, let him play across the line).

This incident went viral on social media and left the fans is splits. The India skipper never fails to show his witty side as earlier also he entertained the fans with his “Garden mein jo ghoomega” comment during the Test series against England.

“I have been talking about this for a long time now. It’s about going there and putting that into work. Considering everything we played really well, adapted to the conditions. There’s a little bit of wind factor here, overall we are very smart, overall we were good with bat and ball. All eight batters need to play their role, whatever it is,” said Rohit after India’s victory.

“We saw one guy get 50 and we got 197, in T20 I don’t believe we need to get fifties and hundreds, what matters is the pressure you put on the bowlers. All the batters from the word go played like that and that’s how we want to play as well. There is a lot of experience in the squad and we back them,” he added.

Team India will now be squaring off against Australia in their next T20 World Cup 2024, Super 8 match on Monday.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto acknowledged that his batters have been underperforming in the T20 World Cup but promised better showings with the bat in their remaining Super Eights matches including the next one against India. Bangladesh produced their best-ever showing at the T20 World Cup as they won three matches in the group stage to qualify for the Super Eights. But the Tigers were handed a 28-run DLS defeat by Australia in their opening Super Eight fixture. They take on India next.

“The next two matches are important. There is a lot to gain from them. If we can win them, we will be in a better condition. We will play to win every match,” Shanto said at the post-match press conference.

Bangladesh posted 140/8 in their 20 overs in yet another underwhelming batting display.

“Yes, there was big difference in the condition because last match there was a lot of spin and also seam but today the wicket looked flat… a very good wicket to bat and I think we didn’t bat well, so I think that is the big difference, probably we should have targeted 160 to 170.

“I think as a player we had to adjust but we couldn’t execute with that new ball, especially in the power play and we couldn’t finish last five-six overs, so we lost too many wickets, so if it ended well, we could have scored a proper 160 or 170,” he added.

Expectations were after their pre-tournament series loss to USA, but they made it out of a difficult group.

Asked why the team is struggling in batting, Shanto said, “It is difficult to say why we are not able to play. I think everyone has the capability, people have played well in different places in the past.

“But I do not have an answer to why this is not happening. Everyone has the freedom to play their natural game and they will try to play as they want, but somehow it is not happening.”

Australia’s Marcus Stoinis on Wednesday toppled Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi as the number one all-rounder in the latest ICC T20 rankings. Stoinis snared six wickets and also made valuable contribution with the bat to help Australia cruise to the Super Eights in the ongoing T20 World Cup. While Stoinis climbs a spot to become the premier all-rounder, Nabi dropped three places with Sri Lanka skipper Wanindu Hasaranga and Bangladesh veteran Shakib Al Hasan also rising to the second and third spot respectively.

West Indies’ bowlers have shone the brightest so far in the tournament and the rankings reflect that.

Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein has moved six places to be second in the bowlers’ list led by England spinner Adil Rashid.

Alzarri Joseph has also moved up six spaces to 11th, while teammate Gudakesh Motie has surged 16 spots up the rankings into 13th.

India’s Suryakumar Yadav retained his spot as the top-ranked batter in the shortest format with Phil Salt, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are static on second third and fourth respectively.

Australian opener Travis Head is up five places to fifth, while West Indies wicketkeeper batter Nicholas Pooran has jumped eight places to 11th.

West Indies’ Sherfane Rutherford leapfrogged 43 places to 42nd.
