Pakistan’s red-ball format head coach, Jason Gillespie has urged former cricketers to avoid unwarranted criticism of the national team as he believes it can deeply affect the players. Gillespie admitted that the comments former players made in TV shows and Youtube channels indeed bruised the cricketers. “I’m very protective of players and very protective of staff I work with and just want to make sure that the environment that we’re trying to create is a safe space for everyone and if that gets eroded then that can lead to a bit of frustration,” Gillespie told Sky Sports.

The former Australian quick asked the players of yesteryears to be more judicious while airing their opinion, especially in social media.

“A lot of former players have their own space on social media – YouTube, whatever, and they’re paid to have an opinion. One thing that I have noticed here is that the players notice everything and if they get some positive feedback from former players they idolised as kids, that goes a long way when they get some positive reinforcement.

“But it can have the opposite effect too if there’s a lot of criticism by those former players,” he added.

Gillespie also admitted that he felt frustrated over his reduced role as the head coach.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had stripped Gillespie and Test skipper Shan Masood their place in the selection committee, besides taking away the say in pitch preparation.

“I think there’s always frustration from time to time. For me, when I came on board with Pakistan cricket, I was told there was a long-term plan, and we need to make sure our communication’s spot on.

“I made that a real focus and so you can get frustrated if those things aren’t done how you would like,” Gillespie said.

The New South Welshman admitted that the recent changes in the selection panel have limited his influence.

“It wasn’t what I signed up for, I’ll be completely honest. But this is one of those situations in which you just need to go with the flow. As I said, I’m in a different environment and things are done differently.

“One can agree or disagree with how things are done, but, ultimately, I’m here to help the Pakistan team do well – help the players get better. So, I’ve put all my focus and energy into that,” he said.

Gillespie said the fact that PCB has already formed the third selection panel since his appointment as head coach was an indication of a different environment.

“Since I’ve been involved, we’re already on our third selection panel. These are the things you just have to take it in your stride and understand that we’re in a different environment and go with the flow.

“I ask a lot of questions and ask for clarity, which as head coach I’m well within my rights to ask,” he said. PTI Corr UNG 7/21/2024

‘Removing Shaheen Afridi From Pakistan’s T20I Captaincy Was Unjust’: 1992 World Cup Winner https://artifex.news/removing-shaheen-afridi-from-pakistans-t20i-captaincy-was-unjust-1992-world-cup-winner-6559161/ Sat, 14 Sep 2024 02:19:48 +0000 https://artifex.news/removing-shaheen-afridi-from-pakistans-t20i-captaincy-was-unjust-1992-world-cup-winner-6559161/ Read More “‘Removing Shaheen Afridi From Pakistan’s T20I Captaincy Was Unjust’: 1992 World Cup Winner” »

The captaincy shuffle in Pakistan cricket team has become a major talking point in the past few months. Babar Azam had relinquished his responsibility as Pakistan skipper across formats after the end of the 2023 ODI World Cup. After him, Shaheen Afridi was named the captain in T20Is while Shan Masood took over the duties in Test cricket. Under Shaheen, Pakistan lost 4-1 to New Zealand just ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup and the pacer was stripped of his role, with Babar being reinstated as white-ball captain.

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Moin Khan, who was also a part of the 1992 ODI World Cup-winning team, said that removing Shaheen as T20I captain was “unjust” and he should have been given more time.

“Shaheen Afridi has the ability to lead the team and is highly liked by the players. He is an excellent choice for captaincy in T20s. In white-ball cricket, I don’t see anyone else suitable for the role. Removing him from the captaincy was unjust. He is one of the best T20 players, and I’ve noticed his performance has slightly declined since he was removed from the captaincy. How can you expect good performance if you don’t give players confidence? They should be given some time as captain,” Moin told Cricket Pakistan.

Some media reports have claimed that Babar Azam could be replaced by Mohammad Rizwan as white-ball captain of Pakistan.

“A single captain can be appointed for all formats of cricket, but it’s crucial for any player to perform across all formats to achieve this. Whoever becomes captain should have the responsibility for a long term. There is no doubt about Mohammad Rizwan’s abilities; any criticism against him might be due to his age. It’s also important to consider how long he can represent the team if given leadership. Mohammad Rizwan could be a great short-term captain, but you would need to groom a young cricketer to take over in the future. We often appoint captains but fail to prepare a suitable deputy,” Moin added.

Pakistan cricket is not having a good time, be it on or off the ground. While the side suffered an embarrassing 2-0 loss to Bangladesh in the recently-concluded Test series, there were also rumours about the team having cracks in it. A video involving Pakistan captain Shan Masood and star pacer Shaheen Afridi had gone viral on social media after the first Test and the internet speculated that all was not well between the duo. In the video, Shan was standing next to Shaheen during a team hurdle when the latter removed the former’s arms from his shoulders. After Pakistan’s series loss to Bangladesh, Masood has cleared the air on the incident.

“No. There is nothing like that,” said Masood when he was asked to comment on the rumours that he would be stepping down from his role of Pakistan Test captain after the side’s loss to Bangladesh.

“There also came a (rumour/misunderstanding) that I kept my hand on Shaheen’s shoulder and he removed it. He wasn’t angry with me, he actually injured his shoulder by Rana’s delivery. I kept my hand at the same injury point,” said Masood at the press conference after the second Test.

Another video of Masood had gone viral in which he was seen having a heated conversation with Pakistan head coach Jason Gillespie in the dressing room.

Explaining the incident, Masood said, “Then came a (report) that I was fuming at Gillespie. Our second new ball that was 8 overs old went out of the ground after Litton Das hit a six. However, the replacement ball that we got was 18 to 19 overs old. We were saying that we should have been given a new ball rather. I was complaining about that. This is the reason we try to social media less during games.”

Pakistan pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi said his heart is full and he will forever be thankful to his wife Ansha Afridi after the couple welcomed their first child – Aliyaar. Taking to social media, Shaheen, expressed his gratitude to his supporters for extending their wishes on the addition of a new member to his family. “This moment changes everything! My heart is full and my life just got a whole lot better. 24/08/2024 will always be special to us. Welcome to the world my son, Aliyaar Afridi. I am grateful for all the lovely wishes and prayers coming our way. Remember my little family in your prayers,” Shaheen wrote in the post.

Shaheen, who is part of the Pakistan squad for the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh, joined his family in Karachi on Sunday after the hosts endured a 10-wicket heavy defeat in Rawalpindi.

The pace spearhead was part of the playing 11 that failed to keep their winless Test record against Bangladesh. As per Pakistan media reports, the pacer will rejoin the squad before the start of the second Test in Rawalpindi on August 30.

Shaheen engaged to Ansha, the second-eldest daughter of former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, in 2021. Their nikah was held in a private ceremony in February last year, followed by a week of wedding celebrations and Ansha’s rukhsati in September 2023.

Report Says Star Furious” »

There is a fresh controversy that is reportedly brewing between Shaheen Afridi and the Pakistan Cricket Board. And a statement put out by the cricket board on its website, on behalf of Afridi, is at the centre of it. In the said statement, Afridi, who was stripped off Pakistan’s white ball captaincy, on Sunday proclaimed his full-fledged support to Babar Azam, who was handed back the leadership role ahead of the T20 World Cup in June.

Afridi led Pakistan in a solitary T20I series against New Zealand before the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided to give back the T20I and ODI reins to Babar. The elegant batter had stepped down from captaincy after the team failed to reach the knockout stages of last year’s 50-over World Cup. Shan Masood will continue as Pakistan Test captain.

The statement read: “It was an absolute honour to captain the Pakistan National Cricket Team. I will always cherish the memories and the opportunity. As a team player, it is my duty to back our captain, Babar Azam,” Afridi said in a statement issued by the PCB.

“I have played under his captaincy and have nothing but respect for him. I will try to help him on and off the field. We are all one. Our aim is the same, to help Pakistan become the best team in the world,” he added.

In  the same statement, Babar said he will lean on Afridi to exploit his tactical understanding of the game.

“It was a pleasure to play under Shaheen’s leadership. He is still young and is improving as a player and as a leader every day. As a captain, I have always valued his input and I will keep consulting him for important decisions going forward.

“We must take advantage of his strategic understanding of the game. Our joint aim is to make this team the best in the world,” said Babar.

Now, a report in ESPNCricinfohas claimed that Afridi is furious as he did not make any such statement. The report claimed that the said statement was put out by the PCB without the permission of the fast bowler. The report further added that Afridi was about to make release a personal statement on the ‘fake’ quote was stopped after an emergency meeting by the PCB. Another meeting with PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi and Afridi has been organised, said the report.

Shubman Gill was definitely at his best during the crucial Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match against Pakistan at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday. The right-handed batter took a single off the first ball he faced but later on he went berserk and star Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi was at the receiving end. Gill hit a four off the second ball he faced in his innings and went on hit more two fours in the over that was bowled by Shaheen. However, that was not the end. When Shaheen came to bowl again, Gill smashed him for three fours — for the second time in the game — to make it another big over for India.

That forced Pakistan captain Babar Azam to remove Shaheen from the attack.

Soon after Gill’s show against the star bowler, the fans filled social media with a lot of memes trolling the left-arm Pakistan pacer Shaheen.

Watch some of the memes here:

Gill raced to his half-century in only 37 balls. It was his eighth fifty in the format.

Shaheen eventually got the wicket of Gill on the latter’s score of 58 off 52 balls.

KL Rahul made his return after being named in India’s playing XI for the blockbuster Asia Cup Super 4 clash against Pakistan. Rahul, who has been out of action since May 2023 due to a hamstring issue, replaced Shreyas Iyer in the playing XI, with Jasprit Bumrah also coming in place of Mohammed Shami.

This comes after reports emerged that Rahul will replace in-form wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan in the XI. Kishan scored 82 in the group stage match against Pakistan, which was washed out due to rain last week.

At the toss, Rohit confirmed both Rahul and Kishan will play against Pakistan.

“Looking to bat first. There will be a challenge upfront, but the way we guys batted last time around gives us confidence. Every game is important for us, but one thing at a time to focus on. (On rain delays) That’s the nature of the sport, it gave us good time to prepare and now we’ll look to play well. Two changes – Bumrah is back and one forced change, Shreyas Iyer just got a back spasm so KL Rahul comes in for him,” Rohit said at the toss.
