Luka Jovic scored with a last-gasp header to snatch an equaliser for Serbia in a 1-1 draw with Slovenia on Thursday, keeping both teams in contention for a place in the last 16 of Euro 2024. Slovenia looked on course for their first ever win at the tournament after Zan Karnicnik put them ahead in the second half, but Jovic glanced in a corner in the fifth minute of stoppage time to haul Serbia level. The result leaves Slovenia on two points from two games in Group C going into their clash with England on Tuesday, while Serbia have one point ahead of their final match in the group against Denmark.

Serbia coach Dragan Stojkovic, who felt his team showed England “too much respect” in their opening 1-0 defeat, recalled captain Dusan Tadic in one of three changes, with Filip Kostic ruled out due to injury.

Stojkovic incidentally played in Yugoslavia’s 3-3 draw with Slovenia in the group stage at Euro 2000, Slovenia’s only other appearance at the tournament.

But it was Slovenia, coming off a creditable 1-1 draw against Euro 2020 semi-finalists Denmark in their first game, who created the early chances.

Adam Gnezda Cerin drove straight at Predrag Rajkovic from distance before the Serbia goalkeeper used his legs well to save from Jan Mlakar.

After mustering a solitary shot on target against England, Serbia’s strike pair Dusan Vlahovic and Aleksandar Mitrovic both went close.

Vlahovic’s diving header drew an easy save from Jan Oblak, with Mitrovic unable to connect with Tadic’s teasing corner yards out as he grappled with a defender.

Timi Max Elsnik rattled the post after skipping his way into the Serbia area following a favourable bounce off an opponent and Benjamin Sesko scooped over the rebound.

Oblak, who produced a crucial stop to keep Slovenia in the game before they equalised against Denmark, pulled off another similar save just before half-time to deny Mitrovic from inside the six-yard box.

Mitrovic again found his route to goal blocked by Oblak minutes into the second half, with Slovenia defender Jaka Bijol lucky not to slice a cross into his own net.

A header from Mitrovic deflected just over as Serbia started to impose themselves on the game, but Sesko kept Rajkovic busy with a curling attempt.

Karnicnik started and finished the move that led to Slovenia’s goal, winning the ball back deep in his half and igniting the counter-attack that culminated in him stabbing in Elsnik’s cross from the left.

Mitrovic’s luck deserted him as the Al Hilal forward whacked the crossbar, his half-volley from Andrija Zivkovic‘s delivery taking a vital touch off Karnicnik.

Lazar Samardzic stroked wide as Serbia desperately pushed for an equaliser, their prayers answered as Jovic turned in a corner with the final act of the match.

England started off their Euro 2024 campaign with a victory against Serbia on Sunday at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen. In the thrilling encounter, it was Jude Bellingham, who turned out to be star player for the Three Lions as he scored the decisive goal. He took just 13 minutes to underline the point in the Group C opener. However, a violent altercation took place between the fans of England and Serbia, ahead of this match, which grabbed everyone’s attention.

Some fans of Albania were also involved in the violent clash, which took place in a bar in Gelsenkirchen. As per the reports, the Albanian fans started the altercation against Serbian fans, who are their arch-rivals.

Moments later, England fans also got involved and it turned out to be a big mass brawl. Many videos and images of the incident got viral on social media, showing broken tables, chairs, and glass bottles.

“There was a sudden burst of violence. It came out of nowhere. It was unclear who started what. But to me it seemed liked a group of England fans rushed the bar where Serbs were drinking and it all kicked off with tables, chairs and bottles thrown,” MailOnline quoted an eye witness as saying.

“One man had blood pouring from a head wound – he was English I believe,” the eye witness further stated.

The match between England and Serbia was later declared as “high risk” by German police, due to this clash which saw seven Serbian fans taken into custody.

Talking about the match, Bellingham started the move in midfield with a measured pass to Kyle Walker before sprinting into the penalty area to meet Bukayo Saka’s cross with a superb diving header that arrowed into the net from six yards.

After being mobbed by his team-mates, Bellingham showed his comfort in the spotlight, soaking up the adulation of the England supporters with his arms outstretched before running to the centre circle to whip up the fans at the other end.

Scoring England’s first goal of a major tournament is nothing new to Bellingham, who headed their opener against Iran at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Jude Bellingham got England’s Euro 2024 campaign off to a winning start but a 1-0 victory over Serbia in Gelsenkirchen failed to dispel doubts over the Three Lions’ quest to become European champions for the first time. Bellingham was in a class of his own in Gelsenkirchen as the Real Madrid midfielder’s header on 13 minutes capped a fine individual display. But collectively England failed to match the standards Germany and Spain showed in romping to victory in their opening matches.

Expectations on England ahead of a major tournament have rarely ever been higher but they had won just one of their previous five matches, including a 1-0 defeat to Iceland in their final warm-up match before jetting out to Germany.

Restored to full strength, it appeared all would be alright on the night for Gareth Southgate in a dominant start from the Euro 2020 finalists.

Serbia coach Dragan Stojkovic hailed Bellingham as a future Ballon d’Or winner on the eve of the game and he put on a show to justify his status as arguably the world’s best player on current form.

The 20-year-old played with the swagger of a newly-crowned Champions League winner as he had the Serbian midfield chasing shadows.

“I feel like in every game I can make an impact. I can decide a game,” said Bellingham.

“It’s a release for me to play football. It’s my favourite thing in the world, so I don’t feel any pressure when I go out there.”

Bellingham also showed his physical prowess to open the scoring on 13 minutes.

He started the move before bursting into the box to meet Bukayo Saka’s deflected cross with a powerful header into the top corner.

Kane frustrated

England were dominant in the first 45 minutes without ever threatening to cut loose.

Kyle Walker had the best chance to double their lead before the break when he pulled an effort wide after a lung-bursting run into the Serbian box from right-back.

The second period was a different story as England sat on their lead and were lucky not to be punished.

Southgate’s men came into the tournament with question marks over their defence due to the absence of Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw‘s lack of match practice.

Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi stepped into Maguire’s shoes, but had a moment to forget as was outpaced by Dusan Vlahovic and Filip Mladenovic failed to connect with the Juventus striker’s cross.

Mitrovic then saw an optimistic penalty claim waived away and Luka Jovic failed to take Dusan Tadic‘s pass in his stride with another decent chance.

“Second half we didn’t keep it as well as I would have liked but to get the win is very important,” said Southgate.

“We had to suffer a bit. I think to defend the box the way we did was really good for us.”

Southgate turned to his bench to stem the tide with the introduction of Conor Gallagher and Jarrod Bowen.

Bowen made an instant impact as from his cross Harry Kane‘s header was brilliantly turned onto the bar by Serbia goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic.

That was Kane’s only significant impact in the opposition box on a frustrating night for the Bayern Munich striker.

Indeed, Kane’s most telling touch came at the other end moments later to head away Veljko Birmancevic’s goalbound shot.

Jordan Pickford was also forced into his one and only save late from Vlahovic’s dipping drive.

But England held on to start with three points if not the statement of intent expected from pre-tournament favourites.

A U.N. resolution sponsored by Germany and Rwanda to establish an annual day to commemorate the 1995 genocide of more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslims by Bosnian Serbs has sparked protests and a strong lobbying campaign against its adoption by Serbia’s President and the Bosnian Serb leadership.

The U.N. General Assembly has scheduled a debate on the resolution on the morning of May 23 to be followed by a vote in the 193-member world body.

The final draft of the resolution would designate July 11 as the “International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenca,” to be observed annually starting in two months. The massacres started on July 11, 1995.

The draft asks the United Nations to prepare an outreach programme and invites countries, organisations, civil society and others to observe the day with special observances and activities in memory and honour of the victims as well as “appropriate education and public awareness-raising activities”.

The Srebrenica killings were the bloody crescendo of Bosnia’s 1992-95 war, which came after the breakup of Yugoslavia unleashed nationalist passions and territorial ambitions that set Bosnian Serbs against the country’s two other main ethnic populations, Croats and Muslim Bosniaks.

On July 11, 1995, Bosnian Serbs overran a UN-protected safe area in Srebrenica. They separated at least 8,000 Muslim Bosniak men and boys from their wives, mothers and sisters and slaughtered them. Those who tried to escape were chased through the woods and over the mountains around the ill-fated town.

The International Court of Justice, the UN’s highest tribunal, determined in 2007 that the acts committed in Srebrenica constituted genocide, and the court’s determination is included in the draft resolution. It was Europe’s first genocide since the Nazi Holocaust in World War II, which killed an estimated 6 million Jews and people from other minorities.

Serbia’s populist President Aleksandar Vucic as well as the Bosnian Serb leadership have vehemently opposed the adoption of the Srebrenica resolution, saying it brands all Serbs as a “genocidal nation” although the draft does not mention Serbs as culprits.

Mr. Vucic and his government have been campaigning both at the UN and among developing countries to win support for a “No” vote. They say they have already gained a majority against the resolution. Approval requires a majority of those voting.

Mr. Vucic as well as Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik have mentioned several times the possibility of having to pay war damages if the resolution is adopted. Local analysts say Serb leaders, including Mr. Vukic, also fear they could be put on trial for active participation in the bloodshed.

The draft resolution condemns “without reservation any denial of the Srebrenica genocide as a historical event”. It also “condemns without reservation actions that glorify those convicted of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide by international courts, including those responsible for the Srebrenica genocide.” Bosnian Serb wartime political leader Radovan Karadzic and his military commander, Ratko Mladic, were both convicted of genocide in Srebrenica by a special UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands. In all, the tribunal and courts in the Balkans have sentenced close to 50 Bosnian Serb wartime officials to lengthy prison terms.

However, most Serbian and Bosnian Serb officials still celebrate Mr. Karadzic and Mr. Mladic as national heroes. They continue to downplay or even deny the Srebrenica killings, which has deeply offended relatives of the massacre victims and survivors.

At a meeting with Dodik in Budapest on May 15, Hungary Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said his country will vote against the resolution. He called the genocide the “Srebrenica tragedy” and said the resolution “intentionally or unintentionally would demonize the entire Serbian nation” and inflame tensions in the surrounding region.

The upcoming vote was also raised at a regular UN Security Council meeting on political and economic developments in Bosnia on May 15

U.S. Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood said, “Dodik’s dangerous actions and secessionist rhetoric threaten peace and stability in the region” and “genocide denial also prevents reconciliation”.

“Commemorating historical truths and accepting facts is important and moves the region forward on a path towards reconciliation,” Mr. Wood said. “And honouring the victims of genocide reinforces the values reflected in the UN Charter.” But Russian UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, whose country has strong ties to Serbia and the Bosnian Serbs, said the introduction of the resolution without the consent of all Bosnian parties was a violation of the country’s constitution and the 1995 Dayton peace agreement which ended the war.

“We view this provocative text as a threat to peace and security in the country and in the region as a whole,” he said, accusing Germany and Rwanda of sparking protests instead of promoting reconciliation.

Chinese Deputy UN Ambassador Geng Shuang reiterated Beijing’s call for the sponsors to engage with key parties and member states to reach consensus on the draft resolution. He said there are still “major differences” and “forcing it through is inconsistent with the spirit of promoting reconciliation” within Bosnia and among countries in the region.

Germany and Rwanda have said they would seriously consider proposals by Serbia to change the text.

Experts on Sunday removed a bomb left over in a southern Serbian city from the 1999 NATO bombing of the country, prompting the evacuation of more than a thousand residents, officials said.

The 1,000-kilo (2,200-pound) bomb was successfully removed from a construction site in the neighbourhood of Nis, an interior ministry official said.

“It is being transported to a safe location where it will be destroyed”, official Luka Causic told reporters.

Before the removal of the bomb, 1,300 residents of the area where it was found were evacuated for their safety, he added.

Police, firefighters and medical teams were present to ensure it was transported safely.

The MK-84 bomb has an explosive charge of 430 kilograms, Causic said.

NATO’s bombing of Serbia began on March 24, 1999, without the approval of the UN Security Council, and lasted 78 days.

It aimed to end Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic’s bloody crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatists in Kosovo.

One of the bloodiest incidents during the campaign struck in Nis on May 7, 1999. More than a dozen people were killed when NATO planes dropped cluster bombs on a crowded central outdoor market. The incident was later described as a “blunder”.

The city was bombed again on May 12 that year with cluster bombs, leading to the deaths of 11 civilians.
