The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 marks the ninth edition of the tournament, having first been held in 1998 as the ‘ICC KnockOut Trophy’. Over the years, the tournament has been won by seven nations, ensuring countless incredible moments on the field. With the Champions Trophy set to return in Pakistan and the UAE, we take a look back at five of the most iconic moments from past editions of the tournament, according to the official website of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Virender Sehwag wins it with the ball

Star batter Virender Sehwag turned the game with his off-spin as India qualified for the final of the 2002 edition with an exciting triumph over South Africa in Colombo.

Sehwag had already contributed a splendid half-century as India posted a competitive total of 261/9 at R Premadasa Stadium, but the Proteas appeared in control during the run chase as they took the score to 200 with seven wickets still in hand and nine overs still remaining.

Enter Sehwag, who took the key wickets of Mark Boucher, Jacques Kallis and Lance Klusener to seal an enthralling victory for India and book their place in the final against Sri Lanka.

West Indies’ heroic victory

Things looked bleak for the West Indies when key batter Shivnarine Chanderpaul was dismissed and the Caribbean side still required 81 runs for victory with just two wickets in hand against England in the 2004 title decider at The Oval in London, but an incredible ninth-wicket partnership between Courtney Browne and Ian Bradshaw paved the way for a remarkable run chase.

Browne and Bradshaw put on an unbeaten 71 as the West Indies successfully chased down England’s decent total of 217 with seven deliveries remaining as the Caribbean side claimed their inaugural title.

England stun South Africa at home

England had a day out in this high-scoring encounter at Centurion in 2009 as they booked their place in the knockout stages with an eye-catching triumph over the host nation South Africa.

Owais Shah was the hero with the bat as he smashed six sixes in an innings of 98, while pace duo James Anderson and Stuart Broad picked up three wickets apiece in reply as the Proteas fell agonisingly short in reply.

Graeme Smith played a lone hand for South Africa with a brilliant 141, but that wasn’t enough as England progressed to the semi-finals with plenty of momentum.

Lasith Malinga stars in low-scoring thriller

Low-scoring contests can often lead to climatic finishes and that was certainly the case in Cardiff in 2013 as New Zealand pulled off a remarkable one-wicket triumph over Sri Lanka.

Not many would have expected Sri Lanka’s low total of 138 to be competitive, but pacer Lasith Malinga had other ideas as he ripped through the Black Caps’ middle-order to reduce New Zealand to 122/8 in reply.

It was left to Tim Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan to guide the Kiwis over the line, but not before Sri Lanka had threatened to produce a massive upset.

It was a memorable day at The Oval in London as Pakistan clinched their first Champions Trophy title with an emphatic victory over arch-rival India.

Fakhar Zaman leads Pakistan to victory over India

Opener Fakhar Zaman set the ball rolling with a superb century as Pakistan put 338/4 on the board and an inspired bowling performance from Mohammad Amir ensured that score was more than enough.

Fakhar was initially dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah, but a no-ball by India’s pace spearhead came back to haunt him as Fakhar took full advantage of his lifeline.

Amir tore through the heart of India’s top-order by dismissing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in quick succession and India could never recover as they were bundled out for just 158 in reply.

South African cricketer Heinrich Klaasen admitted that he is hesitant to try India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav’s shots and also revealed his thoughts on T20 cricket, his memorable innings and a few personal favourites. Asked to describe his batting style in one word, Klaasen replied simply, “Explosive.” When it came to naming the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) T20 player, he said on JioCinema’s Q20s show, “I would say… Suryakumar Yadav probably.”

Known for his hard-hitting approach, Klaasen shared that his favourite shot is the “pick-up pull shot” and named Jasprit Bumrah as the “toughest bowler to hit out in T20s.” When asked to pick a shot he’d like to borrow from a batter, past or present, he replied, “It would be a combination of the scoop of AB de Villiers and Suryakumar Yadav. They both have this technique to hit fine leg off straight balls, which is phenomenal.”

Reflecting on his T20 career, Klaasen recalled two standout performances against India – his 81 in 2022 or 69 in 2018. He chose the former as his favourite. “Probably the 81. That was the better one in tougher conditions,” he remarked.

Klaasen named Yuzvendra Chahal as “the funniest non-South African player” he’s played with and shared his love for butter chicken as his favourite Indian dish.

For inspiration from other sports, Klaasen named multiple Formula 1 World Drivers Championship winner Lewis Hamilton, saying, “I wish I had the ability to drive cars like him.”

Klassen also suggested that Nicholas Pooran is the one batter who could potentially score a double hundred in T20 cricket. When asked who he’d trust to bat for his life, he replied, “Probably Hashim Amla.”

Speaking about the one shot he’s always wanted to try but hesitated on, Klassen said, “The one that Suryakumar Yadav plays over fine leg – Supla Shot. I don’t like getting into line too much,” he admitted with a laugh.

A hilarious chat between Virat Kohli and Shakib Al Hasan has gone viral on social media during Day 2 of the first Test match between India and Bangladesh in Chennai on Friday. Kohli came out to bat after India lost two quick wickets in the second innings and he looked in good touch before losing his wicket to Mehidy Hasan Miraz. However, during his stay, the stump mic captured him referring to Shakib as ‘Malinga’. It was in reference to Shakib bowling a series of yorkers against him and as a result, he took a hilarious dig while namedropping the legendary Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga.

With their bowlers dismissing Bangladesh for just 149 after their lower-order helped India post 376 in the first innings, the hosts swelled their lead to 308 and extended their dominance over the visitors on day two of the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday.

On a day in which 17 wickets fell, India could add just 37 runs to their overnight total in the first hour against the second new ball as their first innings ended in 91.2 overs.

In reply, fast-bowling Jasprit Bumrah picked 4-50 in a relentless and searing bowling show to dismiss Bangladesh cheaply and help India take a 227-run lead.

As he does mostly, Bumrah was in just a different realm to be the standout bowler for India.

Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep and Ravindra Jadeja complemented him by keeping the pressure on to take two scalps each as Bangladesh crumbled in the face of baptism by fire from an exceptional Indian bowling attack.

India decided not to enforce follow-on and at stumps, reached 81/3 in 23 overs of their second innings. With Shubman Gill (33 batting) and Rishabh Pant (12 batting) at the crease, India will be aiming to bat Bangladesh out of the game after having another brilliant day at Chepauk.

Is all well in the Mumbai Indians camp? Hardik Pandya‘s appointment as the captain of the franchise, in place of Rohit Sharma, wasn’t reportedly received in the best possible manner by everyone. After Mumbai incurred two consecutive losses in their first two matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign, the situation seems to have worsened. A video has emerged on social media, making fans wonder if the relationship between Hardik and Malinga has turned sour. In the video, the MI captain could be seen pushing the legendary Sri Lankan away.

Malinga, who is a legend at Mumbai Indians, currently working as a coach, came to hug Hardik after the conclusion of the match but the skipper didn’t seem to be in the mood and pushed aside the Lankan after a brief handshake. Here’s the video:

Hardik Pandya was upbeat despite Mumbai losing their second successive match of the season, against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“Toughest soldiers get the toughest test; we are the toughest team in the competition, anyone who could have come close to where we reached as a batting group or just overall are us – let’s make sure we will help each other; worst or good, we will be together,” Hardik said.

Recapping the match, Sunrisers Hyderabad was put to bat first by Mumbai Indians. Fiery knocks came from Travis Head (62 in 24 balls, with nine fours and three sixes), and Abhishek Sharma (63 in 23 balls with three fours and seven sixes) that powered SRH to 148/2 in their 10 overs.

A brief 48-run stand between Abhishek and Aiden Markram (42* in 28 balls, with two fours and a six), Heinrich Klaasen (80* in 34 balls, with four boundaries and seven sixes) formed a 116-run stand in 54 balls to take SRH to 277/3 in their 20 overs, the highest-ever IPL total.

MI had been controlled well by SRH bowlers and restricted to a commendable 246/5 in 20 overs, losing by 31 runs.

Nothing seems to be going in Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya‘s favour as the franchise suffered their second defeat in as many games of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match on Wednesday. After a narrow defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT) in their season opener, MI were comprehensively beaten at the expense of SRH, with the hosts registering the biggest-ever team total in the history of the IPL. SRH posted 277-3 to beat MI by 31 runs in a six-hitting festival at the Uppal Stadium. While Hardik has been under the scanner for his captaincy, a video has emerged on social media, claiming that bowling coach Lasith Malinga ignored the MI captain, who went on to sit beside an agitated Kieron Pollard.

The video was shared by several users on social media platform on X.

SRH opener Travis Head (62 off 24) and number three Abhishek Sharma (63 off 23) came up with a sensational display of power-hitting that saw the latter snatching the franchise record for the fastest fifty from the Australian within minutes.

Heinrich Klaasen (80 not out off 34 balls) provided the fireworks in the end to help SRH break an 11-year-old record. The previous highest total in IPL was 263 for five achieved by Royal Challengers Bangalore back in 2013. It was also the highest total recorded in a T20 league.

Mumbai bowlers were left shell-shocked by SRH’s six-hitting spree but their batters came out with a purpose and made a match out of what looked like a one way traffic at the innings break.

Eventually, they ended at 246 for five in 20 overs.

A record 38 sixes were plundered in the game and it was the first time 500 runs were scored in a T20 match.

“The wicket was good but 277, no matter how good or bad you bowl, if the opposition get 277 that means they batted very well. It was tough out there for bowlers. Close to 500 runs were scored so the wicket was helping the batters,” Hardik said after the match.

Indian spin veteran Ravichandran Ashwin on Wednesday spoke on the bowling action of Sri Lanka and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Matheesha Pathirana and pointed out that the youngster puts his back under immense strain while bowling and “gets into awkward positions”. The 21-year-old pacer was one of the standouts for CSK in their fifth-title-winning season last year, taking 19 wickets at an average of 19.52. The pacer recently suffered a hamstring injury during the second T20I against Bangladesh this month. He has played 12 ODIs and six T20Is for Sri Lanka.

Speaking on his Youtube channel on Wednesday, Ashwin said that Pathirana has a lower angle of release, which puts his back under strain and his front leg “collapses” while releasing the ball. Comparing his action with Lankan pace legend Lasith Malinga, with whom the 21-year-old has drawn comparisons due to his slingy action, Ashwin said that Malinga has a “beautiful” side-on action which is much better for his body as his back and feet are “parallel to the crease”.

“One problem that he has but Malinga does not have is that his angle of release is much lower. That puts immense strain on his back, and his front leg literally collapses when he releases the ball; the core gets worked up too much, and it is very strenuous. Lasith Malinga goes for a beautiful side-on position. His back and feet will be parallel to the crease. But Pathirana does not get that. The action is breaking, it is rotating, and the torque is huge,” said Ashwin.

Ashwin later pointed out that though Malinga speaks highly of the young pacer, he is getting into “dangerous positions and complications.”

“I understand the complexity of facing him is different, but he is facing different problems now. This might be just his early stages, and his body needs to fill up more, but he is getting into some dangerous positions and complications. In fact, I have worked so much with Malinga, and Malinga himself told me that he’s a great prospect, but he gets into awkward positions, which is what I feel,” he added.

The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will start from March 22, with defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) set to clash with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in a South Indian derby at their home arena–MA Chidambaram Stadium. Pathirana could feature in the match depending on his fitness.

Mumbai Indians have officially appointed former Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga as their bowling coach, the Indian Premier League franchise said on Friday, promptly filling the void left by the departure of Shane Bond. The 40-year-old Malinga, who played for the five-time champions in his prime, will join the coaching team led by Mark Boucher and his former teammate Kieron Pollard ahead of the upcoming season. The franchise believed the three ex-cricketers will be “forging a strong partnership in the dugout.” The erstwhile slinger has also served as the bowling coach for MI New York in Major League Cricket and MI Cape Town in SA20.

“I am looking forward to working closely with Mark, Polly, Rohit and the rest of the team, especially the bowling unit, whose approach I loved last season, and the young MI talent that has the potential to excel, backed by the passionate MI Paltan,” Malinga said.

Malinga has won many crunch games with his bowling for both Sri Lanka in international cricket and MI at the IPL.

The former star pacer has spent close to 13 years with MI since 2008 — 11 years as a player and a year (IPL 2018) as MI bowling mentor. He was part of the MI NY staff this year.

With the extended MI group, which included MI New York and MI Cape Town, Malinga has won seven trophies, including four IPL, two CLT20, and an MLC.

Malinga, who retired in 2021, also worked with the Rajasthan Royals until this year.

As far as Bond is concerned, he has been associated with MI since 2015, winning four IPL trophies as the bowling coach of the team.

Former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond ended his nine year stint as Mumbai Indians bowling coach, the franchise said on Wednesday. Bond, who has been associated with MI since 2015, won four IPL trophies as the bowling coach of the team. The 48-year-old Kiwi also quit as MI Emirates head coach. He was at the helm of affairs of MI Emirates team in the inaugural season of ILT20 this year.

“I would like to thank the Ambani family for the opportunity to be part of MI One Family for the last nine seasons. It has been an incredible experience with so many great memories on and off the field,” Bond said in a statement issued by the franchise.

“I have been lucky enough to work with and have strong relationships with so many great people, both players and staff. I will miss them all and wish them all the best for the future. Finally thanks to the MI Paltan for their support as well.” Bond was part of MI’s IPL triumphs in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Bond made the decision to part ways with MI after the five-time IPL champions appointed Lasith Malinga as their bowling coach for IPL 2024 in August this year. Malinga, who retired in 2021 and had played for MI, worked with the Rajasthan Royals until this year.

Bond, who played 18 Tests, 82 ODIs and 20 T20Is for New Zealand, played a key role in grooming young bowlers at MI.

India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has credited Bond for shaping his skills in the early stages of his career.

The Indian cricket team defeated Sri Lanka to book their spot in the Asia Cup 2023 final but the performance from young spinner Dunith Wellalage earned him praise from both experts and fans alike. He took a brilliant five-wicket haul that included the prized wickets of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and then played a gritty knock of 42 from 46 deliveries to almost take his side to victory. Although he fell short, Wellalage received a massive compliment from legendary Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga.

Malinga took to social media to say that considering the all-round performance of Wellalage, it felt like Sri Lanka were playing with 12 players and even predicted that he can be a big star in the future.

“It’s fair to say that SL played with 12 players today. That’s how good Dunith was,” Malinga wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “He’s got a brilliant head on his young shoulders to go with his all-round skill set. I believe he’s on his way to becoming the most important player for SL in ODIs for the next decade.”

“For me, Virat Kohli is the No. 1 batsman. I am very happy to have got those two (Kohli and Rohit) big wickets. I trust my basics, and trust myself,” said Wellalage in the post-match press meet.

The 20-year-old said he was trying to bowl a wicket-to-wicket line against a set of experienced batsmen.

“The batters were set and India had got off to a fabulous start. I just tried to bowl wicket to wicket. Once we got those three wickets in three overs, we were able to put India under pressure.

“There was turn and when you put the ball in the right area, you could unsettle the batsmen. But I would have been happier with a win,” said Wellalage.

Sri Lankan pace legend Lasith Malinga on Thursday congratulated the national senior women’s team for clinching a historic series win in England. Sri Lanka women’s team created history on Wednesday by recording their first-ever series triumph over England in any format. The historic 2-1 series triumph came courtesy of a dominant seven-wicket victory over Heather Knight’s side in the third T20I in Derby. In his tweet, Malinga lauded the character shown by the team led by Chamari Athapaththu.

“Congratulations to SL Women’s Cricket team for the historic series win against England Doing so in their own backyard makes it even more special The character Chamari & her team have shown throughout the past year is promising and it’ll do wonders for the Women’s game in SL,” tweeted Malinga.

Coming to the match, put to bat first, England was bundled out for just 116 runs in 19 overs, with Maia Bouchier (23), Danielle Gibson (21) and wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones (20) helping England save face.

Seven of England’s wickets fell to spin bowlers, which included SL skipper Chamari Athapaththu, who delivered an all-round masterclass with a 28-ball 44 and a spell of 3/21. Kavisha Dilhari, Udeshika Prabodhani ended with figures of 2/16 each.

This performance raised alarm over England’s inability to play spin as they went down to Sri Lanka in the same fashion in the second T20I.

SL chased down the total without much issues as Athapaththu (44 in 28 balls, five fours and two sixes) and Harshitha Samarawickrama (26 in 28 balls, one four) guided the chase.
