Buoyed by a dominant win over Italy, Scotland captain Richie Berrington believes his team has the firepower to upset two-time champions England, who made a scratchy start to the tournament, in their T20 World Cup Group C match in Kolkata on Saturday (February 14, 2026).

Scotland on Monday (February 9, 2026) bounced back from their opening match loss to the West Indies in style, posting 207 for 4 and then bowling Italy out for 134 for a 73-run win at the Eden Gardens, a result that has lifted the mood in the camp and kept their qualification hopes alive.

On the other hand, England had a nervy outing against Nepal, where the former champions scraped home by just four runs while defending 184, needing Sam Curran to bowl a tight final over after Nepal threatened an upset.

“That dream was always there from the start of the tournament. Regardless of that game (England vs Nepal), we know, and we’ve shown in the past as a team, if we stick to our strengths and perform well, we can put anyone under pressure. Obviously we know it’s going to be tough against England. They’re a world-class team,” Berrington said in the post-match media interaction in Kolkata.

“But we know we’ve got world-class players in our line-up too. So it’s going to be on the day. Making sure, as I said, we nail our strengths. And if we get that right, we’ll give ourselves a good chance.”

The long-standing rivalry between the two nations only adds spice to the contest.

“Yeah, I think that rivalry has always been there between Scotland and England. Obviously, there is a long history there between the two nations. But I think it’s there in every sport.

“Next Saturday is going to be exciting. We look forward to every game in this tournament, and that’s our next game. So we’re certainly looking forward to it.”

With Scotland’s rugby team also facing England in Edinburgh the same day in the Six Nations, Berrington even eyed a sporting double. We’ve also got the Scotland rugby team taking on England the same day. So it would make quite a nice headline if Scotland has two wins on Saturday,” he said.

Berrington was full of praise for George Munsey’s impact at the top. Opener Munsey scored 84 off just 54 balls with the help of 13 fours and two sixes.

“George is obvious; he’s a world-class player. I think he’s shown that for a period of time now. Such an important player for us, particularly at the top of the order. You know, he always goes out there and sets the tempo of the game. As we’ve seen there today, once he gets going, he’s very hard to bowl at. So I think when you’re watching that, it certainly gives the other players in the team a lot of confidence,” he added.

England’s narrow escape against Nepal has only added to Scotland’s belief.

“I watched that game. I was glued to the TV last night. So, cheering on Nepal. But that was awesome. It’s a good confidence booster for us going forward,” he added.

Luke Ford, 35, an actor from Stirling, Scotland, has been given a 16-year sentence for a series of sexual and physical offences against women. Ford was found guilty of 19 charges that included violence, sexual assault, threats, and abusive behaviour.

Ford, who said he was a body double for Brad Pitt in the 2013 filming of World War Z in Glasgow, used this claim to gain the trust of his victims. The case marks Scotland’s first prosecution of its kind, and it highlights a disturbing campaign of abuse.

According to The Independent, one of the seven rape charges he was convicted of involved behaviour referred to as “stealthing,” which is defined as failing to use a condom without a partner’s knowledge or consent. Ford was found to have deliberately had unprotected sex despite the woman only agreeing to sex with a condom.

He was given a 21-year extended sentence with 16 years in custody at the High Court in Edinburgh on Wednesday, the Crown Office said.

The court heard Ford targeted nine female victims over a 12-year campaign of offending that lasted from 2008 to 2020.Non-harassment orders were also granted, banning Ford from contacting or attempting to contact the women.

Detective Inspector Steven Gray said in a statement: “Ford is a dangerous and manipulative sexual predator. I would like to acknowledge how hard this has been for those involved and to also tell them that their testimonies vastly contributed to Ford being convicted. I hope that knowing he is now behind bars for his crimes helps them continue to move forward with their lives.

“Anyone who has been a victim of sexual assault or abuse should contact us. Please be assured that we will do everything we can to ensure we arrest the perpetrators of such crimes.”

South Africa dominated Scotland in all departments of the game to register a commanding 80-run win in a Women’s T20 World Cup match in Dubai on Wednesday. Batting first, South Africa posted a strong 166 for five in the allotted 20 overs. In reply, the Scots failed miserably with the bat and were all out for 86 in 17.5 overs. Only two Scotland batters could reach double digits, reflecting their woes. Nonkululeko Mlaba (3/12) was the most successful bowler for South Africa while there were two wickets apiece for Chloe Tryon (2/22) and Nadine de Klerk (2/15).

With this win, their second in three matches, South Africa jumped to the top of Group B standings as Scotland occupied the last position.

Skipper Laura Wolvaardt and her opening partner Tazmin Brits gave South Africa a perfect start, stitching a partnership of 64 runs in only 7.3 overs.

Wolvaardt smashed her way to a 27-ball 40, an innings that was laced with five fours and a six, while Brits hit 43 in 35 deliveries, striking five boundaries and one maximum.

Thanks to the fireworks in the power play and overs after that, South African went past 50 in quick time and were 83 for one at the halfway stage of their innings.

Marizanne Kapp then held centre stage and blazed her way to 43 in just 24 balls with six fours.

Bangladesh ‘Emotional’ After First Win In 10 Years At Women’s T20 World Cup https://artifex.news/bangladesh-emotional-after-first-win-in-10-years-at-womens-t20-world-cup-6710625/ Thu, 03 Oct 2024 18:43:36 +0000 https://artifex.news/bangladesh-emotional-after-first-win-in-10-years-at-womens-t20-world-cup-6710625/ Read More “Bangladesh ‘Emotional’ After First Win In 10 Years At Women’s T20 World Cup” »

Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty on Thursday described her team’s first victory in a Women’s T20 World Cup match for a decade as “very emotional” and suggested it would create “momentum” for the women’s game at home. Bangladesh secured a 16-run win over Scotland in their World Cup opener in Sharjah after posting what appeared to be a flimsy 119-7 in their 20 overs. Their bowling attack, however, tied the Scots down and restricted them to 103-7.

“I would say that a win after 10 years, we all are very emotional because we have been waiting for this victory for a long time,” said Joty who was playing in her 100th T20I.

“No matter how good the cricket we play, if it doesn’t translate into victory, it means nothing. And I would say for women’s cricket, after a long time, I feel like we have done something.

“We have always said about Bangladesh that we have to create momentum and then we will move forward with that momentum. Now it seems like we are going to dream of doing something bigger. Similarly, the fans and family who support us in Bangladesh are dreaming that we can do something better than that.”

The momentum for women’s cricket in Bangladesh would have had a far bigger boost had they been staging the event as planned. Instead, weeks of widespread political unrest in Bangladesh, which eventually led to the installation of an interim government, saw the tournament switched to the United Arab Emirates, with Bangladesh remaining as nominal hosts.

“Initially it was very heartbreaking because we always bear in mind that we are going to play in front of our home crowd,” said Joty.

“But still, the people who came here today, it was brilliant.

“As a professional player and as a professional team, I think we should move on from the disappointment, not think about what could have been.

“We were able to play here and we are pretty fortunate. We all are healthy and we all are safe and representing our country and got a good win in front of a good number of people.

“Back home, they were very happy. We will get the reaction of our family and friends and fans. And definitely, they’re in a very good mood right now.”

Scotland’s Saskia Horley, who took 3-13 at the back end of the Bangladesh innings, admitted there was “a bit of disappointment” about losing their first T20 World Cup match but said there was “a hell of a lot of passion and pride” about competing at the World Cup.

“You know, our captain, Kathyrn Bryce, just said like, we’re going to be history makers here. Anything above that is a bonus.”

Bangladesh remain in Sharjah for their next Group B game against England on Saturday while Scotland, who were playing their first ever T20 World Cup match, will be up against former champions West Indies in Dubai on Sunday.

Mitchell Marsh-led Australia handed a 3-0 whitewash to Scotland in a recently-concluded T20I series. A video from the series is going viral on social media. In the surfaced clip, captain Marsh could be seen receiving a bizarre trophy at the end of the series. This is because the trophy presented to the Australia skipper was like a small cup; it was way smaller in size when compared to the usual ones. After looking at the trophy, Marsh and his teammates could not hold their laughter. Watch it here –

The cup awarded to Australian cricket team on winning the trophy looked similar to “Quaich”, a traditional Scottish drinking cup that symbolizes friendship, hospitality, and peace.

The Austrlia vs Scotland T20I series concluded on September 7 this year.

“Had a great week, had a lot of opportunities with this young team. Guys stepping up at different moments and playing good all round cricket was good to see,” said Marsh at the end of the series.

All the three matches of the series were played at Grange Cricket Club in Edinburgh.

“It has been fantastic to play at a venue like this, different challenge and this is a good opportunity to thank Scotland and Scottish cricket. We feel that cricket is very popular out here. Would be nice to have all the Scottish people on board with us when we take on England.

Australia won the first game of the series by 7 wickets before bagging the second match by a 70-run margin. The visitors won the third and final T20I by 6 wickets.

Australia delivered an astonishing batting performance against Scotland in the first T20I by scoring 113 runs for the loss of just one wicket in the powerplay.

This incredible performance set a new benchmark for the highest powerplay total in T20Is.

Nations League: Cristiano Ronaldo Strikes Late To Seal Portugal Win Over Scotland https://artifex.news/nations-league-cristiano-ronaldo-strikes-late-to-seal-portugal-win-over-scotland-6522284/ Mon, 09 Sep 2024 02:50:49 +0000 https://artifex.news/nations-league-cristiano-ronaldo-strikes-late-to-seal-portugal-win-over-scotland-6522284/ Read More “Nations League: Cristiano Ronaldo Strikes Late To Seal Portugal Win Over Scotland” »

Cristiano Ronaldo‘s late strike sealed Portugal’s 2-1 win over Scotland as the 901st goal of the striker’s extraordinary career completed a stirring fightback in Sunday’s Nations League clash. Ronaldo had reached 900 career goals with his 131st international strike in Thursday’s victory over Croatia. The 39-year-old showed no signs of being sated by that incredible milestone as he came off the bench to lift Portugal to their second successive win in Nations League Group A1. The Estadio da Luz in Lisbon rose in unison to chant the relentless Al-Nassr forward’s name after he struck with two minutes to play.

On his 30th birthday, Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes fired Portugal’s second half equaliser after his former Old Trafford team-mate Scott McTominay gave Scotland a surprise early lead.

For Portugal boss Roberto Martinez, victory over Scotland could mean some awkward silences at his next family gathering.

Martinez met his wife Beth while playing for Scottish club Motherwell in 2001 and joked before the match he would be delighted to upset his father-in-law by beating Scotland.

He did exactly that, leaving Scotland still waiting for their first win over Portugal.

Beaten 3-2 by Poland at Hampden Park on Thursday, Scotland have won just once in 14 matches, a barren sequence that included their lacklustre failure to make it out of the group stage at Euro 2024.

Steve Clarke’s men have lost six of their nine matches in 2024, with their only victory coming in a friendly against Gibraltar in June.

“When you bring quality players from the bench like Roberto can do you always know there’s a risk,” Clarke said.

“I’m really disappointed for my players because I think they deserved to get something from the game.

“But with the amount of balls that go into the box, you know one of them can go in the back of the net and that’s what happened to us.”

Ronaldo late show

Scotland took a shock lead in the seventh minute when Kenny McLean’s superb cross picked out McTominay, who made a perfectly-timed run to plant his stooping header past Diogo Costa from six yards.

McTominay, who recently moved from United to Napoli, has 10 goals in his last 12 competitive appearances for Scotland.

Rafael Leao threatened an immediate equaliser with a driving run but his shot rippled into the side-netting.

Leao went even closer as he cut in from the left flank for a fierce drive that Angus Gunn pushed away at full stretch.

Antonio Silva wasted a chance created by Leao as he headed over from the AC Milan forward’s dinked cross.

As the Portugal pressure mounted, Gunn made a fine save after Diogo Jota connected with Fernandes’s incisive pass.

It was no surprise to see Ronaldo sent on for the second half and Portugal were immediately improved by his presence.

Taking aim from long-range in the 53rd minute, Fernandes’s 25-yard blast should have been routine for Gunn but his weak attempted save allowed the ball to squirm into the net.

Ronaldo’s audacious backheel gave Joao Felix a sight of goal, only for Gunn to make amends for his earlier error with an excellent stop.

Gunn saved again from Felix’s diving header before Ronaldo turned the rebound against the post.

In the next attack, Ronaldo’s glancing header hit the post and was clawed off the line by Gunn before Felix could convert.

Portugal’s late surge finally produced the winner in the 88th minute.

Nuno Mendes whipped a cross into the six-yard box, where Ronaldo was lurking to deliver the knockout blow with a typically predatory tap-in.

Australia wicket-keeper batter Josh Inglis set records tumbling as he smashed a swashbuckling 103 off just 49 balls against Scotland in the second T20I of the series. Coming in to bat at no. 3, Inglis sent the ball to all parts of the Grange Cricket Club in Edinburgh to notch up his second T20I ton. However, he notched up two other special achievements as he reached his hundred. For one, he broke his own record, and for the other, he became the first Australian wicket-keeper batter to do so.

Inglis reached his hundred against Scotland in just 43 balls, making it the quickest-ever century by an Australian in T20I cricket. Remarkably, Inglis’ first century – against India in November 2023 – was the previous joint-fastest century by an Australian in T20Is. The previous best of a hundred in 47 balls was held by Inglis, Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch.

Inglis, however, had more to add to the record books. The 29-year-old slammed the first-ever T20I hundred by a designated Australian wicket-keeper batter. It is important to note that Inglis wasn’t the designated wicket-keeper batter when he hit his first hundred against India, as Matthew Wade was the Aussie wicket-keeper in that match.

Preparation for England series

Australia’s three-match T20I tour of Scotland is serving as preparation for the upcoming series against England, against whom they will play three T20Is and five ODIs, starting from September 11.

Scotland, who nearly qualified for the 2024 T20 World Cup Super 8 stage ahead of Australia and England, have not been able to give Australia any fight in this series at home.

After chasing down a target of 155 in less than 10 overs in the first T20I, Australia cruised to a 70-run victory in the second. Despite no significant contribution from any other batter, Inglis’ whirlwind knock alone was enough to guide Australia to a convincing total of 196.
