Anand Mahindra, the owner of the Mahindra Group, lived up to his promise and gifted a Thar to India batter Sarfaraz Khan‘s father, Naushad Khan. Mahindra had promised a Thar to Naushad after Sarfaraz made his Test debut. It was Naushad’s sacrifices that helped Sarfaraz realize his dream of representing India at the highest level. As Sarfaraz made his debut, industrialist Anand Mahindra decided to gift him a Mahindra Thar. Reacting to a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Mahindra promised to give Sarfaraz’s father a Thar, having been touched by his story.

In a viral video, Sarfaraz and his father Naushad were seen unveiling their new Thar.

Sarfaraz made his debut for India a memorable one, becoming the batter to score the fastest fifty on his maiden outing. He scored half-centuries in both the innings of his Test debut.

Sarfaraz, a domestic heavyweight for Mumbai, scored three half-centuries in three Tests against England. After India won the five-match series 4-1, Sarfaraz was rewarded with his first central contract by the BCCI.

Sarfaraz recently revealed that his father Naushad urged him to play domestic matches as if he was playing for the country even when his selection to the Indian team was getting delayed despite scoring tall runs in the national circuit.

“I would ask my father when would I get a chance to play for India and if there were people supporting us. He would tell me just one thing, ‘think as if you’re playing for India in your next domestic match and score runs there as well’.

“So I only had one job, that was to score runs whereever I’m playing,” Sarfaraz said during the India Today conclave here.

Sarfaraz also revealed that he received a lot of support from fans on social media, saying that his Instagram account has also saw a huge growth in terms of followers.

“My Instagram followers have grown to 1.5 million after my Test debut. For the last four years, it was 600-700k followers on Instagram. Suddenly, after playing for India, it has become 1.5 million. It’s good,” Sarfaraz said.

India’s newest batting star Sarfaraz Khan and wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel were inducted into Group C of BCCI’s central contract with an annual retainership fee of Rs 1 crore, having fulfilled the criteria of playing three Tests in a current season. Their names were ratified during BCCI Apex Council meeting which was held on Monday. Sarfaraz, a domestic heavyweight for Mumbai, scored three half-centuries in three Tests against England while Agra man Jurel, with scores of 90 and 39 not out in a tricky chase at Ranchi, won the Player of the Match in only his second game. Ratification of central contract was on the agenda and both have made the cut.

Ranji Trophy scheduling

The BCCI is likely to revisit the Ranji Trophy calender for the next season and will not schedule any matches in the northern part of India during the months of December and January, when fog and bad light often play spoilsport.

While the detailed domestic calender will be announced later, the BCCI Apex Council did discuss the tentative schedule of the 2024-25, which was one of the primary items in the eight-point agenda of the Apex Council meeting on the day.

For the past few seasons, the Ranji Trophy is starting in January and ending in second week of March and in north-Indian cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Kanpur, Meerut, Jammu, Dharamsala, most matches are being affected by bad light and fog during peak winter months.

“No decision has been taken yet but Ranji Trophy, like earlier years could start from mid or end October after the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which serves as an IPL auction platform. Some states are losing crucial points in do-or-die games because of inclement weather from mid-December to mid February,” a senior BCCI source told PTI.

It has been also learnt that BCCI will form a committee, which will decide whether union territory Daman & Diu get associate membership.

Foreign boards can’t talk to state bodies directly for exposure trips

A lot of ICC associate member nations like Nepal want to come for exposure trips to India and play practice games against some of the state sides. In fact the Nepal team, which will play the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies, are supposed to train in the national capital and also plan to play a few T20 matches against Gujarat, Baroda in a three-team tournament called Friendship Cup.

However BCCI’s Apex Council made it clear that any affiliated state unit will need NOC from the parent body before they can host any international team.

India broke many records in the recently-concluded five-match Test series against England at home. The Rohit Sharma-led side put up a dominating show and clinched the series with 4-1 scoreline. The win became more special as the hosts side consisted of many youngsters, who gave exemplary performances and became household names. One such player was batter Sarfaraz Khan, who made his debut in the third Test and completed the series with 200 runs in his tally. He also smashed three half-centuries and played fearless cricket against England.

Recently, Sarfaraz opened up about playing under the captaincy of Rohit. The 26-year-old batter jokingly compared Rohit’s style of captaincy to a scene from famous Bollywood movie, “Lagaan”.

“Rohit bhai ke sath khel ke bhi mujhe bahut maza aaya. Main bahut time se cricket khel raha tha, 9-10 saal maine IPL bhi khela. Aur domestic bhi khel raha hoon. Mujhe bahut maza aaya Rohit bahi ke sath khel ke. Aisa laga ki… matlab jab unko dekhta hoon toh ekdum pyaar sa aata hai ki itne ache bande hai vo. Sabko saath mein lekar chalte hai. Jab vo team mein bolte hai kuch, apne vo movie dekhi hogi Lagaan. Aamir Khan kaise team banata hai. Toh unko dekh ke mujhe Lagaan movie ka he yaad aata hai. (I enjoyed a lot while playing under the captaincy of Rohit Bhai. I have been playing for a long time now. I played in the IPL for 9-10 years and also played domestic cricket. So, it was a wonderful experience of playing under Rohit Bhai. Whenever I see him, I just admire his greatness. They takes everyone together as a team. Whenever he speaks something during the team meeting, it reminds me of Aamir Khan’s movie, Lagaan.),” Sarfaraz told AajTak.

“Daant-te itna nahi hai, bass samjhate hai. Har ek ke bolne ka tarike alag hota hai. Mujhe to nahi lagta ki daant-te hai kyuki Mumbai ki language thodi aisi he rehti hai. Tu kar ke baat karte hai pr iska matlab ye nahi ki vo daant-te hai. Ye hum Mumbai walo ki style hai. Hum waise he baat karte hai. Acha team ko saath mein lekar chalte hai. Bonding achi hai. Sikhate hai. Junior senior jaisa feel nahi aaya mujhe mere debut ke time pe. (He doesn’t scold us much. he only makes up understand and everyone has a different way of talking. I never felt that he ever scolded us. It’s just the way of talking in Mumbai. We talk like that only. His bonding with the team players is very good. He never makes us feel that he is senior to us.),” he added.

Sarfaraz was handed the Test cap by former India captain Anil Kumble before the third Test in Rajkot, where he scored two half-tons to emulate the legendary Sunil Gavaskar.

“From my childhood, I have been hearing stories about the importance of Test cricket. My father kept telling me the importance of the longest format of the game. It’s not like there was no pressure, I felt pressure when I was playing my maiden series,” Sarfaraz said.

“My Instagram followers have grown to 1.5 million after my Test debut. For the last four years, it was 600-700k followers on Instagram. Suddenly, after playing for India, it has become 1.5 million. It’s good,” he added.

An IPL contract might be on top of cricketers’ bucket list, but Mumbai’s teenaged Ranji Trophy hero Musheer Khan is happy that he went unsold during last year’s player auction because it gives him some more time to “understand” the T20 format. The 19-year-old, who became the youngest Mumbai batter to score a hundred in a Ranji final eclipsing the mark of legendary Sachin Tendulkar, was confident of making his mark in the IPL in due course.

“My name is not in the IPL. But I don’t feel disappointed. My father tells me to play Test cricket and play for Team India. IPL will eventually happen, if not today then tomorrow,” Musheer told PTI Video recalling the words of his father and formative coach Naushad.

“It’s good that I got another year to prepare for the IPL. I will understand T20 cricket more, and how I should prepare for this format,” said Musheer, who has so far played just five First-Class matches.

Musheer embossed his name on the Ranji final against Vidarbha recently with a 136 in the second innings that helped Mumbai set a massive target of 538. It eventually helped Mumbai land their record-extending 42nd title in the Ranji Trophy.

Understandably, Musheer drew inspiration from his elder brother Sarfaraz, who made his India debut in the third Test against England at Rajkot last month.

“I am really inspired by my brother because of his dedication and the way he bats. Our batting style is similar. He told me before the game (Ranji final) to think of it as a normal match and not to take too much pressure.” “From outside, it may feel like a normal match but on the field, we feel pressure on the field. He told me to back my skills and follow the process,” he added.

Musheer, who was also the leading run-scorer in the ICC Under-19 World Cup earlier this year including two hundreds, was quite chuffed after Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy triumph after a gap of eight years.

“It’s a matter of pride that we have amassed 42 titles. Many great players have played here (for Mumbai). I feel very proud that I have played for Mumbai and won a championship.

“I also want to thank the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and congratulate them because they have provided us with a lot of support. I hope they continue to back us in the same way,” he said.

The elegant right-hander lauded veteran pacer Dhawal Kulkarni, who retired after the Ranji Trophy final.

“The support he has given to Mumbai cricket, the things he has done for Mumbai, it’s incredible. The speech he gave ahead of the final was a real motivation for all of us.

“It was his last match. We were emotional and we wanted to win the trophy as a gift to Dhawal bhai. We wanted him to leave happily. He took the last wicket (of Vidarbha) of the match and everything came out perfectly,” he noted.

India captain Rohit Sharma is truly a leader that his teammates love. Every now and then, videos of Rohit’s hilarious moments with Team India players on the field go viral on social media. After the Indian team defeated England in the Dharamsala Test, winning the series 4-1, Rohit went out with some of the young players in the team. The India skipper also shared a picture of the outing on Instagram. In the picture, he could be spotted with Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. It was Rohit’s caption of the picture that broke the internet.

“Garden mein ghoomne wale bande,” Rohit captioned the post, prompting replies from former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh, as well as current star Suryakumar Yadav.

While Yuvraj reacted with a laughing emoji, Suryakumar wrote: “Gill and Jaiswal definitely”.

After the end of the series, Rohit also shed light on his future, saying he would call it quits the moment he realises that he can’t contribute to the team anymore.

“One day, when I wake up and feel, I am not good enough then I will retire straightaway. But in the last few years I am playing the best cricket of my life,” Rohit told Jio Cinema after the end of the match.

The Hitman also lauded the team for the win against England as he said, “When you win a Test like this, everything has to fall in place. At some stage people are gonna (go) and people are gonna come and we know that.

“These (young) guys are maybe short of experience, they have played a lot of cricket and I can stand here and see that these guys responded pretty well under pressure. The credit goes to the entire team and it was pleasing to see.”

The veteran batter would now look to focus on the forthcoming IPL 2024 season with the Mumbai Indians.

India blew England away inside three days in the fifth and final Test, winning by an innings and 64 runs at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Saturday. The hosts were bowled out for 477 early on Day 3, but the damage had already been done. England had a 259-run deficit in front of them and the visitors crumbled to a crushing defeat moments before the scheduled time for Tea. Ravichandran Ashwin claimed his 36th five-wicket haul as England were bowled out for 195.

India came out to field without captain Rohit Sharma on Day 3. He did not take to the field due to a stiff back, with pacer Jasprit Bumrah taking charge as skipper of the team.

Despite Rohit’s absence, there was no lack of aggression from the Indian players. One of the incidents that went viral was Jonny Bairstow‘s spat with Shubman Gill and Sarfaraz Khan.

Gill and Sarfaraz were seen sledging Bairstow. Reacting to the incident, former India opener Wasim Jaffer shared a hilarious post, which had a special mention of Virat Kohli.

Meanwhile, the BCCI President Jay Shah announced an incentive of Rs 45 lakh per game to all those who would play 75 per cent or more of the scheduled red-ball games in a particular season.

A Test player, who appears in a possible 10 Tests in a season will be richer by a whopping Rs 4.50 crore as incentive apart from a possible Rs 1.5 crore (15 lakh per game) in usual match fee.

The top cricketers also get an assured retainer fee from their annual central contracts.

“I am pleased to announce the initiation of the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ for Senior Men, a step aimed at providing financial growth and stability to our esteemed athletes,” Shah stated on ‘X’.

“Commencing from the 2022-23 season, the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ will serve as an additional reward structure on top of the existing match fee for Test matches, set at Rs 15 lakh,” he further stated.

The incentives will be retrospective and would factor in players, who were part of Test cricket during the 2022-23 season.

Rohit Sharma positions Sarfaraz Khan in field© X (Twitter)

Since making his Test debut for India, Sarfaraz Khan has been a man under the spotlight. His camaraderie with teammates, especially skipper Rohit Sharma, has been visible to all. On Day 1 of the 5th Test against England in Dharamsala, the bonhomie between Rohit and Sarfaraz was witnessed once again when the India captain decided to lift the young lad and put him in a certain place on the field. Fair to say that the bond between the duo has only strengthened since Sarfaraz made his Test debut.

Placed at the short-leg position, Sarfaraz seemed to be finding it tough to stand at the exact position instructed to him. Rohit then decided to take the matter in his own hands. He pulled Sarfaraz back a couple of steps, and positioned him where he desired. Here’s the hilarious video:

As for the match, India openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal‘s onslaught allowed India to exercise control on Day one of the final Test against England.

At the end of the day’s play, India were 135/1, trailing by 83 runs with Rohit and Shubman Gill unbeaten with scores of 52* and 26* respectively. England were bowled out for 218 in their first innings.

Ravichandran Ashwin cleared off England’s tail end after Kuldeep Yadav struck vital blows taking five wickets for 72 runs in the picturesque stadium.

Rohit struck boundaries and put pressure on England bowlers in the company of Yashashvi Jaiswal. The two struck a 104-run partnership for the first wicket. Jaiswal raced to his half-century in 55 balls with a delightful boundary in the 21st over.

The end of the 104-run opening partnership brought Shubman Gill to the crease. The 24-year-old stitched a 31-run unbeaten stand to ensure India didn’t lose any further wickets.

The second day of the fifth India vs England Test in Dharamsala brought some really good performances from the hosts. As many as five batters scored 50-plus scores, with India taking a huge 255-run lead going into the third day of the contest. India are already leading 3-1 in  the series, and chances are high for the Rohit Sharma-led side to make that 4-1. Indian cricket team management handed debuts to many tallented stars in the series. Sarfaraz Khan is one of them.

In his fifth innings, Sarfaraz scored his third half-century on Friday. While Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill scored tons, Sarfaraz’s innings stood out due to its aggressive nature. He scored 56 off 60 balls. His innings included eight fours and one six.

Suryakumar Yadav, who also plays for Mumbai like Sarfaraz, had a classic comment on his show. On his Instagram story, he wrote: “Sher Bhuka Hai”

Talking about the game, England mounted a comeback in the final session of the second day with a clinical bowling performance but India’s resilient tail end kept the hosts in front in the final Test at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium on Friday. At the end of the day’s play, India posted a total of 473/8 on the board, leading by 255 runs with Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah unbeaten with scores of 27(55) and 19(55) respectively.

Shoaib Bashir lifted England’s spirits by removing set batter Sarfaraz Khan (56) with his off-spin on the first ball of the final session.

Devdutt Padikkal on the other end went on to raise his bat after completing his maiden Test fifty with a maximum and received thunderous applause from the dressing room as well as the crowd.

India crossed the 400-run mark in the 91st over and looked unfazed in the following overs. The Somerset spinner managed to find a breakthrough by getting better of Padkikkal (65) with extra bounce and sharp spinning delivery.

Dhruv Jurel came in looking to stitch up a partnership alongside Ravindra Jadeja. The pair managed to survive for the next seven overs before India lost a flurry of wickets.

Bashir struck once again and removed Jurel (15). The young batter’s dismissal opened the gates for a comeback as India ended up losing Jadeja (15) and Ravichandran Ashwin (0) in a span of two overs.

Kuldeep and Bumrah put up an unbeaten 45-run stand to once again push England’s back against the wall.
