Sania Mirza and Mohammed Shami are two of the most successful sportspersons that the country has seen over the last few decades. Sania is the greatest women’s tennis player from India while Shami is a champion pace bowler, with his solid show at the ODI World Cup 2023 catapulting the Indian cricket team into the final. Recently, a rumour started floating that Sania Mirza and Mohammed Shami were going to get married.

While Sania and Pakistan cricket star Shoaib Malik got divorced earlier this year, Shami is also separated from his wife Hasin Jahan.

Indian tennis icon Sania Mirza recently embarked on a sacred journey to Hajj, about 5 months after she announced he split with cricketer husband Shoaib Malik. Sania, who has also retired from professional tennis, was most-recently working as a pundit for the prestigious French Open 2024. Taking to social media, the Indian sporting icon had revealed that she is now gearing up for a ‘transformative experience’, from which she hopes to return as a better human being.

In a post on social media on Sunday, Sania wrote: “As I prepare for this transformative experience, I humbly ask for your forgiveness for any wrongdoings and shortcomings.”

Sania further said that she hopes Allah accepts her prayers and guides her on this blessed path.

She added: “I am deeply fortunate and feel immensely grateful. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I embark on this journey of a lifetime. I hope to come back as a better human being with a humble heart and stronger Imaan.”

Sania was also recently spotted on a famous comedy show where she spoke to comedian Kapil Sharma about her decorated career, especially her partnership with Martina Hingis in 2015-16.

During the conversation, Sania shared: “I think all of the women sitting on this couch can understand this…when you hit a streak (winning back-to-back), athletes like to call it being ‘In the zone’… Honestly, I think that’s the best way I can describe what Martina and I had for those six months.”

It was a tough night for Karachi Kings at the Pakistan Super League against Peshawar Zalmi on Monday. Despite chasing a low target of 148, Karachi Kings fell short by two runs. Babar Azam scored a half-century to guide Peshawar over 145. In reply, Karachi Kings’s chase withered away despite a 30-ball 41 up the order by Tim Seifert. Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik scored 22 off 25 balls and was bowled by Afghanistan star Naveen-ul-Haq. Malik’s wife Sana Javed was present at the stadium and was stunned after Malik was clean bowled.

In January, Sania Mirza’s family confirmed that the Indian tennis icon and Shoaib Malik have separated, a day after Pakistani cricketer announced his third marriage with actor Sana Javed. Their split marked the end of a high-profile union that had generated huge interest among sports lovers from the two countries. The 41-year-old Malik then posted his wedding picture with Sana on social media platforms.

“Sania has always kept her personal life away from the public eye. However, today the need has arisen for her to share that Shoaib and she have been divorced for a few months now. She wishes Shoaib well for his new journey ahead!,” read the statement issued by Mirza’s family.

“At this sensitive period of her life, we would like to request all fans and well-wishers to refrain from indulging in any speculation and to respect her need for privacy,” the statement added.

The revelation came amid long-standing rumours and speculation surrounding the strained relationship between Malik and Mirza, who got married in April 2010 in the Indian player’s hometown of Hyderabad.

The rumours gained momentum when Malik recently unfollowed Mirza, 37, on Instagram, a move that further fuelled speculation about their marital discord.

They have a five-year-old son Izaan, who is currently living with Mirza.

Mirza, in an Instagram post, had alluded to personal struggles.

“Marriage is hard, Divorce is hard. Choose your hard. Obesity is hard. Being fit is hard, Choose your hard. being in debt is hard. Being financially disciplined is hard. Choose your hard,” she posted in an instagram story.

“Communication is hard. No communicating is hard. Life will never be easy. I will always be hard. But we can choose our hard. Pick wisely.”

Celebrated as one of India’s greatest tennis players, Sania announced her retirement from professional tennis last year after a illustrious career spanning two decades.

She won six Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles events.

“Long Overdue”: Sania Mirza Calls For Introspection On Value Of Women’s Success https://artifex.news/long-overdue-sania-mirza-calls-for-introspection-on-value-of-womens-success-5156369/ Sat, 02 Mar 2024 03:39:05 +0000 https://artifex.news/long-overdue-sania-mirza-calls-for-introspection-on-value-of-womens-success-5156369/ Read More ““Long Overdue”: Sania Mirza Calls For Introspection On Value Of Women’s Success” »

Former India tennis ace Sania Mirza has called for introspection on how women’s success is perceived in the society. The ex-India player, who got divorced from former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik a few months back, reflected on the gender discrimination she feels is still prevalent in the society. Sania opened up while reacting to an advertisement that showed how a society devalues a woman’s success. The ad also portrayed the feelings of an independent woman during the struggle she has to go through due to the social stigma.

“In 2005, I was the first Indian woman to win a WTA title. Big deal, right? When I was world no. 1 in doubles, people were keen to know when I’d settle down. Winning six grand slams isn’t settled enough for society,” said Mirza on X while reacting to the advertisement.

“I’m grateful for the support I’ve received along the way, but can’t help and think why a woman’s achievements invite conversation about gender ‘expectations’ and appearances, instead of her skill and the work itself,” she added.

While admitting that a “real conversation” about society is “difficult”, Sania said that an introspection on the issue is required.

Sania’s personal life became a trending topic on social media in January this year after Shoaib shared his wedding pictures with Sana Javed on social media. There were rumours about the separation of Sania from Shoaib, and the former Pakistan player’s new wedding post confirmed it.

Later, Sania’s family broke the silence on the matter.

In the statement, Sania’s team and her family wrote: “Sania has always kept her personal life away from the public eye. However, today the need has arisen for her to share that Shoaib and she have been divorced for a few months now. She wishes Shoaib well for his new journey ahead!

At this sensitive period of her life, we would like to request all fans and well-wishers to refrain from indulging in any speculation and to respect her need for privacy.”

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) began on February 17. Several high-profile international cricketers have pulled out of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) due to the overlapping of dates with other franchise-based tournaments and many cricket boards denying permission to their players to compete in domestic T20 competitions. All the six franchises have been hit hard with several players opting for the Bangladesh Premier League, ILT20 and SA20 leagues.

PSL side Multan Sultans have lost several players they had initially signed up for the upcoming season, with England pace bowler Reece Topley being the latest to pull out due to an injury.

In the absence of international stars, a lot of the attention in on the Pakistan stars. Former Pakistan cricket team captain Shoaib Malik is playing for Karachi Kings in the PSL and recently in a match against Multan Sultans, he top-scored for his team with a 35-ball 53. Despite his half-century, Karachi Kings lost the match by 55 runs. In attendance in the match was Shoaib Malik’s wife Sana Javed. The two recently got married. Their marriage news was widely shared on social media as Shoaib Malik had split with Indian tennis Icon Sania Mirza.

Talking about the tournament, a PSL franchise owner has asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to revisit the tournament window, as it is not possible to get big players when three leagues are happening on after the other.

“The SA20 ended recently and the ILT20 concludes on the day the PSL begins, so it is getting difficult to sign big players now,” he said on condition of anonymity.

He also pointed out that January-February is a busy season for international cricket series. Sri Lanka are playing a series against Afghanistan, South Africa are in the middle of a two-Test series against New Zealand while West Indies are playing a series against Australia.

“There is an acute need to change the PSL window, else it will lose its charm if we don’t get big overseas names,” he added.
