Two people were killed and four others sustained burn injuries after a massive fire broke out at a scrap material godown and spread to around 60 to 70 commercial units and chawls in Sakinaka, Andheri East, on Tuesday evening (October 20, 2026), civic officials said.

The blaze, classified as a Level II fire, was extinguished shortly after midnight. It was put out after more than six hours of firefighting operations.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the fire was reported at 6:18 p.m. on Tuesday (October 20, 2026) at Abdu Rashid Compound on Khairani Road. The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) declared it a Level-II fire at 6:37 p.m., prompting the deployment of additional firefighting resources. The blaze was eventually extinguished at 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday (October 21, 2026).

The initial reports said the fire started in a scrap material godown. Later, fire brigade updates indicated it spread across 60–70 commercial units and chawls in single-storey and partly G+1 structures.

Officials said that two unidentified charred bodies were recovered from the site and taken to Rajawadi Hospital for post-mortem examination and their identities are not yet known.

Four other people who sustained burn injuries were shifted to Rajawadi Hospital in a police van, officials said. The injured were identified as Tofik Shadilal Qureshi (20), Jahid Abidullah Qureshi (20), Kamal Jalaluddin Shah (42), and Lalchand Ramlakhan Gautam (40). All four injured were admitted to the trauma ward for further treatment, says the assistant medical officer at Rajawadi Hospital.

Fire brigade officials said the blaze damaged electrical wiring and installations, garments, plastic granules, scrap, wood furniture, empty aerosol containers and LPG cylinders. It also affected machines, metal shutters, doors, windows, roofing sheets and steel frames. Two-wheeled vehicles, a tempo, and other vehicles were damaged.

Personnel from the Mumbai Police, the electricity distribution company, ambulance services and BMC ward staff were also mobilised to assist with firefighting and rescue operations.

The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.
