Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (April 9, 2026) declared a 32-hour ceasefire in Ukraine over the Orthodox Easter weekend, following an earlier call from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a pause in some of the hostilities to observe the holiday.

Mr. Putin’s decree, released by the Kremlin, orders Russian forces to observe a ceasefire starting 4 p.m. (local time) Saturday (April 11, 2026) and lasting until the end of Sunday (April 11, 2026).

Mr. Zelenskyy proposed earlier in the week that each side stop targeting each other’s energy infrastructure over the holiday, saying he made the offer through the United States, which has been mediating talks between delegations from Moscow and Kyiv as Russia’s invasion stretches into a fifth year.

An early morning Russian attack killed three people on Friday (September 12, 2025) in northern Ukraine’s Sumy region, a regional official reported, but President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Moscow’s attempts to advance in the area had failed with heavy losses.

Russian forces are engaged in a long, grinding drive along the 1,000 km (620-mile) front through eastern Ukraine, but have also tried in recent months to gain a foothold in areas like Sumy, a border region next to Russia’s Kursk region.

They have captured a string of villages near the border and subject larger towns, like the city of Sumy, to frequent shelling.

Sumy Regional Governor Oleh Hryhory said a 6 a.m. (0300 GMT) drone and missile attack killed three residents in or near Sumy and injured five.

But Mr. Zelenskyy, quoting Ukraine’s top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said the Russian operation in the region “has been completely foiled by our forces.”

“Fighting continues in the border areas of Sumy region, but the Russian grouping in the Sumy direction has lost its offensive capabilities as a result of the losses it has suffered,” he wrote on Telegram.

Mr. Zelenskyy has reported successes in other operations in Sumy in recent weeks. He said Kyiv’s forces were also actively repelling Russian troops in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia, the two main areas on the front line.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had captured a new village, Ternove, in Dnipropetrovsk region in the centre of Ukraine.

It was the second day in a row that Russia reported seizing a village in that region, adding to a list of several such localities in recent weeks. Ukraine has emphasised in public statements its efforts to keep Russians from gaining any ground there.

Ukraine’s popular war blog DeepState, which uses open-source reports to track military positions, reported Russian gains near Ternove and at least one other village in the area.

But another military blogger reported that Ukrainian forces had taken back one village in the region from Russian troops.

Russia’s Defence Ministry on Tuesday (September 10, 2024) said it had captured the town of Krasnogorivka in eastern Ukraine as well as three villages in different parts of the Donetsk region.

The Ministry said Russian troops had “liberated” the town and the villages of Grygorivka, Galytsynivka and Vodiane.

The Ministry statement used the Russian names for all four settlements.

Krasnogorivka, which had a population before the conflict of 16,000, is in an area where the front line has remained relatively unchanged for weeks.

The town lies some 20 km west of Russian-held Donetsk and had served as a key stronghold for Kyiv.

It became more vulnerable after the fall of nearby Marinka in December 2023 and Avdiivka in February 2024.

Russian troops have been advancing steadily in the Donetsk region in recent weeks and are closing in on the town of Pokrovsk, a vital logistics and transport hub for Ukrainian forces.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week that seizing the Donbas, Ukraine’s industrial heartland which includes the Donetsk region, was Russia’s “primary objective”.

On the back foot in the east, Ukraine last month launched an offensive into Russia’s Kursk region, saying it had seized hundreds of square kilometres.

Ukraine has said one of its objectives had been to halt Russian advances in the east by forcing Moscow to redeploy troops.
