A senior Russian Air Force Commander was killed when a military transport aircraft crashed in Russian-controlled ‌Crimea last week killing 30 people, according to a senior official cited by Russian media on Monday (April 6, 2026).

Alexander Otroshchenko, Commander of the 45th Army of ‌the Northern Fleet’s Air Force and Air Defence, died in the ‌crash, Andrei Chibis, Governor of ‌the northern Murmansk region where the fleet is based, was quoted as saying.

The An-26 military transport plane crashed into a cliff in Crimea on March ‌31. Russia’s Defence Ministry said shortly afterwards that the preliminary cause was technical malfunction.

The An-26 has been in ‌service since the late 1960s and has also been used by airlines to carry freight, but the model has been involved in a number of deadly crashes over ‌the last decade.

A Ukrainian An-26 crashed during a flight in Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporizhzhia region in 2022, killing one person. Another aircraft crashed on a training flight in northeastern Ukraine in 2020, ‌killing all but one of the 27 people on board.

Eight people, including five Russians, were killed when an An-26 crashed in South Sudan in 2020. Four of 10 people on board were killed when an ‌An-26 crashed on landing in Ivory Coast in West Africa in 2017.

The Russian Defence Ministry said Sunday (March 22, 2026) its forces had taken control of Potapivka, a tiny village near the Russian border in Ukraine’s northern Sumy region.

The Russian army has been trying to establish a “buffer zone” in the Sumy region for months, making small, localised breakthroughs across the border.

Ukraine says it is holding back Russia’s advances and that Moscow has struggled to establish a meaningful foothold in the region.

“As a result of determined actions, units of the Northern grouping of soldiers established control over the village of Potapovka in the Sumy region,” the Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement, using the Russian name for the village.

Ukraine did not immediately respond to Russia’s claims.

Russia occupies around a fifth of Ukraine, most of which it seized following the launch of its 2022 full-scale offensive. Its advances in February were the slowest in nearly two years, according to an AFP analysis of data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Two Russian warships have arrived in the southern Chinese port city of Zhanjiang to take part in joint naval exercises, the Russian Defence Ministry said on July 13.

China and Russia have greatly reinforced ties since the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine that began in February 2022. Their common goal is also to reduce the role of the United States and the West on the international stage.

“A detachment of vessels from the Pacific fleet will take part in the joint naval exercise — Interaction Maritime 2024,” the Ministry announced on Telegram, posting a video of their arrival.

The first phase will take place from Monday-Wednesday and involve anti-air and anti-submarine attacks along with Chinese planes specialised in anti-submarine manoeuvres, it said.

The two countries hold joint military exercises regularly, but their level of interoperability is greatly inferior to that of the Western military alliance NATO, the European Union Institute for Security Studies said in a report in early July.

Last year, a similar naval exercise took place off Alaska.

Russia on Sunday claimed its troops had captured a village in southern Ukraine, continuing its progress on the front line against a Ukrainian army lacking troops and ammunition.

“Units of the Eastern forces have liberated the settlement of Zagrine in the Zaporizhzhia region and occupied more favourable positions,” the Russian defence ministry said in its daily report.

The Russian army has been gaining ground for months in Ukraine, particularly in the east, without however achieving a real breakthrough.

Earlier this week, it announced the capture of three villages in the east, southeast and northeast of Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said this week that his troops had conquered nearly 880 square kilometres (340 square miles) of land since the start of the year.

Russia also launched an offensive in the Kharkiv region on May 10, seizing several localities before their advance was slowed by reinforcements sent in by Kyiv.

Ukrainian troops have been facing shortages of soldiers and ammunition for months, despite Western pledges of arms deliveries.

Russia’s Defence Ministry on May 30 said it neutralised 13 Ukrainian aerial drones in the southern Krasnodar region and close to the annexed Crimean peninsula.

On May 30 morning, “five Ukrainian aerial drones were shot down by anti-aircraft defence systems in the Krasnodar region,” the Ministry said in a statement.

Another eight drones were intercepted during the night “over the Black Sea, close to the Crimean coast”, the statement added.

The Russian Army also said it had destroyed two Ukrainian naval drones in the Black Sea that were “heading for Crimea”.

Eight tactical ATACMS missiles were shot down by Russian air defence systems over the Sea of Azov, near Crimea.

Faced with more than two years of Russian bombardments, Ukraine has taken the fight to Russian soil, often targeting energy infrastructure across the border.
