Russian drones killed one person and wounded two dozen others in cities across Ukraine, local authorities announced on Monday (June 1, 2026), as Kyiv and Moscow step up long-range strikes with peace talks stalling.

One person was killed in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson and eight people were wounded in the northern town of Chernigiv, where power was cut to 10,000 people, authorities said.

Emergency services published images from Chernigiv showing teams of firefighters dousing a large blaze in the middle of the night following the attacks.

The Ukrainian air force said Russian forces had launched 265 combat drones in the barrage, and that its air defence units had downed 228 of the unmanned aerial vehicles.

Seven people were wounded in Russian strikes in the Black Sea port city of Odesa, four more in the central city of Kharkiv, one in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia and at least two more were hurt in Kherson.

Moscow launches attacks almost nightly on Ukraine, which has stepped up its retaliatory strikes in recent months, mainly targeting Russian energy infrastructure.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine launched in February 2022 has become the bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War II, killing hundreds of thousands of people and displacing millions.

Explosions echoed over Kyiv on Tuesday (April 28, 2026) during a rare daytime Russian drone attack on the capital, after the two sides launched strikes that left six dead.

A major oil refinery in southern Russia was also set ablaze, triggering a local state of emergency as thick black smoke billowed over the coastal town of Tuapse.

The Kremlin said ‍on Friday (January 30, 2026) that Russian President ​Vladimir Putin had ‌received a ​personal request from his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump to halt strikes on Kyiv until February 1 in order ​to create a ⁠favourable environment for peace negotiations.

Asked about the request and ​Russia’s response, ⁠Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined further comment.

Ukraine has said it will ‌reciprocate if Russia ‌forgoes strikes on the country’s energy ‍infrastructure amid a period of bitterly cold weather.

The ‍next round of trilateral peace talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States were set to take place in ⁠Abu Dhabi on Sunday (February 1, 2026), but Ukrainian President ​Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday (January 30, 2026) ⁠the date or location could change.

Russian forces in Ukraine killed 12 people and struck energy infrastructure and a passenger train overnight on Tuesday (January 27, 2026), authorities said, days after negotiators from both sides held direct talks aimed at ending nearly four years of war.

In northeastern Kharkiv region, a drone hit a carriage of a train transporting nearly 200 passengers, killing at least five people, Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko posted on X.

“There is not and cannot be any military justification for killing civilians in a train carriage,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Telegram.

Prosecutors posted images of the smouldering carriage on social media, which regional emergency services later said had been extinguished.

A barrage of more than 50 Russian drones killed three people and wounded more than 30 in the southern city of Odesa, regional officials said.

The Black Sea city key for Ukrainian exports has been routinely pummelled by Russian forces.

Regional governor Oleg Kiper said a woman, 39 weeks pregnant, and two girls were among the wounded.

An AFP journalist at the scene saw the collapsed facade of a residential building and rescue workers searching the rubble for victims.

Mr. Zelenskyy said the bombardment undermined peace efforts and urged allies to step up pressure on Moscow to end the war.

“Every such Russian strike erodes the diplomacy that is still ongoing and undermines the efforts of partners who are helping to end this war,” he wrote on social media.

Deadly strikes on energy infrastructure that have left many Ukrainians without power in freezing temperatures have continued since Russian and Ukrainian negotiators met in the United Arab Emirates last week for U.S.-brokered talks aimed at ending the conflict.

The next round is expected to take place on February 1, according to Mr. Zelenskyy.

Millions without power

Ukrainian private energy firm DTEK said Russian forces had inflicted “enormous” damage on one of its facilities in the Odesa region overnight.

Mr. Kiper said dozens of residential buildings, a church, kindergarten and schools had been damaged in the attacks.

A married couple aged 45 and 48 were killed in Sloviansk in the eastern Donetsk region, which the Kremlin claims to have annexed. Their 20-year-old son survived the attack, local prosecutors said.

In the southern region of Zaporizhzhia, a 58-year-old man was killed in a drone attack. A 72-year-old was killed in her home by Russian shelling in the southern Kherson region.

Russian drone and missile attacks have knocked out power, lighting and heat to millions of Ukrainians across the country.

The Ukrainian air force said Russia had launched 165 attack drones overnight, and officials said an infrastructure facility in the western Lviv region was hit.

State gas company Naftogaz said the attack had left one of its facilities on fire in western Ukraine, describing it as the fifth attack of its kind this month.

Russian forces are slowly advancing across the front. The Russian Defence Ministry announced on Tuesday (January 27) it had captured two more villages in the Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions.

Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine overnight into Saturday (October 25, 2025) killed at least four people and wounded 16 others, local officials said.

In the capital, Kyiv, two people were killed and nine were wounded in a ballistic missile attack in the early hours of Saturday, Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s city military administration, said.

A fire broke out in a non-residential building in one location, while debris from intercepted missiles fell in an open area at another site, damaging windows in nearby buildings, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service wrote on the message app Telegram.

“Explosions in the capital. The city is under ballistic attack,” Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram during the onslaught.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, two people were killed and seven wounded, acting regional Gov Vladyslav Haivanenko said, adding that apartment buildings, private homes, an outbuilding, a shop and at least one vehicle were damaged in the strikes.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched nine missiles and 62 drones, of which air defences intercepted four missiles and 50 drones.

In Russia, the country’s Defence Ministry said its air defences shot down 121 Ukrainian drones over Russia overnight.

The attacks came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the United States on Friday to expand sanctions on Russian oil from two companies to the whole sector, and appealed for long-range missiles to hit back at Russia.

Mr. Zelenskyy was in London for talks with two dozen European leaders who have pledged military help to shield his country from future Russian aggression if a ceasefire stops the more than three-year war.

The meeting hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer aimed to step up pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding momentum to recent measures that have included a new round of sanctions from the United States and European countries on Russia’s vital oil and gas export earnings.

The talks also addressed ways of helping protect Ukraine’s power grid from Russia’s almost daily drone and missile attacks as winter approaches, enhancing Ukrainian air defences, and supplying Kyiv with longer-range missiles that can strike deep inside Russia.

Mr. Zelenskyy has urged the U.S. to send Tomahawk missiles, an idea U.S. President Donald Trump has considered.
