Russia bombarded cities across Ukraine with missiles and drones in an overnight onslaught that ran into the daylight hours of Thursday (August 27, 2026), when explosions echoed around Kyiv through the morning.

Ukraine is desperately short of U.S.-made Patriot air defense missiles that can counter Russia’s ballistic missiles, and Moscow’s fast-flying jet-powered drones have brought another challenge since the Russian military’s full-scale invasion began four and a half years ago.

Ukrainian officials say Russia builds up missile stocks and launches major attacks every few days, hoping to exhaust Ukrainian defences through the sheer weight of numbers. In response, Ukraine has hit high-profile targets on Russian soil as the countries inflict mutual destruction.

The Russian Defence Ministry said its forces carried out a “massive” strike on targets in nine Ukrainian cities that began after nightfall on Wednesday (August 26, 2026). It described the targets as military-related, including industrial facilities, oil refineries, logistics hubs and port infrastructure.

Civilian areas, including apartment buildings, suffered damage. The barrage killed a 78-year-old woman in the southern Zaporizhzhia region and another person in the northern Kharkiv region, with at least 14 people reported wounded elsewhere, Ukrainian officials said.

“Russia continues to invest in missiles and in expanding its war, and that means more countermeasures are needed,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media, noting promises earlier this week by European countries to provide more air defence assistance.

“It is important that these (measures) are also supplemented by additional ballistic missile defense packages” through European purchases of weapons from the United States, he said.

Though the Russian Defence Ministry insisted only war-related targets were attacked, Russia appears determined to hurt Ukrainian businesses and dent the country’s economy through attacks on private enterprise after Ukraine’s long-range drone strikes caused financial difficulties for Moscow.

Russian drones hit three major distribution centers, destroying depots belonging to a toy store chain and a confectionery company, and damaging another run by an electronics retailer, the companies said.

In addition, Moscow continued its efforts to wreck the Ukrainian power grid before the freezing winter months.

Four powerful glide bombs destroyed generating equipment at the southern Kherson region’s combined heat and power plant, forcing it to shut down, its operator Naftogaz said.

Mr. Zelenskyy was due to visit neighbouring Moldova on Thursday (August 27, 2026) to mark its national day commemorating its 1991 declaration of independence from the Soviet Union. Ukraine announced its independence the same year.

Russia’s neighbours in Eastern Europe are concerned its invasion of Ukraine could trigger a wider conflict, and drones flying into its airspace have fueled jitters.

Moldova’s Ministry of Defence said on Thursday (August 27, 2026) that five drones breached its airspace overnight, but it didn’t specify who fired them.

Ukraine’s air force said defences shot down or suppressed seven Russian ballistic missiles, though it didn’t say how they achieved that.

Four districts of Kyiv were hit during the night, damaging residential buildings, a school and a medical facility, though no casualties were reported, city police said.

Russian forces struck industrial facilities as well as energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s central Poltava region, said Vitalii Diakivnych, head of the Poltava regional military administration.

The southern Odesa region also came under a major Russian attack lasting more than seven hours, according to Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa regional military administration.

The barrage damaged a 16-story residential building and two educational facilities as well as a grain elevator, he said. Odesa is a key port for Ukraine’s vital exports of grain and other agricultural products.

Some trains were delayed by more than 17 hours following the attack, according to Ukrainian state rail company Ukrzaliznysia.

Ukraine has also fired hundreds of long-range drones almost nightly at targets in Russia.

Ukraine’s General Staff said that plane-launched missiles hit Russia’s main and backup command posts near the eastern city of Donetsk, where Ukrainian defenders are under pressure from a Russian push.

The Russian Defence Ministry said on Thursday (August 27, 2026) that its air defences shot down 267 Ukrainian drones over 14 Russian regions, the illegally annexed Crimean Peninsula, the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.

After razing huge warehouses in recent months belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s biggest online retailer, Ukrainian drones are now taking aim at Ozon, the country’s second-largest e-commerce company.

Ozon initially said that its logistics facilities in the cities of Orenburg and Ufa were attacked, but neither of the premises caught fire. A later alteration to the company statement said that only the Ufa site was attacked, while the Orenburg facility was evacuated because of an alert, but resumed normal operations.

A series of blasts were heard in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, shortly after midnight local time on Tuesday (August 11, 2026), AFP journalists said, after the authorities warned of several approaching missiles.

The reporters said they heard several loud explosions while the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, wrote on social media that Kyiv was “under ballistic missile attack”.

Mr. Klitschko said emergency services had been sent to the Shevchenkivsky district. City authorities said at least one person had been wounded.

Air raid sirens had begun to sound shortly before the blasts were heard.

In the southeast, the head of the Zaporizhzhia regional military administration, Ivan Fedorov, said that at least nine people were wounded in a Russian missile strike.

“The Russians attacked industrial facilities and infrastructure,” he said on Telegram. “A garage cooperative and residential buildings were damaged.”

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had earlier said that Russia was preparing to deploy more North Korean troops in the war and had received new ballistic missiles from Pyongyang.

Moscow has stepped up its ballistic missile strikes in recent weeks, which only certain air defence systems, including U.S. Patriots, are capable of intercepting.

The shortage of PAC-3 interceptor missiles has worsened since the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran in February.

At the same time, Ukraine has been increasing its strikes against Russian cities far from the border.

Russian missiles struck the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and the surrounding region early on Sunday (July 19, 2026), ‌killing at least one person and wounding 13 others as fires broke out across the city, officials said.

A series of powerful explosions thundered in the ‌night, as Ukraine’s air force warned of a ballistic missile threat.

Fires ‌broke out at a dormitory, ‌an apartment building and a supermarket, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram.

Several non-residential buildings and warehouses were struck in the attack, while parked cars ‌and office buildings were on fire in several districts, Mr. Klitschko said.

At one location, workers picked through smouldering debris and ‌doused bombed-out apartments.

A resident who identified himself as Vlad said he had been inside his apartment when a blast tore off his balcony door, which smashed him in the head.

“My ‌grandmother lives with me, and she can’t walk. How could I run away and leave her behind?” he said.

The State Emergency Service dispatched emergency workers to several locations across three city ‌districts.

Two people were wounded in the Kyiv region, according to the military administration, and warehouses there were also damaged.

Russian forces have stepped up ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv and other cities in recent weeks, as Ukraine ‌runs low on critical U.S.-designed air defences to shoot them down.

Russia said Monday (May 25, 2026) it plans to launch more strikes on Kyiv, including on its “decision-making centres”, and repeated a call for foreign citizens and diplomats to leave the city.

Russia launched scores of drones and missiles at Ukraine over the weekend, killing four people, wounding dozens and causing damage across the Ukrainian capital.

Among the weapons Russia used was its Oreshnik hypersonic missile, which can travel 10 times the speed of sound and is capable of carrying nuclear warheads, according to Moscow.

The barrage came days after Russia accused Kyiv of striking a vocational school in the Russian-occupied Lugansk region, killing 21 people. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his military to retaliate for that attack.

“Under the current circumstances, the Russian Armed Forces are starting to launch systematic strikes against Ukrainian military-industrial facilities in Kyiv,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“The strikes will target both decision-making centres and command posts… We are warning foreign citizens, including personnel of diplomatic missions and international organisations, to leave the city as soon as possible,” it added.

Ukraine described Russia’s threats as “rhetoric”.

“We are now telling our partners that they should not give in to all this Russian blackmail,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said.

Russia had already called on foreign citizens and diplomats to evacuate Kyiv earlier this month, when it threatened massive strikes on central Kyiv if Ukraine disrupted a military parade on Red Square.

Russia launched its full-scale offensive on Ukraine in February 2022. The conflict has since spiralled into Europe’s deadliest since World War II.
