The U.S. on Friday (October 9, 2026) lifted sanctions on the sale of Russian diesel till April 7 next year.

The announcement by the US Department of Treasury came minutes after U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and struck a deal to supply diesel to the American and global markets.

“…all transactions prohibited by the Russian Harmful Foreign Activities Sanctions Regulations … that are related to the sale, delivery, offloading, or importation, including importation into the United States, of diesel fuel of Russian Federation origin are authorised through 12:01 am eastern daylight time, April 7, 2027,” the Treasury Department said.

Earlier, Mr. Trump said Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel, followed by 500,000 tons in November, and one million tons immediately thereafter.

Russia will then deliver another 3 million tons of diesel based on the condition of Russia’s refineries, Mr. Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Diesel prices have surged around the world as Ukraine attacked Russian refineries, forcing Moscow to ban diesel exports.

The attacks by Houthi militia on refineries in Saudi Arabia had further tightened fuel supplies.

Mr. Trump is facing political pressure to take action to reduce fuel prices ahead of the November midterm elections.

Russia will immediately supply diesel to the U.S., President Donald Trump announced on Friday (October 9, 2026) after talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

The surprise announcement comes against the backdrop of a U.S. law seeking to impose steep tariffs against top purchasers of Russian oil and gas.

“I have just concluded a highly successful discussion with President Vladimir Putin of Russia, wherein it was agreed that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace,” Mr. Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

He said Russia would supply another 500,000 tonnes of diesel in November, followed by 1 million tonnes immediately thereafter.

“Additionally, based on the condition of their diesel refineries, Russia will then deliver, within a short period of time, 3,000,000 tons of diesel fuel,” Mr. Trump said.

The announcement comes as the U.S. battles high fuel prices amid the war on Iran, which has become a key issue in the midterm elections on November 3.

Several opinion polls have predicted that it would be tough for the Republican Party to retain control of the U.S. Congress in the midterm elections.

Mr. Trump said the U.S.’ control of the Strait of Hormuz, along with the proposed Russian diesel supplies, would bring down fuel prices sharply.

“Between our total control TOTAL CONTROL of the Strait of Hormuz, and this great announcement on Russian Energy, Diesel Prices for Americans and, indeed, the World, will be COMING DOWN, IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST,” the U.S. President said.

Mr. Trump said lower prices for Americans, especially farmers, ranchers, and truckers, are his “greatest priority”.

“This is a very big and important announcement,” he said.

He also reiterated that Iran would not be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.
