The rupee appreciated 20 paise to close at 95.58 (provisional) against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday (September 22, 2026), supported by a sharp fall in crude oil prices on improved global risk sentiments and hopes of diplomatic talks to resolve the U.S.-Iran war.

Forex traders said Brent crude oil prices witnessed a sharp decline after reports surfaced that Iran would open the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the U.S. lifts its port blockade and eases military pressure around it.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 95.75 against the U.S. dollar, then gained some ground and touched 95.55 against the American currency in intraday trade.

At the end of the trading session on Tuesday (September 22, 2026), the rupee settled at 95.58 (provisional) against the American currency, higher by 20 paise from its previous close.

On Monday (September 21, 2026), the rupee appreciated 18 paise to close at 95.78 against the U.S. dollar.

“Indian rupee gained on sharp fall in crude oil prices on media reports that Iran would open the Strait of Hormuz within 7 days if the US lifts its port blockade and eases military pressure around it. US dollar index and US Treasury yields too tumbled from higher levels post the media report,” said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, Mirae Asset Sharekhan.

Mr. Choudhary further noted that the rupee is expected to trade with a positive bias on improved global risk sentiments and hopes of diplomatic talks to resolve the U.S.-Iran war.

“Falling crude oil prices and a decline in the US dollar may also support the rupee. However, any fresh tensions may cap sharp upside. Traders may take cues from ADP weekly employment change data from the US. USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of 95.30 to 95.80,” he said.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 100.34, lower by 0.08%.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading lower by 1.14% at $99.20 per barrel in futures trade.

On the domestic equities market front, Sensex dropped 329.91 points to settle at 74,529.08, while the Nifty was down 85.30 points to 23,329.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹576.20 crore on a net basis on Monday (September 21, 2026), according to exchange data.

Government data released on Monday (September 21, 2026) showed the output of the country’s nine key infrastructure sectors slowed down to a three-month low of 4.8% in August due to a fall in the production of coal, natural gas, crude oil, and fertiliser.

The output expanded by 6.2% in the same month last year and by 5% in July this year.

The rupee extended its gaining momentum for the fifth straight session on Thursday (September 3, 2026), appreciating 14 paise to close at 94.59 (provisional) against the U.S. dollar, buoyed by the country’s improved balance of payment condition following higher-than-expected foreign currency deposits.

India mobilised a record $127.23 billion through FCNR (B), or foreign currency non-resident (bank) deposits under a special central bank programme aimed at bolstering the country’s foreign-exchange liquidity.

Including overseas foreign-currency borrowings (OFCB) and external commercial borrowings (ECB), total inflows under the measures reached $136.377 billion, according to RBI data.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 94.30 and touched an intraday high of 94.26 and a low of 94.59 during the session.

At the end of Thursday’s trading session, the rupee was quoted at 94.59 (provisional), higher by 14 paise from its previous close.

On Wednesday (September 2, 2026), the rupee settled at 94.73, recording a gain of 22 paise.

The local unit gained 27 paise to settle at 94.95 against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, after rising 21 paise and 2 paise in the preceding two sessions on Monday and Friday, respectively. “Indian rupee rose sharply amid huge FCNR deposit inflows and FII buying. Softening of the US dollar and US treasury yields amid sharp appreciation in the Yen also supported the rupee,” said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, Mirae Asset ShareKhan.

Mr. Choudhary said the rupee is expected to trade with a positive bias on optimism over rising foreign inflows, a rise in risk appetite in global markets and softening of the U.S. Dollar.

“However, elevated crude oil prices and any fresh escalation of tensions between the US and Iran may cap sharp upside. Traders may take cues from trade balance, weekly unemployment claims and ISM services PMI data from the US,” Mr. Choudhary added.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 99.22, marginally lower by 0.38% on safe-haven demand amid renewed U.S.-Iran tensions.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading higher by 0.85% at $96.44 per barrel in futures trade, on escalating U.S.-Iran tensions and fears of disruption to oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz.

On the domestic equities market front, Sensex dropped 417.49 points to settle at 76,152.86, while the Nifty fell 41 points to 23,873.45.

Foreign institutional investors purchased equities worth ₹6,688.37 crore on a net basis on Wednesday (September 2, 2026), according to exchange data.

The rupee settled on a flat note on Friday (August 7, 2026), higher by just 2 paise at 95.22 (provisional) against the U.S. dollar, on heightened risk aversion due to fragile negotiations between Iran and Oman over the Strait of Hormuz.

Forex traders said risk aversion in global markets due to uncertainty on the deal between Iran and Oman and an overnight jump in crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiments.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 95.27 against the greenback and traded in a range of 95.19-95.28 during the session. It eventually settled at 95.20 (provisional), higher by 2 paise from its previous close.

On Thursday (August 6, 2026), the rupee depreciated 14 paise to close at 95.22 against the U.S. dollar.

“We expect the rupee to trade with a slight negative bias on uncertainty over the deal between Iran and Oman over the Strait of Hormuz. However, markets may remain volatile over any decision over the weekend.

“Any positive news may support the rupee and vice versa. Traders may also take cues from the non-farm employment report from the U.S. USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of 95 to 95.60,” said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, Mirae Asset ShareKhan.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 99.90, down 0.025%.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading lower by 0.23% at $82.30 per barrel in futures trade.

On the domestic equity market front, Sensex dropped 455.59 points to settle at 78,499.17, while the Nifty was down 65.35 points to 24,570.65.

Foreign institutional investors offloaded equities worth ₹17.86 crore on a net basis on Thursday (August 6, 2026), according to exchange data.

The rupee fell 16 paise to close at 96.32 (provisional) against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday (July 15, 2026), weighed down by heightened tensions in West Asia and a rise in global crude oil prices.

However, positive sentiments in the domestic equity markets and a weaker greenback prevented a sharper decline in the local unit, forex traders said.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 96.12 and traded in the range of 96.04-96.32 during the session. It settled at 96.32 (provisional), down 16 paise from its previous close.

The rupee depreciated 48 paise to close at 96.16 against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday (July 14, 2026).

The U.S. military reimposed a naval blockade on Iran and intensified its airstrike campaign early on Wednesday (July 15, 2026), hitting an Iranian army barracks and killing at least seven troops while wounding 260 people across the country.

Days of retaliatory strikes across West Asia by Iran and the U.S., and both nations’ attempts to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz, threaten to push the region back to an all-out war.

“Elevated oil prices continue to limit the rupee’s upside by increasing India’s import bill and demand for US dollars. Options market pricing still reflects bearish sentiment toward the rupee, indicating that traders remain concerned about geopolitical risks and the possibility of renewed pressure if oil prices rise further,” Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said.

The rupee is expected to stay in the range of 95.80 to 96.50 in the near term with inflows taking it higher towards 95 levels in the coming days, he added.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 100.78, down 0.14%.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose by 0.47% to $85.13 per barrel in futures trade.

On the domestic equity market front, Sensex rose 130.49 points, or 0.17%, to 77,185.43, while Nifty was up 26.45 points, or 0.11%, to 24,078.50.

Foreign Institutional Investors on Tuesday offloaded equities worth ₹739.69 crore in the domestic equity market, according to exchange data.

On the domestic macroeconomic front, wholesale price inflation shot up to 9.87 % in June, from 9.68% in May, led by a sharp spike in prices of food and non-food items.

Net direct tax collection grew 16.40% to over ₹6.51 lakh crore till July 13 this fiscal year, driven by higher corporate tax mop-up, government data showed on Tuesday (July 14, 2026).

The rupee traded in a narrow range against the U.S. dollar in early trade on Thursday (June 4, 2026) as rising equity outflows and dimming prospects of U.S.-Iran truce renewed pressure on the domestic unit.

Forex traders said prolonged West Asia crisis poses a major risk for India, which relies heavily on energy imports.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 95.70, then touched 95.69 in initial trade, registering a rise of 7 paise from its previous close.

On Wednesday (June 3, 2026), the rupee depreciated 40 paise to close at 95.76 against the U.S. dollar.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 99.47, down 0.06%.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading lower by 0.93% at $96.90 per barrel in futures trade.

“For India, every rise in crude oil carries an additional burden. Like an unexpected increase in household expenses, higher oil prices mean more dollars are required to meet import needs, often putting pressure on the rupee,” CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said.

Another factor weighing on sentiment has been persistent foreign fund outflows, traders said.

Foreign investors have withdrawn approximately $26.4 billion from Indian markets this year, already surpassing last year’s record outflows. At the same time, overseas direct investments by Indian companies rose to $48.39 billion during FY 2025-26, while resident remittances abroad touched $28.9 billion, Mr. Pabari said.

Every dollar leaving the country increases demand for foreign currency and adds pressure on the rupee’s valuation, he added.

The spotlight now shifts to the RBI Monetary Policy Committee decision on June 5.

“Ordinarily, markets would be debating growth and inflation. This time, however, policymakers also have to consider a rapidly weakening rupee, elevated oil prices, and shifting global interest-rate expectations,” Mr. Pabari said.

On the domestic equity market front, Sensex declined 229.69 points to 74,139.32 in early trade, while the Nifty dropped 66.30 points to 23,339.

Foreign institutional investors offloaded equities worth ₹5,616.56 crore on a net basis on Wednesday (June 3, 2026), according to exchange data.

The rupee opened on a weak note and depreciated 20 paise to a record low of 95.86 against the U.S. dollar in early trade on Thursday (May 14, 2026), weighed down by elevated crude prices and concerns over the West Asia crisis.

The rupee has now weakened by more than 6% against the U.S. dollar since the West Asia conflict began, making it Asia’s worst-performing currency so far in 2026.

In a major move aimed at protecting foreign exchange reserves, India raised import duties on gold and silver from 6% to 15%, but traders said the rupee’s path will be shaped less by gold and more by crude’s trajectory and the West Asia situation.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 95.74, then fell further to a record low of 95.86 against the U.S. dollar, registering a fall of 20 paise from its previous close.

The rupee on Wednesday (May 13, 2026) slipped to an all-time low of 95.80 against the U.S. dollar, and settled at 95.66 near its record closing low level.

“From jewellery showrooms to fuel stations, every imported commodity is now carrying a heavier price tag — and the rupee is feeling the weight of it,” CR Forex Advisors MD – Amit Pabari said.

Adding to the uncertainty, geopolitical headlines continue to swing market sentiment almost every few hours, Pabari said.

“U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he does not expect China’s help in resolving the Iran conflict, while peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain on hold as both sides continue to disagree on key conditions,” he added.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday (May 14, 2026) said that 2026 will be “historic, landmark year” for China-U.S. relations as he welcomed US President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People for talks with him.

The leaders of ‌the world’s two largest economies are scheduled to have a few rounds of talks on Thursday and Friday.

The visit by President Trump comes amid growing economic and geopolitical uncertainties arising from conflicts in the West East and the subsequent global energy shock that has taken a toll, particularly in Asia.

The two leaders are expected to discuss the war in Iran, trade, technology and Taiwan, among other points of contention, during the visit.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 98.48, down 0.04%.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading higher by 0.44% at $106.10 per barrel in futures trade.

On the domestic equity market front, Sensex jumped 424.44 points to 75,033.42 in early trade, while Nifty climbed 141.90 points to 23,554.50.

Foreign Institutional Investors offloaded equities worth ₹4,703.15 crore on Wednesday (May 13, 2026), according to exchange data.
