England cricket team batter Phil Salt continued his tremendous run of form as he slammed West Indies bowler Romario Shepherd for 30 runs in an over to guide his side to victory in their T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 match on Thursday. Chasing a target of 181, Salt provided the perfect start to the innings for England his unbeaten 87 proved to be deciding factor in the encounter. During the 16th over of the match, Salt, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, produced a display of sublime batting as he slammed Shepherd for 3 fours and 3 sixes to score 30 runs in just 6 balls.

Salt started the over with a boundary through extra cover to bring up his half-century and followed it up with a six straight down the ground. The next ball was a slower one but Salt read it early and slammed it for a four. The pressure was too much for Shepherd as he could not maintain his line and length.

A wide delivery outside the off-stump went for six over long-off while the fifth delivery of the over was once again a six as he sailed over backward square leg. The final ball of the over turned out to be a juicy full-toss and Salt needed no further invitation to slam it over the wide mid-off fielder for another four.

England went on to win the match by 2 wickets. After the match, England cricket team skipper Jos Buttler was all praise for Salt and his destructive batting in such an important match.

“That’s a really good performance from us, we executed well with both bat and ball. I thought we bowled really well to restrict such a powerful batting line-up, still we had to chase it down. but smart play from us. The partnership between Salt and Bairstow was great. I brought Jof back there, Pooran and Russell coming in, two of the best batters in the world, so we brought our best bowler back in. (On Adil Rashid) He’s a really important player, he has got so many variations and restricts runs. He batted at No. 4 today, he is a class player and we have decided to keep backing our class players. It was an incredible innings, a mature senior player’s innings, he batted with a lot of power. A lot of people say you learn when you lose but I also feel you learn when you win, important to reflect on our performance and look back what worked for us and focus on the next game,” Buttler said at the post-match presentation.

Ahead of the clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, former Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma had a hilarious moment with teammate Romario Shepherd when he came across a picture of himself at 20 years old, starting off for the Indian team. PBKS will lock horns with MI in the 33rd fixture of IPL 2024 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh, on Thursday. Mumbai Indians took to social media platform X and posted a video with the caption, “Bholi si surat, aankhon mein masti… Jab Hitman met 20-year-old Ro today.”

In the video, Rohit reacted after seeing the picture of himself at 20 years old, saying that he was a small boy and was struggling to grow a beard.

The Hardik Pandya-led side is currently at the eighth spot in the IPL 2024 points table with just four points, having won only two out of their six matches in the ongoing season. The five-time champions have a net run rate of -0.234 in the 17th edition of the IPL.

Talking about the game against Chennai Super Kings, MI won the toss and put CSK to bat first.

After Ajinkya Rahane (5) and Rachin Ravindra (21 in 16 balls, with two fours and a six) did not make much impact, Gaikwad (69 in 40 balls, with five fours and five sixes) and Shivam Dube (66* in 38 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes) stitched a 90-run partnership. Later, MS Dhoni (20* in four balls) came during the final over and a hat-trick of sixes took CSK to 206/4 in 20 overs.

Hardik Pandya (2/43) was the pick of the bowlers for MI. Shreyas Gopal and Gerald Coetzee got a wicket each.

In the run-chase, MI was off to a fine start, with Ishan Kishan (23 in 15 balls, with three fours and a six) and Rohit having a 70-run partnership.

Rohit managed to score his second IPL ton, but did not get much support from the other end, except for another fifty-run stand with Tilak Varma (31 in 20 balls, with five fours). The Blue and Gold franchise ended with 186/6 on the board, losing by 20 runs.

Matheesha Pathirana (4/28) was the pick of the bowlers for CSK. Mustafizur Rahman and Tushar Deshpande also got a wicket.

A clear mind and a no holds barred approach at death overs hold key for Mumbai Indians’ Romario Shepherd, who powered the five-time IPL champions to a 29-run win over Delhi Capitals in their IPL match in Mumbai on Sunday. The burly Guyanese all-rounder turned on the beast mode to hammer four sixes and two fours in the final over off South African pacer Anrich Nortje to collect 32 runs, finishing with an unbeaten 39 off just 10 balls. Courtesy Shepherd’s blitz, Mumbai notched up their highest score at the Wankhede Stadium and also went on to record their first win of this IPL season.

“Everyone wants to bat a bit and before they start hitting, get used to the condition a bit. But whenever you’re in the 17th over, you just go with a clear mind because there is no holding back,” Shepherd told the media here after the match.

Shepherd said batting with single-mindedness can bring success.

“Whenever you’re in that kind of role you’re even more dangerous, having to just hit the ball because when you ‘see-ball hit-ball’, it’s a more clear mindset than having to be tentative and looking for ones and twos,” he said.

“You play a bit tentative there and may be mis-capitalise on some delivery that you would normally hit.

“But when you’re in the back end and there’s only 18 balls, you will only face about seven, eight or nine out of those balls. You have to maximise and hit it as well as you can,” he added.

The Caribbean player said such an approach could also misfire but that is the nature of the role of being a finisher.

“Especially in the finishing role, there’s a lot of pressure on us because everyone expects us to just go in there and blast sixes. Some days it will come off, some days it won’t. Like today it came off, on the next day, it won’t come off,” he added.

Shepherd said Mumbai were under severe pressure after three defeats in a row and ‘all hands on the deck’ were working to turn around the fortunes.

“It’s a fantastic feeling coming off the mark because three games, three defeats was kind of getting to us. We are a big team and big expectations (are) from us. We did not want to go four down,” he said.

“This game was a game that (had) all hands on deck trying to push forward for the win. We didn’t have a particular target in mind because when you set targets, sometimes you go way off and you maybe go less than what is required in the day,” he added.

“When Ro (Rohit Sharma) got out, (the) coach asked him what was the total and he thought anything over 200 was good because that was a good wicket,” Shepherd said.

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals’ assistant coach Pravin Amre defended his side saying they have been struggling with injuries to a few key players, and said there could be changes to personnel and approach.

“In this format, it’s always those five overs that are critical. Yes, we have to give credit to Shepherd the way he batted, getting 32 runs in the last over and that too against a world-class bowler. It was his day, the way he batted, it was unbelievable,” Amre said during his post-match press conference.

Amre said India bowler Mukesh Kumar is expected to be available from the next game, which would help Delhi address the death over woes as Nortje has consistently leaked runs.

“There is room to improve. We have to work on our bowling, our bowling department has to fire and then only we can win back-to-back games,” he said.

“We have to work on other options because this has not worked for us for the last three games.” “Unfortunately, Mukesh was also not fit for this particular game. I’m hopeful he will be fit for the next game and he can come and bowl at death,” he added.

Romario Shepherd’s 10-ball 39* outmuscled Tristan Stubb’s courageous 71 off 25 balls as Mumbai Indians ended its three-match losing streak in the IPL 2024 with a 29-run win against Delhi Capitals in Mumbai on Sunday. Conceding as many as 51 runs in the last two overs proved catastrophic for Delhi Capitals, whose bowlers remained wayward and batters lacked the spunk in the initial overs to go after MI bowlers, even though Stubbs went ballistic to make 25-ball 71 not out.

The right-handed Stubbs smacked as many as seven sixes and three fours but his effort could only reduce the margin of defeat for Delhi, who lost a flurry of wickets towards the end to finish at 205 for eight in reply to Mumbai Indians’ 234 for five. Once again poor quality of domestic talent in DC set-up proved to be their undoing.

Save Abhishek Porel, none of the other young uncapped Indians have measured up.

While Mumbai Indians managed to open their account in the points table after three losses upfront, the win also helped them leapfrog both Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi Capitals to jump to the seventh spot while also improving their NRR to -0.704.

On their part, a fourth loss in five matches resulted in Delhi Capitals slipping down to the bottom of the table and they now also have the worst NRR of -1.370 among all teams.

Shepherd hurt Delhi Capitals the most, clobbering four sixes and two fours off Anrich Nortje’s 20th over to collect 32 runs and returned with the ball to get the prized scalp of David Warner (10).

Later in the game, Shepherd was on the receiving end too, ending as the costliest of all bowlers by giving away 54 runs among all those who finished their four-over spells for Mumbai.

Shepherd’s onslaught featuring four sixes and three fours topped a collective effort which Mumbai Indians came up with in the first half of the game to register their highest-ever score at their homeground.

When DC started its chase, Prithvi Shaw came up with a 40-ball 66 with three sixes and eight fours but the asking rate kept soaring beyond its reach.

The No 3 Porel hit a few attractive strokes but failed to make the most of a lifeline he got while batting on 30. The left-hander eventually perished for a 31-ball 41 with five fours, and following him back in the hut soon was Delhi captain Rishabh Pant (1).

Delhi’s lower order too cut a sorry figure with Axar Patel (8), Lalit Yadav (3), debutant Kumar Kushagra (0) and Jhye Richardson (2) falling in quick succession giving Gerald Coetzee, four wicket haul.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians batting unit fired in unison to post an imposing 234 for 5 against Delhi Capitals.

Nortje’s final figures read a sorry 2 for 65 in 4 overs. Ishant Sharma, in all likelihood, playing his last IPL edition, is looking a pale shadow of his very old self, being taken for 40 in 3 overs. Mostly he is huffing and puffing to the bowling mark and also at times not able to finish his follow through. The pace has dipped alarmingly but DC have no option but to play him.

Shepherd was last to join the party but seemed to have made the most of it, after each of Rohit Sharma (49 off 27 balls), Ishan Kishan (42 off 23 balls), Hardik Pandya (39 off 30) and Tim David (45 not out off 21 balls, 2 fours, 4 sixes) also made merry in batting-friendly conditions at the Wankhede Stadium.

It was, however, a forgettable outing for Suryakumar Yadav, who perished for two-ball duck on his first game since mid-December last year.

But David’s fiery knock and Shepherd’s late fireworks ensured that they still had a huge total on board.

Mumbai’s cause in general was also aided by wayward Delhi bowlers through the course of the innings, who kept feeding them balls in the zone to hit or those with enough width off which the batters could take their chances.

Mumbai Indians batter Romario Shepherd slammed 32 runs in the final over to claim a massive record during the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Sunday. Shepherd took DC fast bowler Anrich Nortje to the cleaners as he scored two fours and four sixes to register the costliest over of this year’s competition. The West Indies international started the over with a four straight down the ground followed by a six over long-on. The third delivery from Nortje was a straight one but Shepherd shuffled across the stumps and heaved it for another six on the leg-side. A six over sweeper cover and a four through long-on followed with Shepherd finishing the show with a massive hit over wide long-on.

The destructive batting display left the Mumbai Indians dressing room completely stunned with Sachin Tendulkar applauding the effort and skipper Hardik Pandya‘s expressions going viral on social media.

Mumbai Indians posted an imposing 234 for 5 against Delhi Capitals on a placid track.

Former skipper Rohit Sharma provided a blazing start, scoring 49 off 27 balls and added 80 for the opening stand in just 7 overs with Ishan Kishan (42 off 23 balls), while Hardik Pandya (39 off 33 balls) and Tim David (45 not out off 21 balls) also got useful runs at the back-end.

But it was Romario Shepherd, who smashed 39 of 10 balls with 32 coming off the final over from Anrich Nortje (2/65 in 4 overs) that might have taken the target beyond DC’s reach.

Axar Patel (2/35) provided important breakthroughs for DC.
