Gautam Gambhir‘s appointment as Team India’s head coach concluded Rahul Dravid‘s tenure in charge of the Indian men’s cricket team. Dravid led the Indian team to triumph in T20 World Cup 2024 after disappointments in the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup. As the BCCI put a new man in charge of the team in the form of Gambhir, Rohit Sharma‘s wife Ritika Sajdeh took to social media to pay an ultimate tribute to Dravid, who remains one of the most respected cricketers in history.

In her post, Ritika wrote that the entire Sharma family will miss Dravid, especially their daughter Samaira.

“So many emotions, you mean so much to our entire family. You will be missed so much. I think Sammy will miss you the most,” she wrote.

Earlier on Tuesday, Rohit also paid tribute to Dravid, saying Ritika calls the India coach his ‘work wife’ and he is lucky to call you that too.

“My wife (Ritika Sajdeh) refers to you as my work wife and I am lucky to get to call you that too,” Rohit wrote on his Instagram page.

“I have been trying to find the right words to properly express my feelings on this but I’m not sure I ever will,” the Indian skipper, not known to be overtly emotional, wrote.

“You are an absolute stalwart of this game but you left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach and came on a level where we all felt comfortable enough to say just about anything to you.

“That is your gift, your humility and your love for this game even after all this time,” Rohit wrote.

Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar has stated that the key to India becoming “invincible” in Test cricket lies on how Hardik Pandya is utilised. The all-rounder played a starring role as India lifted the 2024 T20 World Cup in June. Now, Gavaskar has called for him to come back to the Test setup, with a packed season of Test matches coming up for India later this year. Rohit Sharma and co. are set to play three tests against New Zealand in October, and then tour Australia for a four-Test series in late November. Gavaskar has stated that star all-rounder Hardik Pandya can be the difference-maker during this period.

Gavaskar has opined that if Pandya begins to bowl, Team India will be unstoppable irrespective of the conditions or the opposition up against them.

“I’m hoping that, in these next two months, there will be some effort made to try and convince Hardik Pandya to come back to Test cricket,” Gavaskar told RevSportz.

“If he starts batting at no. 6 or 7, maybe bowling just ten overs a day, but there with his batting, this Indian team will be pretty much invincible in any country, on any kind of surface,” Gavaskar added.

Pandya has not played Test match cricket in nearly six years, and has played only 11 Tests in his entire career. However, with a rise in form and a gaping hole for a pace-bowling all-rounder still existing in Tests, he could be convinced to return.

Newly-appointed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir will have his tenure tested for the first time later this year as India continue their 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

Pandya was heavily criticised during IPL 2024 after taking over captaincy of the Mumbai Indians from Rohit Sharma, as the franchise finished bottom of the table. However, his performances in India’s victorious 2024 T20 World Cup campaign has changed public opinion about Pandya once again.

India vs Zimbabwe: Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Honest Take On Demotion In Batting Border https://artifex.news/india-vs-zimbabwe-ruturaj-gaikwads-honest-take-on-demotion-in-batting-border-6068257/ Wed, 10 Jul 2024 08:17:27 +0000 https://artifex.news/india-vs-zimbabwe-ruturaj-gaikwads-honest-take-on-demotion-in-batting-border-6068257/ Read More “India vs Zimbabwe: Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Honest Take On Demotion In Batting Border” »

India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad knows well that it will be “tough” and “hard” to replace retired Virat Kohli at number three spot in T20Is and said he is just focusing on making valuable contributions with the bat in whatever position the team leadership deems fit. The retirement of Kohli, skipper Rohit Sharma and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja from the shortest format following the T20 World Cup triumph has opened the doors for the upcoming players and Gaikwad is one such talented batter who has the potential to seal the No. 3 spot. “This is a big topic and I think it’s not the right point to think about it. To even compare with him (Kohli) or try to fill in his shoes is relatively very tough and very hard,” Gaikwad said on the eve of the third T20I against Zimbabwe.

“As I had said in the IPL as well, it is difficult to fill Mahi Bhai’s shoes as well. Definitely, you want to start your career, you want to start the way you want, you want to play your own game. So that’s the priority right now.”

“Focus on one game, focus on how you can contribute towards the team in whichever position you play and make sure you are on the winning side more often than not.”

Gaikwad has batted at No. 3 position for India in the first two T20Is against Zimbabwe but the Pune-born cricketer said he has no preference and will bat wherever the team requires him.

“No, wherever the team wants, I will bat there. There is no problem. There is not much difference between the opening and the number 3 because you have to play the new ball. So there is not much difference,” he said.

Gaikwad led the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL this year and he said captaincy has made him to get more involved in the game though it didn’t make any difference to his batting.

“Actually, to be honest, nothing has changed much. Because my batting has been the same as before. I have to play with responsibility and try and finish it on my own,” he said.

“It’s just that the way you look at the game, I think every time you are more involved now in the game since you have captained the IPL franchise for a long period of time.

“So you tend to be into the game for a longer period of time instead of just staying in the boundary outside and just focusing on one ball. As I said, batting wise it’s not made much difference.”

Young opener Abhishek Sharma had spoken about how Gaikwad helped him in “keeping perspective” as he went hammer and tongs to blast a match-winning 47-ball 100 in the second T20I.

“Actually, communication is not from a senior player,” Gaikwad said.

“It comes from a batting partner because obviously with non-strikers you feel something about a particular bowler or particular conditions and you have to have that confidence to go and share with your partner whatever you feel and what are the right options, what to do in certain situations.

“Definitely this is something which I have been doing it being part of all the teams whether state team, IPL team or Indian team as well…”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi backed the Indian contingent to put their strength on display at the upcoming Paris Olympics. Over the years, India’s contingent for the Summer Games has steadily increased in number. At the Tokyo Olympics, India sent its largest contingent, consisting of 124 athletes and won seven medals. This was the biggest medal tally that India has managed to achieve in a single edition of the Summer Games. As of Sunday, 82 athletes had managed to qualify for the Paris edition, according to Olympics.com.

With more than two weeks left, India will be hoping that more players are able to make the cut for the Paris Olympics, which will kick off on July 26.

PM Modi backed the Indian contingent and believes that a “great team” is being sent for the upcoming edition of the Summer Games, which will showcase its strength.

“India is sending a great team to the Paris Olympics. You will see how the entire team and athletes will show their strength. This self-confidence of the youth is the real capital of India, and this youth power shows the biggest potential to take India to new heights in the 21st century,” PM Modi said while addressing the Indian community in Moscow.

PM Modi also commended the Indian players for the commitment and attitude that they showed in the T20 World Cup.

India dominated every team that they encountered en route to the final. India was tottering with South Africa, needing just 30 runs off 30 deliveries to take away the trophy.

With Heinrich Klaasen on the field, South Africa looked bound to walk away with the title and leave India with yet another heartbreak.

However, the Indian pace trio of Arshdeep Singh, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah made the South African batters struggle for each run. South Africa succumbed to the pressure and sealed a 7-run win to end their 13-year-long ICC World Cup drought.

While praising the level of commitment that the players showed in the dire situation, PM Modi said, “You too must have celebrated the victory in the recent T20 World Cup. The real story of winning the World Cup is also the journey of victory. Today’s youth of India does not accept defeat till the last ball and the last moment. Victory belongs to those who are not ready to accept defeat.”

Earlier on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an informal meeting at the Novo-Ogaryovo residence of the Russian president near Moscow.

The Russian Foreign Ministry shared a video on X showing a warm greeting between PM Modi and Vladimir Putin.

The clip, posted on Monday, shows the two leaders embracing each other as PM Modi arrives at the president’s residence, marking the start of their informal meeting.

PM Modi arrived in Moscow for an official visit on Monday, where he was received by Denis Manturov, the first Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, at the Vnukovo-II airport and was accorded a ceremonial welcome. The Indian community gave PM Modi a warm welcome at the hotel.

India captain Rohit Sharma came up with an emotional post on social media for former head coach of the team, Rahul Dravid. The latter’s coaching tenure ended with the conclusion of T20 World Cup 2024. It was a dream finish to Dravid’s role as the India great eventually managed to win a major ICC trophy, something he failed to do during his playing career. Rohit praised Rahul’s humility and expressed happiness for the fact that the legend signed off with a World Cup trophy.

“Dear Rahul bhai, I have been trying to find the right words to properly express my feelings on this but I’m not sure I ever will so here’s my attempt,” wrote Rohit in a post on Instagram.

In his post, Rohit also revealed that his wife Ritika Sajdeh refers to Dravid as his “work wife”

“Since my childhood days I have looked up to you just like billions of others but I was lucky enough to get to work with you this closely. You are an absolute stalwart of this game but you left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach and came on a level where we all felt comfortable enough to say just about anything to you. That is your gift, your humility and your love for this game even after all this time. I have learnt so much from you and every memory will be cherished. My wife refers to you as my work wife and I’m lucky to get to call you that too,” the India captain wrote.

“This was the only thing missing from your arsenal and I’m so happy that we got to achieve it together. Rahul bhai it has been an absolute privilege to get to call you my confidant, my coach and my friend,” he added.

Rohit Sharma called time on his T20I career after India’s T20 World Cup triumph last month. He remains available for Tests and ODIs.

India spinner Kuldeep Yadav believes that the stalwart trio of Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja and Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from the T20I format is “personal,” and their absence will open a window of opportunity for the youngsters. The T20 World Cup final carried a mixed bag of emotions for the Indian fans. While there were tears of joy as India ended their ICC World Cup drought that lasted for 13 years, there were tears of sorrow as well with the three star players bidding adieu to the shortest format of cricket.

While announcing his retirement, Kohli said that it was time for him to pass the baton on to the younger generation.

Sharing similar views about giving an opportunity to the younger generation, Kuldeep told ANI, “It is their personal decision. They have achieved a lot for India. I hope that youngsters will get good opportunities. They announced their retirement after winning the T20 World Cup and there is no better achievement than that.”

India were stuck in a peculiar situation when the required run rate came down to six. South Africa needed 30 runs in the final five overs to walk away with the trophy.

However, the pace trio of Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya made the opposition batters sweat hard for each run.

Their efforts helped India end their 13-year-long T20 World Cup drought with a 7-run win in Barbados.

“It was a good approach. We were desperate to win the World Cup. We achieved what we wanted to,” Kuldeep added.

Recently, there have been rumours around Kuldeep’s marriage. The ‘Chinaman’ spinner remained tight-lipped about his future partner and said, “There is still time in that and hopefully you will get to know about it.”

On Thursday morning, the T20 World Cup-winning Indian team touched down in the national capital, Delhi, to a rousing welcome from fans eagerly waiting for a glimpse of their favourite heroes and the trophy.

Following their meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the players had an open bus victory parade in Mumbai, from Marine Drive to the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

The champion team was also felicitated with the prize money of Rs 125 crore by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) office-bearers.

Star batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their shock retirements from the format after helping India win their second T20 World Cup last month in Barbados. During the post-match presentation-ceremony, Kohli insisted that the T20 World Cup final against South Africa will be his last for India in the format, adding that “it’s time for the next generation” to take over. A few hours later, India captain Rohit Sharma, during a press conference, decided to bid adieu to the format. Both, however, will continue to play for India in longer formats.

Now, a video of Kohli and Rohit sharing a hug after coming out to bat against South Africa in the final has gone viral. The moment went unnoticed during the final, but with the two now saying goodbye to the format, it is fair to say that it was sign that the two were going to retire after the final, even if the result didn’t went in India’s favour.

Watch the video here:

Shortly after announcing his T20I retirement, Rohit called the 2024 T20 World Cup win, which India won as an unbeaten team in the competition, as the greatest achievement of his playing career.

Rohit amassed 257 runs at a strike rate of 156.70, and took on the responsibility of giving India fast starts with the bat – with his fifties against Australia and England being crucial.

Kohli, on the other hand, scored just 75 runs before the final. However, he came good in the summit clash, scoring a crucial 76 which earned him the Man of the Match award.

Kohli hung his boot from the T20I format ending his T20I career as India’s second-highest run-scorer in the format, through 4188 runs in 125 games at an average of 48.69 and strike rate of 137.04.

He ended his international career in the format with the most runs of any player at Men’s T20 World Cups (1,292 runs) between 2012 and 2024, in 33 innings across 35 matches.

India spinner Kuldeep Yadav has dedicated the team’s T20 World Cup triumph to captain Rohit Sharma. India defeated South Africa in the T20 World Cup final last week in Barbados, ending a long 11-year wait to lift an ICC trophy. Rohit led the team from the front, scoring 257 runs during the tournament. He scored a match-winning 92 against Australia, and followed it up with another half-century against England in the semi-finals. During a recent interaction, Kuldeep praised Rohit for “loving the team” and leading from the front.

“This World Cup was for him, the way he planned and the way he loved this team. The intent and approach that he used to talk about in team meetings, he implemented that in the tournament while batting, led from the front. So this trophy is for him,” Kuldeep told Sports Today.

Kuldeep also praised Rohit, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja for their contributions to the team. The three veterans announced their T20I retirement after the final.

“There is probably no better feeling than this. In the final Virat bhai hit the 70-odd runs, won the player of the match. I am sure he will be very happy with his career in the T20 format, same for Rohit bhai. Jadeja as well, he played such brilliant cricket over the years,” he added.

On Team India’s celebrations with the fans in Mumbai, Kuldeep said: “I’ll never forget it. It was the first time I experienced something like that. Rohit bhai probably experienced that earlier as he had won in 2007. What happened in Mumbai was just unreal for me.”

Meanwhile, Kuldeep was one of the vital cogs for the team, having bagged 10 wickets in just four matches during the tournament. He has been rested for the ongoing tour of Zimbabwe, but is likely to return to the team for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

India are set to play three ODIs and as many T20Is against Sri Lanka, starting July 27.

India skipper Rohit Sharma and premier batter Virat Kohli are likely to be rested for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in August and either Hardik Pandya or KL Rahul will be asked to lead the side. India pacer Jasprit Bumrah too is likely to be given a break from the ODI series. It is understood that Indian cricket’s biggest contemporary stars have sought a longish break from the BCCI, considering the gruelling last three months since the start of IPL. For 37-year-old Rohit, it has been close to six months that he took a break.

The Mumbaikar played every series since the South Africa Test series in December-January, followed by Afghanistan T20Is, England Test series, IPL, and the recently-concluded T20 World Cup.

“Both are automatic choices in ODI set up and the three 50 over games against England before the Champions Trophy is good enough practice for them. For the next few months, they both will prioritize Tests and India will play 10 of them between September to January,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

India play 2 Tests versus Bangladesh, followed by three against New Zealand before the big-ticket five Test Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia Down Under.

It is understood that selectors as well as the seniors would like to manage their workload judiciously.

“The Champions Trophy will happen in mid February and they don’t need to go for a week-long 3 match ODIs in Sri Lanka. If they want, they are most welcome but I guess they would want rest,” the source added.

In Rohit’s absence, Pandya looks the most likely choice but KL Rahul, who led the ODI squad in South Africa can’t be ruled out either.

The recently-crowned T20 world champion Indian cricket team has been invited to celebrate its triumph in Maldives by the country’s tourism association and its marketing and public relations corporation. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team won the trophy in Barbados after beating South Africa by seven runs in the final on June 29. “Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/ Visit Maldives) in collaboration with the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) have jointly extended a special and open invitation to the Indian National Cricket Team,” the two bodies said in a joint statement.

Ibrahim Shiuree, the CEO and Managing Director of MMPRC, and Ahmed Nazeer, Secretary General of MATI, said they look forward to hosting the team, which returned to India on Thursday last week.

It was welcomed by frenzied fans in both Delhi and Mumbai, which also played host to a victory parade featuring lakhs of supporters.

“We would be honoured to host you and ensure that your stay is filled with memorable moments, relaxation, and bespoke experiences,” Shiuree and Nazeer said in in the joint statement.

They said the invitation also highlights the strong and long-standing cultural and sporting ties between the Maldives and India.

“It would be an immense honour for the Maldives to welcome the Indian Cricket Team and share in the joy of their triumph,” Shiuree further said.

“We eagerly await the opportunity to host them, offering the perfect setting for them to create lasting memories of their victory celebration,” he added.

The team is currently on a break. Its next international assignment is a six-match limited-overs series against Sri Lanka beginning July 27. The series comprises three ODIs and as many T20 Internationals.
