Lucknow Super Giants spinner Amit Mishra’s remarks on star India batter Virat Kohli have sparked a huge debate. Mishra, who recently appeared on a podcast, stated that due to immense power and fame, Virat has changed a lot as a person and the relationship between the duo is not the same anymore. As Mishra’s statement went viral, the social media divided as many came in support of Kohli and criticised the spinner. Recently, former India batter Robin Uthappa also hailed Kohli for his hard work and personality.

Uthappa, who was a part of the Indian team that won the 2007 T20 World Cup, said that the former Royal Challengers Bengaluru skipper has evolved into a mature human being.

“I have actually seen Virat kind of evolve from a brash young Delhi boy to an evolved human being. You know the evolution has been quite tremendous, to be honest. Today he’s practically reaping what he had sown 15 years ago. One of the things that has always stood out to me about Cheeku has been his conviction in himself,” Uthappa said on cricket.com/tv.

“When I listen to a young 19-year-old Virat Kohli, you know talking about himself or his conviction in himself, you’ll get mortified, you’ll be like ‘What is this dude talking about?’. “But fast forward 10 years and you be like ‘Okay now that makes sense,” he added.

Earlier, Punjab Kings star batter Shashank Singh also came in support of Kohli and shared an interesting tale from the IPL.

“He was standing, I was standing. We were standing for 40 minutes. I didn’t even know when 40 minutes passed. Our team position was 12:45. It was 12:40, I didn’t know when 40 minutes passed. And we were talking about cricket, about technique, about shots, about mental chatter,” Shashank Singh told InsideSport.

“And the way he was answering, it felt like, keep doing it, keep doing it. It felt like, he is one of our Chhattisgarh players. He was so friendly, talking to me to help me understand. It felt so good to talk to him,” he added.

In a moving tribute to the Indian team, former batter Robin Uthappa couldn’t control his emotions as he recalled the struggles and hardships of the players after the T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. India ended a 13-year wait for an ICC title on Saturday, beating South Africa in the final of the T20 World Cup in Barbados. The past 12 months or so have been hard for each and every player, with India losting back-to-back finals (World Test Championship and ODI World Cup).

While recalling the struggles of the players, Uthappa started crying during a discussion with veteran India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Uthappa, who was part of India’s maiden T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2007, suggested that the constant trolling each player had to face, including Ashwin, wasn’t easy.

“I was so full of emotions, you would’ve found me in tears. I went through each player individually, and what they have been through. I apologise in advance if i get emotional on this show, but when you go through each player individually, and what they’ve been through over he past 4-5 years — trolling, criticism — and you’ve been part of it as well, so you know what it feels like. To go through the struggle, to go through the hardships, to take the trolling and the hate is not easy,” Uthappa said Ashwin during a discussion on his YouTube channel.

Uthappa went on to continue by saying that as cricketers, every player in India has to go through harsh trolling and criticism at some point of time in their careers. Even Ashwin had teary eyes while Uthappa was narrating the same.

“I could feel the emotions of each player individually. I cried for the first 20 minutes after the victory. I went and bowed before god, saying thank you. As a cricketer who has represented India, thank you. This victory was so special special cause it was long incoming. Anyone who has played for India and represented the country knows the kind of crap we are put through. If i look at Rahul Dravid‘s journey as a coach, what an absolute mentor he has been. We say a 50-year-old man celebrate like a kid when the World Cup trophy was given to him. This is the beauty of the sport. I am so grateful to god for everyone. All of the players deserve to win the World Cup,” he added.

Former Indian cricket team star Robin Uthappa believes that senior players should have taken a back seat and India should have opted for young talents in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. The ongoing IPL 2024 has seen multiple young cricketers producing brilliant performances and he cited the examples of Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma to show that their good run of form did not translate into their selection for the tournament. Uthappa was asked about the exclusion of Gill and Rinku Singh from the 15-member squad and he said that the senior cricketers should have moved on after the 2022 T20 World Cup and this year, the team should have gone with youngsters who are in good touch.

“I’m gonna catch a lot of flak for this, but I’ll take it. I think they should’ve moved on after the previous World Cup itself,” Uthappa said while speaking on JioCinema.

“I think the youngsters should’ve played in this World Cup. The senior players have had their go, and these guys are showing true potential. The fact that they’ve been performing in IPL consistently… a lot of these guys who are performing now, the likes of Shubman Gill should be there,” Uthappa added.

Rohit Sharma will be leading the Indian cricket team in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 with Hardik Pandya serving as his deputy. Veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal made a sensational comeback to the side with Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel being the other spin options.

KL Rahul was a big exclusion from the side with the team management choosing two specialist wicket-keeper batters in Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar and skipper Rohit Sharma explained that they were looking at wicket-keeping options who can bat in the middle order.

However, KL Rahul played as an opener for Lucknow Super Giants in  IPL 2024.

It has been a horrible IPL 2024 campaign for Royal Challengers Bengaluru as the Faf Du Plessis slumped to a narrow one-run loss against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday. It was the seventh loss for RCB in eight matches and they are currently at the bottom of the points table. The franchise, which enjoys an extremely loyal fanbase, has always boasted of big-name players but have failed to win the competition even once. Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa advised RCB to bring back some of the match-winners that they let go over the years beginning with star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

“First, I would go and beg Yuzvendra Chahal to come back. I would do anything; go through hell and high water to bring Yuzi back from RR, make amends. I would maybe even go and bring Harshal Patel back and prepare wickets that are conducive for bowlers there to succeed. Look at the calibre of batters they have – Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli, Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik – but bowlers? They’ve had such great batters. AB de Villiers played for them; Chris Gayle played for them. Travis Head played for them. Shane Watson,” Uthappa said on The Ranveer Show Podcast.

Chahal is currently the most successful bowler in the history of the IPL but RCB did not retain him after the 2021 season and he ended up joining Rajasthan Royals.

Chahal was not the only star players that left RCB and succeeded with another franchise as players like Shivam Dube and Devdutt Padikkal have also shown great promise. Uthappa said that RCB need to break this pattern and make sure that the team need to hold on to their big players.

“Now let’s look at domestic players. Manish Panday, myself, Karun Nair, Mayank Agarwal, Devdutt Padikkal… they’ve let them all go. Rahul Dravid is the highest scorer for them after Virat Kohli. Crazy right? It tells you a story. If you move from that narrative and say that Virat Kohli, irrespective of wickets and conditions, knows how to score runs. He will score runs. In KKR, when they won in 2012, 2014, 170 was a winning total. You have to make it harder to score runs. RCB can’t do it. Invest a lot more in bowling and middle order. And sustain them. Exercise the faith. Look at the number of players that have played for RCB this IPL alone. Almost 25,” added Uthappa.

Following Gujarat Titans’ (GT) 3-wicket win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, the former cricketer Robin Uthappa showered praise on Shubman Gill and said that the 24-year-old will lead “Indian team in near future”. Gill played a 35-run knock from 29 balls against PBKS at a strike rate of 120.69. He slammed five fours on Sunday. Speaking on Jio Cinema, Uthappa felt that Gill is a “gift” for Indian cricket. He added that the 24-year-old will grow up into a “prolific leader”.

“Yeah, I think he’s a gift for Indian cricket. I think he’s someone who’s maturing into an all-time great within the Indian cricket fraternity. And I think, we’ve seen him thrive, and we’re seeing him grow into a very prolific leader who is going to lead not just his IPL side, but I also think the Indian team in the near future,” Uthappa said.

Uthappa said Gill went about his innings in the right way.

“Great innings. I thought he went about his innings the right way because it’s important for him to bat through the course of the innings for GT to get success, so he approached it in that fashion. He needed someone to play a little bit more aggressively at the end and take off pressure from him so that he could play that,” he added.

Recapping the match, a fine spell from Sai Kishore (4/33) bundled out PBKS for 142 in their 20 overs.

PBKS failed to capitalise on momentum from a half-century of skipper Sam Curran (20) and Prabhsimran Singh (35) and it was contributions from Harpreet Brar (29) and Harpreet Singh (14) that took PBKS beyond 100 runs.

GT faced hiccups in their chase too, but knocks from Rahul Tewatia (36*), skipper Shubman Gill (35) and Sai Sudharsan (31) took the team to the finishing line with three wickets and five balls to spare.

Harshal Patel (3/15) was the pick of the bowlers for PBKS. Sai Kishore took home the Player of the Match award.

GT are in the sixth spot with four wins and four losses, giving them eight points. PBKS are in ninth spot, with two wins and six losses, giving them four points.

Former Indian cricket team batter Robin Uthappa revealed his shocking experiences during his time with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL after he had a disappointing run of form in the 2019 season. Uthappa was part of the KKR squad from 2014 to 2019 before moving to Rajasthan Royals and eventually finishing his career at Chennai Super Kings in 2022. In the latest episode of The Ranveer Show, Uthappa alleged that he faced a lot of judgement and bad treatment following a bad performance in 2019. He added that he believes that as a senior professional, he was not treated well at KKR.

“Lack of performance and the judgments of performance. Let’s see, for example, I remember I was absolutely fine during my last year with KKR. For whatever reason, towards the end, personally from my perspective, I wasn’t treated very well. As a senior pro, I wasn’t treated very well.”

“And in that instance, my last match for KKR was a horrible game. I had a bad day at work and my work was there for everyone to judge and criticise and I got criticised. I got taken to the cleaners. And I can tell you, in that time after that, for a good. Two-three months, I switched off my comments on social media.”

Uthappa further said that he left social media for 2-3 months due to the criticism from the fans and decided to concentrate on his family rather than dwelling on the negative comments.

“I got off social media because if I was on social media, I could feel the anxiety and the depression coming back. By then, my son was one year old. I had a wife and a son and I didn’t want to go through that whole that whole gambit again. So, I had to make a very conscious choice to say, you know what?”

“I don’t want to deal with this. Let me focus on my family and I had a bad day and a bad day doesn’t dictate my life and I know what led to that bad day and why I got there and all of that, which is a. If I ever write a book, I’ll probably write about it. I won’t write a book but I’ll share that absolutely.”

Since the time, the IPL 2024 began, one player who has been at the receiving end of fans’s criticism is Hardik Pandya. His replacing Rohit Sharma as the captain of Mumbai Indians did not go down well with most fans. Every time Hardik Pandya appeared for toss or did something on the field, he was mostly booed by the fans present. It happened at MI’s home-ground Wankhede Stadium too. While he has not publicly spoken about it, Hardik Pandya is under pressure.

The inconsistent start of MI at the IPL 2024 has added to his woes.

Former Indian cricket team player Robin Uthappa, member of the 2007 T20 World Cup winning team, spoke in detail about Hardik Pandya’s ordeal on The Ranveer Show.

“”He is a guy who has got the calibre and potential to be an all-time great for Indian team. He was let go by the team which discovered him, he went to another franchise. After winning 3-4 titles with them, he left. He must have felt a little bad; that will be there. He went to GT, won a title and finished runners-up in another. Then the conversation began,” Uthappa said.

“The mocking, trolling, the memes about his fitness. You don’t think it hurts him? It hurts him. It hurts any human being. How many people actually know the reality of it? Hardik is dealing with mental health issues, for sure. We, as people, I understand, as Indians, we are emotional. But it is not right to impose this kind of treatment on any human being. It is unbecoming as a society for us to do that to someone and be okay with it. We should not be laughing along with it. We should not be forwarding these memes.”

Uthappa added that the all-rounder is right in securing his career.

“It’s our job, yes it’s passion too, but it’s what puts the food on the table for me. My job is on display for you to criticise. A corporate person’s job is not on television to criticise, or have an opinion about either. When that is the case, you have to exercise a certain amount of empathy and dignity to the other person to allow them to fail. One of the most beautiful things we did as a country is our expression to love, and our reaction to our Indian team after we lost the World Cup. That’s how we should be as a society, and as Indians,” said Uthappa

There has been a lot of speculation over Virat Kohli‘s inclusion in the Indian cricket team squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. While there are some who suggested that India should look at selecting a younger side, others think that the team will be incomplete without a talented veteran like Kohli. Following his brilliant half-century against Punjab Kings in IPL 2024, Kohli gave a sharp response to his critics with a sly remark. “I know my name is quite attached to just promoting the game in many parts of the world when it comes to T20 cricket, but I have still got it I guess,” he said. While his remark was praised by many, ex-India star Robin Uthappa believes that it was ‘unnecessary’ in the situation.

Uthappa, who was part of the discussion panel on Jio Cinema ahead of RCB’s match against KKR on Friday, said that the decision is up to the selectors and Kohli does not need to say these things.

“I think what he even said at the last game felt so unnecessary. He didn’t have to say that because I think there was never a question in anyone’s mind about his ability or what he can bring to the table. As far as batting is concerned, he is a class act, but India hasn’t. And he’s his intentions, alright, that he wants to be a part of that T20 World cup. Well, it’s up to the selectors if they’re going to look at a young squad or if they’re going to go with the tried and tested veterans who’ve done really well for the country and for themselves and in the IPL in the past. So that’s up to the selectors. But he’s kind of stated, okay, I want to go now. I really want to go and give this a one last score to get a T20 World cup as well,” he said.

Following his side’s loss against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) skipper Faf Du Plessis said that the wicket was two-paced in the first innings, causing players to struggle a bit with their batting.

With a scintillating batting display, the Kolkata Knight Riders became the first team to win away from home in this IPL following their comprehensive seven-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Friday at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Faf said, “In the first innings, we thought that the wicket was very two-paced, you could see that when the guys bowled the cutters, back of a length, the guys really struggled. We thought it was a decent score knowing that it gets a little bit easier in the evening, there was a little bit of dew that came in. Looking at the way we batted in the first inning, even if you have someone in there, Virat was struggling to hit the ball just because there was a lack of pace and the surface was two-paced.”

There has been a lot of speculation over the relationship between Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya after the change in captaincy in Mumbai Indians ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Hardik ended Rohit’s ten-year tenure as MI captain after completing a sensational trade move from Gujarat Titans. Hardik was not able to win his first match as MI skipper and that added to the chat around a possible rift in the side. However, former India batter Robin Uthappa pointed out an incident after the match against Gujarat Titans that can prove to be good news for all Mumbai Indians fans. Rohit and Hardik had a long conversation after the match and Uthappa said the two cricketers are clearly exchanging ideas.

“I actually quite like this. It’s quite heartening to see the two of these guys having this conversation. I am sure the Mumbai Indians fans who want them to succeed will be enjoying this conversation. I am sure Rohit here, from what we see, is passing on information with Hardik and Hardik is listening like someone who wants to understand things. This is good news, this looks good to me. This will hold Mumbai Indians in good stead as the team moves forward,” Robin Uthappa told Jio Cinema.

Uthappa also praised Rohit for passing on his experience to Hardik and even pointed out that with all the chatter around the two cricketers, Rohit did not have to do it.

“It goes on to show what an incredible person Rohit Sharma is. He doesn’t have to do this with everything we have heard about how things have transpired. It’s very nice of him, wonderful to see him do this.”

An inexplicable batting strategy by Mumbai Indians at the death saw Shubman Gill make an auspicious debut as Gujarat Titans captain with a thrilling six-run victory in their opening IPL game on Sunday.

Jasprit Bumrah (3/14) was at his absolute best in his first IPL game in two years, firing in his express yorkers at will to help Mumbai Indians restrict Gujarat Titans to 168/6.

But Bumrah’s effort was not enough as batters like Tilak Varma and skipper Hardik Pandya failed to complement his brilliance.

MI ended at 162/9 as things went downhill when all they needed was 43 runs off last five overs with seven wickets in hand.

MI thus failed to break their opening game jinx. The last time they won their IPL opener was against Chennai Super Kings way back in 2012.

MS Dhoni will be back in action on the cricket field when the IPL 2024 starts on March 22, with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) set to host the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the tournament opener. Dhoni hasn’t played competitive cricket since the IPL 2023 final last year where he led CSK to a record-equalling fifth title. Dhoni carried a knee issue during the last season, before undergoing a successful surgery to address his the problem. While there has been a lot of speculation is the IPL 2024 is going to be Dhoni’s last, former CSK batter Robin Uthappa had suggested that the former India captain’s “knees are getting worn out”.

Addressing the issue regarding Dhoni’s fitness, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has revealed that the veteran wicketkeeper-batter’s knees look fine. Irfan said that he met Dhoni a fews days ago and the former India captain was playing “pickleball”.

“Last year, Dhoni said he was giving a gift to his fans with his cricket. I met with him a few days ago, he was playing pickleball for two hours non-stop. His knee was fit as it ever was. It’s an exciting time for fans; he now has his vintage old look. Will we get the vintage old Dhoni too?,” he told Star Sports.

Addressing the rumours of Dhoni batting up the order, possibly opening the innings, Irfan suggested that the CSK captain would continue to bat down the order.

“His role has changed in the past two years. He comes in lower-order, plays lesser deliveries but hits the big shots, the strike rate is high. It’s a small innings but a memorable one. I think there won’t be much of a change in that this year. He will continue to play that role, and would want to contribute with his captaincy. But there won’t be complaints if he treats the fans with more,” Irfan explained.

The IPL 2024 opener between CSK and RCB will also mark the return of star batter Virat Kohli, who had pulled out of the England series due to personal reasons.

Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma welcome their second child, a baby boy last month.
