Moments after Rajasthan Royals sealed the final Indian Premier League playoffs berth with a convincing win over Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday (May24, 2026) night, head coach Kumar Sangakkara passionately defended captain Riyan Parag, insisting the young allrounder remains the “absolute right guy” to lead the franchise despite a turbulent IPL 2026 season.

Parag’s maiden full season as captain has been marked by inconsistent batting returns, recurring fitness concerns and off-field scrutiny, including repeated social media criticism following the vaping incident in the dressing room during a match. Yet, Sangakkara made it clear that the Royals management remains firmly invested in the 24-year-old.

“I have seen very few players who have been criticised like Riyan has been for about seven years now,” Sangakkara said. “Ever since I came to the franchise, there have always been people who liked Riyan, but there are a lot who didn’t really like him, especially on social media. But that’s the reality of the modern game.”

The former Sri Lankan captain revealed that Rajasthan never doubted Parag’s leadership credentials when handing him the captaincy before the season.

“When we decided to offer Riyan the captaincy, he was the absolute right guy to lead this franchise. I have no doubt in my mind,” Sangakkara said.

Despite battling physical niggles through parts of the campaign and enduring fluctuating form with the bat, Parag continued to front up for the Royals during their successful late push towards qualification. Sangakkara particularly praised the batter’s resilience and commitment.

“The confidence with which he drives himself, sometimes almost on one foot to come and play, there is a huge amount of positivity,” Sangakkara observed. “I think he has captained exceptionally well.”

Sangakkara also stressed that Parag commands complete respect inside the dressing room, irrespective of outside noise.

“Sometimes what you see on the outside is not Riyan Parag,” he said. “He is a lovely, soft, gentle, really determined, smart young man. He has learned a lot in the last few years and he will continue on that journey.”

It was a different ball game for singer Ed Sheeran. Literally! It seems Bengaluru kept the singer-songwriter really busy, with a new video showing him playing cricket with IPL team Rajasthan Royals’ stars Riyan Parag and Tushar Deshpande. Rajasthan Royals posted the video on its Instagram page on Tuesday morning. The video shows Sheeran, wearing a cricket jersey emblazoned with the number ‘23′ and the name ‘Warne’, in tribute to legendary Australian cricketer Shane Warne, Sheeran’s late friend. Walking onto the pitch, Sheeran says, “Let’s go play some cricket.” According to BookMyShow Live, which is producing the multi-city Mathematics India Tour of Sheeran with AEG Presents Asia, the friendly cricket match took place on Sunday at Brijesh Patel Cricket Academy in the city, ahead of his second concert in the city.

This happened right before he went viral for busking at Church Street.

Apparently, Sheeran, Parag, and Deshpande played a friendly game with a group of surprised young cricketers who were practising that day.

Although stunned at first, the kids quickly found themselves bowling, batting, and laughing alongside Sheeran, added BookMyShow sources.

The sources also revealed that the jersey Sheeran wore was a custom Rajasthan Royals jersey, designed as a tribute to Shane Warne, who left an indelible mark on both the sport and the Royals franchise.

Upon receiving the jersey, an elated Sheeran was heard saying, “Oh wow! With Shane on the back!” Sheeran’s next performance will be at JN Stadium (Polo Ground) in Shillong on February 12.

His final show in India this time will be at Leisure Valley Ground in Delhi NCR on February 15.

Riyan Parag has been declared fit to return for Assam in the seventh round of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, starting January 30. The 23-year-old will captain Assam in their final league match against Saurashtra in Rajkot. Parag’s last competitive appearance was in the third T20I against Bangladesh in Hyderabad in October 2024. Since then, he has been sidelined by a shoulder injury that required surgery, which ruled him out of the T20I series in South Africa, the ongoing series against England, and India’s Champions Trophy squad. However, his return to action could help him regain match fitness should India need him as a replacement in the near future.

Having played ten T20Is for India since his debut against Zimbabwe in July 2024, Parag is known for his explosive batting and handy quick-spin bowling. Before his injury, his all-round skills added valuable depth to India’s lineup.

In the previous Ranji Trophy season, Parag showcased his prowess with the bat, amassing 378 runs in six innings at an impressive average of 75.60 and a strike rate of 113.85. He was also the leading six-hitter of the season, smashing 20 maximums.

Assam, currently at the bottom of the Elite Group D table with no wins in six matches (two losses and four draws), will hope Parag’s return inspires a strong finish. While Assam is out of playoff contention, Saurashtra remains in the hunt for a knockout spot, making this clash crucial for the hosts.

Assam squad: Riyan Parag (capt), Denish Das (vice-capt), Mukhtar Hussain, Mrinmoy Dutta, Rahul Singh, Dipjyoti Saikia, Parvez Musaraf, Sumit Ghadigaonkar (wk), Rishav Das, Anurag Talukdar (wk), Avinav Choudhury, Sibsankar Roy, Akash Sengupta, Pradyun Saikia, Amlanjyoti Das.

The second T20I between India and Bangladesh saw a delivery by Riyan Parag being called a no-ball for a very rare reason. Bowling his very first over in the 11th over of the Bangladesh innings, Parag decided to switch things up on the fourth ball. Parag tried a bizarre sling action, somewhat similar to former India batter Kedar Jadhav‘s wide action. The trick backfired massively, as Parag ended up stepping outside the pitch tramlines, and rightly saw the ball signalled a no-ball.

Watch: Riyan Parag’s bizarre no ball

Why was it a no ball?

Law 21.5 of the rules of cricket set by England’s famous Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) mentions the following:

“The bowler’s back foot must land within and not touch the return crease, appertaining to his/her stated mode of delivery. – behind the popping crease. If the bowler’s end umpire is not satisfied that all of these three conditions have been met, he/she shall call and signal No ball.”

This means that the moment Parag’s back foot stepped beyond the white tramline to his left, it was going to be a no ball.

Not only did Parag’s foot land outside the tramline, it landed outside the pitch altogether.

The umpire required a couple of checks, but ultimately confirmed it as a no-ball.

Riyan Parag’s comeback

Parag returned to his normal action in the very next delivery, the freehit, and prevented Mahmudullah from scoring any extra runs. Just two balls later, Mehidy Hasan Miraz tried to slog Riyan Parag over long-off, and got caught in the deep by substitute fielder Ravi Bishnoi.

Parag also played a cameo at the end of the Indian batting innings. He faced just six balls, but scored 15 runs, hitting two sixes. His little knock helped India add some more runs towards the end, as India piled on 221 in 20 overs against a hapless Bangladesh bowling.

India A batter Riyan Parag had another poor outing with the bat in the ongoing Duleep Trophy, this time during the second round match against India D in Anantpur. After scoring 37 off just 29 balls in the first innings, Parag failed to convert a good start in the second innings, perishing to Saurab Kumar for 20 off 31 balls. He came out to bat with a positive intent smashing two sixes. However, his knock was cut shot due to a poor choice of shot on the final ball of the 69th over.

Parag miscued a shot as the ball hit the toe-end of the bat, and substitute fielder Aditya Thakare took a brilliant catch to end the former’s stay in the middle.

Parag’s flop show, however, sparked a huge debate on social media, with fans complaining that the youngster doesn’t know how to convert his starts into a big knock.

Here’s how internet reacted:

Meanwhile, Pratham Singh and Tilak Varma notched up their respective centuries while sharing a 104-run stand for the second wicket to put India A in command against India D on day three.

On a day dominated by the batters, efforts of Pratham (122 off 189 balls) and Tilak (111* off 193 balls) along with Shashwat Rawat‘s 64 off 88 balls and captain Mayank Agarwal‘s 56 on day two helped India A declare their innings at 380/3 in 98 overs, setting India D a huge target of 489.

At stumps, India D reached 62/1 in 19 overs, and need 426 more runs to register an improbable win. Ricky Bhui (44*) and Yash Dubey (15*) steadied the ship for India D till stumps arrived after the early loss of Atharva Taide, who was dismissed by Khaleel Ahmed for the second time in this match.
