Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH’s) Ishan Kishan on Friday (May 22, 2026) credited his shot selection to his maturity as a player, as the India wicketkeeper-batter smashed his sixth half-century in the Indian Premier League. Kishan hit 79 off 46 balls with eight fours and three sixes to power SRH to 255 for four, after which Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) responded with 200 for four to go down by 55 runs.

“Just happy about it, taking one match at a time, not making it complicated for myself, just keeping it simple like I spoke earlier before the tournament. It’s just about watching the ball and playing your game,” Kishan told the broadcaster after the match.

“More than maturity, it’s about shot selection. You (should) know when to play which shot, (and) who to target. I’m just trying to take one ball at a time, know the situation, understand the pitch and just play your shots,” he said.

Kishan continued, “I just take one match at a time, but I don’t know why but I do feel confident when I’m playing against them and (at the) end of the day, fortune favours the brave and I just try to do my thing and it works in my way.” Kishan, who also brought up his 500 runs in this IPL on Friday (May 22, 2026), said keeping it simple was also crucial for SRH who have finished third in the points table after their 14 matches in the group stage.

“Pat (Cummins) coming in, one of the best bowlers, it’s very good to have him. Credit goes to everyone for keeping us in the zone. you just keep it simple, it’s about enjoying in the middle. I need to give the credit to the support staff and Pat Cummins,” he said. SRH skipper Cummins expressed his delight in having a strong bowling attack after Eshan Malinga (2/33) and Sakib Hussain (1/31) stifled the RCB batters. “The boys batted fantastically. Pretty good wicket, knew a lot of things had to go our way. We threw a few things at them, it’s still a big win,” he said.

“The way Eshan has bowled all through the tournament, Sakib there as well, captain’s dream. We’ll rest for a couple of days. We’ll know who we’re playing in a couple of days.” RCB captain Rajat Patidar said the priority of his team, which finished on the first spot followed by Gujarat Titans on second, was to remain at the top of the points table.

“The top priority was to be on the top, but I think, there were a lot of runs in the first innings. I think 255 is a good score on this wicket,” Patidar said. “Their five bowlers executed the slow bouncers and yorkers pretty well. Obviously, Hyderabad, I think it’s a good wicket, but when you start bowling slow bouncers, slow into the wicket, it’s really tough for the batsman to score the runs,” he added.

Patidar also credited SRH batters for making the most of the home advantage in the first half of the game, while saying the pitch did not slow down in the second innings. “Their top five batsmen played really well, and they purely dominated in the first innings. Not really, but the slow bouncer was gripping a bit, but I think the way… their strength is slow bouncers and yorkers, they executed pretty well,” he said.

Nearly two months ago, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad kicked off this IPL season carrying expectation and different kinds of pressure. RCB arrived as the defending champion while SRH sought to turn promise into authority.

The sides meet again on Friday (May 22, 2026) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, this time in the business end of the tournament. Royal Challengers, moving with ruthless efficiency, are close to sealing top spot, with Sunrisers hoping to break into the top two.

SRH will challenge the visitor with a vastly different bowling attack from their previous meeting, when Jaydev Unadkat and Harshal Patel led the unit in captain Pat Cummins’ absence. Eshan Malinga has emerged as Sunrisers’ talisman with 17 wickets, while Sakib Hussain (14) and Praful Hinge (11) have offered strong support.

Since returning to action, Cummins has added pace and intensity to the bowling pack, taking eight wickets in six appearances. This will be SRH’s first line of attack against a team that hardly appears to be vulnerable.

RCB, too, boasts a formidable bowling unit led by former SRH medium-pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has claimed 24 wickets in 13 matches. He has been ably backed by Josh Hazlewood (12), Rasikh Salam (12), and Krunal Pandya (10).

With the bat, Virat Kohli has led the charge with 542 runs in 13 matches. Devdutt Padikkal (412) and skipper Rajat Patidar (337) have also played key roles, with Tim David and Romario Shepherd providing firepower down the order.

For SRH, the openers’ contributions remain crucial, but Heinrich Klaasen has been the standout batter with 555 runs in 13 games. Abhishek Sharma (507) and Ishan Kishan (490) have been influential, while Travis Head (367), despite having a quieter season, remains capable of turning a match on its head.

If the first fixture set the tone for IPL 2026, this clash could deliver the perfect crescendo before the playoffs.

High-octane cricket returned to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium with a bang as Royal Challengers Bengaluru outclassed Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets in the IPL 2026 season opener here on Saturday.

Follow the IPL 2026 RCB vs SRH highlights

It was a festive occasion at the iconic venue, which hosted its first top-level outing since the deadly stampede last year.

The packed house revelled on an entertaining night, one where RCB poster boy Virat Kohli (69 n.o., 38b, 5×4, 5×6), hometown hero Devdutt Padikkal (61, 26b, 7×4, 4×6) and captain Rajat Patidar (31, 12b, 2×4, 3×6) were in their element.

The trio’s fireworks took RCB to the 202-run target with 4.2 overs to spare. Padikkal gave the home team a flying start, ensuring that Phil Salt’s early dismissal made no dent.

Kohli was all class when a straight bat sent an over-pitched delivery from pacer Eshan Malinga to the sight screen.

Later, the 37-year-old produced a stunning shot when he whipped a length ball from Harshal Patel deep into the square-leg stands.

Sparkling cameo

Patidar kept the tempo up with a brief, explosive knock. There was a stutter when Patidar and Jitesh Sharma fell off successive balls, but there was no stopping RCB.

The SRH bowlers were much too full on a surface with spongy bounce.

After being put in, Ishan Kishan (80, 38b, 8×4, 5×6) and Aniket Verma (43, 18b, 3×4, 4×6) landed the big blows to push SRH beyond 200.

Kishan and Aniket were the only visiting batters who were able to connect sweetly. RCB fast bowler Jacob Duffy, who made his IPL debut, read the conditions well, banging in the short balls to great effect.

The batters rushed into the shot and mistimed it, handing the Kiwi three crucial top-order wickets.

Stand-in skipper Kishan got going with a back-foot punch, and kept up the attacking instinct despite the loss of wickets.

Heinrich Klaasen (31, 22b, 2×4, 1×6) and Kishan put on a rollicking fourth-wicket alliance before Salt took a good catch at deep mid-wicket while staying just inside the boundary rope to cut short the South African batter’s stay.

Salt was back in action a couple of overs later, pulling off a one-handed stunner to dismiss Kishan.

Aniket provided the spark at the end, only to be outshone by the RCB batters.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), which is having one of its more fruitful seasons in the cash-rich domestic league with five wins from eight matches, entered the IPL record books for the most number of sixes hit in a single season, at 100. The feat was achieved during the clash with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on April 25.

Though the Sunrisers went down to Bengaluru on April 25, tasting only their third defeat this IPL season, they posted the unique record for clearing the fence the most times in a single season. The Sunrisers have lit up the ongoing 17th season of the gilded, cash-rich domestic T20 league with their batting fireworks, with the likes of Aussie dasher Travis Head and his opening partner Abhishek Sharma, and Heinrich Klaasen, who has emerged as the team’s middle-order bulwark this season, flattening rival attacks with their ferocious assaults. The Hyderabad-based franchise achieved the landmark of striking 100 sixes in just their eighth match in the ongoing IPL season.Even in the 2022 season, the Sunrisers raised hopes of achieving the landmark but fell agonisingly short at 97 sixes.

Earlier, on April 25, the RCB won the toss and elected to bat first. Skipper Faf Du Plessis (25) and Virat Kohli got the team off to a blazing start in the powerplay. After a slowdown in scoring post-powerplay, Rajat Patidar (50) injected fresh impetus into the RCB’s innings.Virat was dismissed for 51 in 43 balls, with four boundaries and a six, failing to capitalise on his fine start during the powerplay. Despite some quick wickets, cameos from Cameron Green (37*) and Swapnil Singh (12*) took RCB to 206/7 in their 20 overs. Jaydev Unadkat (3/30) and T Natrajan (2/39) were the top bowlers for SRH.

Pat Cummins and Mayank Markande took a wicket each. In the run-chase, SRH kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Except for Abhishek Sharma (31), none of the previous heroes for SRH, be it Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, or Nitish Reddy made an impact. Skipper Cummins (31) and Shahbaz Ahmed (40) did put up a fight, but SRH was skittled out for 171 in their 20 overs. Green (2/12) and Karn Sharma (2/29) were the top bowlers for RCB. Swapnil Singh also took two wickets for 40 runs. Will Jacks and Yash Dayal also got a wicket each. RCB is at the bottom of the points table with two wins, seven losses and four points. SRH is at the third spot with five wins, three losses and 10 points.

Travis Head’s destructive hundred fused splendidly with skipper Pat Cummins’ resolve as Sunrisers Hyderabad registered a well-crafted 25-run victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a high-scoring affair here on Monday.

Head’s maiden T20 hundred (102, 41b, 9×4, 8×6) and Heinrich Klaasen’s pillaging 67 (31b, 2×4, 7×6) drove Sunrisers to a record-breaking 287 for three, also going past their own 277/3 against Mumbai Indians at Hyderabad this March 27.

The visiting bowlers led by Cummins (3/43) showed superb skill level on a barren pitch, something their counterparts lacked, to restrict RCB to 262 for seven. This IPL match also witnessed the highest cumulative runs scored –549 in any single T20 match.

Skipper Faf du Plessis (62, 28b, 7×4, 4×6) and the super-improvising Dinesh Karthik (83, 35b, 5×4, 7×6) played fine hands but on the night they ended as mere footnotes.

However, RCB began their chase of 288 with gusto with Du Plessis and Virat Kohli (42, 20b, 6×4, 2×6) making 50 in just 3.5 overs, bettering SRH’s timing for their 50 in 4.3 overs.

The Faf-Kohli pair reached 79 in the Power Play overs and 80 in 6.2 overs but the introduction of leg-spinner Mayank Markande changed the complexion of the game.

Kohli’s attempt to slog sweep Markande saw the ball sneaking under his bat to rattle the stumps. From that point, the Royal Challengers lost four wickets in the span of 41 runs to slip to 121 for four that also saw a steep climb in the asking rate.

The fourth wicket to fall during that phase was that of Du Plessis. The South African batter smashed Cummins for a four and six in successive balls but feathered a well-directed slower bouncer to Klaasen behind the stumps.

In the same over, the Aussie pacer also trapped Saurav Chauhan in front of the wicket for a naught.

Karthik and Mahipal Lomror (19), who together punished Markande for 25 runs in his last over, milked 59 runs off 29 balls for the sixth wicket, and the former also made 63 for the seventh wicket with Anuj Rawat as RCB moved along briskly.

But in the end, it was sufficient only to provide some artificial excitement to the full house.

Earlier, Head’s destructive hundred was the driving force behind Hyderabad’s imposing total.

The South Australian added 108 runs off 49 balls with his opening partner Abhishek Sharma (34, 22b) and 57 off 26 balls with Klaasen for the second wicket as the hosts’ bowlers wilted under sustained firing.

Head’s batting does not carry the traditional elegance of a left-hander but he more than compensates it with effectiveness.

His innings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium was a telltale example of the simple principles he follows in batting — anything in his hitting arc will disappear far and wide.

The 30-year-old displayed that chilling efficiency against RCB pacers Reece Topley and debutant Lockie Ferguson, who walked in for out-of-form of Glenn Maxwell.

But Ferguson’s first over was an eminently forgettable one, conceding 18 runs. The Kiwi pacer slanted one to Head’s pads and it was flicked over square leg for a six.

Ferguson tried for course correction in the next ball, going a wee bit short.

But Head was up for the challenge, hoisting the ball over mid-on for a massive maximum.

In between, Abhishek, who also played a couple of fine shots, fell to Topley, an uppish flick snaffled by Ferguson at square leg.

But that brought together Head and Klaasen together as RCB were put under the cosh further by SRH’s second-wicket pair.

Head soon fetched his hundred with a brutally-driven boundary off pacer Vysakh Vijayakumar.

However, he perished soon as a mistimed slice off Ferguson was taken by Du Plessis at mid-off.

But the dismissal did not slow down Hyderabad as Klaasen assumed the role of battering ram, bringing up his fifty in just 23 balls.

As is his wont, the South African was severe on spinners and clobbered the part-time left-arm spin of Mahipal Lomror for 18 runs in his only over.

SRH soon went past their own record score of 277 despite Klaasen getting dismissed by Ferguson.

The landmark moment came when Aiden Markram (32, 17b) took a single off Vysakh to long-off.

Markram also added 56 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket alliance with Abdul Samad (37, 10b, 4×4, 3×6) as Hyderabad also smoked 22 sixes, the highest in an IPL innings.
