Indian cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Shami was a standout performer in the 2019 ODI World Cup but he was not included in the playing XI for the semifinal clash against New Zealand. Shami took 14 wickets in 4 matches at an impressive economy rate of 5.48. The performances included a five-wicket haul against England and a hat-trick against Afghanistan. However, when it came to the semifinal match, Shami was snubbed and India went on to lose the game by 18 runs to crash out of the competition. During a recent interaction on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube channel, Shami opened up about his disappointment and even had a question for then captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri.

“In 2019 I did not play the first 4-5 games. In the next game, I took a hat-trick, then picked up a five-wicket haul and then four wickets in the next game. A similar happened in 2023. I did not play in the first few games and then picked a fifer, then four wickets and then a five-wicket haul again,” he said.

“The one thing I keep wondering is every team needs players who can perform well. I took 13 wickets in three matches. What more do you expect from me? I neither have questions nor do I have answers. I can only prove myself when I get the opportunity. You gave me a chance, and I took 13 wickets in three matches. Then we lost to New Zealand. Played four matches overall and picked 14 wickets. In 2023, I picked 24 wickets in seven matches,” Shami added.

Shami was India’s top wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup 2024 where he impressed everyone with his bowling and went on to take 24 wickets including three five-wicket hauls. The fast bowler is currently recovering after undergoing surgeries and there has been no official confirmation on his return.

‘In Pain’ Kapil Dev Writes To BCCI, Ready To Donate Pension For Ailing Anshuman Gaekwad https://artifex.news/in-pain-kapil-dev-writes-to-bcci-ready-to-donate-pension-for-ailing-anshuman-gaekwad-6096083/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 06:45:08 +0000 https://artifex.news/in-pain-kapil-dev-writes-to-bcci-ready-to-donate-pension-for-ailing-anshuman-gaekwad-6096083/ Read More “‘In Pain’ Kapil Dev Writes To BCCI, Ready To Donate Pension For Ailing Anshuman Gaekwad” »

India’s World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to lend financial support to former teammate Anshuman Gaekwad, who is battling blood cancer. Gaekwad, 71, has been undergoing treatment for the past year at King’s College Hospital in London. Kapil revealed that his former teammates such as Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri and Kirti Azad are doing their best to generate funds for Gaikwad’s treatment.

Kapil said he is confident that the BCCI will look into the matter and provide financial assistance to the former India head coach Gaekwad.

“It is a sad and very depressing. I am in pain because I have played alongside Anshu and can’t bear to see him in this state. No one should suffer. I know the Board will take care of him. We are not compelling anyone. Any help for Anshu will have to come from your heart. He took blows on his face and chest when standing up to some of the ferocious fast bowlers. Now is the time for us to stand up for him. I am sure our cricket fans will not fail him. They should pray for his recovery,” Kapil Dev told Sportstar.

The legendary all-rounder, however, rued the lack of a system where former players are assisted in cases like Anshuman’s. Kapil also insisted that he is ready to give up his pension if the situation doesn’t improve.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have a system. It is great to see this generation of players make good money. It is good to see the support staff members also being paid well. In our time, the Board did not have the money. Today, it has and should take care of the senior players from the past. But where do they send their contributions? If a Trust is formed, they can put their money there. But we don’t have a system. There should be a Trust. I think BCCI can do that. They do look after the players, former and present. We are ready to contribute by donating our pension amount if the family allows us to,” he added.

Gaekwad’s cricketing legacy is notable. He played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India between 1975 and 1987, and later served as India’s head coach in two separate stints.

It’s been more than a week since India defeated England in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup in Guyana, avenging their 10-wicket defeat to the same side two years back at the same stage. The Rohit Sharma-led side also defeated South Africa last Saturday to clinch the T20 World Cup title in Barbados. Following Afghanistan’s crushing loss to South Africa in the other semi-final, former England captain Michael Vaughan had accused the organisers for favouring India, questioning the scheduling of the tournament.

Vaughan took to social media to highlight that the Afghanistan players had faced a flight delay while travelling to Trinidad, having played their final Super Eight match of the tournament a day prior.

He also lashed out at the ICC for disrespecting Afghanistan, while also putting the blame on the alleged India-centric scheduling.

“So Afghanistan qualified for the WC semi, winning in St Vincent on Monday night .. 4 hr flight delay on Tues to Trinidad so no time to practice or get accustomed to a new venue .. utter lack of respect to players, i am afraid,” Vaughan had written in a post.

Now, former India head coach Ravi Shastri has given a befitting reply to Vaughan over his allegations of the tournament being rigged for India, as far as the scheduling is concerned.

During a recent interaction, Shastri took a jibe Vaughan, questioning if his “colleague” ever lifted a World Cup trophy.

“Michael Vaughan can say what he wants. Nobody in India cares. Let him sort out the England team first. He should give advice on what happened to the England team in the semifinal. India are used to lifting Cups. I know England have won twice, but India have won four times. I don’t think Michael’s lifted a Cup ever. So think twice. He is a colleague of mine, but that’s my answer to him,” Shastri told Times Now.

Speaking on Suryakumar’s much-debated catch in the final, Shastri silenced the haters, saying: “Sour grapes. And go and check the record books after five years. The name India will be engraved on it.”

Virat Kohli‘s continued poor form in the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup has brought in opinions from several cricketers, experts and fans alike. However, few people have seen Kohli’s game from up close better than former India coach Ravi Shastri. Shastri and Kohli shared a great bond as coach and captain of Team India in all formats. After Kohli’s failure against England in the semi-final, Shastri said that he should stick to his natural game without trying to be overly aggressive.

“This is not his game. He’s going too early for it, especially with Rohit Sharma playing aggressively at the other end,” opined Shastri, speaking on Star Sports.

“He is more orthodox, but he can make up quite easily if he spends more time at the crease,” said Shastri.

Against England, Kohli had hit a six off Reece Topley in the third over. However, just two balls later, Kohli had to walk back to the dugout as he misjudged the ball while trying to play big towards mid-wicket.

“When he tries to get out of his zone, he will get out in that fashion,” Shastri said.

“He has tried to manufacture shots that are not there. You should do that when you’re in top form, when you’ve got 300 runs in the competition. When you’re looking to break free when the runs are not there, it’s not easy. The key word is rhythm,” Shastri added.

Despite Kohli’s failure with the bat, his opening partner Rohit Sharma scored a brilliant 39-ball 57. Along with Suryakumar Yadav‘s 47 off 36 balls and handy cameos at the back end, India posted 171 in 20 overs on a tricky, wet Guyana pitch.

“I think Kohli should’ve played like Kohli has done for a decade,” said former English cricketer Nasser Hussain.

Having made just 75 runs in seven innings so far, Kohli will be aiming for a royal finish to the 2024 T20 World Cup with a big score in the final against South Africa, in Barbados on June 29.

Legendary South Africa cricketer Jonty Rhodes is being considered as Indian cricket team’s next fielding coach, according to a report by Revsportz. Rhodes came to limelight during his playing career for his exemplary fielding skills and catching prowess is still considered as one of the best in the history of the sport. The report claimed that no formal approach has been made to Rhodes regarding the role but his name has been doing the rounds. The BCCI is already in the process to finalising India’s next head coach as Rahul Dravid‘s tenure will come to an end after the T20 World Cup 2024. While nothing official has been announced, former India batter Gautam Gambhir has emerged as the favourite for the role.

According to media reports, Rhodes previously applied for the position back in 2019 but BCCI decided to retain R Sridhar. The support staff is mainly picked by the head coach and Ravi Shastri decided to go with Sridhar as the fielding coach and Bharat Arun as the bowling coach of the Indian cricket team.

Meanwhile, another report claimed that Gambhir is all set to the next India head coach after he agreed to BCCI’s offer. Gambhir reportedly had certain demands before agreeing to the offer but the report stated that the management has given the green light and the announcement will be made in the coming days.

“We have held talks with Gambhir to become the head coach of the Indian team. He will replace the outgoing Rahul Dravid after the T20 World Cup,” a BCCI source told Dainik Bhaskar.

Currently, Paras Mhambrey and T Dilip are the bowling and fielding coach, respectively.

The report said that Gambhir is expected to bring his own support staff and his appointment can also lead to certain changes in the team as he is a believer of picking players for specific formats.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri dropped a massive hint on a possible stint in a managerial position in the cash-rich Indian Premier League. Shastri is well remembered for the impact he made as the head coach of the Indian men’s team from 2017 to 2021. Under Shastri’s reign, the Indian team added a feather in their cap with back-to-back Test series triumphs against Australia. “Toota hai Gabba ka ghamand” became famous after India defeated Australia at their fortress The Gabba in 2021.

Shastri was in the dressing room witnessing history. There has always been excitement among fans to see Shastri in a possible head coach role in the IPL.

“Not really. Not after doing India for 7 years. You never know what can come up in the future and how involved you might want to get,” Shastri said when asked about coaching in IPL on Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube channel.

After his stint with the Men in Blue ended in 2021, Shastri returned to his life as a broadcaster. He is currently the voice in the commentary panel for the ongoing edition of the IPL 2024. His dynamic voice and his style of introducing teams during the toss have left an impression across various matches.

“You know, there is no doubting the experience you have and what you can bring to the table, but after 7 years with the Indian team, especially those times when you were there, the toughest time that game has seen since the World War II, during Covid, quarantine and the bubbles, you just wanted ta break from the dugout, the dressing room and everything. The broadcasting and the mic gave me the freedom to express myself again. And have some fun,” Shastri added.

Shastri didn’t completely rule out the possibility of once again turning his career into a managerial role. But his focus would be to contribute to the sport by identifying and grooming young talent.

“You don’t rule that out. Once you have been involved with the game and played the game and you wanted to contribute to the youth, then that will always linger in your mind. It’s not just the money part of it, but also the contributing factor. How you can get into the heads of the young kids and pass on the knowledge you have before you forget it yourself?” Shastri said.

“If I ever go there, it will be precisely for that reason. Not to see the superstars carrying on the way they are, but to cultivate, identify and groom talent, and take them through the roof. I will enjoy it because the spread is so much these days, they have complexes, they have language barriers and challenges culturally. And then get them together to play fearless cricket and ruthless cricket is my cup of tea. So never discount that, it would always be the case when you are handling youngsters,” he added.

“It Has Made A Big Difference”: Ravi Shastri Backs Impact Player Rule https://artifex.news/it-has-made-big-difference-ravi-shastri-backs-impact-player-rule-5659422/ Tue, 14 May 2024 08:16:41 +0000 https://artifex.news/it-has-made-big-difference-ravi-shastri-backs-impact-player-rule-5659422/ Read More ““It Has Made A Big Difference”: Ravi Shastri Backs Impact Player Rule” »

]]>

Former India coach Ravi Shastri supported the Impact Player rule in the IPL, citing how it has led to exciting endings. However, several current players and coaches disagree. The Impact Player rule has been a hot topic of debate during the IPL 2024 and Shastri said the rule has contributed to many compelling finishes in the ongoing IPL edition. The rule allows a particular team to introduce a 12th player to the team from a list in which the five names are given at the time of a toss. A team can bring in a player for the playing XI by replacing any player the team wants, depending on the situation.

“The Impact Player [rule] is good. You have to evolve with the times. You know, it happens in other sports as well. It’s got tighter finishes. You have to evolve with the times and I think it’s a good rule. You saw the number of tight finishes we had in last year’s IPL. So, you know, it has made a big difference,” Shastri told Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube channel.

“You know when any new rule comes in, there will be…people will try and justify why that’s not right. But in time when you see the scores – 200 and 190 – and then like you mentioned individuals grabbing that opportunity and making the most of it, people will start re-looking at how they think about it,” Shastri said.

Meanwhile, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah refused to commit to the continuation of the Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL), saying it would be decided after consulting with captains and coaches.

However, he emphasised the importance of the rule, which permits two additional Indian players to be included in an IPL team’s XI. The Impact Player rule has been a hot topic of debate during the IPL 2024 and the BCCI Secretary said that the rule is not “permanent.”

“Impact Player is like a test case. We have implemented it slowly. The biggest advantage of it is that two Indian players are getting a chance [in each game], which is the most important. We will consult with the players, franchises, broadcasters [and take a call]. This is not permanent [but] I am not saying that it will go,” Shah told reporters at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.

The Impact Player rule has been cited as one of the primary causes for the enormous scores recorded in the IPL 2024. India captain Rohit Sharma was the first high-profile player to criticise the rule, stating that the rule has hampered the development of all-rounders in the country.

“I genuinely feel it is going to hold back the development of all-rounders because eventually cricket is played by 11 players, not 12. So I am not a big fan of the Impact Player Rule because you are taking so much from the game just to make it a little more entertaining for the people around you,” Rohit said.

However, DC head coach Ricky Ponting stated that he was fine with the IPL retaining the Impact Player provided it made the competition a “better spectacle”. However, as a coach, he confessed that he didn’t like the rule and called it a “nightmare”.

On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) fast bowler Mitchell Starc also stated that the Impact Player rule had contributed to bowlers’ poor performance in the ongoing IPL 2024 season.

“The Impact Player rule changes things a fair bit. Everyone gets to bat a lot deeper having a batting and a bowling XI. There’s a lot made of that rule throughout the tournament and there’s been a lot of high scores, which is the nature of the wickets and the grounds we play on here. When you have batters and batting allrounders come in at Nos. 8 or 9, it’s a long batting line-up,” Starc, who has conceded runs at 11.37 so far, had said.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri feels Shubman Gill‘s omission from the T20 World Cup squad must’ve been a tough pill to swallow for the youngster, but added that the early setback will only give him the motivation to get better. Gill did not find a place in the 15-man squad which was announced on April 30. He, however, will travel with the squad as one of the four back up players for the event kicking off on June 2.

The BCCI selection committee, led by former India pacer Ajit Agarkar, snubbed Gill amid his slow start to the IPL season. The selectors instead picked Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal in the squad.

On Friday, Gill regain his magical touch, scoring a match-winning century against CSK at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Gill, who scored 104 off just 55 balls, put on a record opening stand with Sai Sudharsan, who all smashed 103 off just 51 balls.

While on commentary, Shastri suggsted Gill would walk into any team of the world but in India he could not find a place for the T20 World Cup.

“He (Gill) would be hurting. He should be hurting. He should look at it positively and try to get better. A player of his calibre would walk into any side, but such is the talent in India that he doesn’t get a place,” Shastri was heard as saying on commentary when Gill was batting.

“His class will continue to grow. He might not be in the World Cup side but he will take it in his stride. That will help him become a better player. He’ll go from strength to strength,” the former India head coach added.

Against CSK, Gill made his intentions clear from the opening over by square-driving and lofting Mitchell Santer for four and six respectively in the opening over.

He  got his fifty in just 25 balls by heaving Simarjeet Singh for a six. He then got to his hundred off 50 balls with a four past square leg off.

For the unversed, Gill is making his captaincy debut in IPL after Hardik Pandya‘s departure to Mumbai Indians.
