Lisandro Martinez stunned Anfield by handing Manchester United a surprise lead, but Liverpool equalised soon after through Cody Gakpo. The lead came just 10 minutes later, as Mohamed Salah scored from a penalty. But United pulled it back, with Amad Diallo equalising with 10 minutes to go. (MATCH CENTER)

Rasmus Hojlund fired Manchester United to a late 2-1 win at Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday, while Tottenham were held to a stalemate at Rangers. Ruben Amorim‘s United side came from behind to best the Czech side thanks to a second-half brace by Danish striker Hojlund, they now sit seventh in the league phase standings. “The win is important at the moment and it’s good to prepare for the next game,” United manager Amorim told TNT Sports.

A top-eight finish will see United qualify automatically for the round of 16, while finishing ninth to 24th will earn them a play-off tie to reach that stage.

Matej Vydra opened the scoring three minutes after half-time to stun United, before substitute Hojlund scored twice in the last half-hour to seize a vital three points for the English club.

The winner came two minutes from time when Bruno Fernandes cleverly slipped a free-kick into the 21-year-old’s feet and he held off a defender before slipping home.

Elsewhere in the Europa League, Spurs drew 1-1 with Rangers in Glasgow.

The hosts sit in the final automatic qualification spot with Spurs one place below them, but both level on 11 points.

“We took the challenge with both hands, grabbed it and showed what we wanted them to show,” said Rangers manager Philippe Clement.

“We deserved to win the game, but I think it was a very good advertisement for Scottish football to compete with a Premier League team at full strength.”

A draw somewhat eases the pressure on Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, after his side went into the match with just one win in their last seven outings in all competitions.

Rangers took the lead two minutes after the interval when Moroccan striker Hamza Igamane continued his fine start to life in Glasgow by netting his fourth goal in as many European outings this season.

Captain James Tavernier bent an excellent inswinging pass from the right flank beyond the Spurs defence and into the path of Igamane who finished unerringly at the far post.

Substitutes Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski combined to bring the English side level with a quarter of an hour remaining, the Swede wrong-footing the goalkeeper with a cool finish from just inside the box.

Fraser Forster made a vital save from Cyriel Dessers to keep Spurs level in the last 10 minutes, and moments later the Rangers striker had a goal disallowed for offside.

“(It was) a great save by Fraser at the end. It’s an important point,” said Postecoglou.

Lazio top the standings with 16 points — joint with Athletic Bilbao — after beating Ajax 3-1 in Amsterdam to book their spot in the knock-out stages.

Lyon beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 to move up to fourth — one place above the in-form Bundesliga club.

Anderlecht overcame Slavia Prague 2-1 in the Czech capital to jump to third in the standings.

‘Solid performance’

A much-changed Chelsea side beat Astana 3-1 in the Conference League to guarantee a top-eight finish in the league phase — ensuring automatic qualification to the round of 16.

“It was a solid performance. We knew it was quite cold. We tried to adapt quickly. The players did fantastically with the weather conditions and the long journey yesterday,” said Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea sit top of the standings on 15 points after five matches, two ahead of Vitoria Guimaraes who won 4-1 at Swiss side St Gallen.

Chelsea wrapped up the points in the first half through goals from Marc Guiu and Renato Veiga.

Marin Tomasov pulled one back for the hosts on the stroke of half-time but Maresca’s side rarely looked troubled in the second half as they closed out the win.

Spanish teenager Guiu gave Chelsea the perfect start by netting a brace inside the opening 20 minutes, bringing his tally in Europe to three goals in five appearances this season.

Last season’s defeated finalists Fiorentina won 7-0 at home to Austria’s LASK Linz as they ensured progression to the knockout stages.

Manchester United took under 60 seconds for them to break the deadlock against Bodo/Glimt.© AFP

Manchester United marked Ruben Amorim‘s first game at Old Trafford with a 3-2 Europa League victory over Bodo/Glimt as Rasmus Hojlund netted a double, while Tottenham were held by Roma on Thursday. United trailed late in the first half against Norwegians Bodo/Glimt, but recovered to post a second straight Europa League win since sacking Erik ten Hag, having started the campaign with three consecutive draws. “Half of the stadium doesn’t know me, I came from Portugal and I did nothing for this club. Yet the way they make me feel at home is special,” Amorim told TNT Sports.

Manchester United scored in the second minute of former Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim’s first match as manager at Ipswich on Sunday and it took under 60 seconds for them to break the deadlock against Bodo/Glimt.

Visiting goalkeeper Nikita Haikin was put under pressure by a poor back-pass and his clearance was blocked by Hojlund, allowing Alejandro Garnacho to tap into an empty net.

But United’s defensive frailties were laid bare as Hakon Evjen swept in a 19th-minute equaliser and Philip Zinckernagel put Bodo/Glimt in front four minutes later.

United looked short of ideas until the stroke of half-time when Noussair Mazraoui’s cross found Hojlund, who flicked the ball up with a clever touch and calmly volleyed into the bottom corner.

The hosts reclaimed the lead less than five minutes after the restart, as Manuel Ugarte squared the ball across the face of goal for Hojlund to prod home.

United survived a real scare when the referee waved play on after goalkeeper Andre Onana handled outside his area in the second half.

But Amorim’s men held on to give their new boss a satisfactory home debut.

Erik ten Hag expects to be boosted by the return of Rasmus Hojlund, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka for Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool. Injury-hit United have endured a poor season and need to overcome Jurgen Klopp’s side at Old Trafford on Sunday to keep their hopes of silverware alive. United enter the showdown with their bitter rivals as underdogs, but right-back Wan-Bissaka should return after two months out, with England defender Maguire and Denmark striker Hojlund also set to feature. “We had a good week. Today we had a session and they were all training,” Ten Hag said at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

“I think (they are available). We have tomorrow one session. Of course, we have to see how they recover from this but it looks good.”

Ten Hag also gave a positive update on United midfielder Mason Mount, who has been kept out for four months with a calf issue.

“It was very good Mason Mount trained also the whole week with us,” he said. “First part of the week also partly, but then also he had some full sessions with us, so it’s looking good.”

Lisandro Martinez, Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia remain sidelined, while United confirmed Jonny Evans has been “nursing a minor issue for the past few matches”.

The club said “his game-time has been carefully managed” and he has not been included in Northern Ireland’s squad for their March internationals.

Defeat on Sunday would increase the pressure on Ten Hag as speculation mounts over his future at Old Trafford following the recent arrival at the club of co-owner Jim Ratcliffe.

The Dutchman said his players should take confidence from their good run in the early weeks of 2024 despite the daunting task of taking on in-form Liverpool.

“I think the players, the team showed lately from January on we are in a very good series of games with a lot of wins, so they have to believe they can do it,” he said.

“Now we have to take the momentum. That is also what I feel when I train with them, during and around the games, that they have that belief, a good confidence, good spirit is there in the team.”

Ten Hag dismissed reports of a potential move for Marcus Rashford to Paris Saint-Germain.

The England forward has suffered a dramatic drop in form this season — managing just seven goals for United so far compared with 30 during the 2022/23 campaign.

But Ten Hag said: “We didn’t re-sign him last season for four years with the intention to sell him, no. He should be part of this project, so that is not a subject we talk about.”

Raphael Varane has been ruled out for “a few weeks” as Manchester United’s injury issues pile up ahead of their Premier League trip to Arsenal. Erik ten Hag’s side head to north London on Sunday without several players for their final match before the international break. Luke Shaw and Mason Mount are currently out of action, while new signing Rasmus Hojlund is yet to make his debut due to a back complaint.

Tyrell Malacia, Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo and Tom Heaton have missed the start of the campaign and now experienced French defender Varane faces a spell on the sidelines.

“Raphael Varane will be missing from the team when Manchester United face Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday due to injury,” the club said in a  statement on Wednesday.

“The France international came off at half-time in our 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Saturday due to the complaint, which is expected to keep him out for a few weeks.”

The 30-year-old has dealt with a number of injuries since moving to Old Trafford in 2021 and, having retired from the France set-up in February, will have the international break to work towards his return.

Manchester United are eighth in the Premier League table after two wins and a defeat in their opening three matches.
