FC Barcelona staged a sensational comeback against Portuguese giants Benfica to secure direct qualification to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. 2-4 down in the 75th minute, Barcelona scored three goals in the final 20 minutes of the game to complete a remarkable turnaround. In-form Brazilian winger Raphinha starred once again, scoring twice, including a dramatic 96th-minute winner, while Robert Lewandowksi also bagged a brace. The win puts Hansi Flick’s men in second spot in the Champions League table.

Barcelona started on a terrible note, conceding a second minute goal, as Benfica’s Greek striker Vangelis Pavlidis struck.

While Lewandowski did equalise from the penalty spot 10 minutes later, fortunes got worse for Barcelona in the rest of the first half.

Pavlidis took advantage from an error by Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to score into an empty net and make it 2-1. Soon after, Pavlidis completed a memorable hattrick, converting from the spot and leaving the visitors 3-1 down inside the first half an hour.

Raphinha equalised in the 64th minute as he intercepted a poor goal kick by Benfica to head home, but it seemed like a comeback was not to be when Ronald Araujo conceded an own goal, leaving Barcelona 2-4 down.

But the dramatic encounter had more surprises, which kickstarted with another penalty, as Lewandowski scored from the penalty spot in the 78th minute.

In the 86th minute, Eric Garcia headed home a delicate Pedri cross, drawing Barcelona level at 4-4 with four minutes of regulation time to go.

And the comeback was concluded in the 96th minute. Despite only four minutes of stoppage time added, Barcelona were allowed to play on in a counter attack from a Benfica corner. Raphinha was sent through on the right flank, but maintained incredible composure to cut inside and slot home the dramatic winner.

Barcelona, thereby, became the second team to ensure their Round of 16 place after Liverpool.

Raphinha struck a dramatic winner in stoppage time as Barcelona came from behind to beat Benfica 5-4 in a wild match on Tuesday and ensure direct qualification to the Champions League last 16. Benfica were leading 4-2 with under 15 minutes remaining but Barcelona mounted a stunning late comeback to stay three points behind leaders Liverpool. Vangelis Pavlidis hit a first-half hat-trick for the hosts, in part thanks to two big errors by Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

However a Robert Lewandowski double from the penalty spot, Eric Garcia’s header and a brace for Raphinha helped Barcelona claim a stunning last-gasp triumph in Lisbon.

“It was a crazy game… Benfica did well in the first half but we made a lot of mistakes,” said Barcelona coach Flick.

Barca showed grit to keep fighting after going in 3-1 down at half-time and swiftly conceding again after Raphinha pulled one back.

“The mentality of the team, they always believe in themselves and this was unbelievable to see,” said Flick.

“In the second half we created more chances than them and we deserved it.”

Benfica opened the scoring in the second minute, when Pavlidis escaped Pau Cubarsi and fired home from Alvaro Carreras’ low cross.

Barcelona responded swiftly with Lewandowski scoring from the penalty spot after Alejandro Balde was brought down by Benfica defender Tomas Araujo.

The hosts nosed back ahead through a stroke of luck, when Szczesny raced out of his goal to try and cut out a through-ball, but crashed into Balde.

Greece international Pavlidis gleefully collected the loose ball and rolled his second into the empty net.

Barcelona, who lured Szczesny out of retirement to replace the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen in October, soon fell further behind.

Pavlidis completed his half-hour hat-trick with a penalty after another Szczesny mistake, with the goalkeeper flying in to try and dispossess Kerem Akturkoglu but bringing him down.

Barca battle back

Lamine Yamal and Raphinha missed good chances before the break as Barcelona pushed forward.

Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin saved from Jules Kounde, who should have scored, and Lewandowski could not turn home from Pedri‘s dangerous ball across the face of goal.

Raphinha pulled one back for Barcelona in bizarre fashion as a clearance by Trubin struck his head on the edge of the area and flew back into the net.

However, Benfica soon struck again, with Ronald Araujo nudging past Szczesny into his own net as he tried to cut out a cross.

Barcelona kept pushing and Lewandowski converted another penalty after Nicolas Otamendi brought down Yamal.

The Catalan giants, who last won the Champions League in 2015, pulled level when substitute Garcia headed home from Pedri’s inviting cross.

Szczesny saved former Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria‘s low shot before Raphinha’s dramatic winner.

With Benfica appealing for a penalty, Barcelona sprang a quick breakaway and the Brazilian winger slotted home to end a blockbuster battle.

Players from both sides clashed after the final whistle as tempers flared following the thrilling denouement.

“We knew how hard it would be here, in front of their fans, and they know how to play really well, they have top level players,” Raphinha told Movistar.

“We didn’t let ourselves sink at 3-1 down, we were focussed on what we needed to do to try and change the game.

“It was a spectacular game for everyone. They could have won, or us, but we managed to take it.”

Lamine Yamal put on a spectacular show as Barcelona sailed into the Copa del Rey quarter-finals with a dazzling 5-1 victory over Real Betis on Wednesday. Atletico Madrid joined them in the last eight with a 4-0 win at second division Elche, their 15th consecutive triumph across all competitions. Barca’s 17-year-old starlet Yamal scored and helped create two more goals as Hansi Flick’s side ran riot at the Olympic Stadium. Gavi sent Barcelona ahead early on, with Jules Kounde, Raphinha, Ferran Torres and Yamal helping the Catalans rack up an impressive win.

After winning the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia last weekend by thrashing Real Madrid, Barca came into the cup clash with restored confidence, having stuttered in the final weeks of 2024.

“We have to continue like this,” said Barca defender Pau Cubarsi, also 17, who came through the club’s youth academy with Yamal.

“I’ve been enjoying watching him for many years, now the whole world is, and he deserves it all.”

Barca dominated from the off against Betis, despite the coach resting a couple of key players including striker Robert Lewandowski.

Dani Olmo, whom Barcelona controversially obtained a temporary playing license for last week, started at false nine in place of the Polish veteran.

The Spaniard helped create the opening goal at the sharp end of a neat team move, with Gavi tucking home in the second minute.

Olmo fired over and hit the post during a particularly busy opening period for the former RB Leipzig playmaker.

Kounde smashed in Barcelona’s second after the sublime Yamal dinked a ball through to him on the right of the box.

It was an area the Catalans exploited time after time, with Kounde’s second goal from a similar position disallowed for a marginal offside.

At the other end goalkeeper Inaki Pena made a fine save to deny Vitor Roque, on loan at Betis from Barcelona.

Gavi ‘big talent’

Early in the second half Yamal, who taunted Betis’ defence throughout, finished clinically after Frenkie De Jong lobbed the ball through to him on the right of the box, but it was disallowed for an offside in the build-up.

Minutes later Barcelona scored their third anyway, with Yamal’s surging run from deep in his own half ending up with his deflected effort falling to Raphinha, who struck.

Barcelona netted their fourth when, again exploiting the same part of Betis’ area, Olmo chipped a pass to substitute Ferran Torres to finish emphatically.

Yamal finally got on the scoresheet himself after breaking in from the right wing and finishing at the near post.

Roque pulled one back from the penalty spot in the final stages for Betis after Kounde stood on Jesus Rodriguez’s foot in the penalty area.

Gavi said after the game Yamal was the best player in the world after former Barca forward Lionel Messi, and Flick also praised the winger.

“Gavi’s very emotional, so I say also yes (he’s the best),” joked Flick.

“You can see it, in great matches you see big talent and he showed it many many times, he’s on a good (path).”

Yamal, who shone for Spain as they won Euro 2024 last summer, has nine goals and 13 assists across all competitions for Barcelona this season.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone rested some of his regular starters, including Antoine Griezmann, as his team ran out comfortable winners at Elche to continue their winning streak.

Alexander Sorloth struck twice for the Rojiblancos in the first half, and the visitors were further bolstered when Elche’s Nico Fernandez was sent off early in the second half.

Rodrigo Riquelme extended Atletico’s lead with a fine strike from distance and Julian Alvarez rounded off the rout.

Barcelona winger Raphinha said Tuesday potential future signings might be put off from joining the Catalan giants because of the Dani Olmo registration debacle. Financially-struggling Barca are frantically battling to get the Spanish playmaker licensed for the second half of the season after his registration ran out at the end of 2024 and earlier efforts were rebuffed twice in court. The Catalan club took their case to Spain’s top sports court on Tuesday but until there is a verdict or a temporary measure grants them new licences, are set to be without Olmo and striker Pau Victor.

Both have travelled to Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Copa del Rey winners Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday but currently cannot feature.

“I think it could (impact future signings), I can’t say no because I would be lying and that’s not me, I don’t like lying or telling stories,” said Brazil international Raphinha.

“The truth is that if I was at another club and seeing the situation that Pau and Dani are in, maybe I would think if it was the best thing to be here…

“But when I came here, before signing, I knew the club’s situation, I knew I had a chance of being able to play in this shirt and I waited until the last moment and I don’t regret it at all.”

Raphinha said it was a tough position for Olmo and Victor to be in.

“It’s hard for them, they don’t know if they can play or not,” continued the winger.

“It’s a situation that’s pretty difficult and delicate.

“We hope those in charge of it can resolve it as quickly as possible so they can play with us again.”

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick disagreed with Raphinha and said the club was still an attractive proposition.

“I have confidence in the club… I know this club and I know what happens here and also how great the club is and how great the team is, all the people around,” said Flick.

“I love everything in Barcelona so I would say come on and sign the contract, I have no doubts about that.”

‘Get closer’

The German coach, aiming to win his first trophy at Barcelona this week after arriving in the summer, said he hoped his team would pull together in the duo’s absence, with Olmo and Victor already missing Saturday’s Copa del Rey round of 32 win at Barbastro.

“We miss (Olmo), of course, because he can change every match totally, and this is what we miss, but at the end we have to accept it,” added Flick.

“I think this can also be an option for the team to get closer, as a unit.

“We have to defend and play as one unit, we have to play as a team.”

Earlier Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde said Olmo being unavailable was a boost for his team.

“Olmo is an extraordinary player and if he can’t play tomorrow, for us, well what can I say?” former Barca coach Valverde told reporters.

“I’m sorry for the situation he’s in, because he’s a player who if he can play, would bring prestige to the competition, but if he doesn’t play against us, so much the better.”

Despite winning two La Liga titles Valverde was sacked by Barcelona in January 2020 after a semi-final defeat in the Spanish Super Cup by Atletico Madrid at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, where Wednesday’s match also takes place.

“I know I played my last Barca match as coach here, in the same stadium,” added Valverde.

“It happened, I am in another place now, very happy and tomorrow is a different game.”
