A recent picture of Sri Lanka’s World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga has gone viral on social media and users cannot believe the legendary cricketer’s body transformation. Ranatunga was a star performer for Sri Lanka in the 1996 World Cup and under his captaincy, they went on to win the title for the only time in their history. Ranatunga entered politics after taking retirement from the sport and he was also a Member of Parliament in Sri Lanka. A recent picture of the cricketer along with former Indian cricket team skipper Kapil Dev has surfaced online and the internet was left completely stunned.

The schedule of India’s upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka has been revised, and the start of the contest pushed back by a day to July 27, the BCCI said on Saturday.

The Indians will be touring the island nation later this month for three T20 Internationals and as many ODIs. Originally, the first match — a T20 International — was to be played on July 26, but it will now be held on July 27, followed by the remaining two T20 games on July 28 and July 30, with all the ties to be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

The ODIs, initially scheduled to start on August 1, will now begin on August 2, followed by the remaining matches on August 4 and August 7, with all the games to be held at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

It will be India’s first white-ball bilateral trip to the Island nation since 2021. Dravid was the stand-in coach then, with Shikhar Dhawan leading a second-string side. India had won both the T20I and ODI series on that occasion.

India is yet to announce the squad for the tour, but, as reported by PTI on July 8, senior players such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are set to be rested for this trip.

India will also have a new head coach in Gautam Gambhir, while the Sri Lankans will have a new man at the helm of affairs in Sanath Jayasuriya, who has been named as the interim head coach.

India’s World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to lend financial support to former teammate Anshuman Gaekwad, who is battling blood cancer. Gaekwad, 71, has been undergoing treatment for the past year at King’s College Hospital in London. Kapil revealed that his former teammates such as Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri and Kirti Azad are doing their best to generate funds for Gaikwad’s treatment.

Kapil said he is confident that the BCCI will look into the matter and provide financial assistance to the former India head coach Gaekwad.

“It is a sad and very depressing. I am in pain because I have played alongside Anshu and can’t bear to see him in this state. No one should suffer. I know the Board will take care of him. We are not compelling anyone. Any help for Anshu will have to come from your heart. He took blows on his face and chest when standing up to some of the ferocious fast bowlers. Now is the time for us to stand up for him. I am sure our cricket fans will not fail him. They should pray for his recovery,” Kapil Dev told Sportstar.

The legendary all-rounder, however, rued the lack of a system where former players are assisted in cases like Anshuman’s. Kapil also insisted that he is ready to give up his pension if the situation doesn’t improve.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have a system. It is great to see this generation of players make good money. It is good to see the support staff members also being paid well. In our time, the Board did not have the money. Today, it has and should take care of the senior players from the past. But where do they send their contributions? If a Trust is formed, they can put their money there. But we don’t have a system. There should be a Trust. I think BCCI can do that. They do look after the players, former and present. We are ready to contribute by donating our pension amount if the family allows us to,” he added.

Gaekwad’s cricketing legacy is notable. He played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India between 1975 and 1987, and later served as India’s head coach in two separate stints.

India’s first World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev on Thursday said collective performance, not individual brilliance will be the key factor in deciding whether Rohit Sharma‘s team can end its over-a-decade-long trophy drought by winning the T20 World Cup in the West Indies. India will take on England in the tournament’s semifinal later on Thursday, hoping to make the finals where South Africa are in waiting after annihilating Afghanistan. “Why talk about only Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, or Kuldeep Yadav? Everybody has a role to play. Their job is to win the tournament,” Kapil told PTI Videos in an exclusive interview.

“To win a match, an odd person can come out, but to win a tournament everybody has to work together. If we are going to depend on Bumrah or Arshdeep, then you are going to lose it,” he asserted.

“Let’s talk about the team. That gives you a better perspective rather than the odd player. Yes main player is there and we can go around him. But everybody has to chip in to win the World Cup,” he added.

Kapil pointed out that in his 1983 World Cup-winning team, he wasn’t the only one who performed.

“Roger Binny, Mohinder Amarnath, Kirti Azad, Yashpal Sharma all came out with match-winning performances. If you start depending on one player it means you are not going to win tournaments more often,” he observed.

He wished India good luck ahead of their semi-final match against England and hoped that the Men in Blue clinch the trophy.

“All the Best, good luck, I hope the Indian players, the way they are playing keep on playing like that, they should not have a bad day and be out of the tournament (like) what happened last time in the 50 overs World Cup,” said the iconic all-rounder.

“They are playing well, they are enjoying. Hats off to them. Good luck to them. I wish them all the luck and happiness,” he added.

The 65-year-old, who was elected president of Professional Golf Tour of India on Wednesday, said that he feels proud to see India perceived as title contenders every time they compete in a global event.

“We should be happy that we are able to think that we can win. 20 years back, you weren’t thinking. It’s important that in every tournament India is going as a favourite. That’s a big thing.

“We never thought about that. That’s enough encouragement for a youngster to take up the sport. I am very happy to see where Indian cricket has reached wonderfully well,” he emphasised.

Kapil lauded Bumrah, who has been the star performer for India with 11 wickets in the tournament so far.

“Bumrah is 1000 times better than me. These young boys are far better than us. We had more experience. They are better. They are very good. Outstanding. They are fitter. They are much more hardworking. They are fantastic,” he said.

He, however, played down the role of a captain.

“Everybody can do captaincy. Hardik, Virat, Rohit everyone can do captaincy. When you give ball to somebody, the bowler has to do the job. Yes captain is there to help you out but it’s not like if you don’t win he is not a good captain.”

Rohit Sharma and Kapil Dev

Just as the Indian team is preparing for the final stages of the T20 World Cup 2024, an intriguing Rohit Sharma vs Virat Kohli battle has got fans on social media hooked, thanks to a few comments made by the legendary Kapil Dev. With only two hurdles to cross at the ongoing ICC event, India next face England in the semi-final on Thursday. Before the high-profile clash, however, Kapil Dev made some avoidable comparison statements on Kohli and Rohit, highlighting how the Hitman continues to do his work despite not being as physically fit as his mate.

Kohli is a fitness freak, and there’s no denying that. In fact, it’s his work ethic in the gym that is credited to have brought a big change in Indian players’ approach towards the game. While Rohit isn’t as big a gym freak as Virat is, his performances in this T20 World Cup have been exemplary.

Kapil, in a chat on ABP News, lauded Rohit’s ability to hit the ball around the park despite not having six packs like Kohli.

“If Virat Kohli can lift 150 kg and 250kg dumbbells, that doesn’t mean Rohit should do the same. It seems like Rohit knows his game very well. He plays within himself. He is not like Virat Kohli and doesn’t jump around. Rohit is aware of his limitations and there is no one better than him in that respect, not even Virat,” Kapil said in an ABP News show.

“Rohit has one pack and that is enough to hit big sixes,” he emphasised.

Kapil couldn’t stop hailing Rohit’s captaincy, saying he is one of the few who has led the team while also keeping others in the side happy.

“Many big players come, but they come for themselves, even do captaincy for themselves but Rohit gets one extra tick in the box because he keeps the entire team happy,” said the 1983 World Cup-winning India captain.

India cricket legend Kapil Dev has sparked another debate between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, as he hailed the current India skipper for knowing his limitations and “keeping the entire team happy”. Kapil, who was recently appointed as the President of the Professional Golf Tour of India, made the comparison ahead of India’s 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final against England, for which Rohit is India’s captain. Kapil Dev also said that Rohit does not get as excited as Virat Kohli.

“He (Rohit Sharma) is not like Virat Kohli, he does not jump around,” said Kapil (translated from Hindi). “He knows his limitations, but within those limitations, he performs the best,” said Kapil, lavishing praise on Rohit.

Kapil Dev, India’s 1983 World Cup-winning captain, also spoke of Rohit’s captaincy with great regard.

“A big tick in favour of Rohit Sharma is that he keeps the entire team happy,” said Kapil. “There are many great players who play for themselves, take the captaincy for themselves, but not him,” he added.

Towards whom exactly Kapil’s last comment was directed at is not certain, but it speaks volumes of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy to receive such praise from one of India’s most famous captains and all-rounders.

Kapil’s comment drew the ire of many fans on social media, with one user commenting that India are repeating the same mistake.

“We haven’t reached the final yet, but ‘Virat vs Rohit’ has started. We won’t win like this,” read the comment (translated from Hindi).

Rohit heads into the semi-final against England after scoring 92 off 41 balls against Australia in the Super 8 stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup, and guiding India to victory. On the other hand, Rohit’s opening partner Kohli has struggled for form. Kohli has made only 66 runs in his six innings so far.

India take on England in the semi-final, hoping to destroy the demons from the 2022 T20 World Cup, when England had defeated India by 10 wickets en route to winning the trophy.

The game will take place at Guyana’s Providence Stadium on June 27.

“A few players will suffer, but let it be,” said legendary former India captain Kapil Dev on Friday as he backed the BCCI’s decision to terminate central contracts for lack of commitment to domestic cricket, calling it a much-needed step to protect marquee first-class events like the Ranji Trophy. Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were on Wednesday excluded from the BCCI’s central contracts after ignoring the board’s diktat to play in the Ranji Trophy. The decision evoked mixed reactions with some former players like Kirti Azad and Irfan Pathan backing the out-of-favour duo.

Kapil refrained from taking names but said the BCCI’s decision to assert the importance of domestic cricket was long overdue.

“Yes, few players will suffer, kuch logon ko taqleef hogi, hone do lekin desh se badhkar koi nahi hai (some people will feel hurt but let it be because nobody is bigger than the country). Well done,” he said.

“I congratulate the BCCI for taking the much needed step to protect the status of domestic cricket. I was sad to see domestic cricket being given the skip by players once they had established themselves in international cricket,” the captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning side observed in his statement.

The BCCI, while announcing the central contracts, urged the players to give due importance to domestic competitions.

The 25-year-old Kishan did not turn up for Jharkhand throughout the team’s campaign in Ranji Trophy despite not being on national duty after leaving the tour of South Africa in December citing personal reasons. He instead focussed on preparing for the IPL next month for his franchise Mumbai Indians.

Iyer, on the other hand, did not make himself available for Mumbai’s Ranji quarterfinal against Baroda after being excluded from the Indian team after the second Test against England. He, however, has been picked for Mumbai’s Ranji semifinal against Tamil Nadu starting March 2.

“It was high time the message was given and this strong step by the BCCI will go a long way in restoring the prestige of domestic cricket,” he added.

Kapil asserted that it was the duty of established stars to play domestic cricket as they owe their success to their respective states.

“I have always believed in the process of international players making themselves available to play for their respective states. It helps them extend their support to domestic players. Also it is a nice way to pay back for the services rendered by the state association in grooming a player,” he said.

Kapil also expressed his gratitude to the BCCI for enhancing the pension of former cricketers, saying it has come as a major relief to families of several yesteryear players.

In 2022, the board had announced a hike in the monthly pensions of former cricketers — both men and women.

Former first-class men’s cricketers, who earlier got Rs 15,000 per month are now getting Rs 30,000, while former Test players, who got Rs 37,500, are now getting Rs 60,000.

Women international players, who received Rs 30,000 prior to the revision are now receiving Rs 52,500, while first-class cricketers who retired before 2003 and were getting Rs 22,500 are now getting Rs 45,000.

“I am also happy that the BCCI has increased the pension amount of the players. This was a much needed boost to those whose family depends on the pension received,” added Kapil.

In the digital world, AI is currently the buzzword. With Artificial Intelligence, the tech aficionados are producing content that took a lot of time in earlier days. However, there is a flipside to it too. Often the information provided turns out to be wrong in some cases. One such instance which has gone viral is from @Krutrim, whose X bio says it is “India’s own AI”. The beta version of the AI chatbot was launched in February, 2024. However, one of its wrong replies has gone viral social media.

Several social media users pointed out that when asked: “Who won the 1983 World Cup?” the reply from Krutrim came that it was not India, but West Indies which won the edition. At the 1983 World Cup, the Kapil Dev-led India stunned two-time champions West Indies to bring home the trophy.

However, the reply that came on Krutrim was that: “The 1983 World Cup was won by the West Indies cricket team. They defeated England in the final, held in England. The West Indies won the tournament by a large margin, showcasing their dominance in the cricket world at the time.”

Recently, former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar said that Kapil Dev has impacted India’s pace prowess a lot.

“All thanks to Kapil Dev. He has shown that in India you don’t necessarily have to be a spin bowler. Even in Indian pitches one can take wicket. Of course when you go to wickets like South Africa, England Australia, New Zealand, you will get lot more assistance as a new ball bowler. Since then India have produced a range of fast bowlers,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

“But particularly in the last 10-12 years, thanks to the IPL, there are a lot of fast bowlers who have come to the fore. Now India have a bench strength of fast bowlers which probably is going to be the envy of the cricket world. There are left-handers, right-handers, there is so much of talent available if any of these guys want to take a break. You saw when Jasprit Bumrah was not present, how Indian bowlers came in and performed. particularly Mohammed Shami. I think this will be a tribute to Kapil Dev. I also think for the first time in many, many years India will win a match on his birthday on January 6.”

Mohammed Shami has been enjoying a brilliant run of form in the ongoing Cricket World Cup 2023 and the Indian cricket team fast bowler was instrumental in his team’s 100-run victory over defending champions England in Lucknow on Sunday. Shami took four wickets to break the English resistance after India posted a modest total of 229 on a pitch that had a lot of help for pacers. Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar was all praise for Shami as he pointed out that he is extremely clear about the kind of deliveries that he wants to bowl in specific situations and even namedropped World Cup winning all-rounder Kapil Dev.

“There is a lot of hard work there. When he goes back home, he has got several pitches made apparently, and he just bowls and bowls over there. That is what is important. He is looking at his personal cricketing fitness. What is his specialty? It’s fast bowling. By bowling a number of overs in the nets where he stays. I don’t know whether he is a gym person. You can be doing gym all day. But at the end of the day… Mohammed Shami is doing exactly what Kapil Dev used to do, just bowl and bowl in the nets,” Gavaskar told India Today.

“He is not listening to all your bio-mechanic experts who might say ‘oh no, no bowl only 15-20 deliveries in the nets’. He knows that as a fast bowler, he really needs a lot more mileage in his legs as he runs in to bowl,” he added.

Shami did not feature in the first four matches of the competition for the Indian cricket team but since his inclusion, the fast bowler has set the stage on fire. He took a five-wicket haul against New Zealand and followed it up with an equally impressive show against England.

Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma added another humongous milestone to his already illustrious career with a scintillating century against Afghanistan in the Cricket World Cup 2023 on Wednesday. The veteran batter looked in tremendous touch as he dominated the Afghanistan bowlers and was able to complete his ton in just 63 deliveries. It was the fastest century by an Indian batter in Cricket World Cup history and he broke the record belonging to legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev who slammed a 72-ball century against Zimbabwe in a 1983 World game that is etched in history books.

Skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai hit half-centuries as Afghanistan reached 272-8 against hosts India in their World Cup clash on Wednesday.

Afghanistan elected to bat first at New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium which witnessed a World Cup record 754 runs scored in the previous match when South Africa posted 428 and defeated Sri Lanka.

The ground was a sea blue with nearly all of the 40,000 seats taken, many in anticipation of a big contribution by superstar cricketer and Delhi-born Virat Kohli.

But at the end of the Afghanistan innings it was pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah who stood out for the home side with his best World Cup bowling figures of 4-39. Afghanistan slipped to 63-3 before Shahidi (80) and Omarzai (62) put on 121 runs to help Afghanistan recover.

After a recent video of India’s World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev being handcuffed emerged on social media, former cricketer Gautam Gambhir had raised concerns over the well being of the latter. In the video, Dev was being forcibly led into a room by two unidentified men. Netizens, including Gambhir, questioned the nature of this video as to whether it is a genuine footage or could it be an elaborate advertising stunt? However, Gambhir took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to reveal the context behind the video.

“Anyone else received this clip, too? Hope it’s not actually @therealkapildev and that Kapil Paaji is fine!,” Gambhir had posted on X.

It has now been clarified that the video was part of a promo shoot for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India.

“Areh @therealkapildev paaji well played! Acting ka World Cup bhi aap hi jeetoge! Ab hamesha yaad rahega ki ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup is free on @DisneyPlusHS mobile,” Gambhir posted on Tuesday.

Kapil Dev started his international career in October 1978 against Pakistan.

Dev played 131 Test matches for India, scoring 5,248 runs and he also picked up 438 wickets in the longest format of the game.

In One-Day Internationals, the all-rounder represented the country in 225 games.

He picked up 253 wickets and smashed 3,783 runs. Dev scored just one century in the limited overs format — the famous knock of 175 that came against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup.

In the same tournament, Kapil Dev’s heroics saw India lift their maiden World Cup, beating the West Indies in the final.

The Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee called an end to his playing career in 1994.
