A motivational speech, and a few trademark square cuts demonstrated on the 22-yard strip. Legendary former India captain Kapil Dev had a fun interaction with children at a private school on Thursday afternoon where he advised them to avoid becoming autograph-seekers and focus on growing into autograph-givers. Kapil’s two-hour presence at Satya School in Gurgaon captivated the students and teachers alike and they made beeline to interact with the 66-year-old icon, who led India to its first ever World Cup title back in 1983.

“Sports is an essential faculty for the development of a student’s personality but not at the cost of studies. Never. And you should never seek for my autograph but make yourself good enough to sign it yourself one day,” he said in his message that drew a thunderous applause from the children.

Kapil later told newspersons that he was awestruck by the enthusiastic students.

“I feel elated and over-joyed that I could spend some quality time with the toddlers, the young kids and some budding sportspersons. I thank the school authority for giving me this opportunity.

“They are the future of India. Bright, beautiful and brilliant,” Kapil said when asked how his presence will motivate the students to become successful.

Kapil took time out to meet and shake hands with the students who performed a demonstrative parade before him at the school ground and later played cricket.

The iconic all-rounder then picked up the bat and gave demonstration of his trademark square cuts, and lofted straight drives along with some fine ground strokes.

‘I want to be a cricketer like Kapil Sir. Meeting the greatest Indian cricketer has been the biggest moment of my life so far,” Rajbir, a student of class IX, also an all rounder, told ‘PTI Videos’.

Sharing the sentiment was Niharika, a student of class XI, who said the legendary cricketer’s presence and his words of wisdom were meaningful and might just change her approach to studies and life.

“It’s an eye-opener when he said don’t seek for autograph but become an autograph giver. We will strive for that only,” she said.

It is needless to compare two generations of players and pass a judgement on who was better, legendary cricketer Kapil Dev said on Monday and refused to get into a debate if BCCI selectors were right in excluding Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant from the T20I squad for the five-match series against England. Kapil bowled nearly 300 overs during the 1991-92 Test series against Australia and in the same rubber he became the first Indian to take 400 wickets in the traditional format apart from contributing with the bat in the team’s cause.

India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah could not bowl in the second innings of the fifth Border-Gavaskar Test recently because of back spasms. India lost the five-match series 1-3. The 31-year-old Bumrah bowled more than 150 overs and emerged the highest wicket-taker on both sides with 32 scalps.

“Please don’t compare. You cannot compare one generation with another. That is not required. Today, players are scoring 300 runs in a day. It didn’t happen during our time. So don’t compare the two (generations),” said Kapil during an event hosted by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) of which he is the president.

The 1983 World Cup-winning skipper also added that one should not question the judgement of the selectors as they would have arrived at the decision to not play Jaiswal and Pant after giving it a thought.

The two cricketers played all five Tests during the gruelling Australia series, with Jaiswal (391) emerging the second-highest run-getter, second only to Travis Head (448).

Asked if it was the right decision to drop two for the home series, Kapil said, “How can I comment on the judgement of others? I think the selectors would have though about it. So, if I say something it would be criticising them. I don’t want to criticise them. They (selectors) are a group of people who must have planned and thought about that.”

With batting stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli dishing out below-par performances in Australia, and talks of whether it’s time for them to retire swirling, Kapil said the decision should be left to them.

“They are very big players. Let’s hope when they think it’s the right time to play, when they think it’s not, they will call it off,” said Kapil, in response to a question whether they should be there for the Test series in England later this year.

With Bumrah taking over the captaincy from Rohit in the fifth BGT Test at Sydney and talks on whether he should be given a long stint to prove himself going forward, Kapil said, “If he has been given the opportunity (to lead the side), then give him some time also.”

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah overtook legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev on Sunday, taking the most international wickets for India against Australia in Australia. Bumrah achieved this milestone during the fourth day of the fourth Test against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). During the second innings, Bumrah took 4/56 in 24 overs at an economy rate of 2.33. He got wickets of Sam Konstas, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh and wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey.

Now in Australia, Bumrah has taken 75 wickets in 21 matches at an average of 19.74, with best figures of 6/33. He has three five-wicket hauls in Australia.

On the other hand, in 31 international matches in Australia, Kapil took 72 wickets against Australia at an average of 25.44, with best figures of 8/106, having five five-wicket hauls in Australia.

In 11 Tests in Australia, Bumrah has taken 61 wickets at an average of 17.44, with best spell of 6/33 and three five-wicket hauls.

Coming to the match, Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. Half-centuries from Konstas (60 in 65 balls, with six fours and two sixes), Usman Khawaja (57 in 121 balls, with six fours), Marnus Labuschagne (72 in 145 balls, with seven fours) and 34th Test ton from Steve Smith (140 in 197 balls, with 13 fours and three sixes) took Australia to 474/10 in their first innings.

Bumrah (4/99) and Ravindra Jadeja (3/78) were the lead pacer and spinner for the team, while Akash Deep got two wickets and Washington Sundar got one scalp.

India lost two quick wickets and were reduced to 51/2, but a century stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal (82 in 118 balls, with 11 fours and a six) and Virat Kohli (36 in 86 balls, with four boundaries) stabilised the innings. However, Jaiswal’s run-out and Virat’s outside off-stump woes made India end day two on 164/5.

Then it was a 127-run stand between Washington Sundar (50 in 162 balls, with one four) and Nitish (114 in 189 balls, with 11 fours and a six) helped India reach 369. Scott Boland (3/57), skipper Pat Cummins (3/89) and Nathan Lyon (3/96) were the top bowlers for Aussies.

In their second innings, Australia was reduced to 91/6, but Labuschagne (70 in 139 balls, with three fours) and skipper Pat Cummins (41 in 90 balls, with four boundaries) took Australia to 228/9.

Former World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev has said veteran duo Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are “irreplaceable” in the Indian team across formats and called them “as same as Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni“. Kohli announced retirement from T20Is after delivering a match-winning knock of 76 in India’s thirlling win in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa. Later, in the press conference, Rohit too called quits to his T20I career. “No one can take Virat and Rohit’s place in the Indian team in any format. They have been a huge servant of Indian cricket and it was a happy farewell for them. The stature that Virat has made of himself in all formats, he will surely be missed in T20Is. Both are as same as Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni. They are irreplaceable,” said Kapil Dev, who is also a president of the PGTI, to IANS on the sidelines of Trinity Golf Championship League second edition curtain raiser event.

Kohli’s T20 journey began in June 2010. Over 14 years, he featured in 125 T20Is, amassing 4188 runs, which included one century and 38 half-centuries. His relentless dedication and passion for the game made him the second-highest run-getter in T20Is, just Rohit, who’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious T20I career during which he became the format’s highest scorer, amassing 4231 runs in 159 matches.

Rohit also holds the record for the most centuries in T20 internationals, with five to his name. His T20I journey began with the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, where he was a key player in India’s first title win. And, as captain, he has led India to their second title, further cementing his legacy.

Former Indian captain Kapil Dev who played alongside spinner Bishan Singh Bedi, paid his homage to the cricketer who left for a heavenly abode at the age of 77, and said he was a great human being and his illustrious career was marked by “character.” Regarded as one of the greatest left-arm spinners in world cricket, Bishan Singh Bedi passed away on Monday at the age of 77 years old in Delhi, leaving remarkable spin bowling stats behind. The legendary India spinner was known for his classical beauty of motion and ability to maintain a precise length over lengthy intervals while delicately altering his pace, trajectory, and release.

Kapil Dev, who attended Bishan Singh Bedi’s last rites at Delhi’s Lodhi crematorium, described the late spinner as a “great human being” and said he was his mentor and everything.

“We all have played cricket and we will all leave one day, but very few people come with a character, and those who have a character become successful…This is the biggest loss to Indian cricket, but more than that he was a great human being. He was my captain, my mentor, my everything,” Kapil Dev told reporters.

The celebrated left-arm spinner, who formed a much-vaunted spinning quartet along with Erapalli Prasanna, Srinivas Venkataraghavan and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar in his heydays, passed away in Delhi on Monday after a prolonged illness.

The legendary spinner represented India in 67 Tests and 10 ODIs, taking a combined of 273 wickets. Renowned for his profound understanding of the game, Bedi’s elegant and rhythmic bowling action, coupled with his ability to generate prodigious spin, and his discipline with the ball earned him tremendous success.

With an astounding 1560 first-class wickets to his credit, Mr Bedi also led India in 22 Tests, with three of the six wins coming on foreign soil. He also featured in India’s inaugural ODI, played on July 13, 1974, in Leeds. At the time of his retirement, Bedi held the distinction of being India’s highest wicket-taker in Test cricket.

Post-retirement, he briefly served as Manager and was also a national selector. His illustrious cricketing journey was aptly recognised with several accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri in 1970 and BCCI’s CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said the legendary spinner left an indelible mark on the gentlemen’s game with his artistry as a spin bowler and his impeccable character.

“Indian Cricket has lost an icon today. Bedi Sir defined an era of cricket and he left an indelible mark on the game with his artistry as a spin bowler and his impeccable character. His steadfast persona and astute insights have had a profound impact on the game as a whole. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones as they cope with this loss,” Jay Shah said in a statement.
