Pacer Jasprit Bumrah played a pivotal role in India’s triumph at the T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit Sharma and co had an outstanding run at the World Cup as the remained unbeatable throughout the tournament. In the final match, they defeated South Africa by seven runs and clinched the title. Bumrah, who scalped 15 wickets, bagged the Player of the Tournament award. With his fiery pace and on-point yorkers, Bumrah brought Team India out from the jaws of defeat on numerous occasions. It won’t be wrong to say Bumrah is currently one of the greatest fast bowlers in the world.

Not just in T20Is but Bumrah is equally effective in ODIs and Tests as well. Recently, former Pakistan skipper Ramiz Raja lavished praise on the India pacer, calling him a “legend of all three formats.

“In my book, Jasprit Bumrah is a legend in all three formats. There is no one greater who has played all three formats. So you can see, where this boy came from, he lacked confidence, had an awkward bowling action. He was unfit, but he came back, and now he has made India win the World Cup,” Ramiz Raja said on his YouTube channel.

Co-incidentally, Ramiz’s statement came after an old video of India’s new head coach Gautam Gambhir started surfacing online, where he was seen talking about having more all-format players in the pool.

“I’m a very strong believer in one thing, that if you’re good, you should be playing all the three formats. I’ve never been a big believer in injury management, that you get injured, you go get recovered. As simple as it gets. When you’re playing international cricket and you’re good enough, you ask any of the top players, they want to play all the three formats. They don’t want to stay and they don’t want to be labelled as red-ball bowler or white-ball bowler,” Gambhir said in the video.

Talking about the current team, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja have announced their retirement from the T20Is after the World Cup. In the shortest format, Team India is going through a transformation as currently a fresh-looking team is facing Zimbabwe in a five-match series.

Team India is being led by Shubman Gill and it features debutants like Riyan Parag, Abhishek Sharma, and Dhruv Jurel

Former Pakistan Cricket Board chairman and cricketer Ramiz Raja has slammed the Pakistan team after their group stage exit at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Pinpointing the many different aspects in which they were lacking, Ramiz Raja used the term “mind-boggling” to highlight the poor decision-making during the tournament. After a shock loss to co-hosts USA and then defeat to arch-nemesis India, Pakistan failed to make the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup. As a result, their qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup is also not guaranteed.

“There was no consistency in selection, their preparation was hodgepodge because they didn’t know who was going to open the innings, and they were in experimental mode for a very long time,” said Ramiz Raja, in his first criticism of the team.

Pakistan went with the experienced duo of Mohammad Rizwan and captain Babar Azam at the top at the start of the tournament, leaving out young Saim Ayub, a decision that brought in criticism from experts.

“They even had to recall retired players,” said Raja, pointing at the re-selection of pacer Mohammed Amir.

“There were also changes in the PCB, and changes as captain,” he added. Ramiz Raja was the chairman of the PCB from September 2021 to December 2022, a period in which Pakistan reached the semi-finals and final of consecutive T20 World Cups.

Recently, former India cricketer-turned-expert Sanjay Manjrekar had jokingly suggested that perhaps Ramiz Raja should replace Babar Azam as captain, as Pakistan usually “go to him to save them”.

“You’ve got to sort out the order up here,” said Raja, pointing towards his head. Critiquing the game awareness and mentality of the Pakistan players, he pointed out the decision of letting left-hander Fakhar Zaman face left-arm seamer Saurabh Netravalkar in the Super Over against USA.

Despite wins over Canada and Ireland, Pakistan failed to qualify for the Super 8 stage, following their two early defeats.

Pakistani cricketer-turned-commentator Ramiz Raja has backed the duo of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan as the openers of the national team. Reacting to Shahid Afridi’s opinion of Fakhar Zaman opening for Pakistan instead of Babar in T20Is, Raja said that the Babar-Rizwan duo might not give a strike rate of Rohit SharmaVirat Kohli but they provide “solidity” to the team. While Babar and Rizwan have provided solid starts to Pakistan, their strike rate has come under scanner, quite a lot.

“Looking at what Pakistan have got, you cannot afford to start by losing wickets. They (Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan) may not give you a strike rate of a Rohit (Sharma) or a Virat (Kohli), but, you know, at least they give you solidity. And this Pakistan team, with the kind of batting lineup that they’ve got, they’ve got to play within what they have got. So it’s important that they start off with Babar and Rizwan because it takes years to establish an opening partnership and pair,” Ramiz Raja told Cricbuzz.

With the opening combination of Babar and Rizwan, Pakistan made it to the final of T20 World Cup 2022, where they lost to England by 5 wickets.

“And there’s a reason why Pakistan made it to the final of the World Cup (in 2022). Against England about a year back, they won by 10 wickets chasing 200 (in September 2022). Why break something that is working? This phobia of strike rate must end because Pakistan do not have the luxury of such skills and talent,” Raja added.

In the ongoing T20 World Cup, Pakistan have been kncoked. The side needs Ireland to beat United States on June 14 to bow out the tournament with a win.

Pakistan crashed out of the tournament after USA’s game against Ireland was washed out. With five points in three matches, USA joined India in the Super 8 stage from Group A.

The Pakistan cricket team’s second successive capitulation in an ICC World Cup has been receiving quite the flak. After an early exit from the ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan were eliminated from the group stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup. What was even more disheartening for a Pakistan fan was that the team went out after losses against USA and India. Against the latter, Pakistan came close but could not make full use of a commanding situation.

Ramiz Raja, former Pakistan cricket team captain and ex-Pakistan Cricket Board chief, lost his cool while decoding the side’s poor show.

Aapne choon-choon ka murabba bana diya hai iss team ko (you have turned this team into a mixture of varied things),” Raja said on hi YouTube channel.

“You brought back old, retired players so that somehow you save your face in the T20 World Cup…(you) let some of the good talent slip away just because this is a World Cup and it requires experience, we have to bring back retired players, even if they have bitched about the captain.”

Raja went on to say that this was an age-old blunder by the Pakistan team.

Aise thodi team chalti hai. Yeh pehle bhi humne kar ke dekh liya tha (the team doesn’t work that way; we have tried this before),” Ramiz said. “I think it was the 2003 World Cup. We gathered all the super stars in that team thinking that experience will come handy. But those were ageing stars, and Pakistan couldn’t be saved. We got beaten badly there as well.”

“You have to see who to play, what is the captain’s role. Unless you allow the leadership to flourish in this environment, let them take decision, introduce discipline and merit, and not try to run it (the team) from the sidelines, unless you have the cricket IQ and thinking and take good decisions morally and cricket-wise, until that time it’s almost impossible for this team to get back up on its legs,” Ramiz said.

“You will now find sacrificial lambs to save your place. That’s not how you run cricket.”

Pakistan captain Babar Azam stood by to click pictures with a hoard of fans in Cardiff, despite initially being unimpressed at the sudden crowd that had surrounded him. In a video that went viral over social media, Babar – dressed in a casual cream-coloured outfit – has been captured addressing some of the fans to not surround and film him on the street. However, Babar eventually offered to click selfies with the fans. Security officials were also present near Babar to control the situation.

Babar Azam is presently leading the Pakistan team on a four-match T20I tour to England. Pakistan are in Cardiff for the third T20I on May 28. After the first game was abandoned due to rain, the men in green lost the second match by 23 runs.

The fan-following for Babar comes as no surprise after he was reinstated as Pakistan’s white-ball captain ahead of the T20 World Cup. Babar took back captaincy responsibilities from Shaheen Shah Afridi, under whom Pakistan lost four of their five games. It is important to remember that Pakistan are being coached by former India head coach Gary Kirsten, who won the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup with the men in blue.

The series against England is part of both nations’ preparations ahead of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which gets underway on June 2. Pakistan’s first match is against hosts United States on June 6.

Babar will be hoping to improve on his 26-ball 32 from the second game. He was trapped LBW by Moeen Ali. Fakhar Zaman top-scored with a 21-ball blitz of 45 runs. Shaheen Afridi led the wickets’ column, picking up three. However, the left-arm seamer did come under criticism from former Pakistan selector Ramiz Raja.

“He (Shaheen) needs to develop the length ball and change of pace, especially when he is not getting much from the pitch. If he bowls at full length when the ball isn’t swinging, he will go for runs” Ramiz Raja said on his YouTube channel.

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja voiced concerns over Shaheen Shah Afridi’s bowling especially when the ball doesn’t swing. With the sun shining down at Edgbaston, Pakistan succumbed to a 23-run defeat in the second T20I against England. While Pakistan’s batting set-up lacked firepower during the chase, their bowlers also produced underwhelming spells in the first innings. Star pacer Shaheen Afridi stood out with three wickets in his four-over spell but struggled to make his mark in the early phase of the game.

While pinpointing Shaheen’s struggle, Ramiz believes that the pacer needs to develop more variations to become more effective in the format.

“Shaheen Shah Afridi’s bowling. Look, if the ball isn’t swinging and he bowls at full length, then he gets bashed. He needs to develop length ball and change of pace especially when he is not getting much from the pitch. Even today, he didn’t bowl perfectly with the new ball and [England] escaped pressure,” Ramiz said on his YouTube channel.

With the pitch hardly offering any swing in the opening phase of the game, Shaheen struggled to cause trouble to England’s opening pair in the powerplay.

He picked up most of his wickets in the middle and death overs when England were trying to accelerate their innings to reach a competitive total.

In his four-over spell, Shaheen removed Jonny Bairstow (21), Moeen Ali (4) and Chris Jordan (3). He ended up giving away 36 runs out of which he conceded 21 runs in his two overs of the powerplay.

Jos Buttler’s 84-run blitz off 51 deliveries helped England post 183/7 on the board. In reply, it was a collective effort from Pakistan batters to help their team get across the line. However, none of them stayed on the pitch long enough to see off the game for the visitors.

Most of them lost their wicket while attempting to clear the boundary rope during the chase of 184. England bowlers played their cards at the right time to clinch a 23-run win.

After Pakistan suffered a 23-run defeat against England, former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja stated that the Men in Green need to bring back the previous opening pair of Mohammad Rizwan and captain Babar Azam. Raja also stated that the “undercooked” Saim Ayub, who opened with Rizwan in the second T20I against England, should be benched because due to him the “entire combination has been disturbed.” Engalnd captain Jos Buttler’s half-century and Reece Topley and Jofra Archer’s fine spells powered the home side to a 23-run win over Pakistan in the second T20I at Birmingham on Saturday.

With this win, England take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. The first game was washed out due to rain.

The former PCB chief said Pakistan needed to compete better to win the match but they made many mistakes which caused them the game.

“Win or lose is part of the game but Pakistan could’ve competed better and may have even won at the end but they made mistakes. First, let’s identify the problem areas for Pakistan,” Raja said on YouTube.

Raja said Pakistan should bench Ayub as he is “undercooked” and the batter has been given too many chances to do better in international cricket, however, he still underperforms. In the match, Ayub only managed to score two runs in 7 balls and fell prey to England’s star pacer Reece Topley.

This is not the first time the youngster struggled in international cricket. He struggled to put up runs against New Zealand in the T20I series last month but Ayub showed signs of improvement with a quick-paced knock of 45(29) in the first T20I. In four matches against the Blackcaps, the 21-year-old scored 52 runs at an average of 14.25 with 32 as his highest score in the series.

Before Ayub, Babar and Rizwan were the designated openers for the Men in Green and they were one of the most prolific openers in the white ball set-up as well. The seasoned duo recorded a record-breaking stand of 105-run stand which was their third-century partnership in the last edition of the Men’s T20I World Cup in 2022.

“First, Saim Ayub coming as an opener. I don’t think Pakistan should continue with Saim. He has been given too many chances and you have to do better in [international] cricket. He is undercooked. You need to revert to the opening pair of Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam because that is Pakistan’s strength and they understand each other’s game. The entire combination has been disturbed due to Saim,” he added.

Meanwhile, the action of the four-match T20I series will shift at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff where the hosts England will take on Pakistan in the third game on Tuesday.

Former Pakistan cricket team star Ramiz Raja was extremely displeased with the coverage of the ongoing T20I series between Pakistan and Ireland. Ireland won the first T20I but Pakistan bounced back to win the second match in the series that is the start of their beginning for T20 World Cup 2024. Pakistan will next take on England in a four T20I series. Raja said that the lack of DRS and replays is not befitting of a match featuring Pakistan and added that he was not able to follow the action properly.

“One thing which I don’t like at all is the coverage of this match. It feels like a club game is being telecast. Only two cameras are there. There’s no DRS, no replays, you don’t get an idea of the boundary rope, you can’t enjoy a good shot being played or good balls being bowled. This is extremely unfair to the Pakistan cricket product. A lot of people love Pakistan cricket. It has an aura around the world. And to present it like this is unfair to Pakistan cricket,” he said on YouTube.

He also said that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should have looked into the matter.

“Someone should have figured it out earlier. If the coverage was going to be like this, whichever broadcasting company it was, should have taken the rights from Cricket Ireland. I know they have the rights, but it should have been taken away and the coverage should have been made much better for this series because this marks the beginning of our road to the World Cup.”

“I can tell you this with certainty if India knew this situation, they would never have allowed such coverage. Because your honour is in your hands. So Pakistan’s honour should also be in their hands. Through coverage like this, our cricket looks flat. And it is unfair,” he added.

Saim Ayub in action© Twitter

Former Pakistan cricketer Ramiz Raja feels if opener Saim Ayub can’t perform consistently then there was no point in breaking the established opening duo of Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam. After he struggled to put up runs against New Zealand in the T20I series last month, Saim Ayub showed signs of improvement with a quick-paced knock of 45(29) in the first T20I. However, the young opening batter couldn’t keep up with the consistency in the second T20I and fell for a score of 6 during Pakistan’s chase of 194 on Sunday in Dublin.

“I don’t think Saim Ayub gives you security, he shows flashes of brilliance. If you don’t score 50 off 30 balls then breaking Rizwan and Babar’s opening duo doesn’t make any sense,” Ramiz said on his YouTube channel on Monday.

In four matches against the Kiwis, Ayub scored 52 runs at an average of 14.25 with 32 as his highest score in the series. Before Ayub, Babar and Rizwan were the designated openers for the Men in Green and they were one of the most prolific openers in the white ball set-up as well.

Before Hafeez’s reign brought an end to Babar and Rizwan’s time as openers, the stalwart Pakistan batters were one of the most prolific opening pair that the T20I format ever witnessed.

The record-breaking duo of Babar and Rizwan forged a 105-run stand which was their third-century partnership in the last edition of the Men’s T20I World Cup in 2022. They set a new record, for registering the most hundred stands as an opening duo in the history of the tournament.

After Ireland emerged triumphant in the series opener, Pakistan’s victory brought the series to level terms (1-1), the third match will decide the winner of the series which will be played on Tuesday at the Clontarf Cricket Club, Dublin.

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja slammed Men in Green bowlers on Monday for their performance in the second T20I against Ireland despite their comprehensive win. Pakistan’s frontline speedsters, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Naseem Shah and Abbas Afridi combined to give away 162 runs as Ireland posted a total of 193/7 in the first innings. Shaheen and Amir proved to be too costly out of the four as they gave away runs at a minimum economy of 11.00. Shaheen walked away with three scalps but spilt 49 runs in his four-over spell. While Amir had a sole wicket to his name in his four-over spell in that process he conceded 44 runs.

Still Pakistan batters were able to cover up and chase down the 194-run target comfortably with more than three overs to spare.

Ramiz slammed the performance of Pakistan pacers against Ireland for leaking runs throughout the innings at a hefty economy. The 61-year-old feels if Ireland had managed to take Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman’s catch then the visitors would have been reeling for victory.

“They conceded 200 runs against Ireland and it seemed as if our bowlers were behind, If they had taken the catches of Rizwan and Zaman it would have become difficult for Pakistan to chase the target. Pakistan’s top bowlers giving away so many runs against Ireland, then it will become hard for the team in future. Pakistan’s forte, and success are based on the bowlers, especially pacers, they have been struggling since last year’s World Cup in India. Two balls are good and then three deliveries are bad, this makes the situation tough,” Ramiz said on his YouTube channel.

Pakistan’s decision to bowl after winning the toss backfired as Lorcan Tucker (51) led the charge with the bat and Harry Tector (32) and Curtis Campher (22) provided the ideal support to him. Gareth Delany provided the finishing touches in the end with his 28* run cameo off 10 deliveries to power Ireland to 193/7.

In reply, Mohammad Rizwan (75*) and Fakhar Zaman (78) laid the foundation for a successful chase for Pakistan. Azam Khan struck three consecutive sixes to seal a comprehensive 7-wicket victory for the visitors.

Pakistan’s victory brought the series to level terms (1-1), the third match will decide the winner of the series which will be played on Tuesday at the Clontarf Cricket Club, Dublin.
