A day after senior Congress leader and eight-time MLA Ramalinga Reddy resigned from the Karnataka Cabinet over dissatisfaction with the portfolio allocated to him, the Congress leadership on Saturday (June 6, 2026) rejected his resignation and persuaded him to continue as a Minister.

The development came after a series of meetings involving Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Congress general secretary in charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala, and KPCC president B.K. Hariprasad.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Reddy said the party leadership had assured him that the concerns raised by him would be addressed at an appropriate time and made it clear that they wanted him to remain in the Cabinet.

“After the meetings, all the leaders gave me hope. The Chief Minister called me three times and met me yesterday. Mr. Surjewala met and spoke to me. They all said they wanted me to continue as a part of the Cabinet and that there was no question of accepting my resignation,” Mr. Reddy said.

He said the Chief Minister and senior Congress leaders requested him to remain in the government and assured him that the issues he had raised would be looked into in due course.

“They have rejected my resignation and I will respect the party’s decision. They asked me to continue in the Cabinet and I will do so,” Mr. Reddy said.

Late on Friday night (June 5, 2026), Mr. Shivakumar held a nearly two-and-a-half-hour meeting with Mr. Reddy at a private hotel in Jayanagar as part of efforts to resolve the issue. The discussions continued till the early hours of Saturday (June 6).

Further rounds of talks were held later in the day with Mr. Surjewala and Mr. Hariprasad, following which the Congress leadership decided to reject Mr. Reddy’s resignation, ending uncertainty over his future in the Cabinet.

The famed Nagaradhana Centre at Kukke Sri Subrahmanya Temple in Dakshina Kannada district, that witnesses more than one crore footfalls annually, will soon add at least one thousand more rooms for visiting devotees.

For this purpose, the temple administration is set to construct three choultry blocks, each at a cost of ₹60 crore, and two dormitory blocks, to cost ₹50 crore each, at Injadi, closer to the temple.

There was a dire need to augment accommodation for devotees as at present, only about 200 rooms operated by the temple administration were available to them, said Karnataka Minister for Transport and Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department Ramalinga Reddy.

Mr. Reddy told The Hindu that adding more accommodation was part of the Master Plan Phase III for the development of facilities at Subrahmanya at an estimated cost of ₹604.65 crore, cleared recently by the State Cabinet. The temple has enough funds in deposits to undertake the works, he said.

Master Plan Phase III for Kukke Subrahmanya’s development

Name of the work Cost (in ₹)
Renovation of the Sutthu Pouli (around the temple) ₹32 crores
Sarpa Samskara Yaga Shale (3 blocks at ₹5cr, ₹5.5 cr and ₹5.9 cr) ₹16.4 crores
Ashlesha bali Mantapa at Tulasi Thota ₹9.5 crores

Seva complexes

Thousands of devotees throng Kukke Subrahmanya from across the country to perform three important rituals — Sarpa Samskara, Naga Pratishthe and Ashlesha Bali. Initially, all the three sevas were being performed inside the temple complex only.

A few years back, a separate Yaga Shala was constructed for Sarpa Samskara Seva that needed more space while Naga Pratishthe and Ashlesha Bali continued to be performed inside the temple. Under the new Master Plan, the cabinet has approved construction of three more Yaga Shala complexes for Sarpa Samskara (₹16.4 crore) and one Ashlesha Bali Mantapa (₹9.5 crore) near the temple, Mr. Reddy said.

Temple surroundings

The plan also envisages renovation of the Suthu Pouli (outer peripheral wall) of the temple at an estimated cost of ₹32 crore. A new, ground plus two floor Anna Dasoha (dining hall) complex, that could feed at least 6,000 devotees at a time would be constructed at ₹77.25 crore cost, said Temple Executive Officer Aravinda Ayyappa Suthagundi.

The Ratha Beedi (Car Street) of the temple would be done afresh in a traditional style with unpolished granite flooring at a cost of ₹47.5 crore. A commercial complex-cum-choultry would be constructed on the left-hand side of the temple at a cost of ₹82 crore.

Mr. Reddy said the temple administration would also take care of its employees by way of providing residential quarters — three blocks each for Group C and D employees at a cost of ₹32.25 crore and ₹27.75 crore each.

In two years

The department has decided to get all these works executed by the Public Works Department itself. “Tenders will soon be floated and all the works will get completed within two years, during this government’s tenure itself,” Mr. Reddy said.

Ramalinga Reddy said the provision was not new but has existed since 2003

Bengaluru:

Karnataka Minister Ramalinga Reddy on Thursday defended the state government’s move to collect funds from temples having gross income of Rs 10 lakh.

The Transport and Hindu Religious Endowments Minister’s reaction came after the BJP mounted an attack on the government for introducing the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments (Amendment) Bill.

The BJP alleged that the Congress government wanted to fill its ’empty coffers’ with temple money.

Regarding the bill that was passed by the Karnataka Assembly on Wednesday, the state government said it was necessary to enhance the amount of common pool fund, include a person skilled in Vishwa Hindu Temple architecture and sculpture in the committee of management of notified institutions and to form district and state-level committees to improve temples and infrastructure for the safety of pilgrims.

Mr Reddy told reporters that the provision was not new but has existed since 2003.

There are 3,000 C-Grade temples in Karnataka, which have less than Rs five lakh income from where ‘Dharmika Parishad’ gets no money.

Dharmika Parishad is a committee to improve the temple management for the benefit of pilgrims.

There are B-grade temples with income between Rs five lakh and Rs 25 lakh from where five per cent of the gross income has been going to the Dharmika Parishad since 2003.

The Dharmika Parishad has been getting 10 per cent of revenue from those temples whose gross income was above Rs 25 lakh since 2003.

“Now what we have done is we have made it free from paying to Dharmika Parishad if the income is up to Rs 10 lakh. We have made provisions to collect five per cent from temples whose gross income is between Rs 10 lakh and less than one crore. Ten per cent of the income will be collected from temples whose income is above Rs one crore. All this amount will reach the Dharmika Parishad,” Reddy said.

The Minister said there are 40,000 to 50,000 priests in the state whom the state government wants to help.

“If the money reaches Dharmika Parishad then we can provide them insurance cover. We want their families to get at least Rs five lakh if something happens to them. To pay the premium we need Rs seven crore to Rs eight crore,” he explained.

The Minister said the government wants to provide scholarships to children of temple priests, which would require Rs five crore to Rs six crore annually.

This entire amount will benefit the temple priests only, many of whom are in poor condition.

In a post on ‘X,’ BJP state president B Y Vijayendra hit out at the government over the move and said, “Corrupt, inept #LootSarkaar with its penchant for anti-Hindu ideology in the guise of secularism, has cast its evil eyes on the temple revenues. Through the Hindu Religious Endowments Amendment Act, it is trying to siphon off donations as well as offerings from Hindu temples and religious institutions in order to fill its empty coffers.” The Shivamogga MLA said the government plans to gobble up 10 per cent of the temple revenue exceeding Rs one crore and five per cent of temple revenue below Rs five crore.

“This not only reflects the deplorable condition of this govt but also shows its abject hate towards Hindu Dharma,” he charged.

Temple funds should be dedicatedly utilised for the renovation of temples and to facilitate work beneficial to devotees, rather than diverting it for other purposes, which would be an injustice and betrayal of people’s religious beliefs, the BJP state chief said.

Vijayendra asked the government why only Hindu temples are targeted for revenue, leaving out other religions, which is a question raised by millions of devotees.

“Instead of grabbing the devotees’ money, the government can install “Donation Boxes” so that the concerned citizens can help this penniless govt boost its revenue as a Gesture of Goodwill,” he stated.

Government sources said the purpose behind the bill is to provide facilities and safety to pilgrims within the jurisdiction of Group ‘A’ temples.

A district-level and state high-level committee will be constituted to scrutinise, review and submit the proposals regarding the construction and maintenance of buildings, roads and tunnels, electricity supply and maintenance, water supply and sanitation, construction of recreation centres and libraries to provide necessary facilities to pilgrims and to provide safety to pilgrims within the jurisdiction of Group “A” Temples, they added.
