The Supreme Court is set to hear on July 20 a batch of pleas seeking a fair and time-bound probe into the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

As per the apex court’s cause list for July 20, four separate pleas related to the issue would come up for hearing before a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana.

On July 13, the top court agreed to hear these pleas and directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the Uttar Pradesh government to probe the matter, to submit a status report before it.

The Bench had also issued notice to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust seeking its response in the matter.

“Since it is averred in some of the writ petitions that some FIRs have already been registered and an SIT has been constituted to investigate the matter, we direct the SIT constituted by the State of Uttar Pradesh to submit a status report before this court,” the top court had said.

Narendra Kumar Goswami, one of the petitioners in the case, moved the top court seeking a CBI probe in the case.

He has also sought a Comptroller and Auditor General audit of the finances of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Theerth Kshetra Trust, which manages the affairs of the Ram temple.

Ajay Kumar Rai and Dinesh Kumar Yadav, who have filed one of the pleas in the top court, have said that a CBI-led multi-disciplinary SIT should investigate the alleged financial irregularities and other purported illegalities concerning the affairs and administration of the temple trust.

Besides seeking a Supreme Court-monitored CBI probe, the third petition filed by RJD MP Sudhakar Singh has sought a forensic audit of the entire finances of the Trust.

Another petition filed by ‘Hindu Dharma Parishad’ has sought an apex court-monitored investigation into the allegations.

On June 13, the Uttar Pradesh government constituted the SIT on a request from the temple trust following allegations of misappropriation of donations received at the Ram temple.

The SIT comprises Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, Inspector General of Police Kiran S. and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan.

Amid the Ayodhya Ram Temple funds embezzlement case, social activist and former Indian Police Service officer Amitabh Thakur on Friday (July 3, 2026) stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. He asked the Trust to place its trust documents, annual reports and financial statements in the public domain so that public faith was restored.

Mr. Thakur told The Hindu that the recent developments concerning the Trust had reinforced the very issues of transparency and accountability that he had consistently raised much earlier.

On February 26, 2024, he had requested the Trust to voluntarily place its trust documents, annual reports and financial statements in the public domain. When no meaningful action followed, he sent another representation on June 7, 2025.

“The Trust says its accounts have never been audited by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India and reiterated that it is an independent and autonomous body. I would again request the Trust to place its trust documents, annual reports and financial statements in the public domain,” said the former 1992-batch IPS officer. Mr. Thakur also heads Azad Adhikar Sena, a political outfit.

Eight persons accused in the case have been arrested and sent to judicial custody till July 13.

Ayodhya:

The caretaker of a mosque near the under-construction Ram temple in Ayodhya has entered into an agreement with the temple trust to “sell” the mosque land for Rs 30 lakh, according to a complaint lodged with the district authorities by local Muslims.

Though the sale agreement was inked on September 1, the matter came to light recently. Local Muslim groups have now sought action against the caretaker of the mosque and called for cancellation of the agreement.

On Thursday afternoon, a delegation of Muslims met the Ayodhya district magistrate and handed over a memorandum demanding the lodging of an FIR against the mosque caretaker and cancellation of the agreement of sale done between him and the Shri Ram Janambhoomi Teerth Kshetra trust.

District Magistrate Nitish Kumar said, “The application regarding the sale of ‘Masjid Badr’ has been received by my office and Additional District Magistrate (Enforcement) Amit Singh has been asked to probe the matter.” The delegation was headed by Azam Qadri, the president of Anjuman Muhafiz Masajid Wa Makabir, a local committee formed to save the waqf property in Ayodhya.

Azam Qadri said the caretaker of Masjid Badr, Mohammad Raees, has entered into the sale agreement for a total of Rs 30 lakh and has taken Rs 15 lakh in advance.

The mosque is situated in Mohalla Panji Tola of Ayodhya and is used for daily prayers by locals, he said.

The mosque is duly registered with the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board, he said.

Station House Officer of Ram Janambhoomi police station M P Shukla said they were investigating the matter.

Aftab Ahmad, senior counsel for the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board, said, “According to the central waqf act and different rulings given by the Supreme Court at different times, no one has the right to either sale, transfer or gift waqf properties. Those involved in selling or entering into agreement of sale of ‘Masjid Badr’ of Ayodhya have committed a crime and their acts are against the law.” Representatives of the temple trust could not be reached for a comment on the issue.
